View 1 RepliesI just recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my computer it's a Pentium 4, 2,26 GHz, 1 GB RAM, and 2 40 GB HDD... I ran update manager and installed all the updates. I installed all the Ubuntu restricted extras and I can play all the formats but .flv; there's sound but the all I can see are lines and static.I ran the tests and see if my video card was properly working and all seemed OK. Also every time I play a ..... video or from another site that uses flash the computer totally crashes. I installed Chromium and see if the problem had to do with Firefox but chromium also totally crashes. after rebooting I tried playing another Internet video, but all I could get was a blank screen with sound.
Another issue I had was that right after the installation I could not set the screen resolution higher than 800x600, I don't know if the problem with the flash and the screen resolution are related =X
I created a vmware workstation Debian 7 virtual machine from a debian-7.7.0-amd64-CD-1.iso.
I can play flash video streams from within the browser, i.e. YouTube plays fine. However, if I download a YouTube video, then try to play the flv file, it will not play from a media player.
I either get an "error cannot decode" or just a green screen during playback when using Totem or VLC. I've tried installing about every package out there, yet flv files will not play in any media players.
I also tried running the VM with and without 3d support. It won't play flv's either way.
Is this an issue between a vmware vm and Debian 7? Any success story playing flv files from within a Debian vmware virtual machine?
I need to play or preferably convert (i.e. to MP3) old SNG files, which contain voice records. From what I could find, it's basically a MIDI created by synthetiser. I think it was recorded by some ancient VLC player. I failed so far to play it on anything I could download.

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhat is the minimum computer spec for playing 1080p flash files via a web browser smoothly at least 25fps? We all know that flash is not very good on Linux. On my old computer, I can play 720p flash files in the browser at arount 25fps on Windows, but on Ubuntu on the same computer via dual OS installation, it struggles to play 420p flash files in the browser. So basically, I want to build a new computer and have Ubuntu as the only OS, but this computer needs to be able to play 1080p flash files via the browser (not by downloading and converting them), but straight from the browser smoothly. Is this possible and what would the minimum computer spec need to be to achieve this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have tried to play mp3 files with sox play.
The result I get is:
play FAIL formats: no handler for file extension `mp3'
I have installed all libsox packages I could find, including libsox-fmt-mp3 and libmad0.
sox -h though, gives me:

(no mp3 mentioned there).
The reason I try to play mp3 files with sox is that I wanted to play a playlist with different formats and feed it to ices2 through a pipe, ie :
sox Musik/storlista.pls -t raw - | ices2 ices-pcm.xml sox

I have got a new computer today, It's got most new parts in it but I installed all diffrent types of flashplayers, SMF players all that and I still can't play flash or watch videos.
View 5 Replies View RelatedLast few years (as long as I use linux) I tried several ubuntu/debian installations, on 6-7 different computers (desktops/laptops)What a notice in common on all these installations is that flash videos and games run REALLY bad.Is this a common problem for all debian based distros or I am doing something wrong? I din't give much attention in past (even if tried some repeating flashplayer installations) but last month I'm building a flash arcade site and this flash player problem become a real pain.
View 2 Replies View Relatedflash videos fail with the "an error occurred. please try again later.". going to ..... and randomly selecting videos, it seems that any video submitted after 2008 most likely will not play. older videos play just fine. was there a format change somewhere along the line? i've searched here, but not found anything that covers this situation. there are no additional flash packages installed other than the two below.

Search for suitable codec?
The required software to play this file is not installed. You need to install suitable codecs to play media files. Do you want to search for a codec that supports the selected file?
The search will also include software which is not officially supported.

I was wondering if you could help me out with this Flash problem: sometimes, Flash elements don't play in my browser window - there's just a big white area where my Flash should be. I have to close and re-open Firefox. This especially happens when I activate the "Flashblock" plugin, a very useful tool that blocks all Flash unless you click on it and choose to play it. Whenever I have that enabled, most of the time, clicking on the "play" button produces the white area where the Flash object should be. It's Karmic 64 and Firefox 3.5, Shockwave Flash 10.0.

It happens with any type of video be it avi, mp4, mkv or any other I try to play with exception of flash with my browser. Otherwise everything is perfectly normal.
Do take a note that when I take a screen shot with the program (Totem, VLC or any other video player I play the video) the picture is perfectly normal like so:[url]
I have on my PC:
Ubuntu 10.04
ATI Radeon 9800 XT
AMD Sempron +3000
1 GB DDR2
running kubuntu 9.10 karmic koala, and my sound settings -at first glance- seem to be in order... a strange thing is occurring, is my machine haunted? my sound works when:
a. the machine boots up
b. files are played in dragon player
c. the machine shuts down
my sound does not work when:
1. i try to play streaming flash videos online (e.g. videos videos show the image but no sound will play)
2. the same goes for vlc media player: images yes, sound no.
3. i use skype *edit: additional problem*
i made no changes, that i know of, to my machine before this started happening. one day everything was working fine and i turned off my machine to go to sleep. the next day, i turn on my machine, and surprise, the sound doesn't work in some instances.
My RhythmBox acts weird. It don't play if I recently browse a page that has a flash object in it. Rhythmbox will play if I log off and log in again. How to troubleshoot? I'm running GNU/Linux Debian SID on an AMD Athlon X2 4000+, 40GB HDD, 2GB DDR2 RAM - on board video and sound...
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just got my hands on an MSI E7235-295US and slapped Ubuntu 9.10 on it. So far everything's worked great, but I am beginning to get a bit concerned about my sound quality. The laptop itself has 5 speakers + subwoofer so I should be getting 5.1 sound, if I understand things correctly (the newegg link should provide more details) and when I play anything (music, flash, videos, games, etc...) the sound comes out 'muffled'. Almost as if it is in a concert hall, maybe. I initially wondered if the problem is related to the 5 speakers and if the sound is initially only setup for two. If that is the case, nothing I've done has seemed to made any real difference. I've tried changing the master/pci channels, but it only hides it a little, and doesn't solve the problem.
This seemed to be on the right track, but the laptop is still really new and not listed in the alsa file.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've had this problem on a few flash games (a couple of EA's sports management games on Facebook, and the Pokemon Dream World.) When I first use them everything's fine, but as I continue coming back to them, they seem to run a little slower each time. Ultimately in the case of the former two it got so bad that they were unusual.
Why is this happening? If they were slow from the start I could understood, but what could be making them go wrong on repeated plays?
I'm on 32 bit Kubuntu Lucid, firefox is my browser, and it's the official flash plugin.
I can't seem to be able to find out how to play ogg files in amarok. It has to be a simple solution, but my old eyes can't see it.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy audio is working on my recent koala install. System wav files play without a problem.
However, when I open a terminal to play my own wav files I get an error. (I encountered this problem merely by trying to setup an incoming mail notification with CheckGmail....)
The command: aplay /home/saskms/Music/test.wav
The error: aplay: test_wavefile:807: can't play WAVE-file format 0x0002 which is not PCM or FLOAT encoded
I think I have installed all the necessary gstreamer options. I am guessing that maybe I just need to re-rip the WAV file into a different format. I also tried doing searches on the error, but yielded no results.
