I have recently setup my laptop to dual boot Win 7 and Karmic. Before I installed Karmic I shrank the space on one of the drives to accommodate Ubuntu. However, when I put the live CD in the drive - it gave me the option of installing Karmic next to Windoze or in the free space that I had created. I chose it to go next to Win 7 because it inferred that a choice of OS would be given on boot up by putting it next to Win 7.
However, I have a 35Gb 'unallocated' (as stated by GParted) - this is the space that I created but have not used. I wanted to remove this partition to maximise potential storage and would be grateful for advice on how this can be achieved.
I have a clean install of Fedora 12 and trying to mount a second hard disk with data created under Fedora 8. Nautilus lists the hard disk and can see all the folders and files under Places > Computer. However, Nautilus only lists hte hard disk (/dev/sdc) but no partitions (e.g. sdc1, sdc2) under Filesystem. LVM shows Partition1, Partition2 and UnPartitioned space under /dev/sdc. LVM shows Partition2 as 'uninitialized Disk Entity /dev/sdc2'. If I try to 'Block Initialize' Partition2 (which is the largest listed partition), LVM warns all data in the partition will be erased. A partition with all the data is on the hard disk because Nautilus can see it but the partition is not listed under /dev/sdc so I can mount it.
I'm dual booting with Win Xp at the moment and have been google-ing and tinkering about with my distro and i'm learning new stuff everyday but I have a question about something that's been bothering me. I think i've figured out that the / partition is similar to the C: Drive in windows which contains program files n stuff am i right? and the home partition which contains users and their files is an offshoot of the root?
So if this is the case, i was in the expert partitioner in YAST to see how the the drive was partitioned and was wondering if the / partition was too big and if i could decrease the size and add it to the /home?. My sys specs are 512mb RAM Dell Dimension 3000 with an 80GB HDD 2.8Ghz Intel Celeron. I also have a 80Gb and 160Gb External laptop drives mainly for my movies n music n stuff. Also is the Swap partition a good size for the spec of computer i have?
I have a Fedora / Windows 7 dual boot machine. I went to a website that explained how to do it step by step with pictures. Except now I can't boot back into windows, which I need for work.I installed grub but don't know how to find it or set options. Total Newb) Windows recovery sees my installation but tells me that there's no problem with it, and I can find files in an image. When grub comes up it offers me boot choices, but Other takes me to a screen that says, "BOOTMGR is Missing" Ctrl-alt-del to restart.
It's trying to fix/complete failed installs but keeps encountering the same errors (error message below). I'm running basically Testing, but there are a few Stable and SID packages due to issues with the blasted nVidia legacy drivers. I've swapped out the video board with an ATI board so that is sorted, but now I can't do any updates. Hoping there is some way to manually override apt's determination to try to fix all broken packages whenever I do anything (install, remove, update, etc). A Google search of this error message didn't turn up anything recent. Any thoughts are welcome.
I recently been given my dad's old netbook which is a toshiba nb100
I installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition onto it as i have some experiance with linux and have used ubuntu before and thought it would speed up this little machine. After the initial grind of the instal, it seemed to be running fine, however i didnt really like the netbook layout.
I noticed on the log in screen that i could select the desktop or netbook edition, is that normal? i have been using the desktop version since.
I have been doing some research however into the 11.04 release that is almost ready, and is ready in alpha stages. And what i understand is that the netbook layout is called Unity, and will be replacing gnome.
If and when i upgrade to 11.04, if i upgrade on the netbook login, will it replace both the logins i have access to currently, because the ubuntu install is changed and that was basically just choosing which display to use, unity or gnome. is that right?
Also i heard that for the 11.10 release they will be bringing the gnome desktop back? and that ubuntu netbook edition is being scrapped as they are basically merging
At the moment i prefer the desktop layout as i know where to access everything, although im sure i could get used to Unity, if its not too graphically demanding.
Either way i think i will wait till the end of april to upgrade to 11.04 as this laptop is fairly slow to begin with.
our 9.x servers are running perfect. Just setup 5 new webservers, running 10.04LTS. Have SNMPD running, installed and the same config for all the servers I just copied over, by config, I mean one line, that's it. So the servers have the following /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf file rocommunity public
That's it. Now the only difference is looking at the ps on the local box's, a working one shows;

I am trying to install windows wireless drivers using ndiswrapper to have better connectivity around my house(I can only currently get online in certain rooms, very restricted). I have ndiswrapper installed OK, but I am a bit lost on the step where I have to browse to my windows wireless driver(a .inf file I believe), my question is how do I know where this is? I can't seem to locate it at all. I'm running on windows vista.
I have the issue described in [URL]... Workaround A allows me to boot, but to make changes permanent, the above suggests I run the following command: echo options i915 modeset=1 | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf sudo update-initramfs -u But when I do this I am told that the 'u' parameter does not exist in tee. There are only 'a' or 'i' parameters.
Today I setup the 'Evolution mail' with my gmail account. I could do it properly. Only problem is its downloading over 500 emails that are already present in the gmail, I don't want to import all the previous messages. I want only the new messages that are going to be sent to me today onwards. Can I do such settings/ use filters while using 'send/receive' ?
I've got a database and I've got a Java program that I'm programming in Netbeans that is suppose to run queries to the database. how I will set about to connect the database with the Java program so that I can run the queries?
It is very important that I learn how to do this, else I am forced to go back to XP in order to finish this project on time.
Very new to Ubuntu and Linux so this may be a simple one. I've recently setup an Ubuntu Server 10.04 box as a mail relay running Postfix and Amavisd-new (Spamassassin & ClamAV) and this has been working really well. I started to get a few emails through today with the following header[URL]..(removed domain name) The name's always in quotes and random. The fqdn is that which I configured in postfix as $myhostname. I can't figure out how this address is being used. This box is only used for incoming mail and acts as a relay to Exchange. Exchange doesn't send out through it. The only thing that may be going outwards is bounced messages from Exchange which are almost exclusively to linkedin.
The fqdn isn't public. This box isn't even part of our internal domain, it's just named that way with manual DNS added. Anyone seen this before? Will this header have been part of the message when it arrives at postfix or could this have been added by postfix itself?
After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 I get the following warning /etc/cron.daily/man-db: dpkg-query: warning: parsing file '/var/lib/dpkg/available' near line 59383 package 'amaya': error in Version string 'wx-11.3.1-1': version number does not start with digit

when I run netstat -s I get a whole listing of different statistics on udp/tcp. what I would like is to be able to understand those terms e.g. TCPLossFailures and link them with the appropriate TCP/IP terminology. There must be some refernce guide somewhere that shows what these fields mean or what they are tracking.
My goal is to download a .deb package(e.g vlc) from the cmd line so that I do not always need to connect to the internet using the normal apt-get install cmdFrom the cmd line I typed sudo apt-get -d install vlc. After the operation is completed, is the downloaded file in a .deb form and where is it downloaded to?
I'm currently running Hardy and XP in a dual boot setup. I want to install Lucid but don't want to overwrite my working Hardy partition and am worried by the number of reported problems with Grub2. XP is currently taking up all of my first hard drive. Second hard drive is : Hardy, then swap, then separate /home. After a bit of research, does this sound like a good plan ? ...
- Use gparted from the Live CD to shrink my Windows partition (then make sure XP still boots OK ) - Create a new partition after XP on drive 1 - Install Lucid in this new partition, using Advanced option, and tell it use my existing swap and home partitions on drive 2 (with no format, of course) - Write Grub to this new partition - Boot Hardy, and edit grub manually ( or use StartUp Manager, will it detect Lucid and add it as an option ? ) - Reboot and get options for Hardy, XP, and Lucid.
Does that sound correct, especially the Grub bits? When I'm happy that Lucid is OK I'll probably install Grub from it to the MBR.
I installed Matlab in Ubuntu 10.10. I was able to get it running and I saw the initializing screen. However it showed me an error with OpenGL "warning : could not query OpenGL" and it freezes there. I tried many things to get over with it and it didn't work.
I've tried to use workbench but it's such a big step backwards in that you can't easily edit the output from a "select x,y,z from table" query. I'd have thought that was a pretty basic requirement...
I'm using Net::Bluetooth to create an RFCOMM socket on my Linux box. I need for it to register with SDP with a specific UUID. The perl code can be viewed in this link. I am unable to make the connection from a remote device however. This remote device (my Android phone) is able to connect to other RFCOMM devices using this UUID. I would like to troubleshoot the problem, but I can't find a way to browse the LOCAL SDP records of my PC where the Perl script is running (and waiting for incoming BT connections). how to browse the SDP records on the local PC?

I am writing an application using libnetfilter_queue that should perform the following function- Receives packets from NFQUEUE- Apply a decryption algorithm to packets- Issue an ACCEPT verdict for decrypted packetsThese packets are destined to another box behind the firewall running the above mentioned application.Based on Fig 14-1 from the link belowI intend on siphoning out network packets at the PREROUTING chain of the Mangle table by usingiptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p 1234 -j NFQUEUE1) I would like to know if the PREROUTING chain in the mangle table is an appropriate place to pick off the encrypted packets ?2) Once the ACCEPT verdict is issued will the modified packets resume processing along the PREROUTING chain of the mangle table ?3) Is there a well documented reference for API's that i will need to use while developing this application ?
