Ubuntu Security :: Iptables - Where To Find IP's That's Stored With RECENT
Apr 18, 2010
I'm playing around with iptables on Ubuntu 10.04 Beta2.
[Code]....
That's what I got so far. Accoring to iptables man pages: "/proc/net/ipt_recent/* are the current lists of addresses and information about each entry of each list." There's nothing like that there on my Ubuntu installation. There's a file that's called /proc/net/ip_tables_matches. However, it doesn't contain the information I'm looking for. It contains:
Code:
udplite
udp
tcp
recent
state
icmp
where I can find the file where iptables stores the matching IPs? Also, can anyone verify that I have put the rules in the right order for them to work?

According to the man page, the "recent" match of iptables accepts certain parameters (e.g. "ip_list_tot"). I'd like to change the values of some of them.
All the solutions found on the web were about changing parameters for module, but my kernel was compiled without modules support (such that it can be used for installation booting as well).
How can I change the match parameters for my non-modular kernel ?

how can I configure a new "stored secret" in Seahorse? Or System > Preferences > Passwords and encryption keys, in a free translation from Brazilian Portuguese "Senhas e chaves de criptografia"? For instance, let's say I want to add a stored secret to be used with Skype: in Seahorse (Ubuntu 10.10), I clicked on Files > New > Stored secret, select the "login" keyring, type "Skype" in the description field and my skype password in the "Password" field and finally click "Add". But when I right-click the new secret > Properties, I can't change or type anything in the "Details" or "Applications" tabs, So, how can I inform Seahorse how, when or with what should it use my secret?

i'm trying to make a script that gives one output if a directory in /home is older than one month, and another if the directory is less than one month old. I looked around and saw that the creation date for directories isn't stored, or at least i couldn't find it? How is this possible to do then?

I searched the forum and didn't find any threads that seemed to answer this question. I have a large directory of files, and dozens of subdirectories on a remote box I have ssh access to. I need a subset of these files copied to another folder.
Example:
directories
parent
-sub1
-sub2
-sub3
files I want (the files are all the same format, but some have extensions and others dont)
1100
1215
1322
1442
1500
1512
Unfortunately, I need a lot of files, and plan to do this on a regular basis (the files I need will be different each time) I was thinking it would be nice to be able to put the filenames in a text file (one filename per line) and use the find command to copy the files (I don't necessarily know which subdirectory the file will be in).

As I am a paranoid bastard, I made a bash screencap-script for my Ubuntu-computer, so I can check if anyone uses my computer for things I don't want them to do (eg. checking if anyone is viewing passwords stored in FireFox, looking at private files, or other things I find disturbing). There might be other people than me that is paranoid and want to monitor what's going on on their computers while they are away or letting someone else use their computer when going to the bathroom.
This is a small script, I'd like to hear if there is any improvements that can be done, so I can learn more and become better at such scripting.
The script requires Imagick (sudo apt-get install imagemagick) and a folder in the ~-directory (/home/username) called ".screen" (hidden, as this makes it more difficult to "intruders" to find it and it looks more like a system-folder than a monitoring-folder).
The script:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
i=1;
j=`date`;
user=`whoami`;
[Code]....
Add this script to /usr/local/bin and then go to keyboard-shortcuts in GNOME and add a shortcut-key-combination of your own choice for the script. Call it whatever you'd like, and the command you want to run is simply "screen". To add a shortcut for stopping the script, you add another shortcut-key-combination to the command "killall screen".
This enables you to monitor activity on your computer while you're away, saving png-screenshots of your desktop every three seconds in the folder /home/username/.screen/date.
NOTE: I'm not taking any responsibility for what you do with this script. Remember that monitoring someone's activities is never the right way to handle anything. Also, it's illegal many places. Take care and use it only for educational and testing purposes.

I'm probably doing something stupid, but I thought I'd ask here, because I'm stumped. I'm on slackware 12.2, KDE 3.5 and AIR 2.02.When Echofon abruptly stopped linux support, I switched to tweetdeck (v. 0.34.3.2). It worked great, and they recently pushed a new update. I installed it, deleted the ELS directory in ~/.appdata/Adobe/AIR, and it was unable to find any stored data in kwalletmanager. (I got the error that it wasn't able to find any stored data and that AIR isn't installed properly--the error one gets when tweetdeck is started without kwalletmanager running.)
I deleted the entry in kwalletmanager for AIR, deleted the ELS directory again, and restarted it. Same error, and no new entry in kwalletmanager was made. I downgraded to the previous version (0.32.3.2), and it worked perfectly once more.

We have setup a separate partition to keep our audit files, but I am at a loss to figure out how to redirect the log files to be stored there instead of the default.
I am sure it is a simple matter but I have been unable to locate the information.

I have a directory containing a ton of photos, some of which are duplicates but just with different names. Is there any way in linux to find all the duplicates and remove all of them except the most recent version? I know on Windows there are utilities that will do this through a GUI, but I'm using Linux through the CLI only.

I have machine that I used to VNC to on my network with Remote Desktop Viewer from my Fedora 12. When I first connected I checked the checkbox that I wanted to store the pw. Now the pw on the other machine has changed but Remote Desktop Viewer does not ask for a new password, it just gives me a black screen, like I am connected but I can't see anything. I'd like to know if anyone knows where this pw data is stored on the system so I can start fresh. I already tried uninstalling Remote Desktop Viewer and installing it again.

Installing a router, and I need to completely "wipe" iptables (flush I mean) on both computers, and I think I run ufw/gufw on both, so that would need to be uninstalled. The router is very secure, has NAT, etc, etc, and I'd rather setup all that side of things in one point, rather than on each computer.

I suspect this is one of these questions from Window users who see something different in Ubuntu.
My understanding is that the Ubuntu firewall (iptables) is always on. However, the GUI client (firestarter) shows this more obviously.
I suppose I am used to ZoneAlarm in XP where everything was displayed more obviously.
So, iptables in not automatically displayed, but is working, right?

see many threads / websites about how to configure iptables. They say if you use these
rules it will allow http traffic. But they don't work. I like to deny all then allow specific ports open for traffic.So far I tried the script to flush and update my iptables rules, trying to open port 80 and 53 for http and DNS traffic:(I made the script executable, with $ iptables -L -v I can see that the rules are changed after I run the script. )
Code:
#! /bin/bash
iptables -P INPUT DROP

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as a VM in Hyper-V, and accessing it via VNC with a machine in the same broadcast domain. I'm using OpenVPN to connect to XeroBank. I have instructions for configuring iptables to permit establishing and using the XeroBank connection, while blocking all other traffic on eth0. I've followed them successfully. I need to also permit the VNC connection, and haven't managed that. FWIW, the VM is at 192.168.111.12::5900 and the workstation is 192.168.111.2.
The attachment to this post lists the recommended contents for each Shorewall file. Which files need changed, and what do I add to each?

I've recently installed 10.10 server edition, and I must say it was a pleasant suprise, it's just the way I like it. I use it as a squeezebox-server. But I've run into a problem with the firewall. I did a portscan, which told me there are more ports open then I've told UFW to open. Among which port 25 and 119, when I telnet from another PC to those ports, the connection gets accepted, although there is no answer to any commands (as expected, there's no mail server running). Iptables print-outs also don't mention anything about the respective ports or a daemon that could be responsable, and the same applies to "ps -e" or "ps aux".
Iptables seems to be working, when I remove the rules to allow samba to work, I can't reach the shares, and when I insert them again I can reach the shares. "sudo ufw deny from any" as last rule doesn't change anything either (deny incoming is default (although I never issued the command "ufw status verbose" says it is) so it shouldn't, but ports 25 and 119 shouldn't be open either).

What about ETH2 though? Any ideas pls? Am used to configuring iptables on single nic, certainly not a router.

I'm wanting to use mac filtering to restrict access to certain machines. I already know that I can just add MACs line by line, but is there a way to specify a list of MACs? That way it would be much simpler to maintain a list of acceptable/unacceptable hosts.
I'm not going to rely only on this list because of spoofing, but it would be nice as another "layer" of protection.
