Software :: Netbook - Will It Include Copying All The Grub Menu Stuff That Starts Up When First Bootup

Jan 15, 2011

Now that I have my Netbook up and running again and all my settings in, what is the best way of doing things so I don't have to keep installing and setting things up? I have a 255 Gig Partition on an external HD. how to do it so it copies ALL of my setup onto that Partition. Do I do a Copy, Backup or Image? What is the best program to use? So all I have to do is copy ALL the directories and files from that partition to the Netbook and then reboot. Will it include copying all the Grub menu stuff that starts up when you first boot up?

Ubuntu Installation :: No "side By Side" Option In Netbook Edition?

Sep 26, 2010

After successful (dual-boot) installation of Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop and laptop, I wanted to do the same for my netbook. I downloaded the Ubuntu Netbook edition [URL], and doing the same as before I wanted to select the " install them side by side" option. But in the installation menu (which is not the same as on screenshots on the [URL] where they use the screenshots from desktop edition) there is no such option. Is that only possible with the desktop distribution?

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - No Side Panel Buttons In Regular Mode

May 8, 2011

I installed 11.04 64 bit on my Acer Extensa 4420 the other day. It was running 10.04 32bit before. When it booted up the first time it said that it had some video issue and would boot in classic mode. I rebooted and selected the regular Ubuntu and it came up with the side panel buttons. This morning it boots into classic mode and I can't seem to get it back to the regular mode with the side panel buttons! What could be wrong with video settings? When I first ran 11.04 live it came up with the side panel and didn't ask to install any video drivers.

Ubuntu :: Can't Remove Plams-netbook From Kubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10?

Mar 7, 2010

For the past 2hrs I have been struggling to make KDE launch plasma-dekstop instead of plasma-netbook, but all in vain.I removed, then purged plasma-netbook and plasma-netbook-default-settings packages but after logging out and re-logging in the Netbook UI was back! After restarting the system now I can't even seem to get the KDM. I am greeted with a black screen.--- I restarted the system again and the nasty little bugger is back again! This is so frustrating. How do I get plasma-desktop to load instead?---- Great now I can see that plasma-desktop and plasma-netbook both are running simultaneously! netbook on top of desktop. So my final Q is how do I stop plasma-netbook from loading?

Ubuntu :: SPM / UM Trying To Remove Important Stuff During Upgrades

Aug 25, 2010

(SYN=Synaptic Package Manager; UM=Update Manager)
Some reason recently the Update Manager has been saying it can only do partial upgrades, then it asks if I want to confirm the things, I look at them, they have a few set to upgrade, it also says it will remove certain packages that pretty much would render my computer useless.

Here's a screenshot of the box I took just a few seconds ago when I went to "Mark All Upgrades" in Synaptic Package Manager. You can see that wanting to remove important things like "ubuntu-desktop" and "network-manager". [URL]

I mean, I would love to upgrade my WebcamStudio etc to check out the newer version, but I'm not gonna upgrade it if I can't even access it! I'm planning on going back and manually checking the ones shown for upgrade after I get done posting this, and seeing if it might be a certain package.

Ubuntu :: Add Different Items To My Side Menu Bar

Apr 4, 2011

I don't like Windows 7 Starter, nor Microsoft. I'm in the process of ditching them for Ubuntu. I'm trying, I really am. I've successfully installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition, and I'm now stuck. How the hell do I use this? I can't figure out how to add different items to my side menu bar. I can't figure out which version of Ubuntu I have. The documentation page says, "To check which version of Ubuntu you are running, click System -> About Ubuntu. The first line of the page that loads will tell you the version number, for example Ubuntu 10.04 LTS." I DON'T EVEN HAVE A "SYSTEM" BUTTON! How am I supposed to use this clumsy OS? I can't find any sort of "beginner's guide" or help like that on the internet.

Ubuntu :: Can't See Left Side Of Grub Menu?

I noticed it after booting a Linux Mint-10- live usb, and had to do a hard reboot. My grub resolution has always been 640x480. after booting to the live usb & hard reboot(rseiub didn't work), the menu is shifted to the left and I can't see the left side of it anymore. About 1" of the words are not showing.I've changed the resolution to 800x600 and I can see it now, but wonder why it happened and how to get it back the way it was. Not sure what else may have been affected.

Ubuntu Installation :: Replacing Netbook Remix With Regular Ubuntu

Apr 29, 2010

I originally installed UNR 9.10 on my Asus EeePC 1005HA in november and after significant fiddling with fiddly bits and messing about with the terminal and gconf-editor got rid of the dreadful netbook launcher interface (which is, perversely, especially impractical for netbooks). Now that I've updated to 10.04, the netbook launcher is back. I can get it away by logging into GNOME instead of Netbook Edition but the panel is still misbehaving. And even if I get everything to behave normally, I figure I may be in the same situation next time I update. So all things considered, I think I should probably just install regular Ubuntu and get it over with.

Can I install regular non-netbook edition from a USB-stick? (Since the EeePC has no optical drive and my external CD reader/burner is ancient and very slow)Can I install Ubuntu 10.04 over my UNE 10.04 without formating the HD thereby losing all my files (and having to reinstall all my apps)?

Ubuntu :: Remove Side Bar And Display Tabs Without Grouping

Jul 12, 2011

The GUI design of Ubuntu 11.04 really drives me nuts. It was completely silly and nonsense, especially the auto-hide feature. For instance, whenever I open Gvim, the toolbar is automatically hidden, I'm like wth, I need "this bar". Another annoying this is I can't keep track of which tab that I'm currently working on, they grouped all together on the left hand side, and the size of these icons are ridiculously huge. How could I change it back to the bottom and keep each tab separate from each other?

Ubuntu :: No Boot Menu On Netbook

Jan 3, 2010

I currently have an Acer Aspire One D250 netbook with Windows 7 Starter Edition, and I've decided to load Ubuntu 9.10 on it.

I put Ubuntu on my JumpDrive using this , and then began following the instructions from here, and I got to the part where it wanted me to enter my Boot Menu by holding F2 to enter setup... but it sent me straight to a menu that only allowed me to boot from Windows 7 or to run a Windows Memory System Diagnostic. Advanced options by pressing F8 only allowed me to change how Windows 7 started, but no where in the setup does it allow me to enter the boot menu and tell it to boot from my jump drive.

I'm not sure if it's a limitation on my model, the OS, or if I'm am missing something obvious. I've beaten Google to death, but the only thing I have gotten from there are topics on people trying to boot from XP versus Windows 7 on a duel partitioned hard drive, or people who's laptops won't start up at all.

I also tried running the "Help Boot from CD" that came on the jumpdrive, but it said there was a system error and that it could not install properly.

Ubuntu :: Remove Netbook 10.04 And Back To Original

Sep 7, 2010

I had download ubuntu netbook 10.04 version and use it from booting by USB key. I found it quite useful from USB and eventually installed it on my Gateway netbook, that's where my nightmare started. At installation option gave me to ubuntu side by side with my Windows Vista on the netbook. It used part of hard drive space to create a separate partition for ubuntu. Intallation is OK but display is very bad particular moving the mouse around Firefox. Screen turned white back ground right with messy character font. It tried move around and have to restart ubuntu to get out.

I thought it might be something display drive not setup but found no option to make change from within Ubuntu. I had frustrated to search for fixing option and decide to "remove" ubuntu from the netbook. The worst, there is no option whatsoever on how to remove it. I search this forum and script to delete the partition from terminal. When it restart, the MBR or Grun loaded with errors incorrect file system. That mean the MBR not load and it is a netbook. It does not come with Vista CD for me to fix MBR nor resize the partition. I had to re-install ubuntu again back to square one to use it size by size with Windows.

Any one have a clean and details steps on how to remove ubuntu, resize partition and able to bring the netbook back to Windows only?

Ubuntu :: Skip Startup Menu In Netbook 2d

May 21, 2011

I'm running maverick netbook remix on an asus1015pe eeepc. I recently switched from the unity interface to "ubuntu netbook 2d" - the one they say resembles the 10.04 netbook interface. I really like it - fast, crisp, and intuitive - but there's one thing I'd like to change, if possible. Right after login, there's a full-screen translucent menu that covers the 1st workspace. If I wait a few seconds, I can make it go away by clicking the "desktop" button in the bottom left, but is there any way to make it so it doesn't appear at all? so that after login it goes right to a clean desktop.
