Ubuntu Servers :: Desktop Client - How To Install LAMP On Shared Host

Jan 9, 2010

I have access to a unmanaged dedicated server on the net. I am considering loading Ubuntu Server to this for web/mail/ftp serving. If I install Ubuntu Desktop to my local machine is it possible for me to administer the server using Ubuntu Desktop (using the GUI)? I connect to the net over ADSL. Any guides/advice for setting up Ubuntu as a web/mail/ftp with a key focus on keeping to secure? I know how to install LAMP but as I have root I need to learn a little more than I did when I was on a shared host.

Ubuntu Servers :: Moving Websites From Shared Host To Xen Based VPS

Nov 12, 2010

I am moving some websites from a shared host to a newly configured Xen based VPS with Ubuntu 10.04. A steep learning curve but I am getting there! I have a couple of sites installed on the new server and want to test them out, from what I understand I should be able to edit /etc/hosts on my desktop computer (running Ubuntu 10.04) which should automatically redirect my browser to the new server. But it doesn't seem to work.

This is what I appended to the /etc/hosts file:
12.34.56.78 www.xxxx.com

I thought that this should send any requests for www.xxxx.com to 12.34.56.78? Some googling indicated that the browsers I am using may be using DNS caching, ignoring the hosts file. I've tried clearing the cache with Chromium 7.0.517.44 (64615) and Firefox 3.6.12, and even installed a plugin in Firefox to block DNS caching.

Fedora Servers :: Use Yum To Install LAMP With Ssl?

Sep 2, 2011

I want to use yum to install LAMP with ssl. Is there a certain order I have to do that in? If I understand this right, yum gets its rpms from one repository. In order to maintain the rpms I will need to know the installation layout of each rpm. How will I find this information?

Also, can I tell yum to go to a certain place and get that rpm? For instance, I've been reading linux topia. Can I tell yum to get that mysql rpm?

Once mysql is installed, how do I start it and get into the client/monitor?

Networking :: Samba Shared Printer: Install The Driver In A Windows Host?

Oct 20, 2010

I have found that there are certain things on the web that I need to print, that simply refuse to work under linux. I have a samba printer server on one of my Slackware boxes and an M$ XP vm under Vbox that can access the server and see the printer. The only problem that I have is that it expects to download a driver from the server which isn't available and the HP driver installer won't install if it doesn't detect the printer. Short of relocating the printer to install the driver, does anyone know how to get the driver installed on the XP host? This is so much easier with my Slack boxes and CUPS!

Ubuntu Servers :: Safe To Install Print Server To LAMP On 10.04.1?

Jan 20, 2011

I need to first point out that I am a complete n00b when it comes to Ubuntu Server, and I managed to install Ubuntu Server 10.04.1 (on a screen-less Acer Aspire 5100 laptop) with Apache2, MySQL, OpenSSH, & PHP5. I currently have this server (hosting my website) behind a linksys router with only port 22, and 80 forwarded to its ip address. Now my question is: Would it be safe to configure a print server on the same machine in order to print from the 3 other computers on my router to one printer, or are there security risks involved (like what I have heard with LAMP servers and Samba on the same machine)? I am also wondering if it is safe the way I configured port 80 & 22? It has extremely long passwords, and I also went through the secure installation of one of the programs setting a root password too... But can somebody please help me with my server? I am very surprised I have gone this far in my first 2 weeks of my Web Scripting class too!

Ubuntu Servers :: Using Desktop Edition To Host Website

Jan 8, 2010

I'm trying to setup my Ubuntu 9.10 laptop to host a small website that I can practice and learn stuff with and I'm a little stuck at the minute.

I have got Apache2 and the LAMP stack installed okay, along with phpMyAdmin and can give my external IP to anyone with the http:// and anyone can view my website that way but what I want to do is have my IP resolve into a domain name like ooloo-website.net but I don't know how to do this.

Is there any way that I can do this like register my IP to a free DNS and domain website without buying a domain or using one of those free ones like ooloo.webhost.net or do I need to host everything myself like DNS and the domain? Can I even do all of this myself?

Server :: Install Oracle RAC On Two Servers, With Shared SAN Storage?

Feb 16, 2011

I am going to install Oracle RAC on two Servers, With shared SAN storage (Servers and Storage is IBM) OS = RHEL 5u5 x64 bit

And we used multipathing mechanism and created multipathing devices. i.e. /dev/mapper/mpath1. Then I created raw device /dev/raw/raw1 of this /dev/mapper/mpath1 Block device as per pre-reqs for Oracle Cluster. Every thing looks good, But we faced the performance issue as under.

when we run command :
#dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/mapper/mpath1 bs=1024 count=1000
the writing rate is approx. 34 MB/s
But If we run command
#dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/raw/raw1 bs=1024 count=1000
the writing rate is very slow like 253 KB/s

Ubuntu Servers :: OpenLDAP Install 10.04 And Client?

Nov 15, 2010

There are several parts of problems in my question.

1. Install openLDAP and authenticate clients

2. Simple way to authenticate Ubuntu clients (just like Windows simple domain model, but Linux)

Part 1 What I have done: I have been working on openLDAP for the past 4 weeks. There is a lot of information on LDAP and I have read a lot of it There are several guides out there for openLDAP installation on Ubuntu, and I have tried many of them, and reinstalled the server between tests.

[Code]...

Part 2 Simple way to authenticate Ubuntu clients (just like Windows simple domain model, but Linux)

I have tried to find something similar to Windows client login, but haven't found anything that works. I just need to be pointed to somewhere to read about the authentication model in Linux. I can work out my from there. It must be something very simple I am missing, because when I read som echapters in The Ubunutu Bible, I can't find anything on it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Setup A LAMP Server On An Old Desktop Machine?

Jan 27, 2010

I am a total noob with regards Linux so will undoubtedly frequent this board asking some lame questions in the coming weeks. At present I am trying to setup a LAMP Server on an old desktop machine I have lying about, however there is not going to be a keyboard, monitor or mouse attached beyond the installation process. My question simply is am I best installing the server or desktop version of Ubuntu for this requirement?

I have been playing with Desktop 9.04 and found it tough to use headlessly, however understand that Server 9.04 fully supports headless access. Being a newbie I do prefer to use the GUI to make changes and generally play around, so a UI such as GNOME would be essential. Having read about I understand the best way to access remotely is to install SSHServer and VNCServer and then login over SSH and VNC into the box.My remote machine I will use to connect to Ubuntu is a Windoze 7/XP machine.

General :: RHEL5 Multi-host Shared Storage ?

Mar 4, 2010

Ive been asked to investigate presenting the same SAN LUN to two or more RHEL5 hosts. The hosts are providing independent applications so theyre not clusters from an application perspective. The shared storage location would be used as a common area for imports/exports. Were hoping to reduce file transfer times between the hosts by eliminating the need to copy the files between two storage locations. Some of our hosts run Advanced Server and some are standard. Is there a file system that I can use that will allow multi-host access without running advanced server with clustering services on all hosts?

Ubuntu Servers :: Install And Configure LTSP On A Server For A HP Thin Client To Boot Off?

Jul 22, 2011

I am trying to install and configure LTSP on a server for a HP thin client to boot off. The version of Ubuntu that I am using is 11.04 x86 and it is a fresh install on a dual core system with 2GB RAM. I followed a guide which comprised of these commands.

sudo apt-get install ltsp-server-standalone openssh-server sudo ltsp-build-client or if your on a 64-bit system with 32-bit machines do sudo ltsp-build-client arch i386 for editing the servers IP values use /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf after that you need to restart DHCP server sudo /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart
and update sshkeys -sudo ltsp-update-sshkeys and if you updated dhcpd.conf then you need to update you image also by typing in terminal ltsp-update-image

Everything seemed to install as it should but when I try to boot from the thin client it just times out and says no DHCP or proxy invites received. I turned DHCP off on the router and even tried another router, but I still get nothing. I am at a bit of a loose end and I hope someone on here can point me in the right direction of where I am going wrong.

Ubuntu Servers :: LAMP - How To Manage Permissions

Jan 13, 2010

I have a LAMP server running Ubuntu 8.04.03 Server edition running smoothly. Ive setup several websites on the server and all are ok, but I constantly have trouble with permissions. Everytime I setup a new domain to host, I setup a user specific to that domain. This allows SSH login specific to the domain. The problem I have is that every time I setup ownership in the virtual directories for the users they belong to, the settings don't seem to stay. Initially it seems to work ok, but when I install Joomla and setup the webspace, I always seem to have to login to the server itself to chmod the folders I need to have writable. I cant chmod properly from my FTP client which is weird. How to manage permissions?

Currently I am doing the following:
Code:
sudo mkdir -p {name of domain}/{public,private, etc...}
sudo usermod -g www-data {my user name}
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/{directory for the domain}
sudo chmod -R 775 {folder path I need to change}

This works for a while but as I add new things to Joomla and I want to modify the folders, I always have to go back and redo the chmod and the chown commands to get them where I want.

Ubuntu Servers :: Installing Mod_python With LAMP?

May 4, 2010

End of my first week after using ubuntu. I have setup LAMP for the purposes of my own coding education, place to run php and python scripts.

LAMP seems to be setup fine and working - I even got php5 working with it - however I am having a lot more trouble getting python to work in much the same manner.

I have downloaded the mod_python from [URL], unzipped it, tried to run ./configure and it said apxs was not installed.

After some reading it turns out I had to remove some apache-fork something and install apache-devfork (please forgive lack of exact names).

After doing this the ./configure on mod_python passed the "finding apxs" test but then said it can't find apache2 at /sbin/apache2 and again aborted the configure.

running 10.4 (lucid)

The way I installed lamp was from selecting it in the different options when installing ubuntu-server from disk.
