Ubuntu :: Opera Segfault Closed Gnome-session - And GParted ?
Sep 12, 2010
I was using GParted to move and resize a few partitions on my external HDD that I use for backup purposes. Well while this was going on, I was using Opera to reply to a post on the forums and Opera segfaulted, which in turn crashed GNOME. Gnome restarted, I logged back in, my external HDD was still reading/writing furiously and GParted won't open.
So I know that the GParted I started is still running, although the handle that GParted had on its GUI is still locked - so I can't open a new GParted GUI - and the existing GParted GUI has closed - so now I can't check on the progress of my partition operation.

I am downloading a big file on linux VPS, and I am connecting remotely via Putty to do it? Once I initiated the wget command to download the file, if I close the putty window, will wget continue to download the file in the background even though the session is technically closed?

When i logged into a gnome desktop i got this message: "The GNOME session manager was unable to read file:'/home/(desktop name)/ICEauthority'. If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." What commands do i use for that? or do i need to do something else?

I'm currently building a ubuntu distro and would like to run a script on GNOME startup. I've read about doing it through the session manager but I have to do it through chroot so I'll need to set it up as a terminal command. Is there a way to add an item to the Session Manager from terminal or, even better, a directory where I can put the script so it will run on start?

I have installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 on my Sony Vaio netbook. I want to be able to log into a Gnome session as an alternative to UNR. The main reason for wanting to do this is to be able to add some applets to the panel which I use a lot. This is not possible in UNR, which is really irritating! However, I really like UNR otherwise, so don't want to just install standard version.
Synaptic shows that Gnome is not installed, but when I try to install it, I get this error message:
gnome: Depends: swfdec-mozilla but it is not going to be installed
I tried uninstalling Epiphany, which I sometime use instead of Firefox, but still got the error. I installed Ubuntu-Desktop, but when I select "Gnome" from the session menue at the bottom of the login page, it just logs into UNR session.
How do I install Gnome desktop so that I can log into a Gnome session?

I'm having issues logging into my system... After authenticating via GDM, the screen goes black with only the mouse showing and remains this way indefinitely. At first the hard disk is active to a similar degree as it was when logins were successful, but then the system (apart from being able to move the mouse) is unresponsive.
If left for long enough so that the screen goes into power-saving mode, moving the mouse brings up the unlock dialogue that you normally get if you set your computer to lock itself after a period of idleness.
I suspect some sort of file corruption, as I have not changed any settings recently. I have forced checks on all of my disks in the hope it would solve this problem. I have also tested logging in on a freshly created user account I created which gives the same result. Also, starting an xterm session from GDM works fine.

I've got two ubuntu machines and i want to connect via ssh into a existing gnome session. (or a new one if that is possible) VNC works fine(well slow and unresponsive) but when trying ssh i get problems. After som trial and error(some permissions on host, i did sudo startx and screwed up) i logged in and could start xterm. Anyway now i want to use gnome, so i wrote "gnome-session" - something i read would work but i got ALOT of errors.
Code:

I have both a mac and ubuntu box sitting on my desk. I work on the mac and access the ubuntu box over ssh.Often I need the point-and-click interface of the ubuntu box, at which point I run gnome-session. The problem is that the top and bottom menu bars fill the full size available to them, which can cause me problems (I use two different-sized screens and the barsget hidden), and overall it looks very messy. I would therefore like to confine the gnome-session to a window, much like you get with vnc (or parallels if you're running a virtual ubuntu session).

Gnome sessions started hanging during login on a debian lenny box, and I can only think it's related to a recent package update as it was working fine before the last set. It affects all user accounts and hangs before the applications menu or any icons appear on the panels, but after after the top /bottom panels and the desktop background appears.

I have 3 Ubuntu installations & a PCLINUXOS, plus Windows XP installed on one hard disk. I still can boot to each one of them and can mount each one using Ubuntu.
The problem "may" have occurred when I reduced the size of some linux partitions using gparted. I still have plenty of space in each of those partitions.
When I started gparted all of the HD was unallocated. I did that from each ubuntu installation and the PCLINUX installation, plus LIVECDs. All indicated the space was unallocated.
When I did an fdisk -l from a Puppy Linux LiveCD I got a normal start and ends of each partition.
When I tried it from Ubuntu installation or live cd, I received the following types of responses:
Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda5
Disk /dev/sda5: 28.5 GB, 28566397440 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 3473 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -u /dev/sda5
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 3473.There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) Plus the Windows partition seems to go over its limits.
Since all of my OS installations are still working, I don't know how critical this is. From reading another post, I understand this might be able to be fixed by making some changes in fstab.

I have just installed a version of 32 bits Lucid LTS on a server box. I would like to setup a VNC service so that I will be able to login to the server with VNC viewer and spawn a gnome-session. I ran the following command:
Code:
apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
apt-get install Xvnc xinetd
I was in front of the server and make sure that I can start a gdm locally. Then, I added Xvnc service to xinetd following the guide here: {URL] I was only using a session, and /etc/xinetd.d/Xvnc is as follow:
Code:
service Xvnc
{
type = UNLISTED
disable = no
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = yes
user = root
server = /usr/bin/Xvnc .....
After all, I restart gdm by "/etc/init.d/gdm restart". When I try to start a VNC connection from another machine, I can see Xvnc running successfully. But XDMCP does not run properly and I cannot see a traditional ubuntu login screen. I am sure that port 177 UDP is opening by looking at the output of "netstat -anp".

after the upgrade to maverick, gnome-session-save doesn't save applications on shutdown or logout as it did on Lucid.I've noticed the following things:
On Lucid, if I had a stopped job in a shell, the system refused to logout or shutdown, showing a confirmation window. On Maverick, the CPU goes to 100% and then the computer shuts down; on reboot, no application is saved
On Maverick, if there are NO stopped jobs in a shell, I can logout cleanly but only a few applications are saved (eg. terminal, firefox) but others aren't (eg. empathy,evolution) I've checked "Automatically remember application on exit" in "Session management" menu.

This is regarding the 'screen' utility. I use an utility called 'HummingBird Exceed' to get the XSession of a linux client on my windows desktop (basically it uses XDMCP). But the pain is that at the end of the day, when I close Exceed, the session gets destroyed. I did lot of searching on the web to know how the save and restore session in Exceed, but failed. However, I found that 'screen' is the utility which keeps the session intact even when you logout. So, I did the following:
a. Logged into the machine using Putty (terminal emulator).
b. Started 'screen'.
c. Issued the command: /usr/bin/gnome-session
I got the XSession on the Exceed and started working. I opened three or four gnome-terminals. But when I logout of exceed(and detach from the screen), the screen displayed a message saying that 'Connection to XServer was lost". Hence I could not restore to this session when I reattached to the screen. how do I use 'screen' so that when I attach to the screen on which I had started gnome-session, it attempts to connect to the Xserver and open the session as it was before detaching?

I installed jessie from a beta/rc shortly before release on my MacBook Pro 13 Retina and have kept it up to-date with apt-get dist-upgrade. Rcently gdm3/gnome-session have stopped working together. When I log in the screen goes black for a couple of seconds then goes back to the login screen. This happens with "System Default", "GNOME Classic" and "GNOME", but not with "GNOME on Wayland". However, Wayland seems to have some other issues. I haven't tried an alternative dm yet, eg lightdm, but the GNOME desktop does work when started with startx.
I've just used journalctl to get logs of what gdm3 and gnome-session were doing at the time. After booting I waited until the clock reached the next minute (19:55) so I'd know at which point in the logs I'd hit enter on my password. I'll post the gdm log separately in two chunks because the forum server doesn't seem to like text attachments and they're too long for one post.

Is it possible to run the GNOME session manager but not have a window manager? It would also be nice to have a panel (or at least a status notification area) that was in a window, rather than a title-bar less menu bar.
The reason I want this is that I'm using my Mac's X server and logging into a VM running Fedora on the same host. And I've noticed some things, like the ability to use USB tethering, depend on a D-Bus session being active, and possibly the NetworkManager widget in the panel.
From IRC - #gnome:<borschty> ok, then go to gconf-editor somewhere under /desktop/session there should be something like "required_components" and remove window-manager from that list. You could use something like wmctrl to change the window-type of the panel, but a) that might break stuff and b)
