1) He is the admin, have sudo privilages and install, do all types of work, his username is abhilash
2) A user who is normally a IT administrator, who can just install or remove softwares, but cannot access files of abhilash.
I'm trying to do this and my head is going blank, The problem where i'm stuck is, if IT admin can install softwares, then he can become sudo as sudo su, then he can view my files

One of the feature in my application involve changing of hardware setting. This require the user to be root or have administrative right.Before my application enable that feature, I want it to check whether the user is "root" or not, or whether user use "sudo" command to run the application or not, or whether the user has administrative rights or not.What are the codes or library that can do this?
NOTE: Sometimes, advanced linux user may set the user id of root to something else other than 0. So, getuid() may not be helpful in this case.

Please bare with me because I think I am questioning such a basic question. How do you give sftp root privilege to user? I've made group "admin" and made 2 users under that group. Trying to upload a file onto a server using SFTP with one of the user and it fails and says "Permission denied."
I gave full sudo/root permission to the group "admin" from /usr/sbin/visudo I mainly use Tranmit4 but I also have filezilla. Or is there a way to run sudo command on either ftp client application?
How can you give total access to the system to a user other than root?
* Make the user a member of the root group.
* Change the UID of the user to 0.
* Add the user to the /etc/sudoers file.
I think none of these are correct answers.
First, I am new to linux I just finished installing Fedora 14 on a different PC which I will be using solely to explore Linux. However the first annoying problem I encountered was that I can't do a lot of things without Linux asking me for the root password. This has become really annoying, I want to stop fedora from asking for root authentication every time I want to explore something here and there.
Among the work-arounds that I've tried and didn't quite work for me are:
1. login as root on the kdm - I can login as root but because I am also encouraging my sister to explore fedora 14 she needs the same access as root too. We have our own preferences so we both need individual accounts that have same access level as root.
2. change userid to 0 (same as root) and modify groups to be exactly the same as root's groups - very bad solution, what it did was make my user a sort of "alias" for the root. It basically uses the same /root/ folder, same settings and all that stuff. Again, my sister and I need separate accounts for a more personal feel.
3. use terminal and go sudo, sudoers, etc - very bad idea, I want to explore using the kde gui. And again I want to eliminate the inconvenience of having to type things over and over again. I'd rather type the password over and over again than having to use terminal and sudo everything.
4. beesu, gksu - anyone knows how to make linux automatically wrap everything with beesu/gksu?
since we are just exploring, we are willing to trade the systems, integrity and security for the convenience of having freedom to explore everything in it. I don't care, it could blow up the pc for all I care (it's old and for experiment anyway).
This exploring linux of ours is a make or break for us to using linux. If there is no solution to this problem, we'll probably scrap the whole "migrate to linux" idea.
I thinking of making Linux recognize our user id the same way it recognizes uid 0 but I have no idea how to do this.

Is there a way, in Ubuntu, for a user account to be given the local rights assignment to act as part of the operating system and to function as a service in the background?
I wanted to create an user but don't allow it to see the other user's home folder so I made chmod 0750 /home/folder and it worked fine so I went ahead and decided to completely forbid access to the root folder and I had the "great" idea to make chmod 0750 /, and now I'm having problems with wine and other applications, in example I used to have a folder in this address 209.239.114.51/mmgr but now it's giving me errors and if I try to run some applications I got error "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal"

I wanted to give user A permission to see the bin direcory of my workspace, which is in the home directory of user B. I was wondering how can this be done? I gave the bin direcotry full read/execute premissions, but since it's in my home directory user A can't navigate to it.
I know there are a few ways I could get around the problem but they arn't very elegant. I was wondering if there is a simple method for giving a user access to a specific directory without giving access to all the parent directories. I tried symbolic link but user A still can't access it, and a hard link to a directory isn't allowed in Linux. I don't feel like making a hard link to every single file in the bin directory, and I'm not sure that would work anyways, since every recompile overwrites them.
When I insert some homemade DVDs of a friend, I can't view its contents. DVD works fine on windows XP, but not on opensuse. Dolphin gives an error: access denied to /media/071114_1638.I can't do a chown command because dvd is read-only...And when I do an ls -l I get:

I'm new to Ubuntu and wish to use the system in combination with Apache/mySQL/phpMyAdmin. I managed to get phpMyAdmin working for now. Also mySQL database seems to work. Only problem is Apache2. I can start the server and it is working. However in the folder /var/www/ where all site files are stored, I can not edit anything. I have been reading about sudo nautilus which did allow me to change administrator rights for the folder, but still I do not get it working to display other than the default index.html page. Is there a manual or quick solution for me so I can use apache with Ubuntu?

I think it started to happen after I issued
chmod +s /usr/bin/screen
chmod 755 /usr/bin/screen
which I believe is unrelated to this problem, and,
chmod -s /bin/su (-s by mistake)
chmod 755 /bin/su
which most probably made the whole mess...
this is not the part of the problem I believe but here's some background why I did that... when trying to make possible for screen sessions to be started automatically on boot under non-root account, I entered something like "su - username -c "/usr/bin/screen -dmS screenname ./executable-file"" in bootmisc.sh, but I was getting "must run suid root for multiuser support", so I tried to fix it, and now I can't login to root account no way.
I am trying to set up a simple home file-server for media and backups, using an old Atom board I had lying around and 1GB memory, so I don't want a full desktop. All goes well with installing server 10.10, using LVM for my data disk. However, I wanted some GUI tools since I am not familiar with the CLI, so I installed gdm, xorg, and gnome-core as suggested in some threads and forums.So far so good, it boots into the Gnome desktop, but I can't get sudo access with anything (synaptic, gkedit, etc.) - always "incorrect password". I am fine from the console; I reset my user password, no luck; I set up another admin user, and that also works in console but not the desktop.I have no idea where to go next and can't find anything that works in the forum

I've got a Centos server setup as a web server and have no problems doing anything from the command line. Some users need to connect via FTP, and need to be able to chmod files and directories as they please. I've been able to allow the users to connect to the web directory via FTP, but can't work out how to allow them the ability to chmod anything within the folder. The files were originally uploaded by root user, however I want any user connecting via FTP to be able to edit permissions as they please.

If I want to save a Module or something in a specified map, I get 'Errno 13', it says that I don't have permission to edit, do thing in that map. And this is also for importing files with Python. I logged in from Terminal with 'sudo -i' and closed Terminal, but the problem keeps repeating. How do I login as Admin or Root and stay as Admin or Root? I need right to edit/read files as well as root and normal user.

When I execute this, I get in the Python IDLE the 'Errno 13' problem and below the 'Errno 13' it says that I don't have permission. I'm having a bit of a problem after joining Ubuntu 9.04 to my company's Windows Domain. I can log in and use sudo just fine but I don't have access to certain things in my menu (i.e. "Add/Remove Software") and I can't open the User Manager. I manually edited the /etc/group file as root and added my username (username@domain) to the appropriate groups but still no luck.
