Ubuntu Security :: Using An Emulator Will Open The Pandora's Box?
Nov 7, 2010
I want to raise an issue that needs some expert to help explain. As we know, Windows software can be run from GNU/Linux using an emulator. In that case, can some windows-borne virus or malware get an opportunity to infect your GNU/Linux system through the emulator?
I myself am switching to GNU/Linux because of the windows viruses. However, I still have many important database software that can only be done in windows environment. Currently all my windows stuff is quarantined in a separate partition(And I'm sure it contains some virus). I am worrying using an emulator will open the Pandora's box.
I am trying to enable local storage with adobe flash on fedora 13. I go to the global settings web page, but it will not let me check the box to enable local storage.I am trying to get this to work with Pandora Radio.I also installed Adobe Air, but it will not let me install the pandora one desktop.
I recently installed the VisualBoy Advance emulator using the following in the root terminal: "sudo apt-get install visualboyadvance". I also installed a ROM for Pokemon FireRed. I know the ROM works because I ran it, but a pop-up came up that told me that the 1M sub-circuit wasn't properly configured. After searching the internet, I figured out that I have to change the options/settings on the Emulator from 64K to 128K. However, I don't know how to open the Emulator because it doesn't show up under my Applications or my Installed software. where/how I can open Emulator to change the settings?
I opened KPackageKit in my new Fedora system. I want to get wine. The description says "A Windows 16/32/64 bit emulator". But wine stands for Wine Is Not an Emulator.
It was working fine. Now, when I boot the computer(9.10 32 bit), I get the message asking me about the certificate. But Pandora never seems to load. I tried to reinstall the AIR app, but it tells me that it is running. I can't find it though. If I try to open Pandora again, nothing ever happens
I'm running 64-bit Natty Narwahl, and I'm trying to figure out how to get Pandora on Adobe Air. After enough searching I got Adobe Air to install, but I can't get it to install Pandora. It keeps telling me to try again or, if it keeps happening, contact the publisher. Also, I can't seem to understand if this is just Pandora One subscription that I can do this with, or if I can just use the non-subscription service with it.
Every time i try to watch a video, it says that i need to install plugins and stuff. i already did all of that. I even went to the software center and downloaded the restricted file thing that had the flash player in it.
I don't know what I did, but I did something recently, as Pandora keeps getting dependency errors. Pandora is working just fine, but if I open the Software Center, it tells me it needs to fix itself before it can do anything. If I do this, Pandora gets removed. And I have an error box next to the Pandora icon on the upper right bar, telling me: An error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: 'Error: BrockenCount>0' This usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies. And this is on a 64bit Maverick install, though it was doing the same on the 64bit Lucid install (I just did the Maverick beta upgrade today).
Also, in a terminal: Code: -desktop:~$ sudo apt-get -f install Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Correcting dependencies... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required: kdesudo update-manager-kde Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
The following packages will be REMOVED: com.pandora.desktop.fb9956fd96e03239939108614098ad95535ee674.1 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded. After this operation, 1,114kB disk space will be freed. Do you want to continue [Y/n]?
I use Pandora desktop app, so I don't want to remove it. But I don't have any idea what the problem here is.
I am so tired of this funky blue icon for Pandora radio applet in AWN. There is no option to change the icon anywhere.I have no idea where to find it even,Can this be changed? Is there some location it is hiding that I can go in and change it with something nicer?
Has anyone gotten the Pandora desktop app to work on Unity? It was working fine with 10.10, but it no longer launches on Unity. Has anyone else ran into this?
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit today and I installed Adobe Air with no problems. I then installed the Pandora Desktop application and that installed fine as well. After the installation I saw a "do not enter" style sign in my status bar on the desktop. When I hover over it it's telling me an application has a broken installation. When I go into Synaptic and filter for broken I see "com.pandora.desktop.fb9956fd96e03239939108614098a d95535ee674.1" is showing broken. The description is just <> <>. Both Adobe Air and Pandora are working fine, and I'd be happy to ignore this warning except it's going to break my updating because it throws a warning every time.
Does anyone know how I can see what is apparently broken with the install or how I can suppress this message? I had the same versions of software running on 10.04 just fine before I formatted, and I'm the only person on the internet with this problem so far.I've gone over dependencies several time and don't see anything missing. I've tried reinstalling both apps several times. I don't know why this is even showing in Synaptic, since it's a sub app of Air...
running debian lenny and iceweasel. the front page of pandora radio will start loading but it will never finish. if i click the "about" link on the bottom of the page, i can navigate to the login page and login but i can't play any music. it just won't start.
i have a similar problem on videos. some videos play fine, others won't start. everything works fine on my windows xp laptop running firefox 4. i'm suspecting problems with iceweasel and/or the flash player (i have the gnu one installed). are there any know issues?
is iceweasel port/fork of firefox? can i install firefox ??
I have a pretty quick machine, quad core 2.66GHz duo processor, nice ASUS motherboard, high speed memory bus and so on. Basically, this is not a machine that's getting "maxed out" by playing some music.Load averages for the 4 processors according to htop are 1.48, 1.25, 0.85. Looking at the System Monitor CPU history I am seeing an average of perhaps 25% load.
However, when I am in a shell, I am getting a second or longer waits between key presses at times. My only guess as to why is that may be is that the streaming audio is on some very high priority so everything else gets put on the back burner. In any case, does anyone have any experience with this and a possible tweak that would give everything else a "fair go" so things didn't seem so unresponsive?
after a few recent updates, i've noticed firefox is crashing like crazy.5-10 minutes with pandora loaded... crash.2 minutes of videos videos... ka-boom.anyone else seeing this? i tried to report it to bugzilla but the 02938472093874 packages it wanted to download never finished, so i couldn't give an actual report.
how efficient and effective are these snort, argus, ossec etc etc for an organization having 3500 PC Network, connected through 700+ Cisco Devices (Layer 2 and Layer 3), and scattered on 130 different sites (geographically)? what should be the combination of products and what should be the architecture for an efficient forensics activity?
I am looking to setup a box to play music from Pandora and mp3 audio files over a wifi connection which will also have the ability to control the player from an Android client.I have briefly looked at XBMC and Boxee, but I have no need to play video files, so I not sure if those are overkill for just playing Pandora.
I'm locking down my laptop. I know I can use a firewall to ensure nothing gets through that I didn't catch, and I certainly plan on using one, but in the meantime, I want to know what exactly is running on my system.
nmap localhost returns: Code: james@james-linux:~$ nmap localhost Starting Nmap 5.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2010-07-26 23:33 CDT Warning: Hostname localhost resolves to 2 IPs. Using 127.0.0.1. Interesting ports on localhost (127.0.0.1): Not shown: 994 closed ports PORT STATE SERVICE 25/tcp open smtp 111/tcp open rpcbind 139/tcp open netbios-ssn 445/tcp open microsoft-ds 631/tcp open ipp 2049/tcp open nfs Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.18 seconds
However, I know that localhost goes back to the loopback interface, 127.0.0.1. So, to see what was really open, I ran nmap 192.168.0.108, which is my laptop's IP at the moment.
Code: james@james-linux:~$ nmap 192.168.0.108 Starting Nmap 5.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2010-07-26 23:33 CDT Interesting ports on 192.168.0.108: Not shown: 996 closed ports PORT STATE SERVICE 111/tcp open rpcbind 139/tcp open netbios-ssn 445/tcp open microsoft-ds 2049/tcp open nfs Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.14 seconds
Now if I understand correctly, I can attribute 139 and 445 to my Samba share. That I'm okay with. What I don't know is 111 and 2049. Does anyone know what these ports are, what's running on them, and how I could turn them off, supposing that they are a security risk?
I'm getting heat from the head networking office that ports 21, 110, and 143 are open. I can telnet to those ports from a remote machine (not localhost) and get a prompt. There does not seem to be anything listening on those ports according to netstat. I've tried using iptables to discard all traffic to a from those ports but I can still telnet to them. This is a lucid desktop machine.
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 recently. I heard that there will be no open ports in the system unless I specifically open one. How do I scan to find a open port in my system.
when i enable my ufw it completely shuts me out and closed my internet connection. i installed firewall configuraiton interface and through it defined rules to accept incoming internet connections on port 80, i can see the rules are there but when i enable my firewall it just shuts me out completely again. when i do(with my firewall enabled):
Code: $ sudo ufw status it gives me: Quote: Status: active
[Code].....
I also messed around with fwbuilder and iptables but since then deleted fwbuilder(besides i just compiled firewall policy and never actually installed it because of errors while trying to install it. Iptables I cleared with:
I am new to Ubuntu. I just configured Evolution email client, every thing is fine. But I need to put password to open this app, this is because many uses my computer.
I've recently installed 10.10 server edition, and I must say it was a pleasant suprise, it's just the way I like it. I use it as a squeezebox-server. But I've run into a problem with the firewall. I did a portscan, which told me there are more ports open then I've told UFW to open. Among which port 25 and 119, when I telnet from another PC to those ports, the connection gets accepted, although there is no answer to any commands (as expected, there's no mail server running). Iptables print-outs also don't mention anything about the respective ports or a daemon that could be responsable, and the same applies to "ps -e" or "ps aux".
Iptables seems to be working, when I remove the rules to allow samba to work, I can't reach the shares, and when I insert them again I can reach the shares. "sudo ufw deny from any" as last rule doesn't change anything either (deny incoming is default (although I never issued the command "ufw status verbose" says it is) so it shouldn't, but ports 25 and 119 shouldn't be open either).
