I recently read that windows 7 has come with a special "power saver" mode which will ensure your computer does not take up any more electricity than you needed ( Control panel -> system -> security -> Power options & select power saver power plan) , Does ubuntu have this feature ?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a screensaver set to run after 10 minutes and then the screen is set to turn off after 30 minutes, but it seems that it never consistently stays off (after the 30 minutes), and very often turns back on and runs the screensaver instead. It seems to be in an endless cycle without me doing anything to wake it. Is there any way to fix this? It's killing my power usage. Karmic, core2duo, nvidia 7600GT gfx cards using latest nvidia drivers (but also happened on 190, and I think 185)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a computer(Fedora 12 Kde4) playing flash,but the screen will get into sleep mode after a few minutes.But it will not sleep when it plays movies.So I want to know: is there any way to active the screen every few minutes so that the screen will not get into sleep ? It is a remote computer ,all I can do is to send cron job to it ,no SSH. So commands is the best way,but please do not interrupt the flash ? I run this command "xrefresh" to refresh the screen ,but the screen still sleeps.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using ubuntu 10.04. Over the last couple of days, I am having a weird problem: once the machine gets into screen saver, it is impossible to get it "out".
I see the mouse cursor move as I move it, but the login popup (with user / password) does not show up.
For the time being, I have no choice but to restart the computer in order to be able to resume work.
I run V11.1 on a minimalised install on a stick with TWM, no KDE at all but I cant get rid of the screen shutdown after about 20 minutes. Also I have several other boxes with v11.1 with KDE and still cant get rid of these screen shut downs.I dont believe this is coming from the bios in these machines. they are all Intel D945 MBs with some sort of Nvidea cards.
My app normal runs with no user mouse or input and is pocessor intensive.I would like to retain the power shutdown and reboot capability from comand line.I realise its not as simple as pulling symlinks of of the init levels in the new complicated distros, but I was suprised the non kde twm install still shuts down the screen.So I want a low level level fix that will remove anything kicked off by init that will derate the system performance or turn off the screen.
I have recently loaded Ubuntu 9.10 which runs perfectly, except for the power management system.I go into the GUI power management screen and tell it to use the screen-saver after ten minutes, but NEVER suspend/ hibernate but it suspends/hibernates anyway,sometimes after an hour, sometimes hours later.Is it possible to keep the screen-saver but disable the rest of the power management system?

The value could then be periodicaly tested within a "cron" script. If screen saver was running then a "skill" could then be called to force a complete logout releasing the terminal for another student.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy power just flicked off then back on and when my desktop booted back up and I ran startx it loads xwindows into screensaver mode and it's all jacked up, I can't get out of it, no way to log out of xwindows either, only way to shut it down is by killing the processes so how do I clear all xwindows cache or what not so this will stop happening because of right now im locked out of xwindows.

I have looked at the detailed settings and power performance management but nothing there.... I am in fact in "don't do anything" mode (power management) but this does not seem to do much.
I'm on 10.10 64 bit. I have my power management settings configured so that on AC power, after 0:30 the screen is supposed to go to sleep.
But the problem is that it never goes to sleep. The screen saver comes on after 10 minutes, as scheduled, but when I come back even after a long period of time, the screen hasn't gone to sleep (it hasn't gone into low-power mode).
Please let me know what specific config information I should provide to help debug this and I'll post it here.
So the power went out at my house recently, and my home theater PC seems to have taken a blow. We had it on a surge protector, which didn't blow so that's fine, but it keeps telling me its in low graphics mode, and I can't seem to fix it for the life of me. I could reinstall ubuntu, but I have a bunch of movies and music on that drive that I want to keep.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhatever settings I use in the power manager, (Ubuntu default Gnome Power Manager) nothing appears to change. Screen brightness does not change when moving the slider, but is reduced after 5 or 10 minutes (haven't timed it. Probably whatever is default) of inactivity, even though the reduce screen brightness checkbox is unchecked. The latter is pretty annoying when watching online TV streams, especially since the video also exits full screen mode when the screen brightness is reduced.
The weird thing is, as the title implies, that when booting in recovery mode with FailsafeX the power settings seems to work. At least the screen brightness varies as the slider is moved I should probably mention that it is possible even in normal mode to adjust the screen brightness by using the buttons for adjusting screen brightness on my laptop (Fn + arrow up/down)
I work on Ubuntu 9.04 and our application requirement is not to go to power saving mode when application is running. I added ServerFlags section to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I see that it works fine only if I change settings via Settings>ScreenSaver>Power Management in gnome. I wan to do this via script. Can I do this? Which file gets updated when I change display settings via Settings>ScreenSaver>Power Management.
All of a sudden today there was no display on my Ubuntu PC. It seems to be powering on - I get the LG screen when the monitor is switched on - but it goes into "Power Saving Mode". How do I diagnose this? I already unplugged and plugged. Monitor is connected to a graphics card - no change when I switched to VGA.

If my power cord is disconnected (i.e. if I'm running off battery power) then the login window locks up. Conversely, if the power cord _is_ connected then things work as usually. (Also, trying to adjust brightness causes a crash --- but I suspect that this is not odd). Where I should put this information.

I read something about it being the video card, so I took my old one out which it being an ati, an replaced it with an nvidia.
I recently converted a Toshiba Satellite A75 notebook with a broken screen into a minecraft server that me and my friends will be using at UAB. It's currently running the latest version of Debian in text-mode with a few shell scripts that backup files and update a webpage at specified times.
The server runs fantastic ( though it's currently on my home network so no one can join it unless they are on LAN ) but there is a minor problem. I took a look at the backups from last night and it seems the server shut down around 10:00 in the morning because the laptop went into sleep/hibernate mode or something like that. I'm not sure what's causing this exactly but I think it's some setting in gnome-power-manager, but I can't run it in text mode.
I have to questions: I am new with Linux and using ubuntu on my laptop computer. when i reopen my leptops cover after i closed it, meaning - putting computer to sleep, every thing is working, but the screen is black and nothing is seen. No matter what i tried to do, i cant make it to "wake up".
Using the computers battery, with no electric supply, the battery time is only half of what i get when using windows. i tried using less lumination but it didnt seem to help.
when my monitor turns off after 30 minutes, I cannot do anything after. We're talking complete lock down of Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit. Not even alt+printscreen+REISUB reboots the machine; I have to do a hard reboot (which sucks and is hard on hardware).
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running a version of Ubuntu 10.4 with XFCE loaded (actually Qimo, a distribution for kids). I am using a pci wireless card with a broadcom 43XX chipset and WPA2 authentication using the Broadcom STA driver. In an account with privileges I set the auto eth1 (which is what my wireless card comes up as) to connect automatically, and make available to other users.
When I switch to the kid's account, the wireless connects just fine. Then, if the computer is not used for a period of time, the powersavings mode kicks in. When the computer is woken up, the wireless connection does not attempt to reconnect. If you right click on the networking icon it doesn't even show any available connections, even though it can be found by clicking edit connections. The only way I can get it to reconnect is to restart the machine (I will admit that I did not try to restart the networking service, I will try that tonight).
Any ideas? This has been driving me nuts for a few days now. The users during the day are non technical and can't deal with these kind of issues. I can post more details about the setup (as recommended by the sticky post) tonight. I am at work at the moment and can't get to the machine from here - because it has removed itself from the network again.
I've recently changed to Debian from Windows, it's a really great adventure so far, but I have one problem. So as I see you can set your monitor into "Blank Page" after 10 or any minutes to save power, like in Windows. 10 minutes passes, without any movement my monitor's led turns into orange and the monitor turns off, that's great, that's what i want.
But after a few seconds the led turns green (like when it's on), and it brings up a little box : "Power Saving Mode" (just like it did after 10 minutes), and it turns off, and then stars again from the beginning . And this goes on repeatedly until a move my mouse to get back from "Blank page" state. (It's like the monitor tries going into power saving mode, but it gets always a little bit of power, to show that text box, and start all over.) So what can I do? I use debian 8.0 "jessie", and my monitor is a LG L1750S(with Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT).
I have a Dell Precision T3400 workstation (Nvidia Quadro NVS 290) with the kmod Nvidia driver installed. Everything works fantastic for power saving, the screen saver comes on , then the monitor blanks after a while. The only problem is that the monitor itself (Dell E228WFP) never goes into standby. The power LED stays green instead of orange. Worked fine under FC8, only noticed it recently under FC10.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit and I purchased a new ALFA AWUS036H wireless card. I would like to know if this "1Watt" wireless card is configured for full power. iwlist wlan0 txpower results:
wlan0 unknown transmit-power information. Current Tx-Power=27 dBm (501 mW). It appears to me that I should be able to increase the power. "iwpriv wlan0 highpower 1" does not work. Do I need to patch the new default driver that comes with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit with the aircrack one following these directions:[URL]...? Monitor mode and a injection tests seem to work fine with the driver I have installed.
I use Squeeze with Xfce. My problem is that recently (after the xfce updates) the xfce power manager doesnt react to the power button - it is set to suspend. I dont have gnome-power manager or anything like it running.
If i reboot the computer, the power button will work but if i suspend and resume, it doesnt work again.
The computer is built on an Asus M3N78-VM mobo (2GB RAM/Athlon3200+ single core).
acpi_listen detects the button press.
Any thoughts?
I'm looking for any power monitoring devices for Linux to allow monitoring power quality, voltage changes, and outages. This would be for North American three phase power system. I want to have this data fed live to my own program. It should be something much better than just jury-rigging a circuit to fee the power waveform into 2 or 3 audio cards.
