When I try to open any nfs-mounted file using OpenOffice, I get a pop-up window titled "Document in Use". The text of the message is:
"Document file 'abcde.odt' is locked for editing by:
Unknown User
Open document read-only or open a copy of the document for editing." I then have three options - <Open Read-Only>, <Open Copy>, & <Cancel> If I cp any of these files from the mounted directory to my home dir (not mounted), I can open them without problem.Also, my firefox & thunderbird date are in this mounted directory as well (sym links to ~dan/.mozilla & ~dan/.thunderbird). Both of these apps hang when trying to open, leaving two processes behind that need to be manually killed. Again, cp'ing the data out of the nfs-mounted dir onto a local dir resolves the issue, so I am 100% confident there is nothing missing or corrupted in the firefox &/or thunderbird data...
relevant entry in /etc/fstab:
server:/nfs/dan/Documents /home/dan/Documents nfs defaults 0 0
relevant entry in server's /etc/exports:
/nfs/dan/Documents client(rw)

Oct 1, 2010I have a while(1) loop, and the error is: glibtop: open (/proc/stat): Too many open files This error occurs after about a half hour to an hour of running. I've tried running this multiple times, both with using glib_close() at the end of the loop, using glib_init() and glib_close() at beginning/end, and just using glib_init(). The strange thing is these have no effect on the actual glib_get functions.

Jun 13, 2010I have a few .txt files that when opened in gedit give me an error "Could not open the file - gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding" HOWEVER, I can see some of the contents of the files (a few words) in the icon preview in nautilus. Also, I can open these documents in notepad (using wine) though I'd prefer to use gedit.
These might not all be txt files. I know one is directory of important phone numbers that was in some obscure format that could only be opened on a nokia phone.

Sep 24, 2010I've got a strange problem with clamdscan. I'm intending to use it alongside the Anomy sanitizer, so I've set up a directory /var/spool/sanitizer with owner clamav. Clamdscan refuses to scan anything in this directory, claiming it can't open any of the files despite it running as the owner of the files. It can scan some files in other directories, although there doesn't seem to be much pattern as to which files will scan.
This is a fresh install of Ubuntu server 10.04.1, using bog-standard packages.

May 21, 2011I'm using natty on a fresh install. Is there a way to disable the syncing of open files ? When working on a document, I tend to save every time I make a small change to the file. U1 tries to sync the file every time, but sometimes I resave new changes before the previous syncing is complete, resulting in conflicts with the cloud version of the file, sometimes downloading back an already outdated version of the file I'm working on (in addition to the various .u1conflict files created in my folder). I think a sensible behaviour would be to (be able to) wait until the file is closed to start the syncing
