Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting Xp Machine To PPTP Server
Jul 8, 2011I have been wanting to switch from my routers VPN to my headless linux box VPN. I have everything setup in the PPTP and then forwarded the ports to it. Heres the kicker. My APPLE Iphone connects to the VPN without a problem at all. Views Intranet pages etc.
My Windoz XP is kicking and screaming and one error after another. This is my setup on XP: I entered Ip Entered exact same credentials as used for connecting with my iphone turned off "use gateway on remote network" Changed type to PPTP VPN connecting my xp machine to this PPTP server on linux?

Oct 6, 2009I am a newcommer to Centos. I should connect to internet via a pptp vpn connection. I created the connection in "network connections". In other distrows I could connect to created pptp vpn connection simply by clicking on network-manager-applet and selecting the connection, but there is no network-manager-applet in Centos. Is there any way to connect to the vpn connection I created or I should go to do it by manually editing config files?

GW: 62.2.2.1 (cisco router)
i want to configure my ppptp server to allow users access internet with their own public ips of class 62.2.3.0 62.2.4.0 62.2.5.0
every time i configure my server all users can get thier IPs but they only go out with my server IP same as NAT not routing.
can you show me the proper configuration to make my users connect with public IP and have internet access. use specific DNS ( i did this but some users can not brows by DNS)
is there any way to specify an expired date for each pptp user.
Networking :: PPTP Client Fails To Connect To Microsoft ISA PPTP Server?
Sep 17, 2009I'm trying to connect to a Microsoft ISA PPTP server from my Linux box. The box I'm connecting from is itself a router. I have no problem connecting a Windows XP machine to the VPN via this machine. This is fine, but I would rather connect via the Linux machine, giving me far more advanced routing options (i.e. no to send every packet from the XP box completely unnecessarily via the PPTP tunnel). The Linux router is running Debian Lenny.
I've checked iptables. There were initially some issues. I've fixed those.
Invoking pppd from the console, I can see that authentication succeeds, but then some negotiation goes wrong and the server terminates the connection. Here's the output from pppd, with the more sensitive stuff removed:

Security :: Stop An IP From Connecting To Server?
Nov 9, 2010Im using ubuntu and i run a game server. Ever since i posted my server i have an IP address trying to join my game on a different port everytime, seems random and its nonstop for a week since its been up.

I port scanned them and i think its not a person but some service or server type buisness.
I use a linksys router, i couldnt find anything on blocking IP's at the router from the outside.
Is there anything i can do to stop them before the get to this server to login?

Apr 9, 2010I installed Ubuntu on an old desktop last night and am having some problems with my wireless connection.I've searched around a bit and tried a few solutions but nothing seems to be working so hopefully someone can help. I'm using a Netgear WG111v3 wireless USB adapter and am attempting to connect to a Sky Broadband modem, the connection shows up in the list of avaliable networks after clicking on the network symbol and after attempting to connect for a while it then asks for the WPA password.
I enter the password and then this repeats over and over again continuously asking for the password and me continuously entering it. I know the password is correct as I'm using it on my laptop and other home computer right now.I've tried connecting to a hidden wireless network and inserting the network name and password as some have suggested and I've also tried adding the details from my router into the connection; so that I have manually entered the information rather than automatically finding it, this also hasn't worked.I should probably add that earlier today I seemingly randomly got connected and then managed to run some updates but since then it has disconnected and the same problem is repeating over and over. Sorry if thats quite a long explanation but I thought I'd try and make it as clear as possible,

Feb 13, 2010I was taking a peek at the active connections shown by the Firestarter GUI and noticed the following (the source is my computer):

I closed all Internet related apps and the connection persisted. After a reboot it did not reconnect (yet).The IP address appears to belong to esomniture.com - some sort of web analytics company. How do I prevent my computer from connecting to these rascals. I have found a lot of documentation regarding stopping inbound connections to services on my computer but not the other way. I have various filtering addons installed in Firefox however, this connection seems to be at a lower level as no program is specified as being responsible for the connection.

Now i only wanna one port thru the PPTP Connection, all other NOT. In example Port 52000 on Client. Users connecting to Serverip:52000 and should land on Client:52000, BUT and that is what is important for me, with their Real IP. If i do a POSTROUTING ppp0 MASQUERADE it is working, but the Users in my Log have the IP from the Server and not their Realip. It makes sense because i do Masquerading.
Anyone can Help me? That would be great! VPN IPs are 192.168.0.1 on Server and 192.168.0.234 on Client. I can ping each other. Server Interfaces: eth0 and if i connected with PPTP Client ppp0 (192.168.0.1). I wanna not route all traffic through PPTP, only one or two Ports!
Ubuntu Security :: Pgadmin3 Through Ssh Tunnel - Error Connecting To The Server: Server Closed The Connection Unexpectedly
Mar 1, 2010I'm using Postgresql 8.4.2-2. I'm trying to remote into my server securely. I figure I could do so with ssh. Apparently I figured correctly, as per, [URL] and [URL] I setup the ssh tunnel. ssh -L 5432:serverip:5432 Then I setup pgadmin3 to connect as follows:

user: postgres
maintenance db: postgres
And I receive the following error:
An error has occurred: Quote: An error has occurred: Error connecting to the server: server closed the connection unexpectedly This probably means the server terminated abnormally before or while processing the request.
I'm not sure what the problem is. I can connect with Code: psql from the cli after connecting to the terminal via ssh. So I know that I'm using the correct password.
Ubuntu Security :: Firewall "blocked" IP But Still Connecting?
Jul 27, 2011I was using Transmission BitTorrent the other night, when I noticed that I was getting heavily spammed by one particular IP. I then stopped the torrents and disabled the network.I wanted to add my own block-list, containing this IP, to $HOME/.config/transmission/blocklists, but could not get it working. Transmission is supposed to parse this text file into binary format upon startup. I tried both allowed formats, but Transmission kept on creating an empty binary file (this was version 1.93 in the official repo, I have since upgraded to 2.33 by adding a PPA, and it now works correctly).
I then blocked this IP in the firewall outbound traffic policy, allowing Transmission, on the port number that I forwarded on the router, on the inbound policy. After a restart, I watched the torrents picking up speed as more peers connected, and then saw this IP getting blocked. However, the same IP immediately also appeared as a peer in one of my torrents.I then double checked all settings and log files, to ensure that there is no typo. The same IP that was shown as blocked in the log files, also successfully made a connection to Transmission. After a while I gave up, and shut down.The IP was an incoming connection, but was explicitly nominated to be blocked in outgoing traffic. The firewall was supposed to silently ignore this IP, not making a connection possible.
ICMP filtering was enabled, with the following not allowed:
- Address Masking
- Redirection
- Source Quenching
Now surely this is not normal?Is this a bug in ip-tables?Isn't this a serious security breach?

Feb 9, 2010I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and its great. However when I connect to the internet at home it shows that the connection has been established but I still cant connect to the internet. My flatmates are all able to connect. However, I am able to connect from work both wirelessly and through an ethernet cable.

Oct 25, 2010I'm trying to connect to [URL] but it will not work no matter what settings. I have ticked MPPE, configured gateway, username, MSCHAP and MSCHAPv2 are ticked, using 128-bit encryption. I have tried to forward port 1723 and 1127 in my router, I have also ticked "enable PPTP PassThrough" in the router. I cannot telnet to vpn.itshidden.com. This is on Ubuntu Lucid. Jan 18, 2011I am having trouble connecting back to my vpn at work while I'm at home. Mainly need to get our local svn repos for at home development. I successfully connected to the vpn following this [URL]..I am running Lucid Lynx 64bit and I followed the 9.10 section of the tutorial on setting up PPTP connection.
It worked fine. Then I walked away from my computer and it was disconnected when I came back 2 hours later. I was unable to connect back to it. I used my laptop which is running windows 7 and it connected just fine. So, now I am unable to connect to it and have no idea why. I viewed my system log and don't know what to do with the information. Could someone help me out on this.

Ubuntu :: Remote Desktop Through PPTP And SSH?
May 9, 2011I have to do some work on an Ubuntu 7.10 based workstation that is within a clients network (meaning I have limited ability to change network settings and I would rather not have to ask if possible). I am using OSX to connect. The client has given the the following access:
1. PPTP VPN access to their network
2. SSH access through the VPN to the Ubuntu workstation
3. Generally unlimited access to the workstation OS
4. Client is on a different continent so I cannot physically access the machine
I need to see a GUI desktop however, so I need to run a virtual desktop. Q. Is it possible to run a virtual desktop under these constraints, if so could you point me to help / tutorials?

Aug 15, 2010I'm trying to connect to my corporate VPN using a laptop running Ubuntu 10.04. It's a company laptop but as I have chosen to run Linux rather than "a proper" OS, I'm mostly on-my-own as far as getting these things working. Normally that's OK because I am almost always successful - except this problem has had me stumped for several weeks now.
The problem is that I am unable to access the VPN from my home network. I am using the Gnome Network Manager interface to configure the PPTP connection but no matter what combination of options, domainusername formats, encryption options or authentication methods I select, I get the exact same behaviour, which is essentially a 10-second wait, and then a failure message. I checked /var/log/daemon.log:

the laptop is connecting to the Internet via a WiFi access point (bridge mode), then an ADSL router. PPTP pass-through is enabled on the ADSL router and Access Point. if I connect the laptop to the ADSL with an ethernet cable (to eliminate the WiFi), there is no improvement. another laptop (running Mac OSX) is able to connect to the VPN, via WiFi or cable. another client, Windows7, is able to connect to the VPN via cable. an iPhone is able to connect to the VPN via WiFi. this laptop is able to connect to the VPN from inside the corporate firewall.
So I've got three other devices that are able to connect to the target PPTP VPN, and a laptop that can't, except when I move the laptop inside the target network, it can connect. I've tried methodically selecting various VPN options with no change in result. I've also read several Ubuntu Forum posts suggesting turning off EAP and that doesn't help either. I'm now at a loss how to fix this, and what will happen next is I'll be told by Management "we told you so", drop Linux and switch to a "proper" OS like Windows instead, which I really don't want to do.

Made a standard pptp connection using network-manager (and the connection is 100% fine, working on laptop and on windoooz machine) This is syslog any ideas, i reinstalled network-manager-pptp and pptp-gnome, but no go no go..

Ubuntu :: PPTP VPN Connection - Internet Really Slow
Jan 29, 2011I recently installed Kubuntu 10.10 on my machine, and I configured the PPTP VPN connection through which I connect to the internet. I can successfully connect, but it works really slowly. Slower than it does on Windows 7 on the same computer, with the same settings for the PPTP dialer. In about 20 minutes after I connect, the connection fails and even the modem restarts itself. I tried setting the MTU for the pptp connection to 1400 (I checked, and 1372 is the maximum value before the packets start to fragment + 28 bytes for the IP/ICMP headers), but nothing seems to help.

Ubuntu Networking :: PPTP Works Over Wifi But Not USB Modem
Feb 19, 2010I am running 64-bit 9.10 on a Acer Aspire 1810T. I can connect to the internet via both wifi and the Novatel U998 modem. I have a PPTP VPN that works correctly via wifi, but does not work via the modem. The obvious problem would be that the ISP is doing something... but I'm dual booting Windows 7, and the ISP's Windows based software is able to connect to the VPN without issue.
I'm running VMWare player to be able to access my required Windows apps, so I'm almost in a position to dump MS if I can get this VPN issue resolved.
