I must be very thick as i cannot seem to get my dhcp clients to connect to the Internet properly.
on my lucid server i installed dhcp3 server and bind9, i can ping and dig all on the local network. on the clients however, as soon as i go out of the local network there's messages like "unknown host www.google.com" or "network is unreachable".
alright so i set up dhcp server and my clients are getting ip's, can ping each other, and can ping/ssh the server. but nowhere beyond that.
however if i ping an externel site, i get its IP addr, but no pings (100% loss)
im ripping my hair out over this. i know that iptables is right, but i dont know about dns

I have a linux box (fedora) with two ethernet cards eth1 and eth2. On eth1 I successfully configured a PPPOE internet connection. Such that from the server I can browse the internet. On eth2 I wired it to a wireless router essentially to provide the wireless cloud. On eth2 I also configured dhcp, such that the Linux box is both PPPOE and DHCP server.However my clients on the LAN cannot access the Internet.
On passing the routing command I get

The router (functioning as a wireless access point mainly) has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 and eth2 has IP address 192.168.1.1. The dhcp file running on Linux has been set with option router (Gateway) 192.168.1.1. I cannot figure out how to correctly set the routing table such that my clients on wireless can access the internet cloud. I googled and googled but no solid solution. Any suggestions?
I have setup a dhcp server on eth0, & i have static Internet connection on eth1.
now clients are getting ip automatically, they are able to trace root upto eth0 & eth1.
but i am not able to access Internet from client machines. i am using open suse11 as a server.
i am not able to do telnet & ftp also from client. i am able to access Internet from server.
so please help me to configure my server so that i can access Internet from client machines also.
I'm attempting to run a DHCP server on my home network to enable PXE booting for ethernet clients, but I'm having quite a few issues getting it all up and running. I'm not entirely sure what is wrong, but I keep encountering errors in syslog as follows:

Networking is not exactly my strong suit, but I would like to get this up and running if at all possible.
i have successfully setup PPTPD on my server and I can open a VPN tunnel but my clients can only ping the server's IP, they don't have access to the internet through the VPN.
i have searched different forums and understand that I have to create a route on the server to route packets between the VPN interface and my internet gateway, but I didn't manage to get this work.

I have a strange problem for internet. My clients (winxp - S2) can't get internet.Let me explain my scenerios. Fedora 10 with lan (eth0) having direct internet from dsl model, client (XP service pack 2) can use samba shares using dhcp (wlan0) installed in Fedora 10 box. client can ping my linux box.Now problem is: client (dosbox) can ping the google ip address (i.e ping 74.125.39.106) but can't use 'ping www.google.com'. That means ping with ip works for internet from my client. My linux box can. I can use internet from FC10 but can't use iexplorer from my client to have internet. I have enable ipmasquarding in Firewall and dhcpd is running on wlan0 for dynamic ip address of my clients.Can someone suggest me what kind of problem having I? What should i do to success iexplorer for internet? what possibly am i missing?

I have installed CentOS 5.5 on a dedicated IBM server successfully. My server has two network cards. I have configured eth0 for lease line internet connection with a live IP (113.xxx.xxx.xxx) and eth1 for local LAN with a static IP (192.168.0.1).
Now,
1. DHCP is working fine and I can access the server from my Windows XP clients.
2. I can access the server with SSH client PuTTY from home ( with the live IP ) and from the local LAN (with static IP 192.168.0.1)
3. I can access my shared server directory 'public' from my XP clients
4. Internet is working on sever and I have updated the server with yum update.
But, I cannot access internet from my XP clients machines.
I read "The Definitive Guide to CentOS" and tweaked the config files in different ways but it did not help. now after two sleepless nights I am here as my last hope.
I admit, I am not aware of every linux terms and commands, but I am getting into it. code...
I do not understand this command well. Yes, I have looked at man route and that whilst that gives lots of information about the switches I cannot see it in context. I have a server with two nics. One to the Internet (eth1) and one to the lan (eth0). I use pppoe and when it is running I get a virtual adapter appear in ifconfic called ppp0 which shows the public DNS and ISP session IP. I entered the command:
route add -host (gateway IP) dev eth1
and get the Internet to appear on the server. However, I do not get the Internet to the clients. I have turned off the firewall to be sure that this is not the problem.
I have Unbuntu 2.32.1 Build date 14/4/11 I have Samba Installed I also have 8 Sata drives all with NTFS most of them have a lot of data on them. All my drives were used on an old windows 7 system, and now I wish to have them in a server setup.
My clients are all windows users apart from 1 witch is an Unbuntu desktop user. The problem I have is access rights or permissions none of the clients can gain access to my NTFS shares. I am using a GUI on my server (Gnome) as I am not very clued up with command lines in Unbuntu just yet.
My Linux server which is running my company website have been hacked. Today I saw a number of clients (customers) with some fun characters entries on my database. Access denial on really clients.

There is one ethernet card on this computer that will only be used occasionally to connect to the internet. This computer will not have any computers or routers connected to it. So my question is, once installed and running, will DHCP just sit quietly and wait for a request or is it going to complain a lot that it is not finding any other computers?

I have a windows 7 desktop that is connected to the internet via wireless. The desktop then has an ethernet connection which is shared to the ubuntu server. The network looks like this.
Modem > Router > Desktop > Switch > Ubuntu Server My problem here is that there appears to be no connection from the server to the desktop. The server cannot connect to the internet.
When i ifconfig the ubuntu machine shows.eth0 link encap:Ethernetinet address: 192.168.137.2 Bcast:192.168.137.255 Mask 255.255.255.0 However on the windows desktop (the machine sharing the internet) these are the details for the connection to ubuntu server.ip 169.254.170.50 mask 255.255.255.0
is this a dhcp problem? is my server configured wrong?
I don't really have a reason for this currently. I recognize all the MAC address on my DHCP client list and keep it rather well locked down. I was just wondering if there was something I could run on the terminal to get more information on a given MAC address on my network. Something kind of like whois for websites.

View 1 Replies View Relatedwhen I change the hostname on my Ubuntu server, the DHCP clients table in my router is dropped.I'm running 32-bit Ubuntu Server 10.10. My router is a Linksys WRT54GL with firmware version 4.30.15. I'm changing the hostname by modifying /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname. I've also tried changing the hostname using the Linux hostname command in a terminal, but this does not seem to behave correctly according to the manpages (it does not actually change the hostname, or update either of the aforementioned files).
I've also tried using a different router - a Linksys BEFSR41 - but the DHCP table is still dropped when I change the hostname on my server (although this router is not all that different from my other one).
I have a network consisting mostly of Windows Vista and 7 clients and an Ubuntu server. The server provides both the DHCP and NTP services through dhcp3-server and openntpd. In my dhcpd.conf, the subnet is declared as follows:
subnet 10.10.10.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 10.10.10.10 10.10.10.200;
option broadcast-address 10.10.10.255;
option routers 10.10.10.1;
option ntp-servers 10.10.10.1;
The clients don't seem to be using the NTP server though. When I capture the network traffic with Wireshark during the DHCP process, I also see no mention of the NTP option in the DHCP offer message. I am not quite sure if the clients would have to specifically request that option to receive it or if I have to make another configuration to offer the option.
I have a windows and a linux box running DHCP respectively. The problem is whenever my client system boots up, it fetches the dynamic IP from the windows box. What should I do in order for my Linux box to provide dynamic IP's to clients? Both servers are in a single network. connected via switch.

My problem is tha t I need to use DHCP (all our clients use dynamic IP addresses for the ease) but I don't find dhcpd ... nor the sample config file(s).
Note : the new server I intend to use is actually connected on a LAN with an 'old' DHCP server (still under W2K server), is this the reason why I can't find/activate dhcp on my new machine ???

My problem is that I can't access the internet once I'm connected to my VPN. Is it possible to allow internet access through VPN?I mainly would just like to be able to connect, access my local network, and still browse the internet. Is there anything specific I need to change?

I recently installed the ubuntu-desktop packages and cannot get internet through the gui, firefox never gets past the "looking up" stage.I can accessthe internet through the command line and through webmin httptunnel. Wget, apt-get install, apt-get update, apt-get upgrade all work fine from the command line. I have local access to the GUi as well in the form of VNC that is working fine.

I have forwarded all necessary port to to the local ip of that box, added rules to ufw to allow traffic on those specific ports. I use dyndns for a second level domain and have used all their tools to check whether the ports are open and have the results I am looking for.

If i use my DNS name provided by no-ip which i bound to in apache2 i am able to get to the "It works!" page with the domain name but if i use /phpmyadmin after it, it will tell me that there is no such directory.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have openvpn tunnel setup between two CentOS servers. One of the CentOS servers also acts as a DHCP server for some client computers.
Server A= OpenVPN server
Server B= OpenVPN client (connects to Server A with OpenVPN)
The two CentOS servers can ping each other (172.16.0.0/24) via the tun0.
However, client computer connected to Server B (DHCP server) can't reach 172.16.0.1 (which is the OpenVPN server).
I think I am missing some routing in my "ip route show". Following is the full picture:
What command can I issue to get this fixed? something along ip route add?
There is no firewall service on both end. service iptables stop! I can't bridge eth1 and tun0 as DHCP server might mess up the other side. I can't do a push of "redirect-gateway def1" because then clients loose their IP as they send DHCP requests to Server A.
I've been searched for the related topic, but i couldn't found any of them. Basically, i want to set up a server to restrict internet access for other computer (windows box), but allow internet connection for kaspersky to download its database. Here are some questions:
1. Do i need two network card at the server box?
2. There are 8 computers but only 2 are allowed all internet connection, 6 of the rest are not allowed, all windows box can accept connection to download database from kaspersky.
3. Is it Iptables the best, easiest way to configure?
