Ubuntu Servers :: Ntfs And Samaba - Access Rights Or Permissions None Of The Clients?

I have Unbuntu 2.32.1 Build date 14/4/11 I have Samba Installed I also have 8 Sata drives all with NTFS most of them have a lot of data on them. All my drives were used on an old windows 7 system, and now I wish to have them in a server setup.
My clients are all windows users apart from 1 witch is an Unbuntu desktop user. The problem I have is access rights or permissions none of the clients can gain access to my NTFS shares. I am using a GUI on my server (Gnome) as I am not very clued up with command lines in Unbuntu just yet.
i am currently working in a windows server 2003 domain environment and i want to install and configure a ubuntu server 9.10 as a samba file server and i want to allow windows domain users to access the samba shares with windows authentication from the AD , so they can use their windows user names and passwords to access samba shares.i followed the wiki docs and configured kerb5.conf , smb.conf and winbind but i am unable to add the samba pc to the windows domain
On my system have to partitions instead of ext4 and swap, that is ntfs partitions and have two account one is sysadmin and my name csmct. Sysadmin have admin power and csmct is a user account. If I login ed as user csmct. I cant able access those ntfs files. Ubuntu asking me for the sysadmin password authentication. How can I access those ntfs partitions with rakesh password. For frequent access I changed both passwords to same <snip>
Now I have set up a terminal server at work, with Ubuntu 10.04LTS and Free NX terminal server. All works great, over all expectations. But I have some file permission problems. In the home folder I have mad a folder where files that all users should have full access to is put. The problem is that when a user puts a file there, only that user have full access to that file, other users only have read rights. How can I make it so that all files put in this folder have full rights for members in the group "staff"?
I must be very thick as i cannot seem to get my dhcp clients to connect to the Internet properly. on my lucid server i installed dhcp3 server and bind9, i can ping and dig all on the local network. on the clients however, as soon as i go out of the local network there's messages like "unknown host www.google.com" or "network is unreachable".
My Linux server which is running my company website have been hacked. Today I saw a number of clients (customers) with some fun characters entries on my database. Access denial on really clients.
what is the best way here? I have like 5 servers, and I want my clients to access each of them, so in case 1 server is down, they can access remaining servers. Also, it will work like user1 chooses the server number and is connecting to a central database, then reply is OK, and he can connect to the server number he wished.
I configure named and stumble upon the following problem: named is serious about user rights, every config file named uses should be named:named. I set rights to named:named as follows, but they get changed to root:named when I restart named as root. The same thing happens with SELinux context. This results in access denied type errors.
Looking for some help writing a simple script on my dapper server. I want the script to play a short 5 second wmv sound file. So I can tell another program to run the script. What player can or should I use and how can I set permissions on the file and script so my program has access to it . Total newb here
How can I mount a device with specific user rights on start up? I still have some problems figuring it out. I would like to mount the divide with uid=1000 and gid=1000. My current entry to the /etc/fstab/ file looks like this:
I have a few FTP users on my linux server(running vsftpd). They all have their own directory and can upload and delete files in that folder.Now, I was wondering whether it would be possible to create special permissions/rights for users. For example, I would like to make it so that certain users could not upload .exe files, or I want a certain user to only be able to upload image files (gif, jpg).
I encountered a problem when I am trying to access my phpmyadmin the error came up: Wrong permissions on configuration file, should not be world writable!
Having never used it, I did an apt-get remove --purge exim4this morning. Deborphan doesn't show any orphaned packages. But, I see a 44K file lingers as per below.

When I insert some homemade DVDs of a friend, I can't view its contents. DVD works fine on windows XP, but not on opensuse. Dolphin gives an error: access denied to /media/071114_1638.I can't do a chown command because dvd is read-only...And when I do an ls -l I get:
In my work I want to build up a Linux based network, where windows and linux clients are going to share a Thecus network drive.Each client will have specific permissions for accessing the samba shares. I have installed Ubuntu SRV 10.4 with gui and webmin.
I've got a problem with my usb pen drives. If I put some data inside, from the 2nd time I insert the pendrive in the computer I can't write on the usb pen, I can't change my files, and also they are hidden. I've formatted them with the format/partitioner tool in yast, but I can't solve my problem. This happens with all my usb pendrives and also with the sd of my camera. Is there something that I can do to solve this inconvenient?
I am using samba from a windows client to put some rights access on FTP server on Linux. created a folder and I want that a user can write in that folder (put a file for example), but, once he did that, he can't delete or rename the file.

On my Debian server I installed Samba for sharing directories in my local network. I know how to set access rights but I have a problem. I would like to allow an user (example "nobody") to create files or directories in a shared directory but to deny to modify or delete something.How can I do that?Second question, on a file, I know that we can set rights for "u", "g" and "o". But like the NTFS permissions, can we apply rights for each users?
I have this group "cn=admins,ou=groups,dc=home,dc=com" And I've configured slapd in the new way so I'm not using slapd.conf (I think). First I thought about just modifying the files at /etc/ldap/cn=config/....... but that didn't work. How do I make that group into an admin-group with all the rights ?
Problems with launching data files of the nas and saving to them is a kde problem. The dot desktop files have to contain access rights for smb/http etc and even when given these it still will not work. I have mainly concentrated on getting the VLC video player to work as it is capable of playing from just about any source, comes with codecs etc etc. Amazing package really.
Pure K apps such as kwrite at least work fine. I tried setting up samba but to no avail.
As dropping a file into VLC's focus didn't do anything I created a vlc desktop icon and dragged the nas file onto that. It plays and a kde error message pops up from plasma shell - can't find file!
I enable kde automount. The content of that when it starts is disturbing. It shows my system disks a detachable and not attached! No need to worry though. I selected mount on log in and attachment where the server was shown. VLC still wouldn't work.
Next I enable NFS file transfers on the NAS. This has allowed me to use open with directly onto an avi file on the nas. I can also click launch them. Remaining problem is opening files on the nas from within VLC. Up pops the kde message "you can only select local files". The file manager here seems to be an instance of dolphin. This suggest that there is going to be a problem saving files to the nas as well. Looks to be the case. VLC can convert formats and all sorts of things. If I select a file locally and try and convert it and save to the nas up pops the "you can only select local files" as soon as I select ok having set the path and file name.
Strange thing is that working transfers seem to be using CIF even though it took an NFS enable to get it partly working via KDE's automount. Dolphin only allows a CIF set up which has a distinct advantage as a direct ip address can be entered. The automount has introduced a very very long delay before kde is up and running following a log in. Samba is even worse in this respect and both seem to lack a method of direct ip input which means they have to find the server.
One other aspect. As far as NFS is concerned from a very recent post elsewhere nautilus works. Pass on CIF. And of course it's all instantaneous and ok on windows even on vista. Enabling the TV protocol on the nas has confused Vista as it only wants to connect like that and needs drivers. Might also be down to having NFS enabled though. MS might not like that.
I have filed all of this on bugzilla if anyone would like to vote - bug number 695648. Seems to me that the CIFs route should be the default for ease with many users on home networks. I'm also sure that the problem is basically KDE preventing aps from accessing the nas.
I am trying to set up a simple home file-server for media and backups, using an old Atom board I had lying around and 1GB memory, so I don't want a full desktop. All goes well with installing server 10.10, using LVM for my data disk. However, I wanted some GUI tools since I am not familiar with the CLI, so I installed gdm, xorg, and gnome-core as suggested in some threads and forums.So far so good, it boots into the Gnome desktop, but I can't get sudo access with anything (synaptic, gkedit, etc.) - always "incorrect password". I am fine from the console; I reset my user password, no luck; I set up another admin user, and that also works in console but not the desktop.I have no idea where to go next and can't find anything that works in the forum
I have OpenVPN setup and running on my home server (Lucid Lynx). I move around alot and use Portable OpenVPN to connect to my home server. The problem is a lot of the computers I use I do not have admin rights to install the necessary routes to connect. So my question is this. Can OpenVPN be configured to use PPTP protocol? Because I have PortableVPN on my U3 flash drive and that VPN client does not need admin rights to run. If OpenVPN cannot do this, and from my understanding of its archetecture it cannot, but I must admit i am no authority on the matter. Can you suggest a workable solution, ie. install and setup this server software and use this portable client software.
Is it possible to give user only FTP access / browsing rights for certain directory within /srv/www/htdocs and prevent same user to browse all other directories, even user's /home directory on that server?
a friend of mine is doing a small website-project in school (group of ~6 people). They want to use git as VCS and need acces to a server. I have an account on the server from university, but - of course - no root access.
I could create private/public keys for them, to SSH into my account, but I don't want them to have this power I found 'git-shell', which seems to be used for restricted access with git (although I'm not sure whether I understood the functionality).
My question is: Is it possible to configure SSH keys in that way, that the server runs them (and only them) in git-shell in a specified directory (using ~/.ssh/{config,authorized_keys})?
So that they can - log in with their SSH key - use git, execute scripts etc. - use git push/pull from their private+school PC - work only in a specific directory (like chroot) eg. ~/web-project/
I have a fileserver running openSUSE 11.2 and samba services for file access from MS Windows based workstations. My question relates to changing default permissions on files and directories created from the windows clients.

I am new to ubuntu and just installed the vsftpd service by this tutorial: [URL]. Now my question is how can I give users rights to one specific folder? useradd username -d /home/folder/new Thats the command id used but when I login to the ftp the user is able to see all other folders as well ..
From a Win 7 client, I can copy/create/delete any files on any share on the Ubuntu Samba server so long that is part of my nix file system which is all ext4.This box also has and NTFS partition on it primarily for storage. I can copy/create/delete anything on this partition form the same Win 7 client with the exception of Quickbook save files.I have scoured the web looking for anything close to this but have yet to find anything that looks similar. Not lloking for a direct answer but if there is anyone else that has issues copying specific types of files to a Samba NTFS partition.
