Ubuntu :: Install Gnome Nanny - After Writing Password It Does Not Shown Anything

May 14, 2010

I'm trying to install Gnome Nanny [url]

I installed it using Synaptic and when I restart, the Nanny daemon appears to be working.

However, when I try to access to the Parental Control (System - Administration - Parental Control) and after writing my password, it does not shown anything. Nor any windows not any configuration.

I am using Lucid Lynx I386.

Do you know any parental control which could block programs execution (like games, instant messengers, browsers...), could have web filtering and could have spending time control?

I have difficulty in running Gnome Nanny in Lubuntu 10.04. Installation is easy just by adding repository and do sudo apt-get install. But clicking on "Parental Control" resulting in nothing and I do not know how to change the setting for example, email only and no browing?

I think Gnome Nanny is user friendly and suit my purpose to stop user access to browser internet but email only through zimbra.

General :: SSH And Stop Password Being Shown In Clear Text?

Jan 6, 2011

I have a headless server running Centos and I often login in remotely to administer it. I have passwordless login and sometimes run commands remotely via ssh from a client machine. I've tried to shut the server remotely but have come across a small problem. Here is the output of the command I use to shutdown :Code:unclec@linux-desktop $ ssh centos 'sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now 'PASSWORD : 123ABCAs passwordless login is set up I do not need to enter a password to ssh BUT as I am running sudo on the server I am asked to enter my centos unclec password and this is shown in clear text on my local machine terminal. Is there a way to prevent this or should I edit the sudoers file on centos so it does not ask me to enter the password when "sudoing" ?

Debian :: Latin-1 Extended Characters Not Properly Shown In GNOME

Nov 13, 2010

I also noticed than when asking octave interpreter (ran from terminal) to display character range from 97 to 140 the output was:

On the other hand, when executing the same query in qtoctave the characters are displayed properly.

I've tried to change the font that the gnome terminal uses, to no benefit.

My default locale is en_us.utf8 and I am about to install every package that contains the prefix ttf

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Install - No Grub Shown On Bootup

May 4, 2011

Have just installed Ubuntu 11.04, the system is to dual boot with XP.Ubuntu is installed, have been into it and it seems to be working fine. However, when I bootup the computer I get no "Grub!" [Grub is now going to take over the boot process textual alert]. And, once the system gets past that screen, there is no list of Operating Systems to boot choices. Just boots straight into Ubuntu - always.

Solved that by installing 'Startup Manager' (which I knew about from slight previous exposure to Linux) and set the default operating system to Windows XP - this means that now I can't get into Ubuntu. How do I get Grub to show that 'Grub alert'? And how do I get Grub to offer choices of OS to boot in to?

OpenSUSE Install :: Geeko No Longer Shown At Boot?

Jan 16, 2011

I updated my GRUB config. I reordered some menu items and set openSUSE as default OS.When I boot into openSUSE, I am no longer greeted by Geeko when openSUSE is loading. I only see text from the boot procedure scroll by like it's still the 90s. While there's a certain coolness in seeing openSUSE switch to runlevel 5 and all that jazz, I want my chameleon back.A few weeks ago, I configured openSUSE to boot with flag vga=0x3ef so that it would boot with my preferred resolution immediately. This used to work fine. Since this morning, openSUSE crashes when X is attempting to start. I can still boot into openSUSE by removing that flag, but even then I still don't see the chameleon.

OpenSUSE Install :: Install Error - Config Defaults For GNOME For GNOME Power Manager Have Not Been Installed Correctly

Mar 4, 2010

Things were running fine until GNOME misbehaved;

GNOME failed to load telling me:

Install error, Configuration defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly.

So I

Code:

To the shell and check the logs in gdm and find this:

Could not ask power manager if user can suspend, launch helper exited with unknown return code 0.

So I try

Code:

To see if another user will get the desktop; I get the error

Cant create etc/passwd no space left on device.

So I

Code:

And get the following

I insert a usb drive to prepare for back up; Run

Code:

On the shell to get the usb device name; Then run

Code:

To mount the device.

I end up with:

Cant create lock file /etc/mtab~ 4610 No space left on device(use -n flag to override)

So, I

Code:

And see 9 partitionitions

Code:

Again to check which ones are loaded at boot up time and get

plus some other file systems mounted at boot up, but not mapping to any physical partitionition.

I try

Code:

On partition9 and get warnings because its mounted, so I chicken out and try

Code:

And run into the error:

cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4832 no space left on device (use -n flag to override)

Good thing is there is a

Code:

Since space is a problem, I

Code:

On partition6 which is not mounted at boot up time and try to

Code:

I still get the error

cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4735 no space left on device (use -n flag to override

Code:

For package update tells me

cant open /var/run/zypp.pid in mode w

Code:

For power management tells me its not even recognised as a command.

Fedora Installation :: Will 13 Allow To Install Grub In Its Own Partition Without Writing Over The MBR

May 23, 2010

My laptop came with a hidden partition for restoring Vista instead of an install disk. I installed Ubuntu 9.04, which had an "Advanced" option that allowed me to install grub in the Ubuntu partition without writing over the MBR. Then I used EasyBCD to add Ubuntu to the Vista boot loader. I wanted to do this so that I can still restore the factory copy of Vista from the hidden partition if I need to. I upgraded the Ubuntu to 9.10, still using grub. When I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 it went to grub2, and I haven't figured out how to boot into it with EasyBCD yet.But I would like to try Fedora anyway. I will wait a couple of days and get 13.

1. Which grub does Fedora 13 use?

2. Will Fedora 13 allow me to install grub in its own partition without writing over the MBR?
