Ubuntu Servers :: How To Copy File From Server
Jun 10, 2010
Being fairly new to navigating around Linux in a server environment, I simply want to copy a file from the server to a file in my home directory on my laptop. I connected successfully using vpnc and then used ssh to connect to the server. Now, all I want to do is copy a file that I see on the server's home directory to my home directory on my laptop. However, I don't want to use these commands unless I am comfortable with them because the file that I am copying is a big file and I don't want to lose it.

I have two PCs with Ubuntu 10.4 and DOS 5.0, which are connected by a 9 pins serial cable. I need to copy some files from the Linux box to the DOS box.
I tried UUCP but it's too difficult and i didn't found a working client for DOS.

Can only think of using ftp client as i can drive the ftp client from bash scripts and java code.

I have a System with 3 raids and 11 hard drives
#1 Raid5: 6 * 1TB WD Green Power
#2 Raid1: 2 * 500GB WD Greem Power
#3 Raid1: 2 * 2TB Hitachi 24/7
[Code]....
i can't do the write test because it says: "the disk seems to ahve usage 'filesystem' ..." So I try copy via file browser.. From #1 to #3 i have an average write rate of 17 MB/s (one big file) When I do the same over GBit network, i get about 21 MB/s
I've got an X2 4200+ which is about 50% in use (both cores) in the worst case.

Today I was moving 25,000 files from my projects folder from a windows box to the linux box when I noticed it crapped out about 60% of the way done check the server console saw a crash report all over the screen so I hot the power button and rebooted server is back up no file loss so no problem but I thought I would report a problem with SAMBA and copying vast numbers of files is at issue after the restarting the server, samba still did not come up so I restated it and it is back up fine.

I've just installed Ubuntu server 10.04 and have set up vsftpd somewhat successfully. I can connect as my root user, and I only have access to my home directory. However, whenever I try to copy a file across a file I receive a 550 Permission denied error.
I've run the command ls -l /home/directory and the result returned is total 0, when I was expecting details of permissions per user. I've tried running chmod -w /home/directory but this doesn't return any result nor change the result of the above ls command.

I export a folder via NFS service.I able to mount this NFS share in another Linux machine. The folder has many files. The ownership of these files aren't belong to single user. There are more than 10 different users' files in the folder.I am trying to migrate all these files to another folder. When I use "cp -a", the new files' ownership are all reset to the logon user.
Both NFS server and client machine has exactly same copy of users/groups as these 2 machines refer to same LDAP directory service. When use "ls -al" to list the NFS share in client, I can see the files ownership is exactly the same as the NFS server. Is that possible to preserve the ownership of files while doing such migration? The "cp -a" fail to deliver the job.

I am trying to copy a directory and everything in it from one server to another. No matter what I type into SCP, it just gives me back:
usage: scp [-1246BCpqrv] [-c cipher] [-F ssh_config] [-i identity_file]
[-l limit] [-o ssh_option] [-P port] [-S program]
I tried:scp -r -P 1133 root@XX.XX.XX.XX:/home/imagesShouldn't that recursively copy /home/images from the server XX.XX.XX.XX through SSH on port 1133?Btw - I know you can do it with a tar or just a regular FTP program. The folderI am trying to copy is 40 gig, there isn't enough free space to make a tar (if the server would even do it)

I update my system to 11.3 and cannot copy file(s) to Windows Server 2003 by Dolphi (smb://user@server/shared). After error inform for dialog box, I click on Cancel Button and see the file, or better, part of file (32.0 KiB) try copy. I can create folder, create file empty, but not copy file or files. The problem isn't permission, because I inform my credentials correctly.

I'm running cygwin 1.7.7 on a win2k3R2 Standard edition server. I have a RHEL 4.7 linux host I'm scp'ing files from to the windows system using a simple cygwin scp command from what appears to be OpenSSH_5.5p1 on the cygwin host. When I run the simple scp command on the cygwin host, the counters initially display and increment/decrement, albeit what is at a much slower rate than is actually taking place. After the percent complete reaches a little less than 10%, all the counters from the cygwin console window cease to increment/decrement.
However, when I cd to the directory on the cygwin host where the file is being scp'ed to, the file is continuing to be transferred and a much higher rate than the counters seem to show. Finally, when the file transfer is complete by directly seeing the byte count as equal between the hosts, the scp counters will suddenly jump to 100% complete. This is not the case with my linux to linux scp's. The counters increment/decrement as expected and transfers are about what I'd expect over the same network infrastructure. This appears to be a cygwin ssh/scp implementation issue. I've posited this question to cygwin with no response as yet. The only reference I've been able to find on the 'net refers to buffering causing file transfers to appear to complete later than the transfer really does..........

There is a centralized FTP server which are accessed by clients to develop some web development project and to achieve this the clients are using ftp service. The problem is when they are trying to copy any files and directories they are getting the following error: "Message reported from the file system: FTP copy not supported, use move instead"
I've checked all the permissions and they are all OK. I don't know why this is happening. they can create and move files and folders but can't copy files and folders.

How to copy a Read-Only file in Linux and make the copy writable with a single cp command in Linux (Ubuntu 10.04)? The --no-preserve and --preserve seemed to be good candidates, except that they should "and" the mode flags, while what I am looking for is something that will "or" them (add +w mode).
More details: I have to import a repository from GIT to Perforce. I want that all Perforce depot files are Read-Only (that is how Perforce was designed), while all other files that were derived/copied from depot files are writable. Currently if a Makefile tries to copy a Read-Only file then the derived file will also be Read-only. This leads to build-errors when cp tries to overwrite Read-Only file second time. Of course the --force is a workaround here but then the derived file is also Read-Only. Also I do not want to mess with "chmod" after each "cp" command - I will do that only as the last resort.

I have some issue with my amanda backup server, which is connecting with Scalar Quantum i500 via FC. I got the error as below 3 days ago.
These dumps were to tape 000289.
*** A TAPE ERROR OCCURRED: [No more writable valid tape found].
Normally I will load the proper tapes and run the amflush to push stuff from the holding disk to tapes manually. However this time amflush in this case did not help, Amanda immediately responded with an out of tape error again.
Meanwhile I got some errors from dmesg as well
st3: Error 18 (sugg. bt 0x0, driver bt 0x0, host bt 0x0).
scsi1 (0,3,0) : reservation conflict

I support a small business which runs a headless Ubuntu Server (10.04 32bit) as a file server which is accessed by Windows machines.Although the company has it's own back-up procedure they have decided to back-up some (none sensitive) files online. The have chosen FileFactory (http://www.filefactory.com/) as the host for this. FileFactory allows files to be uploaded to their server by FTP however I do not know how to set this up on the server.
The idea, if it is possible, is to connect to FileFactory through FTP and then synchronise the data using an Rsync command.I normally access the server through Webmin and it has vsFTP installed. I can access the company's server by FTP from inside and outside of the network so I know that vsFTP is working for incomming connections however I cannot work out how to configure it to connect to the FileFactory server.

I have set up a Ubuntu server to handle Dan's Guardian for protection of the children. I need next to set up a centralized file server and some kind of authentication method.
We are dual booting the computers just now since we need to use "Rosetta Stone" language software and they will not release a certain plugin for Linux according to our assigned help person. We also use pure Windows XP in some classrooms for now, and will do so until the school's children gets used to Ubuntu.
So, what is the best authentication method for a mixed environment? Where might I find a Ubuntu "howto" on the method?
What is the best way to set up a file server? Howto? Can the box running Dan's Guardian also be the authentication box and file server? (it is our newest box, only 2 years old and has a large hard drive)

Trying to setup a file server for a small group of users and I am in need of help with file permissions with Ubuntu Server 10.10.
I have a single share mapping (ex /media/hdd1/share1). There are several folders that everyone will need read/write/edit permissions and there will be a few folders that all users will need read permissions and a couple of users will need read/write/edit permissions.
I have tried several things and as long as I create the folders/files through ssh using sudo, the permissions are fine, but when the users create file and folders through their computers (mixture of Windows and Mac) that user becomes the owner and no one else can write or edit those files.
I am using SAMBA and though it was a config issue with that but I logged each user directly into the server with the same issue.
I tried sudo chmod 777 /media/hdd1/share1 but all newly created files have the above issue.

started setting up my 3rd ubuntu server under the OS of Ubuntu Linux 9.04 64 bit. I have configured the server to allow root access and am using this to execute this file. As you can see from the screenshot of PuTTy, the file exists but is refusing to load up. I am also able to nano the file. I have tried moving the file to /root/ and still had no luck.

I'm working on a remote Ubuntu 9.10 server, which is accessed via VPN. I installed Joomla, but had difficulty uploading new components, which I traced to a file permissions problem. I used FileZilla to FTP onto the site and tried to make the chmod changes I needed, but the commands kept failing. Eventually, I contacted the sys admin and told him I thought that there was an ownership problem with the directories. He checked and told me that I was logging in with exactly the same user name and password that he was using (it's not a live system currently) and that he could make chmod changes without any problems. Because all my attempts were still failing, he eventually did the following:
chown -R administrator:administrator /var/www
/var/www is where all the Joomla files are stored and Administrator is the user name. Now I find that when I run a chmod command in FileZilla, the server reports that it worked (see below):
Status:Connected
Status:Retrieving directory listing...
Command:CWD /etc
[code].....
However, if I go back and check the tmp folder permissions, I find that they are still set to 777.This still looks like an ownership problem to me, but I don't understand why the server seems to think that the chmod changes are working, when they aren't.

I am going to set up a file server on Ubuntu. I have searched a while, but can't seem to find a guide to what I want. The requirements specifications are the following:File server: possible to upload, change and download files.Linux (Ubuntu) clients, Windows clients if possible.Access restriction to deny access to other than registered users.Only the user should be able to read the content of the files.Ideally root should not be able to see the individual files, but in worst case it is ok for root to see the files.Root should not be able to open the files.Point 1-3 is easy to find out how to set up. But I can't seem to find a way to deny root to view the files. The only solution I can think of is to encrypt files or a whole folder, but I don't know how to set it up.
The setup is for a home network, but the server used as a file server will have a web server as well. If someone manages to get access to the server I don't want them to be able to read the files.

I'm looking to create a file server of over 24TB+ and was wondering if anyone knew of any barriers to doing this in Ubuntu.
I am considering limiting each server to 8TB, and creating 4 of them. I think once I take into consideration the hardware limitations, and backup (I will need a RAID configuration (still deciding)) then perhaps 24TB in one box is possibly a little unlikely!

I've played with ubuntu for quite a while now and i picked up a atom core mini pc for cheap so i thought i'd make a hobby in setting up a simple server to store files on, access files on my xbmc enabled xbox and download torrents whilst i'm at work though the torrents can wait for future projects though i installed ubuntu server 9.10, i'm aware it's CL only, anyway thus far i've managed to set up the ipaddress of it and make it fixed i'm not sure of what to do with hosts at the moment, reading on it isn't making much sense of it's purpose or layout so i've left it as is i permenently mounted a fat32 partition to /media/stuff and changed permissions to 0777 only have one user on it, myself installed samba smbfs smbclient and an openssh server, and can do all the terminal stuff from my normal pc my current issue lies with samba, with gnome desktop i've never had TOO many problems with sharing folders, however i'm stuck where to proceed in regards to editing smb.conf as there's a lot of options, some of which i'm not sure i need
- I've changed the workgroup to home
- under authentication i have security = share
- i added the following section
Code:
Anyway on my windows xp pro machine, i can access \thork which is the machine and i see 'media-stuff' which is a start i guess, but im refuesed access automatically.

I am trying to setup a file server for a small office but have hit a couple of hurdles, is there a step by step guide how to setup a network for windows and mac computers to use it? I had setup a share etc but once I restarted the server all the files disappeared which I had in the home folder? Also when I setup users how can I use passwords that I select as everytime I set one it encrypts it and uses that instead of my one?

I'm trying to setup a NAS for my network, the only problem is that I can't figure out how to do it. On my network I have about 3 computers however only I only use 2 of them so I thought that maybe I could use the third computer in such a way that I could access it 24/7 from the internet as a server for all of my files (school papers, music etc etc...). The only problem is that I don't know where to get started. Both of the computers I'm currently using are Windows and the one that I,hopefully, can turn into a server is running on Ubuntu.

my laptop seems to have a bad HDD, and I was thinking of trying to make it a "thin client." However since it is a laptop obviously I want to take it places. Is it possible to make a terminal server and "thin client" connect through the internet and not just LAN?The reason I quote thin client is because in my mind I am still going to need to use some HDD so I can connect to the internet and find my server.
To make things easier to read refer to the above as "question 1" and the velow as "question2" Thank you. And sorry for the inconvience. These topics I felt were to similar to make separate topics.I also have another question, the files I have on my server can be accessed by anyone on the network(added a second HDD and network shared it) how can I make it so that the LAN clients have to "login" (or it uses their computers login info to send them to only their files? And if that is possible can we expand it to allow me to use those logins through the internet?
