Ubuntu Servers :: Building RAID Server With 10.04 LTS

I've been running my dedicated server on Ubuntu 10.04 for 300 days non-stop so far (touch wood). I'm planning to purchase a dedicated server to host many large sites. The specs are Sandybridge Xeon with 16 bay x 2TB storage using RAID5 (Adaptec RAID 51645).I don't have experience with RAID, but I read that ext4 can only support filesystem up to 16TB, my plan for the system is to have 32TB of storage. How can I make Ubuntu run this configuration?
Also, can Ubuntu 10.04 recognize the Adaptec card? Going through Adaptec website there is no mention of drivers for Ubuntu (although many other distros are available).

I'm looking at building a small NAS setup for my home to hold all my media (DVD's, pictures, music etc..). I'm not too concerned with backups of it at this point as I have all the data elsewhere as it is, but would like one central spot to access it.
A friend of mine turned me on to Ubuntu to do this with but he's never tried it, so I'm looking to see if anyone else has done this or if there issues with it. I've used linux off and on for several years, but this would be my first Ubuntu install.
I'm looking at either using some older hardware I have sitting around, or something cheap like a small dell server (T310 or something). I'd get 4 2TB drives and just use them in a software raid 5 array. It would be accessed with a few different samba shares I'm thinking.

was originally looking to setup some kind of NAS in my house due to the fact that me and my wife both access the same music libraby, photo library etc. and was looking at one of the IcyBox enclosures.I realised that whilst this was a quick and possibly easy way to set something up, it wasn't in keeping with the true geek within so decided to look into setting up a full RAID5 file server. This would then allow me to install and setup various other services such as Web and FTP server, Mail server and DNS server should I ever want to.
I have an old machine (Duron 1GHz I think) with 1GB ram but the only problem is that is doesn't have an on board SATA controller so I was wondering what PCI SATA controller cards work with Fedora? Doesn't need to have RAID capabilities since i'll be using Software RAID anyway, just need a nice cheap Fedora friendly controller card that'll do the job.

I need some advice or tips or maybe your own experiences about building a home data storage or NAS.Here's some thoughts / requirements I think it should have:It should expandable. I'll stick a couple of 1TB HDDs and a little later I'll stick some moreIt should easily integrated to both Ubuntu and Windows 7. Ideally it'll be an integrated part of the filesystem.I'm thinking some sort of RAID as a backing up my data. RAID 1 seems like a such a waste but then again, these days, HDDs are cheap.And when I do add more HDDs, I'd like them to appear as one big storage unit instead of separate drives.Any suggestions and tips on how to go about this is welcome. Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.
Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:
mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]
I was able to examine the disks though:

I don't care so much the practicality and needlessness of actually setting up a computer for proxy server for personal usage, but none-the-less, i want to do it, and i'm just wondering about hardware.The proxy, i don't intend on having a desktop environment, so it'll be a terminal interface.But for a system that will handle traffic for 3 pc's and a ps3, how much hardware would one suggest i need, as far as RAM, HDD space, so on and so forth.
I was thinking it would be fun to do with with my old amd k6-2 processor and it's 32mb of ram, but in order for that pc to work, i'll need to replace a few hardware pieces, and before i dumb money into it and pull it out of the closet, i want to find out if it would even be worth my time to do it.

I want to install Fedora 10 but need to build RAID (bcraid) drivers so the installation will see my RAID array. I'm currently running Fedora 6 & thought this would be the process:
1) Install kernel source
2) Modify configuration to include bcraid drivers.
3) Build new kernel
4) Replace kernel in standard build with custom kernel or load driver during installlation
5) Install Fedora 10
I'm stuck on no. 1. When I tried to install the kernel source, there was some problem with "mockbuild" (wot dat?) which I think was a red herring but I now don't know what to do about these unsatisfied dependencies:

I'm building a NAS, based on the Intel SS4200. There are 4 drive bays in the machine for use with SATA disks, two of which I plan on filling now, the other two which I plan on filling later. The box also includes an IDE connector to which I will connect an 8GB Disk on Module onto which I will install Slackware. I wish to have all drives in the box show up as one contiguous volume. What partitioning/LVM/RAID configuration can I use which will allow me to:
1. Add a disk and transparently grow the available space of the volume?
2. Replace a disk with a larger disk and transparently grow the available space of the volume?
3. Lose a disk to hardware failure and replace it with a new one with no data loss?
If I use RAID 5, I'm pretty certain I can get numbers 1 and 3 above, but I'm not sure about number 2. The downside is that I'd have to start with 3 disks in the machine, and I'm unsure if adding a 4th disk whose size is larger than each of the 3 starting disks would lead to wasted space. For instance, if I start with three 1TB drives in RAID 5, and then add a 2TB 4th drive, would my available size go from 2TB to 3TB? Or from 2TB to 3.xTB?
Is it important in a RAID 5 setup to have all disks the same size? With LVM, I can certainly get number 1 above, but what about 2 and 3? I know you can use LVM to present many disks or partitions as one contiguous volume, but if I have two 1TB drives in one volume, and only have 300GB of data, then would the second drive remain empty until I broke the 1TB barrier? In this case, it's wasted space from the get go. I suppose another option would be to start with RAID 1 until I can afford a third disk.
When adding the new disk, could I switch to RAID 5 without data loss? I'm planning on maintaining a full mirror of the NAS on some USB disks as a backup, so if configuration changes to the NAS require wiping the disks and restoring from backup, it's not a total loss. However, it certainly makes me nervous to be in a state where only one copy of the data exists, so I'd rather find a solution where I can add and upgrade disks in the NAS without relying on the backup copies.

How much doo doo am I going to get into if I haven't done it a few times? Trust me when I tell you its no thrill formatting and reformatting a 8tb raid drive or the individual disks if it screws up. Been on that ride way too long already. Need things to go smoothly. This is not a play toy server, but will be used in a business.

I have two of them connected to the on board ICH7 SATA controller (sdb and sdc), and two of them connected to an external Silicon Image SiI 3132 controller (sdd and sde). sda is my boot disk split into several partitions and is also connected to the onboard SATA.
Everything is working fine before I create the array, here are my hdparm outputs:

I received some errors while running a benchmarking script to determine my ideal raid chunk size. There are several errors in the kernel log regarding the sata link and eventually the two drives i have connected to a pci express x1 sata card were no longer present in /dev/

Ran 'do-release-upgrade -d'on my server running Hardy.No problems during the upgrade.Rebooted after the upgrade completed, and I was presented with the new plymouth screen. This sucks for servers.It sat there displaying the logo for ~5 minutes.Hit CTRL+ALT+F1 through F8 and didn't see anything on the virtual consoles.Finally figured out that I had to hit ESC on the plymouth screen to actually see what was going on.It said /dev/sdi1 had problems along with /dev/md0.It sat there forever with no fsck status and no HDD lights blinking.
SysRq+REISUB and tweaked the boot parameter to remove 'quiet splash' and appended 'S' for single-user mode.Got the attached screenshot.The box has been sitting like this for ~15 minutes.Not entirely sure what to report a bug against at the moment. Plus the somewhat-new requirement of running 'ubuntu-bug' is pretty retarded in this situation. I'm having a great deal of time getting Lucid Server up and running on my Compaq Proliant ML330 G2. I've put a thread up in installing and upgrading, but people there don't seem to have any ideas about my problem. Since I figured there would be a higher concentration of server users here,
I've got a Proliant ML330 G2, 2 1.4 GHz PIV's
A dvd and CD drive on IDE1 (I'll explain why in a moment
A 65 gb hdd on IDE2
and four 40gb hdd's on hardware ide raid.
I've tried everything, but I can't get the sucker to boot. Installing to the raid array doesn't work. Some array setups won't partition, and others aren't even recognized as arrays. I've tried disabling the raid array and installing to the IDE hdd (my original intention) but I just get bad system disk errors. It would be exceptionally helpful if anyone has one of these boxes, or has worked on one, but I'm willing to take advice from any direction at this point.

We have been using Ubuntu Server at our department since several months now. It hosts a website, e-mail and nfs(only intra).
It was set-up as RAID 0 with two 1TB Hard drives but I want to change it to RAID 1 for fault tolerance. Is it possible to change existing RAID level? If yes can someone point me to the proper place?
I tried "mdadm" documentation and level set option is available but no explanation available that whether it is only while creating the array or it can change the level too.

I am rebuilding two microsystems servers and I need some advice to make my dreams come true.I want to setup the servers in a RAID configuration and want to install a GUI Linux application to manage a file server, manage a subnet, and host a Moodle on my subnet.I am planning to use Asus eee netbooks running Linux as my client computers. I have a few mail servers, a mail log server and a web server running on Centos 5. Now I have a task: to avoid accidental crashes on the production servers while installing updates, my boss asked me to do clones (these clones will all be VMware virtual machines) of the servers (EXCLUDING the actual e-mails and log contents) and then to run those clones on VMWare Server. This way, first I will install and test updates on the clones and - if they will be running without crashes - I will apply the updates on the real production servers themselves.
I have already installed VMWare Server 2.0 I have a few questions: How do I build the virtual machines to exclude the actual mail files and mail logs? Can I use VMware Converter for this purpose, or do I have to use another program? How do I actually do this cloning? Is there a tutorial on how to do this?

I have a total of 4 hdd's, 500gb 7.2rpm that I would like mirrored using raid 10. As you can see from the image, ubuntu 9.10 server isn't recognizing the full 2tb's. In fact, I'm not even sure about the configuration as I was thinking the HDD's would come up as four 500gb hdds. Instead I have the configuration above set and ready for Ubuntu to be installed on.
1. Is this typical of a server pre-configured from Dell(perc6 raid controller.
2.Why is ubuntu not recognizing the full capacity of the drives especially when it's a server install?

I have had no problem installing Fedora OS on any of my Dell servers prior to this post. Anyway, I wouldn't call this a problem but recently, we bought another DELL server with Quad Core, 4GB, etc... AND this model has 2 swappable SAS Harddrives.
I wouldn't call myself an expert but then again I am not a newbie too. However, I have never setup any RAID before and now I am forced to setup RAID1 on this server. So, in a way, I am a newbie in setting up RAID
Would someone please point me in the right direction as I have no idea what I am supposed to do to setup the RAID. FYI, I will be installing Fedora 10 64bit on this server. I would appreciate if you can start from the very beginning, ie. partitioning, formatting the harddrives during OS installation, etc..

I have a client with a pair of Supermicro 6025B-T servers that he wants to have Ubuntu 10.10 64bit Server running on for VM/Cloud experimenting. He needs these to be set up RAID 10. I can go into the Adaptec utility and make the array and make it bootable and get to the point in the installer where it asks me if I want to use the SATA array - then it gets to the partitioning screen and the array is nowhere to be found.

I am trying to connect a RAID Box to the server via LSI 8880EM2 RAID controller.The raid box is FUjitsu Externus DX60 with raid 1 configured.The server is Fujitsu Primergy SX300 S5 with LSI 8880EM2 RAID card.The external raid box is being recognised by the raid controllers bios.
The server runs CentOS 5.5 64bit. I have installed the megaraid_sas driver from LSI website and MegaCLI utility but CentOS still fails to see the box.MegaCLI utility, when launched from CentOS, recognises the raid box, CentOS does not(no mapping being created in /dev).
I have also tried to create a logical RAID0 HDD on one physical HDD(as seen by MegaCLI) with MegaCLI utility in CentOS.The result was success and the new logical drive could have been used, but when restarting the server, the controllers' bios fails with an error (not surprised(one logical RAID0 on one physical HDD)) and configuration is being erased.
Has anyone tried connecting 8880EM2 controller to a raid box with raid configured on the box, running it all under CentOS and what were the results.

I am looking to convert a raid 1 server I have to raid 10. It is using software raid, currently I have 3 drives in raid 1. Is it possible to boot into centos rescue, stop the raid 1 array. Then create the raid 10 with 4 drives, 3 of which still has the raid 1 metadata, will mdadm be able to figure it out and resync properly keeping my data? or is there a better way to do it?

I have a box that doesn't have a Raid controller or a software raid running currently. I would like to make it a RAID 1. Since it seems there isn't any IDE RAID controllers hardly around, I have another HD that is the exact model as the drive currently in the box running CentOS. Can I some how add the second drive and get the box to mirror from here own out? The box gets really hot and I want to be ready for a HD failure.

I have an old tower that I've installed Ubuntu onto. It connects fine online with a mobile broadband stick. I also have an old wireless router knocking about, and I've been trying to network up my house wirelessly using the tower as a router, if that makes any sense. Long story short, this is my setup
Internet ==> Mobile Broadband ==> Tower ==> Wireless Router ==> Wireless Devices.
I know that it's complicated, but I'm sure that it can be done. I've tried playing around with bind9, and playing with dhcp and the like. I feel that I am close.... but no cigar. how to route all traffic from the router

my workplace is switching from Oracle app server to Tomcat. I've never been a sysad, and never administered an app server. So that part is going to be completely new to me.ortunately, I don't have to be the primary on this - but my manager is encouraging me to learn the setup and how to do the job.So, my situation is that my test "server" is a P2 with 256MB of RAM. I know I'm not going to get screaming performance out of it, but all I really need it to do is run my web server and file server to support my Tomcat install on a separate box (P3, 2.8GHz, dual-core with a gig of RAM).
I'm not really a n00b to Linux, so building the system isn't a stumbling block. Which distro, and which version of that distro, is a stumbling block. I know ubuntu is easy to set up, and very popular. If I went that way, should I get the desktop version? Or the server version? I *want* the GUI, but don't require it. And I'm not real certain what they're referring to (hw or sw) when they call it "desktop" or "server".I'm not looking for a challenge to broaden my horizons in terms of my Linux knowledge - I just want something I can set up quickly so I can get on with learning what I need to about the server installation, configuration and administration.
