Software :: Burning Data CD/DVD For Windows Users?
Dec 6, 2010
I know it might sound silly but is there any special Windows compatibility mode when burning a data DVD (containing photos) on linux? It's not the first time that I've burned some photos on a DVD and my Windows friends can't open them. Either the dvd doesn't open at all or it shows that the DVD is full but doesn't display any files whatsoever. When I try the DVD back in Linux (both my desktop and laptop) everything is fine. I've got a relatively new burner and my friends don't have old ones either. I usually use xfburn (sometimes k3b) Is it me doing something wrong? I didn't burn it at the slowest speed, but it wasn't the maximum speed either.
K3B burning data and ISO files. Disc Media:Datawrite DVD & CD Discs
Old Box OS: WinXP Pro SP3 32bit Burning Software:Nero 7.0.1.4 Mobo:Asrock P4V88+ Processor:AMD AthlonXP 2800+ Single Core CPU Memory:2GB DDR Optical Drive:NEC DVD RW ND-4550A (2x, 4x & 8x write speeds) [Code].....
My Current / Old box (WinXP)can burn 2.9GB of data over a LAN from a mapped drive using Nero in 7 minutes and maintain file & directory names as they are complete with upper and lower characters, spaces between words and special characters without shortening file / directory names out of the box. My new box (SuSE 11.2) was initially incapable of burning anything, ?Access Denied? I added the user to the cdrom group this allowed the burning of data but the process changed file and directory names. It changed all letters to capitols, replaced blank spaces and special characters with underscores. I still can?t burn ISO files, ?Access Denied?. The time it took to burn the 2.9GB of data on the hard drive of the SuSE install was sort of acceptable but a full 5 to 6 minutes longer and I was forced to shorten file names too.
I changed a setting to allow the full ascii character set hoping this would preserve file and directory names as they are during the burn process. I changed a setting to allow long file names too. I now have another problem, on starting the burn process and after a minute'sh K3B displayed the fact that it was going to take over 1 ? hours to finish! Yikes. After an hour it was going to take a further 2hrs and 10mins. This didn't include read varify. I aborted the burn process, this can?t be correct. I placed the LG drive in my old box, burn process took a second or two less than 7mins to complete using the same data over the same LAN. I've tested the drive for hardware errors, the drive is perfect. Am i missing something, failing to do something or doing things wrong. Is the optical drive or some other component incompatible in some way.
I'll be burning many gigabytes of data on a daily basis and i'm hoping to be able to burn a full DVD disc of mixed data types in less than 10mins whilst preserving the full ascii character set, file & directory names inc special characters and blank spaces. I still need to resolve my "access denied" problem when trying to burn ISO files too.
I don't know what the difference is between DVD+R and DVD-R or if it matters, lol.
I was trying to burn 2.0 GB of data to a 4.7-GB DVD+R and after it finished burning, I got "There was an error writing to the disk."
When I opened the directory of the disk, it appeared that all of the files were there, but when I tried to open any of them, I got "Could not read from the resource" errors.
I tried burning it again to a fresh disk and it was the same except when I tried to open the files it said variations of "error interpreting file".
I checked the log files and mostly it was unhelpfully generic errors, except for this line: "BraseroLibburn Asynchronous SCSI error on CLOSE TRACK SESSION: [3 73 04] Program memory area update failure"
That part was the same for both attempts. What could be causing this?
I want to have brasero or k3b do a data check after burning a backup cd. I know that in Nero for Windows you just click on the box that says "verify after burning". For brasero I see that you need an md5 file but it will be to tedious to use an md5 utility to make a checksum for every file and then put in in a txt.
I'm having trouble burning a data disk. When I burn it ejects the DVD, then saves a log. Here's the last few lines of its contents:
BraseroGenisoimage stderr: /usr/bin/genisoimage: Warning: Directory loop (/home/robert/Desktop/Mount_Directory/var/at/spool dev: 700 ino: 13323). Quite a bit of stuff. You can download its full contents. I have no idea what this means and I really would like to make this disk.
Samba up and running on my pc. pc runs FC12 with kde. A laptop has win vista. The pc can access the shares on the laptop but the laptop has authentication issues to access the pc. Note that windows doesnt enforce authentication forincoming network connections.Using the system-config-samba util i tried to map a windows user to the unix user "feduser". The laptop (named LAPPY) has a user (lapuser) which has on windows no password. What should I tell samba config what the windows username should be? lapuser or LAPPYlapuser doesnt work because when accessing the pc via the laptop, the authentication fails. The only auth that is successful is when choosing the same winusername as the unix username.
Secondary, id like to setup the laptop so that the user doesnt have to provide a name and password, or at least not more then once in the lifetime of the laptop. Note that you cant provide an empty password to system-config-samba. How is that possible?
Strange but not really on issue imho:the samba - KDE control module(kcmshall4) (and the smb.conf) shows 2 shares: the homedirs and the data dir the samba server configurator (system-config-samba) shows only the datadir.
If I want to add Windows & Mac users as Samba users, must I first add them all as Ubuntu users? If so, since none of the other users will actually be working on the Ubuntu Server, how do I disable the other non-admin users on the Ubuntu Server login screen. I am using Webmin to administer some server settings, and command line for others.
I need to learn a few things about CentOS so I decided to install it on my laptop, Windows 7 is already installed on it and there is no CD/DVD drive so I though that I could just create a new partition and mount the CentOS image and install it ... but I don't even see an .exe file so I guess this is not the right way to do it
(Yeah I'm a complete Linux noob, I know that CentOS is not the most user friendly OS but it's really the one I need to learn)
So what you should I do to install it this way ? (if it is really possible)
As I'm interested in user-behaviour-information-security I would like to know what Ill have to turn off or to uninstall to make the ubuntu-pc-usage as anonymous as possible (no musicbrainz, cddb, or alike).I want ubuntu not to send any data to third-party-users.
Last week I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my system in dual booting. I had installed succesfully both but unable to see data files from windows OS. Though I have excercised the options in various resources available on internet/blogs. System takes about 03 hrs during installation process. I am also unable to configure Thunderbird.
System hardware info is as - System ManufacturerVIA Technologies, Inc. System ModelKM266APro-835 System TypeX86-based PC
I'm running Windows 7 in VMPlayer under Linux. I made some changes to Windows 7 to allow it to have two people logged in at the same time. However when I do this the sound lags behind on the host machine.
Is there a different version of Windows where I am less likely to have this problem?
Im using linux (Suse 11.1) on my laptop in my new job, however I need to set up my accounts and any account to authenticate using the existing windows ADC server.
What do i need to do precisely. I have kerberos & Samba installed. Do i need both of them or can I just go ahead and set up one.
It's easy to have multiple user accounts on one computer and even switch between accounts without logging off. It is also possible to have more than one display connected to a single computer. Is it possible to have one multi-core computer be used simultaneously by two users in their own accounts? Is there specific hardware required (to allow keyboard and mouse distinction for each user) and software configuration?
I know you can setup remote connections on windows that allow you to open and use a second user account without bothering the first user, but how about working locally on the same machine, essentially removing the network delay of remote desktops? What OS supports this? Linux Ubuntu? Windows 7?
1) I want to share my drives with other users using windows XP, what settings do I have to make in my Ubuntu machine.
2) In windows, when we want to access a shared drive, we go to Run > and type \192.168.1.10 to access the shared drives of the pc having that IP. In the same way how do I access the drives of another user having either ubuntu or windows?
I have been using Ubuntu regularly for about a year and although it has it's problems I have been touting it's strengths. One of which is not having to worry about viruses and spyware. Some of my friends want to try Linux because they are tired fighting viruses and spyware and the lengths & expense they have to go to protect their system. These people are on the low end of experience with Windows so I was wondering if Kubuntu would be a better choice for them to make the transition. What are your thoughts?
Thought about posting in the Networking board, but I believe this is a much more security-oriented thread. So let's say I bring my computer to a public place, say a library with one open, public, shared wireless network. I connect to that network. Let's assume that everyone else who's connected is using Windows. Can they see my computer (through Network Manager or other software) and attack it (SYN flood or something)? Or does it depend on the network settings?
It was always why did You switch from there or that. I wonder are there (or better yet here actually) Linux users, that where never 'tainted' with the proprietary infamous operating system? I mean those who never *switched*, but had either both or saw Linux first (before MS Windows).
How do they perceive Linux? We , the ones coming from <put whatever You come from here> , are inevitably biased, carry a background noise and a "whistle" fading in our ears. I know computers from the days they came without operating system (just mere interpreters upon a BIOS stack) and really do appreciate the ways of *NIX. But I see my kids growing and exploring all kinds of "solutions" and OS-es and they have mixed feelings:
1. They are not bothered if software "looks" alike if it is functional
2. They like certain features on either sides and miss where they lack
3. They, above all, appreciate functionality
4. They miss gaming support on Linux a lot (big names hesitating)
i have a windows domain and linux ftp server. OSs windows 2003 server and centos 5.5. i would like to integrate this file server to windows domain. And would authenticate users from windows domain.
want to made 2 users in samba by which windows machine we access share, say user1 has read, execute permission, user2 has read write delete update full permission. we have done user1 configuration as premia user. we need your guideline for user2
we change the smb.conf file # less /etc/samba/smb.conf [global]
Friends is there some way to authenticate Microsoft windows users from openldap running on CentOS. I will be very thankful if you provide me step by step procedure.
When I connect with my ubuntu 9.10 x86_64 freenx server from Linux/Mac share folders from client side will properly mounted and I can use with no problems.
When I connect to the same server from windows box, I get this error message:
Quote:
Info: Share: '//COMPUTER/FOLDER' failed to mount: mount error(5): Input/output error Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)
Last two days I was googleing a lot about this but all I tryed didn't work.
Is there somebody share folder works from windows connection?
I work for a school district. We are running in a Windows environment with a Windows domain. It was asked of me if I could get an Ubuntu system on our domain and running without issue, as we would like to tinker with the idea of slowly introducing Ubuntu systems to the network.I have a test system here. I added it to the domain using Likewise-Open. I have Samba installed, etc. Here's the next curve ball that I need answered. All user documents are stored in their individual shares on the same Windows server. In Windows, we use re-directed My Documents, so their My Documents actually points to \serverusersob_dole instead of C:/Documents and Settings/Bob Dole/My Documents.
How can we do this in Ubuntu? I don't care if it re-maps the home directory or creates a folder on the desktop that is linked. Either way, I want to log in to ANY Ubuntu system and blam - I have a link to \windowsserverusersmy_share. I want any user on the domain to be able to do that to any Ubuntu system and have a link to THEIR folder on the Windows server.
as we know in windows xp drive and folder permissions, we perform (folder-right click-properties-security tab-we check, group or user and assign ALLOW or DENY access to the folders) In the same way i want to DENY access to my windows driver sda1 & sda2 from the Debian OS. my system is being used by 3 users: user1, user2 & user3. All can access to all Volumes, so I want to Deny the users 2 & 3 from accessing my windows driver and folders. BUT i alone user 1 should have permission to access them. How do i change that in Debian 5.5? Allow/Deny Permissions to Volumes.
