Ubuntu Servers :: Login Directly Using Rdesktop Instead Of Logging Locally?

Jan 29, 2011

There's a way to login directly using rdesktop, instead of logging locally using the gnome session manager? Like, starting x, then typing a user and pass to login direct in a Windows server?

Ubuntu :: GDM: Logging On Locally Without Entering Password?

Jun 10, 2010

Any idea how to log a user in without a password in GDM? I've found this archived thread but it doesn't appear to do anything when I tried what it says: [URL] I'm not looking for auto-login. I'd simply like one user to be able to click on his name and it will log in without prompting for a password.

Server :: Can't Log In Locally (keep Getting Login Prompt Over And Over) On Red Hat EL5?

Nov 19, 2010

We've set up a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 server and can log into it remotely just fine (with root and other users), but if I try to log in locally with a keyboard and monitor connected to the machine, I keep being returned to the login prompt. If a login is incorrect, I get an error message, but if it is correct then the screen just blanks and shows the login prompt again. While booting the only error message that comes up has to do with SNMPD, so I don't think it's related.

I read this post on the forum which seemed like a similar problem but it didn't help (I wasn't getting the "Module is unknown" message he was). I also read another post somewhere that said he was having the problem because the server was trying to use AD to authenticate, but I checked that and it's not the case with our server. From what I'm told (I didn't set up the server myself) it used to work fine, but then "something" happened one day that made it do this.

Security :: Able To Locally Login As Root With ANY Password ?

Jan 20, 2010

Found a major security hole in one of my more crucial linux servers today. (Only locally) I can use the user name "root" and any string for the password. So I can literally type "poop" as the password and the server lets me in. I know how to set root password settings for SSH and sudo, but where are settings located for local access that would allow something like this?

Ubuntu Servers :: Setting Up DynDns + Free DNS Service For Hosting Locally

Jun 24, 2011

I have an Ubuntu Server, a dyndns account and an account with [URL]. My DynDns stuff is all working just great - novo.dyndns.tv is the address. Now I need a domain which I have already bought, to be linked to that machine at [URL] I signed up with freedns.afraid.org and now I am a bit confused at what records to add where. I added a domain - [URL] then setup a webforward as follows: redirect from [URL] and redirect from[URL] to [URL] , however if you go and visit:[URL] you will see my problem! It takes you back to [URL] server and says there is not a webforward setup for [URL]This tells us that the nameservers are all setup fine - and its something in my freedns config which is failing.

Ubuntu Servers :: Setup Postfix To Relay Email It Cannot Deliver Locally?

Jul 17, 2011

I'm trying to setup postfix (or exim, I don't mind which), so I can move away my last remaining PC from Windows.I've tinkered with Postfix for good part of a month and I can get it to accept emails using SMTP and post them to a virtual mailbox based on MySQL tables. And it rejects mail addressed to local email addresses that it can't find in the table.

First question (or problem.) I've set up Postfix to relay email it cannot deliver locally such as is the case when you send out an email. My remote host requires authentication. How can I set this up?

Second question: I want to force my clients to use either AUTH, TLS or SSL, and not allow anonymous connections (to prevent an open relay server.) How do I set that up without interfering with the smarthost setting? The smarthost login is not one of my clients, it's a pre-determined login and password that is solely used for the email relaying aspect.

Fedora Servers :: Files Show Up When Viewed Through NFS But Not Locally?

Jul 19, 2011

I have just tested this 3 times now and everytime I got the same result. I have two identical servers, they are both IBM x345 and everything has been copied directly from one to the other so they are exact duplicates other than the hard drive and partition sizes. When copying over the /svn directory it looks like everything copied successfully (I have tested rsync and cp) but when I go to look at the files locally there is nothing there. I can view the files without issue over the nfs share that I am using to copy the files but nothing is there locally. Even df shows that there is nothing there. The other server on the network shows the files there and using du I can see that the size is correct on all of them.

Before anyone suggests this is a permission issue, I was using root to see if the files are there but even root does not see anything. I am completely lost on this and even google does not seem to come up with anything. The servers are running fedora 12, the /etc/exports file is placed below.

Code:
/ export 10.0.0.201(rw,no_root_squash)

General :: Wake From Screensaver Directly To The Login Screen In Ubuntu?

Mar 16, 2010

I've got Ubuntu 9.10 with a user account for my wife, and one for myself. "Wake-from-screensaver" should result in "choose user" without having to enter any password. I know how to do that in Windows, but I'm not good with Linux (yet). get past the login screen without passwords (after booting, and after choosing "switch user"), but once the screensaver kicks in and I wake it up again, the system does not present the "choose user" screen. Instead, it either turns off the screensaver and presents the desktop of the most recent user, or (if the screensaver is set to lock the screen) prompt for the user's password (which can be handily surpassed by clicking the "switch user" button and choosing the same user again). So, the login ("choose user") screen has been dealt with. How do I make the (any) screensaver return to the login screen at wake, rather than to the current user's desktop? Windows can do this, I'm sure Linux can too - but how?

OpenSUSE :: Shutdown Gnome Directly Without Getting Exited Into The Login Screen?

Dec 10, 2010

I am running Opensuse 11.3 which had the KDE desktop loaded by default. I have since installed the Gnome desktop which I access via the log in screen whenever I want to use it.

One thing that is annoying me is that whenever I load gnome I am unable to shut down the computer directly from the gnome panel.

When I click the shutdown button, I want the computer to shut down, but rather gnome exits into the login screen and it is from there that I need to click the shutdown button in order to shutdown the computer.

Is there a way to avoid this and be able to shutdown from the gnome panel?

I do not want to uninstall KDE as a solution, I would like the flexibility of having both desktops.

Ubuntu Servers :: Setup Access Properly From A Public Address To A Monitoring Server That Works Fine Locally?

Apr 19, 2011

I've spent days trying to setup access properly from a public address to a monitoring server that works fine locally. Everything works from public access until I try to link to a CVS repository. The rancid CVS repository is set up as a separate server (virtualhost). It appears the referring link causes a DNS error (105: Server Not Found) when the CVS repository server is accessed from the public address. Things work fine when accessing via localhost.

Localhost link:

[URL]

Public link: (this results in 105 error caused by redirection (bold portion of link))

[URL]

Code:

Virtualhost config:
LoadModule jk_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_jk.so
JkWorkersFile /etc/apache2/workers.properties
JkLogFile /var/log/apache2/mod_jk.log

Ubuntu Servers :: Streaming Directly From /www/video/foo.avi

Jan 4, 2010

I don't know why, but I can't seem to just play video files (stream them) directly through the internet using MPC or any other media player. It is a bit weird, because I think I was able to just a month ago. I have made some changes to the general setup of the apache server, but nothing major, and I have no chance of reversing it all.

Instead, when I try opening the url using "Open file" it doesn't just open it an begin playing from the internet, but instead appears to be frozen. However, If I let it be "frozen" long enough, it will eventually play the file, indicating that it has downloaded the entire file to a temp location on the hard drive.

Is it something with the permissions? Actually, I went and made everything in /var/www/ 777, as it is not known by a domain name or registered anywhere. I am just connecting though my IP address as the server is located locally. Even this didn't help.

Ubuntu :: GDM Auto Login Doesn't Work After Logging Out?

I can set a delay in the automatic login so that someone is given a chance to log in using their own account, no problem. But if the autologin user logs out, then gdm does not automatically log it back in. This is where I'm stumbling. It seems that for such kiosk uses like this such behaviour would be a bug and not a feature.
