Ubuntu :: Security Risk To Run Apache Web Server On Laptop?
Sep 29, 2010
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. I have an Apache web server running that I can access at 192.168.1.102 ("It works! This is the default web page for this server. ...").
Are there any security risks in leaving this running? Is the web server available to anyone outside my network?

When posting results from ifconfig, it shows the hardware address of etho, etc. Would you consider that to be a security risk ?

During a recent install I made the leap to encryption, but /boot must remain unencrypted. Is there really any legitimate security risk to having an unencrypted /boot partition? I mean basically someone can just see what kernel you're running which they could see during boot anyways right? Oh I and keep all my financial documents in /boot/finances/ (haha ok not really, but I am serious about the first part).

I have received an email with a .csv attachment from a bank, and need to know how to view the attachment without risk. Using View>Message Source I see a large solid block of random upper and lower case characters, whereas I would expect to see some readable text mixed in. The email subject and the attachment name both contain data specific to me, but the text of the email consists largely of disclaimers with no mention of my name or any clue as to the nature of the attachment. I am using Thunderbird as my email client.

i want to know the risk with auto mounting flash drive as a root user,if for example there is a Usb Flash drive inserted into the system and we login into root unknowingly, and this flash drive contains an autorun script which calls a new script that can place viruses in your system, since you are in the root it will not even prompt for password and if the script is fast enough you will not even see it executing.

2>are the Microsoft office exploits any risk to libreoffice or open-office software suites?
3>are there exploits for Linux , open-office and libreoffice ?

I need to build a new computer, and I'm considering buying an "AMD-oriented" motherboard, that comes with an integrated ATI Radeon GPU.But, being a big Free Software enthusiast, that likes to have completely free drivers for everything, and knowing that the "open source" Radeon driver, for ATI/AMD GPUs, uses a non-free firmware, I'm reluctant about this... Above all, because I don't know what kind of security risk I'm taking, when using a proprietary firmware.
And, having read what was recently reported about the security of proprietary firmwares, in general,URL... if the firmware component of graphics cards drivers poses any security threat?(I mean, can the firmware part of a graphics cards driver be used to do anything more than executing instructions to display graphics?)

I'm concerned about security of having a LAMP server on my laptop as having any server makes the system less secure. However, if I were to create a new partition and install a lamp server on that and only use it when offline, would the security of my main partition be affected at all?

I'm trying to modify an existing user so that any files they create can be at least read (although writing and execution would be nice) by any other user. The reason is because I need the daemon running my Apache server to be able to access files created by a daemon running under this user, files which will be created and accessed in real-time.

I've set up a server for the first time today and I'm reading up on how to secure it. But I was wondering if anyone here would give me some tips from personal experience on what to do before going online with my website for the whole world to see. I'm running Ubuntu Server edition and Apache. Am I good to go with default settings or is there anything recommended that I should first do?

I am trying to solve a problem where Apache stats aren't displaying correctly in Munin. I've ran through quite a bit of checks and tests regarding Munin setup, but I think my issue is related to Apache, but my skill set there is lacking.
first, system info:
monitored server:
CentOS 5.3 2.6.18-128.1.1.el5
[code]....

I have a VPS that has 512MB of ram. I'm using it as a mail/web server. It keeps running out of memory. I know amavis/clamav are memory hogs, but I checked my ps aux and found 100's of instances of "apache-init-server" running. I killed them all, and they keep spawning back. What could be causing this. I've never seen this on a webserver before. OS: CentOS 5.5

I recently got a nice, lightly used IBM Thinkpad laptop. It has wireless capability for the Internet. Linux is the only OS in the laptop. At home, I don't have wireless-- I have a wired DSL connection for my laptop and for my IBM desktop (which also only has Linux as OS).
When I took the laptop to the public library, wireless is provided there for free and I had no trouble connecting to the system there. But since I'm new to wireless, what do I need to have installed to have a secure laptop when in the public library (or when I'm anywhere else that offers free wifi) using the wireless connection? [I use Firestarter as my firewall in the laptop and in the desktop.] Do I have to install some software to make sure my laptop is secured from spying and invasions when in the library or is the Firestarter enough? If Firestarter is not enough, what is that wifi security software by name?
[My OS is MEPIS 8.5, a Debian-based distro.]

I am upgrading my server and I have a lot of sites. Since I cannot take my server down for a few days, maybe a week until I manage to migrate all the sites to the new machine, I figured I could migrate them one by one. After migrating one, I would somehow tunnel the requests of that name virtual host to my internal machine. When everything is migrated, I would then switch the machines, update ip's and stuff and everything will work just fine.
However I cannot seem to find a way to do this tunneling. is this at all possible? If not, what alternatives do I have?

I 've some problems with my current version 11 that probably has been fixed in the last version (14). I've updated other non-critical systems through the yum services but from 13 to 14. I've a productive workstation working on ver.11. Is there any possibility to update through yum or other methods through without risks of losses data information?... It's really complicated to backing up Mysql databases, web services and other hundreds things installed. I know, it's convenient carry out a backup but is it a higher risk to dump from 11 to 14 trying to keeping the information inside?

I know how to assign file permissions and other tasks like user to group, but I'm stuck with a situation in how I should set up my system. So I have a LAMP server set up. I'm not the only developer so I created a group called "developers" for my other users "Mike," "Alex," and "Cindy," which are developers (I'm Mike by the way). I know that "www-data" is the user and group Apache uses. This is good because only I have permission to update the production site, but for the dev site, it's a different story.

Has anyone used the mod_auth_remote module to delegate authentication? I have two apache2 servers. One is a content server and the other one is the sso/auth server. When the content server receives a request for a resource protected by basic authentication, the request is forwarded to the sso server for authentication. So far so good. But, the sso server should return a http 200 to the content server and granting access to the user. However, the sso server always returns a http 301 to the content server. So I appear to be stuck in an authentication loop.
Content server config:
<Directory /var/www/html/secure/>
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Content server"
AuthRemoteServer sso.intra
AuthRemotePort 80
AuthRemoteURL /auth
[Code]...
Or perhaps you have a better way of accomplishing apache sso across multiple servers?

I happened to be looking at my Apache-2.2.8 log on an Ubuntu LTS 8.04.4 system, and noticed a few lines like this:
Code:
61.160.212.242 - - [06/Mar/2010:07:04:41 -0800] "GET http://218.30.115.246/ HTTP/1.1" 200 295 "-" "-"
61.160.212.242 - - [06/Mar/2010:07:05:29 -0800] "GET http://218.30.115.246/ HTTP/1.1" 200 295 "-" "-"
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - - [06/Mar/2010:07:56:15 -0800] "GET http://218.30.115.246/ HTTP/1.1" 400 290 "-" "-"
(The third line is me telnetting to the server and trying to issue the same request. Note that I got a 400 error response, while the guy coming from 61.160.212.242 got 200s. Also, if you just open the http://218.30.114.246/ URL, you get back "hello" (nothing else, just 5 characters). I'm presently putting together a bootable CD with chkrootkit to run on the machine. (I found a thread that mentioned in passing that this was related to PHP, which I have running on that Apache server, but my Google-fu isn't strong enough to track down the original thread.) (After checking with chkrootkit: nothing unusual found.)

I am installing Big Brother on a CentOS 5.2 running the default Apache 2.2.3. When I try to access any web page I get the following error: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /bb/ on this server. Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS) Server at fmsubbnix Port 80 So far I have:
1) Set the Directory options to FollowSymLinks
2) Verified all directory and file permissions are at 755
3) Set permissions temporarily to 777 and received same error so I am assuming the issue is in a config file somewhere
4) in hhtpd.conf verified <Files ~ "^.ht"> is correct
5) verified the "default" directory is correct (/var/www/html)
I have read and tried several ideas in posts listed on the web but to no avail and am at a loss as to what to look for next..

Does anyone know of any software that can monitor the Apache logs for certain phrases or keywords then send an alert when found? For example I know an attempt to hack has been made when I see log entries like this....
/admin/
/admin/phpadmin/
/phpadmin/
But by the time I see it, the attempt has long since failed or succeeded. What I need is a way for my server to alert me WHILE someone is entering these phrases. I realize there may be a "hit" to performance but my server is not that busy anyway (except for hackers).

Ok, so I have a few web apps that need to run shell commands. Heres a great example of one:
Code:
This is a PHP script getting my system volume. Herein lies the problem... www-data doesn't have permission to do this!
I changed my apache config to use MY account as the web user, and it does in fact work the way I want it to.
Obviously, I dont want to leave apache running as me, and want it to keep using www-data.... heres my question... how can I give permission for www-data to execute certain programs?
