Ubuntu :: ATI Radeon HD 4350 Blurry With Fglrx Drivers

I installed the fglrx drivers in Ubuntu Natty for a ATI Radeon HD 4350 graphics card. Although compiz seems to work better, everything seems to be a blurry as compared to the generic graphics or while under Windows 7.For example, every other line displayed here while I type is more blurry than the others.I have a dual screen setup.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: ATI EAH4350 (Radeon 4350) Mouse Trapped And Keyboard Locked In Dual Head?

May 9, 2010

I have successfully installed an ATI EAH4350 (Radeon 4350) to work as a dual head in Ubuntu 10.04 but there is a bug though, which I noticed given the following scenario:

* Dual Head config (Multi-desktop)
* Monitor 1
- Running firefox and terminal
* Monitor 2
- Running WinXP in Virtual Box 3.1.6
- Virtual Box is in full screen mode
- WinXP is showing a flash movie using firefox also full screen mode
* Monitor 2 is configured above Monitor 1.

Sometimes the mouse gets trapped at the top of Monitor 1 (in between the two monitors). Keyboard doesn't function as well but the currently running apps continue to operate "normally". Ctrl + Alt + Fx doesn't work.

What is frustrating is when it happens it's beyond my control. I can't do anything else besides reset the PC.

General :: Migrating To 64bit Quad Core System

Mar 11, 2010

In the past, I've deployed new 64 bit systems and I've worked on and developed on 64 bit systems. But until a week ago, my workstation was a 32 bit system. Now, it is a 64 bit quad core Phenom II system, and I suppose I need to start the migration to 64 bit Linux. I do not want to blow off my system and rebuild it. This particular system dates back a decade and through many many updates. There is some digital debris in it, but there is also a fair amount of customization that I have implemented either for my own purposes or for customers, and to lose that customization would represent a headache for me.

What I want to do is install a 64 bit system over top of the 32 bit system. It is my hope that doing this would install the necessary 64 bit libraries, while not impacting the existing 32 bit libraries (except with some possible symlink problems). I then, hopefully, could boot into a 64 bit kernel while still running 32 bit programs. Is this feasible? My backup system is comprehensive; I COULD just try it and back up if my system became hosed. But I'd rather not; I have a lot of work to do and I'd rather not learn by doing in this case.

CentOS 5 :: VMware Server Only Detects 1 Of 2 Quad Core CPU?

Jan 22, 2010

Sadly, I google'd the heck out of this and even the vmware community has no answers. So, I decided to turn to the experts and see if you can provide a better solution than [URL]. The system sees both CPU's and all of the cores (cat /proc/cpuinfo). I have tried with HT and without HT (I never run HT anymore; seems to hurt performance in my workloads). I've tried the recent and newest kernels for CentOS 5.4 and still have no luck. There seems to be lots of people having this issue, but no real solutions.

Fedora Hardware :: I7-640M Dual Core Recognized As Quad?

May 27, 2011

I installed Fedora 15 on my relatively new Laptop machine and stumbled upon an odd thing:Even though my CPU is an Intel i7-640M dual core (2x 2.8 Ghz) it somehow seems to be recognized as a quad. System monitor shows 4 CPUs (all of the used to some extend) and even "cat /proc/cpuinfo" gives me 4 processors:

Code:

processor: 0
vendor_id: GenuineIntel
cpu family: 6

[code]...

At the same time the system (while relatively stable) is incredibly slow when it comes to complicated calculations (I do neuron simulations on a custom C++ framework).

CentOS 5 Hardware :: No Throttling Scalling Speedstep On Xeon Quad-Core

Jun 30, 2009

System recognizes that CPU is capable of throttling, but there is no module to govern it. So Xeon always runs at full frequency.This is not convenient as my server is not always in full use, so I would like it to lower power consumption, especially for AC, with frequency scaling enabled.Can you help me is this some bug, misconfiguration in default kernel or guys who writes kernel think that scaling is not necessary for servers processors?

From my analysis so far, I think that the issue lies with the fact that module acpi-cpufreq does not support Xeons and that there is no dedicated module for this processor family (e.g. p4-clockmod) module in the default kernel.

Ubuntu :: Migrating Quad-boot Setup - Console Screen Doesn't Even Clear

Mar 13, 2010

I know that these forums aren't M$ support forums, but any mention of Linux and open source there just ends up in "don't use Linux"-type replies, so i figured i should ask it here. I have a quad-boot setup (Win7x64-Win7x64-K9.10x64-K9.10x64). I am in the process of migrating this setup to another (bigger) HDD. The Win7 system partitions were cloned using 3rd paty imaging software, Linux system partitions were cloned directly (cat /dev/sda5 > /dev/sdb5), data partitions were freshly created and populated with files copied from old partitions.

As the hard drive is bigger than previous one, i decided to add a little more space to Win7 system partitions. So when creating new partitions, i left 5GB unallocated space between them in order to grow the partitions later. I cloned the new partitions, ran the chkdsk with all options on to make sure the resulting partition survived the migration, then checked if it is readable under Linux (it was), used KPartitioner to grow the partition to the new size, again booted into Win7 Recovery, ran chkdsk with all options on, removed bootloader and made a new one using bcdboot.

Now, my Linuxes boot OK (there was some wankery involved but nothing too serious), but neither of my two Win7 can. I checked the bootloader, fiddled with different settings (e.g. removed setting the root by UUID), even tried to manually boot it from commandline - to no avail. After "chainloader +1" and "boot" it just does nothing. No error messages, nothing at all - the console screen doesn't even clear.

Ubuntu Servers :: Deleting Files That Meet Certain Criteria?

Jun 21, 2011

I'm here of course because I would like to know what would be the SSH command to issue if I need to delete certain files that meet certain criteria. For instance, in this case, I simply have files that almost bear the same name but still have some very minor differences.

Let me give you an example:
L0619000.log
L0619001.log
L0619002.log
L0619003.log
L0619004.log

Those in bold are those I'd like to have removed, while the "L0619004.log" is obviously to be left intact.

Debian Hardware :: X Doesn't Start With Radeon 9200

Mar 11, 2011

I changed my graphics card from Nvidia GeForce 2 MX200 (drivers I used were nouveau) to ATI Radeon 9200SE (now drivers should be radeon). Unfortunately I couldn't get X to start. It leaves me to black screen with white cursor blinking. Both cards are AGP on old Slot 1 motherboard. Reason for change was that GeForce didn't support interlacing on VGA. There are no updates installed to Debian (Squeeze), because there is no internet connection on this computer currently. I tried few things but they didn't work:

* I tried to reconfigure xserver-xorg, didn't help
* I tried to make xorg.conf with X -configure and then moved it to correct place, didn't help
* I tried radeon.modeset=0 option, but it didn't help, I had some other problems with this but I think it's not important (I'll tell later if needed)

I tested Fedora 15 Alpha XFCE LiveCD, but it didn't boot because of my CPU I guess (VIA C3 1 GHz, Nehalem core). I also tested Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD, but it told that there was an error with radeon and low graphics mode is needed or something like that. So it was as bad as Debian. I took few logs and stuff to pastebin.

Xorg.0.log
dmesg

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rs880 Audio Device[Radeon HD 4200] Doesn't Work

Dec 27, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu on my HP Pavilion dv4-2012br and am really enjoying it, except that it is conflicting with my sound card. The only way I can hear some sound is going into System> Preferences> Sound> Output and selecting "Internal analog stereo audio" which makes the sound hollow and not at all pleasant to listen to music. When I mark "RS880 audio device [Radeon HD 4200] Digital Stereo (HDMI)" the sound is not played.

I followed step by step these instructions: [URL] yet the only way to run the audio through the "Internal analog stereo audio. "

Just adding: I used the "Install with Synaptic Package Manager" way to do it. And i'm using a desktop version of Ubuntu.

Here are some screenshots:

Fedora Installation :: Grub Boot Loader Doesn't Work For Core 12 And WinXP?

Jun 7, 2010

I have an HP Pavilion m7480n PC with Windows XP installed on the C-drive. I successfully installed FC 12 onto the spare USB drive. When I rebooted the PC all I got was a blinking underscore at the extreme upper left position of a totally black screen. After a bit of experimenting I found that if I hit the F1 key during the boot process, go into the BIOS setup, do nothing within the setup, and press ESC to get out of the setup then the PC will go back into the boot cycle a second time. During the second time however a small text message appears with words to the effect "Press any key to enter GRUB..." after which the GRUB splash screen comes up with the choice for FC 12 or "Other" (referring to Win XP). At that point I can boot into either one.
