Ubuntu :: Opening A Browser In WINE?
Oct 26, 2010
I have been working on this program for Windows all month http://www.smashindex.com it is a logging program for amateur radio. Anyway, 75 percent of my users are using Linux. I'm guessing with WINE because the program is Windows based. That's all fine and well with me, but I have a problem. The donations option, opens a browser and lets the user make a donation to my paypal account, and the callsign lookup option opens the browser to the qrz.com database for whatever callsign the user enters. WINE, doesn't seem to support opening browsers for my software, but I've seen it do it for other software. I was wondering what I needed to run to have WINE open a browser on linux like the other software I've seen do it.Here is a snippet of the code used to open the browser to my donations page:
Code:
[DONATE]
CLS
PRINT "SMASHINDEX.COM WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR DONATING"
PRINT "TO THE DEVELOPEMENT OF THIS AND OTHER SMASHINDEX"
[code].....
What can I run the URL with that WINE will understand?

was a regular windows user for ~10 years now, but my current pc wasnt installing windows for some reason so i switched to linux to try it out. I've been trying to run a few small games here and there to keep me entertained, and wine just isnt agreeing with me ... Any program i try to open with wine, it says "opening _____________" in the taskbar, and then NOTHING HAPPENS! This is really irritating me, becuase if i got an error message i could try to figure out whats wrong, but when NOTHING AT ALL happens

Have installed Wine - version 1.2.3-Oubuntu1-ppa2-maverick1(wine1.2) from the Ubuntu softwear center . Downloaded windows executable PAF5EnglishSetup.exe which is a Genealogy softwear program from a trusted source (familysearch.org) .
However , when i attempt to open with Wine Windows Program Loader i get the pop up window saying the file is not marked as executable then reference to "executable bit" . I then see the following:
"You should only mark a file as executable via the file permissions if you know what you are doing." I do not know what i am doing . Therefore , reluctant to go messing with something i am not familiar with but i really need this softwear installed .

I have tried switching off and re-starting the unit but no effect. What can I do to fix it ?

I am having trouble with the dvdfab8 window opening up when accessing it under wine. I installed it, but when I went to wine and clicked on it, nothing happens. Also is there a good tutorial for dvd::rip. I ripped a movie, but not sure how to transcode it to be backed up to a blank single layer dvd.

Some windows programs won't run after I have installed them with Wine. They either won't run or they make the screen go to a black painting screen (screen goes black and you can paint over it with your mouse to make the desktop reappear). I have tried changing the windows version and made no difference. I have even tried opening it in a virtual window and made no difference (Window opens then closes)

I tried the Googles praised Chromium browser and while it seems to render pages fast enough and has a really nice interface, I experienced an annoying responsiveness problem. Opening a link in a background tab seems to stall the browser almost completely until the page has been loaded and rendered. For example scrolling the page that I'm currently viewing becomes almost impossible. The same actually applies to the current tab too, of course. If the page in the tab hasn't been loaded completely, scrolling is really really clumsy. I tried disabling the installed extensions and also tried experimenting with some command line options, but no help there.

Has anyone found a program like iPhone Browser that works in Wine? Just something I can access my system files with, like var/mobile/library/downloads. I am aware that Ubuntu can only SSH through Wi-fi and my desktop is not wifi compatible, yet. So I need something I can access the files through USB.

Is it possible to run Windows Firefox plugins/addons under Wine while the browser itself is the native Linux Firefox? For example; I am considering taking the introduction to Linux Open University course, but the course requirements state the need to use Shockwave Player. Obviously Shockwave Player is not available for Linux but it is (allegedly) possible to run both the Windows version of Firefox and Shockwave Player under Wine. I would prefer to run the Linux version of Firefox natively with only the Windows version of Shockwave Player using Wine.
Is there some method to achieve this ? Maybe there is some kind of wrapper application, something like the one used for Windows wireless networking drivers (NDISWrapper) or maybe there are instructions on how to embed the Shockwave Player using Wine in Firefox somewhere. Obviously my needs are quite specific but I am sure that being able to use Windows browser plugins/addons under the Linux version of Firefox would be of interest to at least a few other people.

I have a Cent OS 5.4 32 bit final installed in my dedicated server.
I used to run lighttpd with php in my server until now and all was fine. But yesterday I changed my website which needs apache to run. So installed apache using yum install httpd command.
Then I added the virtual host name of my domain in webmin panel but when i try to run my php script in browser then its not opening php pages.
Instead it downloads php files like index.php when i open in browser. So I guess apache is not able to compile and run php pages. Only html pages are opening right now..

while trying to get a game to work on wine I was surprised to find out that the wine version that ships with sid is 1.0.1 released in October 2005. So I installed the latest release I found at [URL] like this :
dpkg -i wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
The install failed, I think because I hadn't remove the old wine version, and that's when the joy-ride started. Impossible to remove wine to restart properly. (apt-get remove libwine wine and apt-get -f install didn't) After some googling I tried this :
dpkg -i --force-depends wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
This did install the wine version I wanted, and the game ran fine after that. However the result was a borked apt-get. Tried to remove wine again with the above commands, resulting in apt-get failing to do so because it tried installing wine-unstable and reported errors similar to these : E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'wine-unstable'. see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. maybe my questions sounds funny: i'm looking for a very small (or better as small as necessary) distro which runs in a virtual box an starts wine. The reason is: we have new laptops in my school runnig windows7 64bit home and we have some software which runs only on WinXP. So why not take a virtualbox wich runs wine to start the old Software?

Lot of questions about WINE... When I'm done I'm going to make a HOWTO so that others can do what I did It's hard work, but I'm nearly done. The last problem I'm having is the WINE menu on GNOME won't show up after a install of WINE from a .deb package (it usually does). This was after I compiled WINE from source and removed it with "make uninstall" and "rm -rf /.wine".So now I installed the WINE from a deb package and the Wine menu entry is not showing up.I've tried re-installing Wine and rebooting my PC but nothing seems to work.

I have a problem running a game on a fresh Slackware64 install.
Slack version is 13.37
I've followed alien bobs instructions for a multilib environment from here:[url]
And then used sbopkg to download and compile wine version 1.2.2, which went through just fine.
After that I grabbed cabextract from sbopkg and ran this: wget [url] sh winetricks d3dx9 To get the DX9.
But, when I try to run the game, this is the error I get:
Code:
The game it self ran perfectly on the 32 bit version of Slackware, tested with 13.0. So now I think I'm missing some libs or something, but I have no clue which.

I don't know if it's just my system, but after applying the latest Wine update, the mouse cursor in Wine windows is now purple/magenta/pink, whatever. Not a big problem, just annoying. I've looked through the various config files in ~home and /usr/share/wine, and can't find any parameter that might even remotely address this.
