I like the easy readability of fwlogwatch (as compared to the Log File Viewer). But fwlogwatch doesn't display port number or date when I run it in terminal.
Is there a log viewer that displays clean like fwlogwatch but displays all the information that Log File Viewer does?
I need to get the modified date on a file in linux to use in a script.I tried using 'ls -l' on the file, but this caused problems when the date turned from a single digit into a double. The reason for the problem was because I was parsing the result string on spaces.How can I get the date of the last time a file was modified so I can use it in a script? For example, if a file was modified on 1/11/2010, I need the 11.

I want to send this file content to date -s command so I can modify using a cron job.
I tried several ways to pipe the file contents to date command but did not work.
I've tried what feels like at least a dozen different image viewers and I'm still hunting for one that handles viewing by date taken. The trick is that I'd like to just click the jpeg as they come off the camera and then browse through all the photos in the order taken... without having to load them into a photo management application, sort them in their, then start viewing from there. Too many extra steps for too many pictures when you're looking at a collection that is already organized (using the file system, i.e., nested directories) back to 2000. I need (ideally) a viewer where I click the jpeg, then go next next next through them in the order in which they were taken. Does anyone know if this sort of thing exists?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have log files that everyday are downloaded from my webserver in the format: Code: samplesite.com.xxxxxxxxxxx.gz xxxxxxxxxx is a 10 digit epoch time. I am trying to figure out a way in batch to:
1. find all of exisiting files containing the pattern (after the first run it will only be one a day)
2. Isolate the epoch string
3. convert the epoch string to human readable date/time
4. rename the original file as samplesite.com.mmddYYYY.gz
Or do you just use Ubuntu feeling safe enough without them? If you do use AppArmor and other security measures, what do you use them for? Obviously Firefox and Chrome would be two things. But what else?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have set up a user to login remotely to our Red Hat 5 server via SSH. A rule in our department firewall enables this user to login from a single static ip address. The ssh port on our server is 22. I am able to login to port 22 from locations within our department firewall. Our administrator says the firewall configuration is unchanged. The remote user had been successful logging in. But now the remote user gets a Connection Timed Out message, before being asked to authenticate by the server.
I regenerated security keys, but the remote user still gets the connection timed out message. (I can login locally with the new keys). I suspect either a firewall or an authentication problem--inclining a firewall problem. Am I correct? Is there a Linux command to check whether port 22 is available or blocked, prior even to authentication, for login from the user's remote location?
I see these activities logged on a fairly regular basis in /var/log/auth.log and was wondering if this is normal activity?

The question is simple really, I've added a local universality's time server (what is public) and it's live. but it's added to the end of the default time servers what come with fedora. How do I get fedora to just use the local time server, is it a case of removing the default time servers for fedora, but there is a box what says advanced options which are. sync system clock before starting service ???? & use Local time source (( is that the same as the local ntp server that I've got set up ))Hope some body can help me with the network time protocol part of Date/Time settings.

Having dd urandomed the drive, flattened CMOS battery, flashed BIOS, run Knoppix live CD 6.1,using no flat pack battery (laptop), and memtested the RAM, I am still having problems with what I suspect is a javascript file that tries to reload the rootkit from? firmware. I suspect the firmware as everything else should have eradicated it??
Also it or a hacker via a backdoor then corrupts the drivers so devices malfunction. Windows security programs and rootkit detectors don't seem to pick it up. Fresh install of Windows or linux after the above still show this problem, though internet not used. The person who admitted rootkitting this machine is capable of writing java programs or using javascripts to do all this.
When viewed using Ubuntu 8.4 files and dates on a Windows partition appear normal both in file manager and terminal. However booting using Knoppix CD these files are all green, and I cannot change their permissions, even as root. ie: everything is green including text files etc. If I copy them to a linux partition, I can change their permissions and make them nonexecutable and nonwritable. Also on the Windows FAT32 partition the . directory has the date 1 Jan 1970.
If I disable any green files, I can shutdown and reboot cleanly. If I don't I start having problems shutting down [/usr/sbin/init ?] And always these follow a pattern:

I would really like to preserve a file's original modified date and pass it back to the file as the same attribute after a script has worked on it. I get a lot of JPEG files from different places on the Net which I either turn around and upload or burn to disk, and having the "original" date of either download or last mod in a graphics app would be for me, in the long run, a lot more helpful when deciding, for instance, which files to "recycle" or pass on backing up more than once.I've tried doing this on my own every now and then. Where I run into problems is that it appears "stat" and "date" use different formats for date information, and I can't seem to puzzle out how to "translate" one to the other satisfactorily for the latter command.
Just to give an example:
stat foo.jpg |grep Modify gives me
Modify: 2010-07-12 06:28:56.890625000 -0400

I am trying to consolidate my servers for a small office (less than 50 computers) and need file sharing/crm or erp database/backup/ftp/firewall/vpn etc). I was going to use endian but that seems to want to run on it's own machine. I was going to run endian in Sun's virtualbox. While researching I have found both guarddog and Lutelwall should work within Ubuntu (no virtual machine needed).
1. Is there a reason to use Endian over Lutelwall or Guarddog?
2. Is there any reason NOT to run a firewall within a VM on the server?
3. Should I just scrap the whole idea and run a router flashed with dd-wrt or tomato

This server is not in a DMZ, but is instead behind an dynamic NAT. I do not accept queries from the public network, only responses. I understand that DNS is primarilly a UDP protocol, so it can't pass through a stateful/nat. without a firewall allow.
I've done a little reading and learned that bind9 does not run 53 <-> 53 anymore (is now >1024 <-> 53), and modified my config so it works like bind4 did, but I am concerned that this makes me less secure. additionally, I'd really rather not have a completely open 53 rule, but it seems that if I constrain 53 traffic to my known forwarders, it interfers with some of my network services like transmission. so, what firewall rules would you guys recommend for recieving forwarded DNS query responses to my server?
when i am tryg to upgrade to lucid from karmic, update manager starts and shows my system is up-to date. command used "update-manager -d"os karmic 64bit.

Is there any way to verify if packets being trafficked over a certain port are valid for the service you want to use this port for?
One obvious example that probably clarifies my question:
When I open port 443 (outgoing or incoming) for https/ssl traffic, I don't want this port to be used for say openvpn traffic.
Thus: when someone wants to surf to a website with https, it should be ok but if someone wants to connect to his home openvpn server over that same port, it should be blocked.

Shouldn`t there be some kind of LAN IP instead of 0.0.0.0?Does anyone have a possible solution for that? Checked iptables and such, they are not causing it.
I've noticed that every time this desktop is turned on the date & time are as they were the last time I used it, and then have to put in the correct date & time again (this is why I chose the word 'persistent' within the tittle). When I try to change those have to write in the password for the date as well as for the time as if 'login-in' once were not enough! What I want to know is how to put in the date & time and receive the correct amounts the next time I turn the unit on again, as it should be? Do I've to open a terminal & do it with administrator's authority/credentials?
