I need to play or preferably convert (i.e. to MP3) old SNG files, which contain voice records. From what I could find, it's basically a MIDI created by synthetiser. I think it was recorded by some ancient VLC player. I failed so far to play it on anything I could download.
am using ubuntu 9.10 .i hve a philips combo drive .my problem is that i can't play .dat files from cd's ,there is no problem with dvd's & other files from cd's .when i checked the permissions it showed the owner as root also there is a lock symbol in .dat files that are already in my pc .

from what i've heard, VLC doesn't support multi-threading, whatever that means, and so plays MKV files with much more CPU use.is there any alternative? i know windows as COREAVC, but i don't believe that software is available for linux.
Trying to figure out why when I open an avi file in VLC I get no sound.
I ran it from Terminal and this is what was spewed out...
VLC media player 1.0.2 Goldeneye [0x98b3140] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface. [0xb7326880] pulse audio output: No. of Audio Channels: 1 QPainter::begin: Paint device returned engine == 0, type: 1
[Code]....
As a side note I did remove PulseAudio and install Esound then removed Esound and installd PulseAudio again, hopefully I did it right, because I get system sounds and no problem with music or ..... for example.

I'm trying to get Rhythmbox to play my WMA files. I did some research and I found an old thread on the forums, and I tried what the people said, but I still can't get my WMA files to play and I can't post any replies Maybe there's something I'm missing?
I am Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) user. I cannot plat any dat file from VCD in my computer. I don't know why? I have already install all gstreamer plugins and Ubuntu Restricted Extras. I tried to play dat files from VCD by Mplayer, VLC player, Movie Player and Kaffein.

I need these for lectures for a class. here is an error when I try to use them from mplayer in the terminal[wmv2 @ 0xb6579e00]header damagedError while decoding frame!Maybe the files are damaged. My audio is working on my recent koala install. System wav files play without a problem.
However, when I open a terminal to play my own wav files I get an error. (I encountered this problem merely by trying to setup an incoming mail notification with CheckGmail....)
The command: aplay /home/saskms/Music/test.wav
The error: aplay: test_wavefile:807: can't play WAVE-file format 0x0002 which is not PCM or FLOAT encoded
I think I have installed all the necessary gstreamer options. I am guessing that maybe I just need to re-rip the WAV file into a different format. I also tried doing searches on the error, but yielded no results.
I have converted a couple of Video Files into OGM using DVD Encoder ( OGM), is there any available software in Linux/ Ubuntu that will enable me to convert these to be able to play on a Standard DVD Player. ( AVI - Mpeg )
I was having a terrible time playing some WMV files and I finally got it working this way: Based on this: [URL]
Step 1 Add the Medibuntu repositories to sources Code: gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list by adding this at the bottom of the file then saving
Code: #medibuntu repositories deb [URL] lucid free non-free
Step 2 Update for that change to take effect Code: sudo apt-get update
Step 3 Install the w32codecs [you won't find it if Medibuntu repositories are not in place] Code: sudo apt-get install w32codecs Step 4 Install Kplayer [so far the only player I can get to work for WMV files]
I'm new to this. The VIDEO_TS folder has a bunch of VOB files sequentially names along with BUP and IFO files. But when I start up VLC and choose 'Open Dir' and point to the VIDEO_TS file, it plays a short trailer of the movie and does not move onto the rest of the VOB files. Is there a was to play them sequentially? or is the only way to select the files in the order in which to play them and then play them all?
