CentOS 5 Networking :: Dnsmasq Dhcp - DNS Server Does Not Respond
Jan 9, 2011I got a CentOS server setup as a dhcp server using dnsmasq. I followed this guide more or less: [URL] So, the problem seems to be concerning the DNS server on the clients. In windows I get the "limited connectivity" icon for the network, and when I select troubleshoot it says the DNS server does not respond. Issuing 'ipconfig /all' clearly shows the IP of the CentOS machine as the DNS server, which should be correct, yes?
ETH0 is working as WAN connection and that works great.. no problem with the WAN connection at all on the CentOS machine. ETH1 has the IP 192.168.0.1 and mask 255.255.255.0 When starting eth1, it sometimes says that it can't start eth1 because the IP 192.168.0.1 is already in use.. but that is most certainly not the case. Maybe there's some kind of issue here that messes with the DNS? What's mind boggling is that it works great on a linux machine (dhcp client) and on a windows xp machine. but it does not work on the windows 7 laptop and a vista laptop and a pda device.

May 31, 2010I have a network consisting mostly of Windows Vista and 7 clients and an Ubuntu server. The server provides both the DHCP and NTP services through dhcp3-server and openntpd. In my dhcpd.conf, the subnet is declared as follows:
subnet 10.10.10.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 10.10.10.10 10.10.10.200;
option broadcast-address 10.10.10.255;
option routers 10.10.10.1;
option ntp-servers 10.10.10.1;
The clients don't seem to be using the NTP server though. When I capture the network traffic with Wireshark during the DHCP process, I also see no mention of the NTP option in the DHCP offer message. I am not quite sure if the clients would have to specifically request that option to receive it or if I have to make another configuration to offer the option.

Jun 4, 2010On a Lucid server, dnsmasq is happily running DHCP together with a local DNS; although, in setting up NFS, I seem to have a small problem... I have /etc/exports referencing the hostname of the clients but these IPs change when the DHCP lease is renewed. Unless I restart NFS or run exportfs, I cannot mount the exports on my clients. I know that it would be good to make the all the addresses static; however, I was wondering whether there is another way to configure NFS such as possibly adding in a script to continually monitor /var/lib/misc/dnsmasq.leases and re-export accordingly?

Sep 1, 2010I'm new to Centos 5 (and Linux) and, after installing Centos, I configured Samba, Apche, ... w/o problems (through interactive interface). My problem is tha t I need to use DHCP (all our clients use dynamic IP addresses for the ease) but I don't find dhcpd ... nor the sample config file(s).
Note : the new server I intend to use is actually connected on a LAN with an 'old' DHCP server (still under W2K server), is this the reason why I can't find/activate dhcp on my new machine ???

Jun 11, 2010I have been rtying for a couple of days now to set up a local dns/dhcp server with dnsmasq on a ubunut server 10.04 I followed the basic instructions from several websites, starting with the ubuntu community one, didnt work, then tried some other, and nothing.
In the server the dns works, i test with dig example.com and i can see the time difference, so dns is working. so the problem is not making the dns work but to make the server listen for dns and dhcp resquests and respond to them.
I have desactivated the dhcp from the router so thats not the problem. making a windows box ping the server works, so the network is configured correctly.
dnsmaq is listed as "LISTEN" on netstat, i read in some blog that it should be using ports 67 and 68 but those are no listed, neither i configured them in any moments, none of the instructions i followed mentioned sth about that. i even tried configuring the window box with the ips and dns accordingly and that wouldnt work either.
so in conclusin i have dnsmasq that does have dns set up but wont answer to any requests of either DNS nor DHCP.

Sep 21, 2010I have openvpn tunnel setup between two CentOS servers. One of the CentOS servers also acts as a DHCP server for some client computers.
Server A= OpenVPN server
Server B= OpenVPN client (connects to Server A with OpenVPN)
The two CentOS servers can ping each other (172.16.0.0/24) via the tun0.
However, client computer connected to Server B (DHCP server) can't reach 172.16.0.1 (which is the OpenVPN server).
I think I am missing some routing in my "ip route show". Following is the full picture:
What command can I issue to get this fixed? something along ip route add?
There is no firewall service on both end. service iptables stop! I can't bridge eth1 and tun0 as DHCP server might mess up the other side. I can't do a push of "redirect-gateway def1" because then clients loose their IP as they send DHCP requests to Server A.

Jul 25, 2010Im a linux newbie and I'm some sort of creating an Internal webserver or Intranet for short locally. My local webserver ip address is 192.168.0.1 and when im trying to view this on my xp clients i will type it in the url 192.168.0.1. What im trying to do is view my webserver instead of typing ipaddress I'll type hmij.edu.ph for example and trying to resolve it locally through local dns resolution.. so every time i type for example. my webserver name hmij.edu.ph i want it to redirect it to my local webserver w/out going to the internet first.. I already setup dnsmasq for dhcp and dnsclient resolution. is there any better way on how i can achieved this??im a little bit of confused on how to make this work. tnx in advance!

Apr 20, 2010alright so i set up dhcp server and my clients are getting ip's, can ping each other, and can ping/ssh the server. but nowhere beyond that.
however if i ping an externel site, i get its IP addr, but no pings (100% loss)
im ripping my hair out over this. i know that iptables is right, but i dont know about dns

on my lucid server i installed dhcp3 server and bind9, i can ping and dig all on the local network. on the clients however, as soon as i go out of the local network there's messages like "unknown host www.google.com" or "network is unreachable".

May 23, 2011when I change the hostname on my Ubuntu server, the DHCP clients table in my router is dropped.I'm running 32-bit Ubuntu Server 10.10. My router is a Linksys WRT54GL with firmware version 4.30.15. I'm changing the hostname by modifying /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname. I've also tried changing the hostname using the Linux hostname command in a terminal, but this does not seem to behave correctly according to the manpages (it does not actually change the hostname, or update either of the aforementioned files).
I've also tried using a different router - a Linksys BEFSR41 - but the DHCP table is still dropped when I change the hostname on my server (although this router is not all that different from my other one).

Jul 15, 2010GUys im trying to setup a linux router w/in our network here in school, and i was using a fc13 as my linux router, i already setup iptables for linux masquerading.. i have a 20 winxp client connected to the said router with an ip of 192.168.0.1, on each client i manually configured all of the clients ip address.. i was wondering if i could use a dhcp server to ease the manual configuration.., i already installed a dhcp server. Note im a newbie, thus dhcp server will also provide dns resolution to winxp clients??,, on some thread that i read if the client is linux.. you will just need to add nameserver to the /etc/resolv.conf for each linux clients.. the clients that im using here is winxp, i was wondering if i could setup the server to distribute dns & also a dynamic ip to all the clients..w/c 1 is better?? DCHP server or dnsmasq??

Oct 22, 2010Back in April I set up a Ubuntu DHCP server and a multiple VLAN network [URL] to migrate our various servers, workstations, etc off the 192.168.1.1 /24 network that everything was on because we where running out of address space. I built out the new network and everything worked great except our AD server would never get an IP address from the DHCP server (static reservation) and even if I set the IP statically on the AD server it couldn't ping the gateway and noone could log in. After several attempts to resolve this, including bringing in outside help, we where never able to figure out what the problem was.
Now 6 months later I have time to revisit the issue without effecting the live network. I used Acronis and imaged the AD server last Friday, cloned it on to another box with the same hardware, and put it up on the new network that's been sitting unused for the last 6 months. Today when I statically set the IP on the AD server (which is what I want) it connects and I can ping it's gateway 192.168.1.1 and all the way across vlans to a test sales agent workstation at 192.168.8.xxx on vlan 800 but only if I statically assign the agents station an IP address. When I try to get an IP address via DHCP it fails as destination unreachable. Nothing has changed in the last 6 months on the DHCP server but now it for some reason can't ping its default gateway 192.168.1.1. All of the config files are the same as they where left from the post linked above aside from the vlan id's used where changed from 1's to 100's (i.e. vlan 3 is now vlan 300) /etc/network/interfaces

I interpret this as the server receives the request and the client accepting it but the lease does not last long and the connection breaks. what this could be and why the connection breaks? Or my undestanding is totally wrong on how it works and should work? And BTW, where is that README file that's referenced in the message I receive on the client?

This page allows you to set static IPs, dhcp, and can scan for wireless devices.My problem is that in order to access the device it requires that it runs as a dhcp server otherwise people are not assigned an IP and so can not access the embedded devices static IP. (This config page is for the laymen and so they are not the type who are able to set up their own static IPs). One of the potential options is to have the device connect to the network on eth0 acting as a dhcp client. However this prevents me from running a dhcp server.One solution I can think of is running a dhcp server only if it doesn't detect another dhcp server running on the network.

Jul 17, 2009I have a strange problem for internet. My clients (winxp - S2) can't get internet.Let me explain my scenerios. Fedora 10 with lan (eth0) having direct internet from dsl model, client (XP service pack 2) can use samba shares using dhcp (wlan0) installed in Fedora 10 box. client can ping my linux box.Now problem is: client (dosbox) can ping the google ip address (i.e ping 74.125.39.106) but can't use 'ping www.google.com'. That means ping with ip works for internet from my client. My linux box can. I can use internet from FC10 but can't use iexplorer from my client to have internet. I have enable ipmasquarding in Firewall and dhcpd is running on wlan0 for dynamic ip address of my clients.Can someone suggest me what kind of problem having I? What should i do to success iexplorer for internet? what possibly am i missing?
