May 7, 2011yesterday I ordered some software on the Net.Early this morning, I got a call from my bank someone else tried to charge to my debit card.I called the company I ordered from to alert them and they assured me it had to be my computer security because theirs was checked, upgraded regularly and above reproach.Fortunately, the bank caught it in time and my account wasn't debited. After I assured them I didn't order anything from Bed, Bath and Beyond, the bank shut down my card and I had to apply for another.
I was shocked. You hear about it but never imagine it will happen to you. I began to wonder and worry if it was because I was using Linux and it wasn't as secure as Microsoft.I'm isolated in a very small town in West Texas so I order some things on the Net.I loaded the full version of Ubuntu "Lucid Lynx" 10.04 from a 4 disk set and downloaded all the upgrades; almost five hundred and set everything up the way I wanted. My question is: Are there programs running among the Ubuntu build to assure a secure transaction on the net or do I have to load others and a fire wall like Windows? That's one of the reasons I left Microsoft behind was the "Auntie-viral" programs took over and almost became a competing system.

Dec 10, 2010I'm launching screen with the following command, inside a shell script that is set as a user's shell to keep them from escaping.
screen -dRRq -S ${USER}_MC -s $HOME/runthis.sh
Is there a way to secure screen, to keep the user from being able to even use the escape sequence, or at worst, prevent them from running commands like exec?
Edit: It's not that the user should have access to an actual command-prompt shell. I only want them to be able to run a single program that runs persistently, and as far as I know screen is the easiest way to do that. However, getting out of this is as easy as C-a : exec bash.
Right now I've just unbound most of the keys using .screenrc (especially colon), I just want to make sure I'm not missing something easier.

Dec 1, 2010I'm an Oracle DBA and started working for my current employer about 4 months ago. This past weekend an alert re: FS space brought my attention to /var/spool/clientmqueue (full of mail re: cron jobs) and the fact that sendmail is not running on our Linux servers.I'm told that the IT security team deemed sendmail too vulnerable so we don't run it.Aside from FS filling up and missing notification of issues with crontab entries, I'm concerned that we may be missing notification of potential issues. In other Unix/Linux environments I've seen emails from the print daemon when it experienced problems with specific jobs.
Are there other Linux facilities aside from cron and lpd that use email to advise the users of possible issues? Are there ways to secure sendmail or secure alternatives to sendmail? My primary need/desire is to make sure that emails regarding issues on the server get to the appropriate users. Secondary goal would be to have the ability to use mailx to send mail out. There is No need/desire to receive mail from outside.
Ubuntu :: Bare Metal Virtualization For Desktop?
Jul 22, 2011I would like to try putting some kind of free "bare metal" visualization for desktop useage on my laptop. I've been googling about the possibilities, but still I'm not sure which would actually work in my case. I've seen VMWare ESXi which looks ok, but unfortunatelly it is meant for servers and I can't have ESXI and Sphere client on same laptop. Another candidate I found is KVM, but as much I've seen it requires VTx VTd support from hardware, which my laptop can't provide. The same requirements must be met for Citrix Xen Client, which is meant for desktop virtualizations, but because of lack of VTx and VTd, can't be used in my case. Is there any other possibility? Currently I'm using VirtualBox and VMWare player for virtualization purposes, but I would like to pull out more performance out of it, and a heavy OS on top of another heavy OS just isn't the best way.

Aug 29, 2014I appear to have the exact problem that is currently listed in the 7.6 errata about EFI boot and black screen while trying to install ("Potential issues with UEFI booting on amd64"). The problem is that their workaround is not an option for me. This is a new rig and the motherboard doesn't appear to have any kind of ability to disable secure boot. I also don't know if my problem is exactly what they're thinking when it comes to that entry.
I'm able to get to the Grub install screen where you have the option to install Debian but when I select an option (any option) the screen turns off, back on but is black. All activity in the system stops after a few seconds (3-5 seconds) and that's it, she's done. I've tried all the options to try and disable secure boot but the options listed below are as close as I can get (and apparently should be sufficient).
The CD ISO used was the 7.6 netinst CD. I've also tried the Jessie ISO (Testing) that was downloaded about 2 hours ago. Same results. Unlike the errata which says "intermittent booting problems", my issue is consistently reproduced with no other result no matter what I do.
The rig:
-Asus H97-Plus running revision 2202
-Intel i5-4570
-32GB DDR3-1600
-128GB SSD Drive
-No external video card - using on board only but have tried both VGA and HDMI ports with the same result.
BIOS settings (is it still called BIOS or is it UEFI now?)
-Fast Boot: Disabled
-Launch CSM: Enabled
-Boot Device Control: "Legacy OPROM Only" or "UEFI and Legacy OPROM" (tried both)
-Secure Boot State: Enabled (it's grayed out and I'm unable to change this)
-OS Type: Other OS (supposedly makes it so you can boot non-Windows OS)

The obvious suggestions I've tried:
-tried USB boot & CD boot - same result
-tried altering the grub script to add the ACPI options - no effect

Oct 15, 2010I had a debian installation with kernel 2.6.32 I had a set of instructions to apply a patch to kernel which I followed to the T. The grub now shows the Debian installation with the old kernel and the Debian installation with the patched kernel.
The trouble is the system goes blank after attempting to start gdm3.
I have tried running in recovery mode and then typing startx but it only shows a blank screen.

Both have hardware RAID (Adaptec) set to RAID10, identical hard drives, etc. The RHEL/Zimbra machine is set up with LVM2. Is it possible for me to hook them up on the secondary NICs and boot the second machine with Knoppix or something else, and easily tell it to duplicate the first machine onto the second, down to the last bit, or do I need to make all the partitions beforehand and dd each one separately?

Mar 12, 2011I'm running a x86-based Debian Squeeze LAMP server which is also my gateway between my home network and the big wide world (Shorewall/Shorewall6) As you can guess, when (as it did just recently) the hardware dies and needs to be replaced, the rebuild of a machine which has been tuned and tweaked over years is "interesting", to say the least. I am looking for some software which will allow me to do a bare-metal restore of the software and setups (data is accommodated already, so that part can be ignored) I'd like to use something to create a boot disc (CD/DVD) that I can put in a new machine and get my original setup installed on the new tin automatically.
I looked at Mondo, it looks ideal, but Google hints at problems with GRUB, and incompatibilities with Debian Squeeze....so the questions are:
1) Has anyone run Mondo on Debian Squeeze successfully?
2) Is there a good howto for Mondo on Debian?
3) Is there an alternative that runs on Debian and that fits my requirements?

May 25, 2011I finished making a custom build OS of openSUSE 11.4 using suse studio but when I tried running the LIVE DVD in a laptop with an ATi Mobility Radeon HD 4250, I got a black screen. Everything from the word go seemed fine showing everything from the loading Kernel message, but the screen that is supposed to show the user accounts is surprisingly absent and only a black screen in its place.
I have only seen this problem with ATi graphics, Intel graphics work just fine. I haven't tested it on a laptop with nvidia. I'm using the default openSUSE 11.4 Kernel (Kernel-Desktop 2.6.37.6-0.5.1), Xorg-X11-driver-video-radeonhd 1.3.0_20100512_80ba041-2.1, Mesa 7.10.2-7.3.1, Xorg-X11 7.6-43.44.1. I have listed these few packages contained in the build, but I'm not sure where to look or what I may be missing.

Feb 20, 2010I'm in love with my Opensuse 11.2. Love my KDE 4.4. The only thing I miss from my Ubuntu installation, is the ability to use Boxee. I would be more than willing to compile Boxee from source. I only have 2 problems with that:
1) I don't know where I can find all the build-deps or what they are for that matter to build Boxee.
2) I'm running on a Netbook. Yes, my measly Intel Atom is no fun for compiling and building.
What are my options/what can I do to get Boxee up and running on 11.2? I've tried searching on build service for an RPM, but I think due to legal restrictions, Boxee can't be on there.

My goal is to install the i386 build on one partition and the 64-bit build on another. I have been away from Linux for a while and am sick to death of Win7, want to come home. :-}
Booted on i386 side of DVD, system freezes after a couple of lines that start with ATA2. Does not respond to 3 finger salute, ctrl-c, nothing. Have to press reset. I have tried both huge.s and hugesmp.s kernels
Booted on 64-bit side, comes up fine. I performed the install, selected for automatic lilo install. Lilo install hung but I was able to reboot. I booted off the 64-bit side again, entered the following: huge.s root=/dev/sde3 rdinit= ro It booted fully to the login prompt but the keyboard does not work, no input.

The reason i installed Ubuntu was because I discovered that people i thought were close to me were remotely SPYING ON ME through my computer.Apparently they had access to all my documents And could even hear and see me through my Mic And Web cam.I was using windows 7 with avg anti virus and windows firewall. I would like to be able to use my computer(with they Internet) without having to worry about people stalking me.I would like for it to be practically impossible for these scumbags to get anywhere close to my privacy. I have a router which i connect to with wifi and I'm running the latest version of ubuntu.

Jan 26, 2010I set up my ubuntu server with iptables that only allows ssh in the input chain (and of course established connections) with only the mac adress of my laptop allowed to connect, set up a key with a long passphrase and installed pam_abl plugin. ICMP echo is blocked by default.
The only problem is i log all other attempts to connect to the server and i see a lot of traffic going to ports 445 and 5900.
My question is: Is there a possibility that these attempts could succeed and is there any way to further ensure this server?
