Ubuntu Servers :: Courier POP3 Login Failed With MYSQL?

I have so far: installed and configured postfix, installed courier, installed MySQL and SASL. mostly following a guide on [URL]
When I want to login via POP3 with a user from the MySQL database, authentication fails.
The mail.log file contains the followiung error:
Nov 25 18:47:55 asmahan pop3d: Disconnected, ip=[::ffff:10.11.39.33]
Nov 25 18:48:05 asmahan pop3d: Connection, ip=[::ffff:10.11.39.33]
Nov 25 18:48:16 asmahan pop3d: LOGIN FAILED, user=john, ip=[::ffff:10.11.39.33]
The problem only occurs when I try to login via POP3. I can send emails via SMTP using the same account without any problems.

For long-term migration from courier to dovecot I would like to install courier-pop and dovecot-pop3d simultaneously. Aptitude offers me to install one, by removing the other, only. Can this be done without creating problems for the package manager and future upgrades? And why if not?

how to implement a password login system that both sends passwords over the internet in an encrypted form (so my users don't get that annoying message saying "this web site is about to send your password in an unsafe form..." and stores its user data in a MySQL database? This seems to need a combination of mod_auth_digest and mod_auth_mysql.

i have some problems to start my dovecot server. I tried to install it from webmin using "un-used modules" but it was allways the same error: "E: Unable to locate package dovecot-pop3d".When I tried to install it from console using the commands: apt-get install dovecot-imapd dovecot-pop3d dovecot-common - and there are no problems with dovecot-imapd and dovecot-common, but still the same error with dovecot-pop3d. After command: service dovecot status: could not access PID file for dovecot ... failed!
After try to start dovecot with comand "dovecot": Error: mail_executable: Can't use /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3: No such file or directoryFatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.confI've read a few similar threads in this forum about dovecot errors but still can't to fix it.

I have installed qmail on my 10.04 server (Because I prefer qmail and dont want to use postfix) and I would like to just install courier IMAP/POP server without the Postfix (Or other mail servers).
Is there an apt-get install switch that will install just what I want to install without deps; or at least a way to block unwanted deps from being installed.

I have setup a postfix + courier + squirrelmail email configuration. I can get to the squirrelmail login page and run its test and it said everything was fine. After that I am stuck. What is the username and password or if it is not created, how do I create it?

I was setting up a Postfix email server, and I was following a basic tutorial here. I successfully installed all the required packaged, and then set up a Virtual user for the mailbox, and Set up a new user with this.

Setup my postfix mail server and courier-imap/pop. My postfix server now is working with tls and saslauthd, I can send/receive email inside my domain as well as outside. However, I need two separate smtp and imap/pop3 server, I mean two machine - one with smtp function and one with imap/pop3 function working together.

I am currently running Ubuntu Server 9.10 and followed this HOWTO on setting up my email server.

Everything seems to work correctly. If I look in the Maildir the emails I send to test are there.
The problem is when I try to sync my email via IMAP from my windows box (on a different network) it doesn't show any of my email nor does it deliver new email. My email app doesn't give any errors nor does the logs on the server.
How can I get it so my email syncs to windows computer? I am sure it is something really small that I am over looking but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I don't know if you need to see any of my config files but I can post them if needed.

I'm trying to configure dovecot in RHEL6, but seems system won't accept local user login. I've already disabled pam. I'm run 10.10 desktop x64 and when I start setting up an account in thunerbird and enter name, email address and password in the first window and go on to the next next that window flashes pop and imap very quickly before stopping with a showing of imap. There is no edit button and I have not been able to find out how to set the protocol to pop3. Is there and error? Or am I missing something. I like thunderbird and would like to continue using it but my email providers only support pop3. I'm writing to this list because I'm thinking the problem may be specific to my version of ubuntu but I'm not sure.

This is my first post to the forum
I've recently migrated my office PCs to ubuntu. My server doesn't server any big purpose but to provide Internet Connection to the rest of the nodes. Things were quite easier during the windows era using ICS.
Even in Ubuntu we were able to do it using the "shared network" option, simple & straight forward. But things got complicated only after installing "squid". Needless to say it brought in a lot of add ons as far as the http proxy serving is concerned & we are enjoying a better internet(http only) connectivity without any doubt. But we are not able to use our email clients, MS Outlook or Thunderbird
But to best of my knowledge squid strictly is a http proxy hence doesn't support handling requests on ports other than 80. (465 & 995 in my case)
Now I have two queries, 1. Can "Squid" really be used to do what I want here??? using iptables, port forwarding or any other mean
& 2. Can any one suggest a good pop3/imap proxy as good as squid is.

I used to have this setup on an old server and i'm trying to move it to a new server.I have a new box installed with Ubuntu 10.10, sendmail, courier-imap and courier-pop.I've configured virtusertable/local-host-names/virtual-domains/sendmail.cf and such.Everything is set up to take any mail arriving to @mydomain.com and move it to a user called "mobileinbox".When i log in as mobileinbox (su mobileinbox) and check my inbox using mutt, i see all the e-mails , but when i login from the outside using pop3 or imap , it says i have no new emails.

recently I've replaced an old windows mailserver with a new one running 10.04 LTS (postfix - dovecot) but I got a strange problem with MS Outlook 2003 and 2007 on Win XP. These MUAs receive new messages extremely slow. Some of messages are received repeatedly. All I found in /var/log/mail.log is login and then (after 1 minute) disconnection for inactivity. No errors.:

And outlooks wait and wait reporting "receiving". What they are waiting for? Is there something dovecot should send them?
At the same time Mozilla Thunderbird and Opera Mail on the same network with the same setup don't have any problems. I just don't get it. Does anyone know what to do to get it work please?

I have recently set up a mail server running dovecot and everything is fine. However, I now want to retrieve the contents of 2 pop mail boxes and insert them into the IMAP structure under dovecot. I need to check for spam and sort them according to sender and recipient.
What is my best software option for retrieving the mail?

I have installed Mysql in Ubuntu 9, for the use of roundcube database.After installing iam getting the error like this

* Checking for corrupt, not cleanly closed and upgrade needing tables.
So because of this in the roundcube configuration its giving the error message that MYSQL is not installed. So Kindly give me a idea how to solve this.

I'm having trouble using my hotmail account on Evolution. It used to work just fine but I when I opened Evolution today the following error ocurred: Could not login on server POP3 pop3.live.com. Error when sending username: -ERR command not expected now It then asks me to put my hotmail password... which I do and the same error appears again. Can someone tell me what's going on?

How can I download Mail from Dovecot POP3 Server to new Dovecot POP3 Server of all users and will always run every minute. I've tried fetchmail and getmail but only in one user and need to run fetchmail or getmail to retrieve new emails.

Today I installed Ubuntu 10.04 and plan to install mysql server on it. I use the following command,but it failed:

I realized the system would need to be update, then I use this command both in Synaptic Manager and terminal:

I am trying to get mysql to start at boot without any success.
The mysqld scripts works fine when run from the command line, but it does not work when i use the links created by chkconfig. I checked the boot.log and found that mysql starts but then it stops or gets shutdown. This is the log message:
Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /data/mysql [ OK ]
Starting cups: [ OK ]
STOPPING server from pid file /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid

The same init script works fine in Ubuntu.

I'm having problems with a mysql install on a ubuntu server edition.
I forgot the mysql root password(or maybe it's always been screwy), so I attempted to reset the root password using this:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure mysql-server-5.0
However this did not work.
So I decided to run

sudo apt-get purge mysql-server-5.0 && sudo apt-get install mysql-server-5.0
And re-entered the root password and again I still can't login!
This is the error I keep getting.

ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)
Is there any further steps I can do to wipe this crappy mysql install?

I've just upgraded my 9.4 to 9.10 on my 64bit desktop PC. Shortly afterwards I noticed that MySQL had gone away. There was no mysqld running. I tried a restart to no effect. So tried an un-install and re-install with the Package Manager. This failed! There was quite an extensive message in details, which started:-

dpkg: error processing mysql-server-5.1 (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
dpkg: dependency problems prevent prevent configuration of mysql-server
And it goes on, but that's the essence of it. I subsequently tried a complete removal and re-install, to no avail.I notice that /var/log/messages contains:
