Ubuntu :: Screensaver/power Saver Odd Behavior?

Apr 2, 2010

I have a screensaver set to run after 10 minutes and then the screen is set to turn off after 30 minutes, but it seems that it never consistently stays off (after the 30 minutes), and very often turns back on and runs the screensaver instead. It seems to be in an endless cycle without me doing anything to wake it. Is there any way to fix this? It's killing my power usage. Karmic, core2duo, nvidia 7600GT gfx cards using latest nvidia drivers (but also happened on 190, and I think 185)

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Low Level Power Management Screen Saver Removal

May 28, 2010

I run V11.1 on a minimalised install on a stick with TWM, no KDE at all but I cant get rid of the screen shutdown after about 20 minutes. Also I have several other boxes with v11.1 with KDE and still cant get rid of these screen shut downs.I dont believe this is coming from the bios in these machines. they are all Intel D945 MBs with some sort of Nvidea cards.

My app normal runs with no user mouse or input and is pocessor intensive.I would like to retain the power shutdown and reboot capability from comand line.I realise its not as simple as pulling symlinks of of the init levels in the new complicated distros, but I was suprised the non kde twm install still shuts down the screen. So I want a low level level fix that will remove anything kicked off by init that will derate the system performance or turn off the screen.

Ubuntu :: Disabling Screensaver And Power Management In XFCE?

Jul 22, 2011

Because Ubuntu 11.04 is a bit heavy for the capabilities of my older desktop hardware, I am in the process of switching over to Xubuntu 11.04 going forward. I found the "sleep inhibit applet" very useful when I was using the Gnome DE, and was searching for a replacement in XFCE that doesn't require installing a bunch of Gnome libraries. I found a description of "caffeine" as a utility that seems to be what I'm looking for, but when I added the caffeine ppa to my repositories, and select it for installation in Synaptic, it wants to add a long list of Gnome-related components. Is there any quick way to temporarily disable the screensaver and power management functions in XCFE that doesn't depend on Gnome?

Fedora :: Screensaver/power Management Results In Logout?

Dec 22, 2010

I have searched for a solution to this issue (it's difficult to come up with a minimum number of search terms) and have found at least one person reporting it, but the solution is "check the xorg logfile" - which is entirely too vague, since I don't know what I'm looking for in the file. Here's the issue: The screensaver and/or power management appears to initiate a logout when I try to awaken the computer, whether the screensaver is still functioning or the screen has been turned off. Wither way, I jiggle the mouse, and it appears there is a crash (black screen with spinning mouse circle) resulting in a new login screen, which is entirely disruptive if I have software running, such as recording an audio stream with Audacity.

I'm using KDE with an OpenGL screensaver (antinspect) set to engage after 10 minutes. As for power settings, I am "letting powerdevil manage screen power saving." On the screen tab I have checked "Dim display when idle for more than [10] minutes." I have enabled display power management - standby after 20 minutes and power off after 30 minutes. (There are way too many options under KDE now, and I don't find an explanation of what the various "Profile Management" options do and what the tabs for "Actions" and "CPU and System" do differently from the "Screen" tab. I have an ATI 4650 video adapter. I'm not using a proprietary driver, since I've not been able to determine that there is one that will work with Fedora 14 (or any other Fedora, for that matter). The machine is a recent AMD (dual core 6000+) with 4Gb of memory.

Ubuntu :: Install WINE Screensaver In Gnome-screensaver Possible?

May 19, 2010

There's an OSS screensaver on windows that I love called PixelCity (links:blog post, github). it's pretty cool. and it runs fine on my Ubuntu (Karmic 9.10) with wine.Is there a way I can tell the gnome-screensaver about it so I can use it as one of my screensavers? I'm still fairly new to Gnome and the whole "screensavers as themes" thing is still confusing me.I've found my themesdir and tried to create a .desktop file for it, but obviously I've gotten something wrong as it just doesn't show when I open the screensaver prefs dialog, no error, no message, it's just not there.

Installing the xscreensaver packages added the extra screensavers I was missing, and I'm a pixelcity away from perfection..Of course the perfect solution would be if someone ported the screensaver natively to linux, which shouldn't be too hard as the source is open, it already runs on openGL and tries to confine most windows stuff to a single file. But I don't know C++ or 3D code or win/linux internals so I wouldn't know where to start..

Ubuntu :: Different NTFS Volume Behavior In 10.04?

May 17, 2010

Ubuntu 64 bit is installed on the hard disk with two partitions: one for Ubuntu, another is NTFS partition called Shared. Before upgrading to 10.04 Shared volume was available. To mount it, it was necessary to enter the password. After upgrading to 10.04, I see two volumes: Shared and Shared_. Places menu contains Shared item. When I click it, it opens without password, and shows /media/Shared_, with correct contents. Original Shared volume appears in the media directory:

Code:

root@alex-64:/media# ls -l
total 12
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 2010-04-21 19:49 cdrom -> cdrom0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2010-04-21 19:49 cdrom0
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 2010-05-09 08:25 Shared
drwx------ 1 alex alex 4096 2010-05-17 08:56 Shared_

Shared volume is empty. Can this be fixed? It is OK to work with Shared_ volume?

Ubuntu :: Odd Behavior In Lucid After Boot?

Jun 3, 2010

I upgraded to Lucid from Karmic a few weeks ago. The upgrade went fine. Then I decided to move my exit, maximize, and minimize buttons to the right side. I used Ubuntu Tweak to do this. Since that time I have very odd behavior after I boot Lucid. The booted system comes up with an X for a cursor. There are no exit, maximize, and minimize buttons on my window bar. Finally, I can open a terminal, but cannot type anything in it.Sometimes I can get things back to normal by using Ubuntu Tweak to move the buttons to the left or right (depending on where they were before the boot). Sometimes I have to open System>Preferences>Appearance> and change Visual Effects from None to Normal or vice versa.I have tried metacity --replace (after getting the terminal window to allow me to type in data), but after I reboot, things are back the way they were. I have an Nvidia GeForce 7300 LE on board graphics card, and I am using the Nvidia current version driver. When things are working correctly, System Monitor shows a compiz process running but not a metacity process. Is this correct?

Ubuntu :: Can't Disable Screen Saver

Jun 30, 2010

I have been having a problem with every Ubuntu version I have used where the screen blanks automatically after a few minutes when the computer is left alone.I have set all the settings in the system BIOS and power management settings to disable screen saving features. The screen saver options are set to the following: Pictures Folder, Idle after 2 hours, Activate when Idle unchecked.Require password is checked.

These are my settings, but in about 10 minutes of not being touched, each computer goes to a blank screen and I have to use my password to get back to the desktop.I originally installed Ubuntu 8.04.3 on my desktop, and I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on one of my laptop computers. I have sense upgraded the desktop to 9.10 and then to 10.04.I updated the first laptop to 10.04 and freshly installed 10.04 onto another laptop.I am having this same problem on all three computers and had the problem on each computer from the beginning.I ran update manager today about an hour ago and have not tested this problem, but I expect it is still there. I created a document with nothing but the time and left it on the laptop. I will see how long it takes for the screen blanker to activate.I searched the forum and found two unrelated problems, one of which was the opposite, someone who could not get the screen saver to activate.

Both are set to hit at thirty minutes but have not hit in almost a day. I thought the mouse might be moving slowly or something butunplugged it and let it sit for almost an hour and nothing.
