I want to mount the old partitioned drive with all my data as a slave and then transfer to the new system. Have fiddled around with settings in fstab without the required result. As I remember, disk was partitioned with home, root and swap.
View 5 RepliesI got a sort of usb connected device(not an external enclosure) so i can connect a sata hard drive into a machine that only has ide connections but the drive is not mounting. I am not very good at mounting slave hard drives anyway ,,,,never been able to get one happening without help. I am wanting to read this drive as i killed another desktop machine(i think the mb) and i need the data off the hard drive. The drive is shown in a directory and in the media directory. Can't think of what else sorry as i am so tired from testing everything out of the machine that i killed.....
View 4 Replies View Relatedso i used to have my harddrive mounted in fstab, to /mnt/diskS. than i decided to change the permissions to 766 global i believe i read somewhere with chmod. anyways so after that i checked to see if it worked and to my dis believe all my files are gone. or just arnt showing, the space taken up hasnt decreased but i just cant see any of my files. so i decided to take the harddrive out of fstab and restart my computer. and after restart when i click on the folder the harddrive is mounted in it says permissions belong to 1000?

I have everything setup so that when the machine boots up it starts that logging process. The problem I am having is that sometimes (not always) ubuntu creates a directory with the same path that I expect my flash drive to mount to i.e., /media/data/ then my flash drive instead mounts to /media/data_/. I need to know the path of the flash drive so I can store my data on it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a bit of a problem in my new install of Lenny (5.0.1). The machine in question was running XP and has a C: drive (system) and two other had drives (ide) one with music on and the other with videos. All were NTFS naturally.
I installed Lenny and re partitioned the system drive accordingly with swap and root partitions, no problems there.
The next phase was to convert the other two drives to ext3. The music drive has been backed up so the plan was to re-partition that to ext3, copy the video files to it and then re partition the now ex video drive and restore the music files to that.
I ran Gparted and partitioned the old music drive to ext3 but could not then mount it, it didn't do this after formating. I did not have permissions to mount the drive.
I read on a forum how to mount the drive from Terminal, going to /mnt, mkdir VideoDrive, mount /dev/hdb1 VideoDrive and presto it was mounted. However I still did not have permissions to it and could therefore not create directories.
Right clicking on the drive and showing properties now showed owner as root ~ create and delete files, group as root ~ access files, others ~ access files. All of these drop-downs are unavailable for changing.
I went into users and groups. There were groups there called mike and root so I selected both root user and mike user as members of both of these groups. Nope.
In the drive properties I entered Mount Point as /mnt/VideoDrive, File System as ext3, and Mount Options as defaults,unmask=000 0 0. The other forum I read stated that unmask is used to allow access to all users.
I then transfered these options to the Volume properties, again no joy.
I have added entries into the fstab and mtab files still no joy.
I accidentally formatted a 2TB drive of mine (big oops), but have recovered 2 of the 3 partitions using testdisk. My third partition is a LUKS encrypted partition. Testdisk managed to recover a piece of it, but it won't mount as most of it is unallocated. The partition originally occupied all space from sector 2,930,272,065 to the end of the disk -- sector 3,907,024,064. That is about 473 GBs. Currently, the partition only uses space from sector 2,930,272,065 to 2,930,288,129, about 7.84 MB.
The rest of the space is unallocated. Now what I need to do, is to expand the partition so that it occupies all the space that it used to. How would I do this? I cannot resize the partition, cause it would try to recreate the filesystem AFAIK and I don't want that, as it will fry my data. My data is not terribly important, but I would rather have it then not. I attached a screenie of kpartitionmanager. The partition in question is /dev/sdb2.
I had a drive that kept kernel panic'ing so my data center recommended using the spare hard drive to reinstall OS on, and import the data from the old drive. (they checked the hardware, it wasn't the hardware) The new install is done, and I need to mount the old drive and get backups off it since my data center does not provide management whatsoever.
It's the same OS on both (Cent OS 5.4 32-bit) I'm an advanced user on windows, but linux gets me. I can ssh in, do basic stuff like setup IP ranges and restart services. I normally navigate the box through SFTP so I have a gui. WHM shows me my drives as such

so I'm assuming SDB is my old drive and the drive I need to access. I attempted to follow instructions on

but I'm assuming FreeBSD would work differently and I wasn't totally sure what the labels of the file systems should be.
Right so I reformated my windows partition to ext3. Now ubuntu tells me there is a problem with it when I start the system. It says it cand find it and asks me if I want to: s ignore this or m fix it manually. Well that or something quite similar. how I make it understan I don't have a windows partition any more?

However, my data drive is an NTFS partition filling a 3.6TB SATA raid.

I've got a LOT of valuable data on this drive, and nothing else big enough to store it.
Dropbox will not start properly because my Lucid installation is on a SS HD (/dev/sdc) but my data, including my Dropbox folder is on an internal NTFS-formatted HD (/dev/sda), and I also have another internal HD for backups (/dev/sdb).

I'm about to reformat the middle primary partition and would like to take this opportunity of trying Ubuntu using the middle primary partition.
I'm using GAG to switch from one partition to another.
Is there any reason why trying Ubuntu in the middle partition would cause problems.
I think I read that Ubuntu can mess up the MBR.

I use to have Karmic Koala on sda1, but something went wrong and I want to install it back on sda1. How would I do this without losing my data on sda3? When I use the live disc, it want to install it onto sda3. I cannot figure out how to install it only on sda1.
Also, when I stored data, I want to store it on the sda3 partition. I already have on that partition a /jason file which was my old Karmic Koala.
I am getting ready to install Ubuntu 9.04 on my Dell laptop, only because 10.04 won't work. I have the hard drive partitioned as C: and D: . I am keeping Windows on C: for a couple of applications that need it. I still have a few things on the D: drive. Do I need to have it completely clean and formatted? And, will Ubuntu ask where I want it to be installed or will it just take the largest contiguous space available? After the install, does the system automatically ask if I want Windows or Ubuntu or how do I tell it which system to bring up?

New gateway laptop with a 330M nvidia card and windows 7. I partitioned the drive and made a dual boot with the 64bit 10.04. Everything seemed to be running fine. I installed the recommended drivers for the nvidia card (and also ran an update). I rebooted. Now I get the same thing whether in recovery mode, normal boot or even to a liveCD, first ubuntu with the five dots (with an odd green halo around them) then a few screens flash by and then blackness.
None of the f keys do anything, nor does holding shift during the boot and ctrl+alt+anything does not have an affect except ctrl+alt+delete will shut down still. Once in my frustrated button bashing I did somehow get a stretched out window saying there seems to be some graphics problem, from there I did get to a somewhat normal looking desktop. I didn't to do anything then, foolishly thinking I could do it again in the future (for some presumably unrelated reason I could not get online = no updates and no Internet help) I haven't gotten back there since.
I regret to see the lack of facility for Guided install into the 'largest unpartitioned space on the drive'. I cannot find it either in the Desktop CD, or the Alternate CD. It seemed to disappear in Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop CD but did stay in the Alternate CD. But in 10.10 it seems to have gone completely.I found it a really *very* useful facility for myself, and also when helping others - when all I had to say to them was - 'delete the existing partition/s, do nothing more expect then, install using the facility 'Install into the largest unpartitioned space on the drive'.

Is it just a simple thing between bytes and bits like MS. Or is this an issue I can not ignore? I have 3 partitions. One is my swap, one is ext4(slackware is on) the last is a jfs partition.

Been a while since i mounted a slave and plain ubuntu seems to do it automatically so i forgot what commands i need to see it. Would love some help as the Musix forum is messed up. They have most of their forum in spanish and the parts that are english are not complete. I managed to sign up but that damn thing is really messed up. My issue is that ubuntu does not show my secondary slave seagate hdd .. it only shows and installs on my western digital master primary one. I need to have access to my slave drive because it has data on it which i wanna use.
My secondary slave shows up in my windows and bios just fine. So what gives?

Present system: X86 based (32 bit), using a P4, 1.8 GHz/400 MHz fsb, with 512mb of DDR RAM installed, can upgrade to 2 gigs total.Shuttle MV42 motherboard, including onboard video and sound (S3 Graphics ProSavage DDR P4M266/VIA 8751/8233 chipset, VIA AC'97 Audio Controller, 2.2 compliant)
If I should decide to use the available 160 gig drive as a dual boot system, in order to install both XP and some version of Linux, how should I set it up? How many partitions will XP and Linux need or work with best? How much space for each OS? What file systems? Should I format/partition it with the existing W2000 OS? What comes first, the chicken or the egg? (XP or Linux?) I have read somewhere that it matters which OS is installed first, due to boot records being overwritten by successive OS installs. I plan to keep W2000 on the first HDD at least until I move my files over to XP. Will I need to switch the master/slave designations after installing XP and Linux on the new drive, since I will want to boot from that drive?
