Ubuntu :: Personalized Inverted Theme With Cursor Whiteglass Bigger Size
Oct 24, 2010
Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit installed in laptop hp compaq 6720s, gnome desktop. Personalized inverted theme with cursor whiteglass bigger size. Everything okay in apps except in kde apps I have installed as k3b, ktorrent, when I pass pointer over their windows, the size of cursor is not the bigger but the normal one. Can I do something to fix it?. I used tips in this thread [URL] to make kde apps look like gnome ones.

a client brought in an 160GB external HDD and wanted to get the files off it, there appeared to be no partitions on the disk but i thought it may have been formatted to use the whole disk. I tried to mount it as the various FS types the client thought it may have been to no avail.
I ran testdisk on it which told me that it previously had a mac partition table and a 210GB partition on it (which is larger than the disk) could anyone enlighten me as to whether or not this is even possible, and if so how could i retrieve the data?

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.10, the latest version, into my computer. But I notice that the font is small when browsing the web using Firefox. I need to have a bigger font because of my shortsightedness.

I'm running F15 with KDE right now, and I'm using a non-default cursor theme. All KDE/Qt apps are fine, but if I use Firefox, as an example, which is a GTK app, the cursor theme returns to the default as long as it's inside the Firefox window. Back when I was using GNOME, I noticed the same thing when I had my cursor over a Qt app.

Running 10.04 very nicely, but I have applied a cursor theme - Comixcursor - which appears fine in my Gnome apps, but does not in my KDE apps, i.e. Amarok, and I get the default cursor. Each time I restart my lappy, I have to go into the KDE System Settings to apply it again.

My Cursor is the size I prefer when using firefox, or Epiphany but when I hover program menu options the size gets larger. Other programs like Inscape always have a larger size cursor and the desktop has the big cursor.
I just made the upgrade to the LTS version, I use compiz.
Seems I'm missing some default value but cannot find one that applies system wide?

I have official Compiz Fusion running on my Fedora 13 64-bit. I also installed some custom cursor themes and I'm seeing some strange behaviour. When mouse is on my Desktop the custom cursor theme is replaced by the default one. When I launch Firefox, for example, and move cursor inside Firefox window, then my custom cursor is being shown. Also, if I go to resize some window the custom "resize cursor" is being shown, or if system is processing something then custom hourglass cursor is shown again.
Basically while on Desktop or Gnome panels the custom cursor is being replaced by the default Fedora cursor.
This only happens when I choose Compiz as my window manager. With metacity my custom cursor theme is behaving properly. Is it possible to make Compiz Fusion not to mess with my cursor theme? Or maybe it is a Compiz bug?
Ok, this indeed is a bug, but I'm not sure if it's a Gnome or Compiz bug. Here is a fix (a bad one for now) which might save someone time. The credit for this does not belong to me, I got it form this link. So, here it goes:
1. Install gconf-editor by running "yum -y install gconf-editor"
2. Change your windows manager to metacity temporarily
3. Change your cursor theme to the desired custom one
4. Run gconf-editor and go to "desktop->gnome->peripherals->mouse" and remember the value of "cursor theme" option this gconf-editor branch.
5. Create directory with name "default" in "/home/yourUserName/.icons/" directory.
6. Inside newly created "default" directory create file with name "index.theme" with the following content:
Code:
[Icon Theme]
Name = <anything you want>
Comment = <anything you want>
Example = <anything you want>
Inherits = <THEME NAME YOU FOUND IN STEP 4>
7. After saving the file re-enable Compiz as your window manager and logout/login to your account. The problem with this fix is that you will have to modify "index.theme" file every time you will want to change your icon theme, but it works nevertheless.

I have been trying for quite some days to change the size and theme of the cursor . I was expecting that there be something in preferences in GNOME v2 but is not there (Is there some enhancement there in GNOME v3?) Anyways, after googling quite a bit, I came across a tip to change the the cursor theme. sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme The thing to do here is choose some alternative theme and logout and login back.
[Code].....
Press enter to keep the current choice[*], or type selection number: I haven't been able to find how to change cursor sizes as well and what the current size is? I did find another command xrdb -query but that also doesn't seem to be much helpful either :-

I know, the question seems idiotic, but I accidentally changed all the 'theme fonts' to Sans 12 (a keyboard shortcut handy for switching between different display sizes) I don't know if I'm getting the font or just the size wrong but it doesn't look quite right anymore...
checking the 'correct' font name(s) and size(s) in the appearance settings under 'Fonts'.

My problem is that I use a awful lot of characters. I do math which means I want to be able to type Greek letters and mathematical symbols, and I also want to be able to type Polish and Russian characters. I figure for Cyrillic I should just make a separate layout since I wouldn't want to type with one hand on some special key all the time anyway. What I would like to do would be to use the right alt for Polish and math symbols (there are enough keys to go around) and use a different shortcut for Greek letters, preferably not involving switching layouts.
I know only a very small bit about how xkb works (I at least know where the layout files are, what each key is called, and how to do trivial manipulations, but that's it) and none of the tutorials i could find were very informative about what I need to know.
One stupid, hopefully easy problem is that I do not know how to input math characters because I do not know their names (for characters like integral, less than or equal to, direct sum, etc) or if/how I can put in Unicode ids or something of that nature.
The other thing is that I don't know how to set up a separate key combination (say right-alt - backslash) to use Greek letters.

I have spent the last few days setting up SeaMonkey and I've finally got it just the way I like it, and I thought I might share a few tricks I found scattered around the net.
Add-ons: Ad-block (self explanatory)
No-script (self explanatory)
Mouse Gestures (set up similar to Opera's mouse gestures)
Compact Menu - Free up screen real estate with a single menu button.
Lightning v1.0b1 - Calender Extension. (Version 1.0b2 doesn't support SM)
Theme- Using Mostly Crystal
Tricks- Home Button Hack - Add a improvised home button
Speed Dial Hack - Create your own Speed-Dial functionality
I also found it helpful to set the location bar to NOT append www. or .com to text entered into the search bar. (Preferences -> Location Bar -> Untick)
Not sure if this is terribly helpful to anyone but SeaMonkey now behaves (IMHO) a lot nicer and looks great. [PhotoBucket]

After upgrading to Natty/Unitiy I was having problems with very slow and choppy window motion. I tried reinstalling fglrx, and now some of the colors in firefox are coming out inverted (e.g. yellow -> purple) or perhaps just scrambled in some other way (see attached screenshot). There are no other issues I've seen other than some colors in firefox. Most colors look okay.
I downloaded chromium and there are no problems with colors there. I've also upgraded to the latest fglrx drivers from the ATI website and nothing changed. I also uninstalled and reinstalled firefox and still the colors are coming out strangely. Some info. I have an HP Pavilion tx2500ca, with ATI Technologies Inc RS780M/RS780MN [Radeon HD 3200 Graphics].

I rediscovered a concert I converted ~3yrs ago but playback inverts the colour. It plays ok on Windows and virtualdub reports the avi as DivX though I believe I was using xvid & ffdshow at the time. how to invert the inverted colours?
I discovered the extended settings in vlc. I guess it just doesn't show the colour blue. Kind of ironic because of the concert.

Im running netbook remix on a eeepc 1005ha. It is my only OS and Im loving it except for one obnoxious quirk. It randomly cuts text and randomly pastes it. If there is something in the clipboard, it will usually paste that, but just as often it will cut random text and paste that. The pastes occur when the cursor focus jumps back to the location of the cursor on the screen. I dont know a better way to phrase that, but thats what it is doing. Say... I put the cursor over the word "pastes" in the paragraph above... even though Im typing in this paragraph, the focus will "jump" to the cursors physical locale (the word "pastes") and then paste whatever is in the clipboard. If the cursor is outside of the textbox, the page will jump to the bottom.
This behavior occurs across programs and in any place text can be entered. I can find no rhyme or reason for it... it just... happens. Sometimes even when Im away from my computer, so its not like Im hitting some key on accident. I have loved everything about this ubuntu distro, but this issue is just toany obnoxious. Writing psych papers on this thing is going to be near impossible if I dont get this fixed before I go back to school.

I have Asus Eee PC T 101 mt. Running SuSE Linux 11.4, KDE version 4.6.0 (Release 6).
The image from integrated webcam is inverted. The image can be upturned to correct orientation by ticking the "Upturned" effect in Webcam (wxCam) application. However, these options are not available in Skype or Google video, or probably in all other services using webcam. Other person in video chat sees my inverted image. Is there a way by which I can correct the situation?

Am running Ubuntu NBR as the sole OS on my Dell Mini 9. Switched over in March to 9.10 NBR. Everything worked fine.Upgraded to 10.04 when it was released. It's awesome EXCEPT for this busy cursor thing. As soon as I log in, all the time my cursor is the spinning wheel of busyness.... It works just as a normal cursor would - my computer also does not seem to be slower due to any operations. If I open an application, the cursor will behave as usual within the window but if I more my cursor to the title bar or switch out of the application, the "busy cursor" resumes.

I've had the same Fedora server (filewise) since it was RedHat, but I'm getting major issues with an open Bugzilla report and I'm considering a brand new install.
The thing is - I've had files on this server since 1999, really, with personalized settings and everything in between.
Is there any easy way to start a fresh install (on a brand new hard drive) and migrate my files over? Otherwise, how does one do a fresh install without losing files and programs they've been painstakingly been trying to maintain for an entire decade?
I don't even know how to install half of this stuff anymore. The computer was on autopilot for the better half of the last 10 years.
Is there an easy way to back up settings and restore them?

Just updated to OpenSuSE 11.4 with KDE 4.6
Code:
When I print to my HP LaserJet 1020 - which has worked fine since OpenSuSe 10.x to OpenSuse 11.3, any images print inverted.
For example, what is white in the image is printed black, and what is black in the image is printed white. When printing a document from LibreOffice, text on the same page as the image prints correctly.
I've checked that this is happening when printing images from LibreOffice, Okular, and Gimp, and tried it with PNG, TIF, and GIF image formats.
However, when I open HPLIP and send a test print through, it prints correctly - text and images all normal.

I'm having a problem with my screen in opensuse 11.4.Everything is ok until the login screen. After the login, when kde starts, the screen gets inverted, rotating 180 grades. The system performance is very slow when this happens. I tried to disable the KMS to use the default system driver, what worked. But with this option, I don't have the performance and resolution available with KMS.

For some reason, from time to time on login, as my normal theme starts to load, it changes to some sort of silver theme (a very basic one), and I am unable to change it over to any other theme. Checking the theme being used, it still says my desired one is set, but it is not. Also, no matter what theme I change it to, that basic silver theme is the one being used. This includes a default icon theme, not the one I prefer.
The only option that seems to fix things is a restart, and the hope that on this login it won't mess up like before.I am using Natty, from a fresh install, with Ubuntu Classic as my desktop, and have reinstalled things more than once to try and fix a few of the Natty-related issues, but this one keeps coming back.
