Ubuntu :: Number Pad Not Working After Login
Sep 4, 2010
I can't think of what would cause this problem. The num lock light is on and I can sign in with the number pad (password is all numbers) but when I get into Ubuntu the number pad stops working with numlock light on or off.

If I only want to let a user be able to login via telnet a max number of times equal to 2 how would I go about doing this?I have found this little tid bit:per_source = 2but that only allows 2 connections from the same source (i.e. network) and that would not work. For some reason our telnet sessions are not dying off after a user has shutdown their PC and then the next time they login it adds another telnet session.

i am having a boot problem with opensuse.i installed a theme named suse-elegant under personal settings(configure desktop)-system administration-login screen.
i had also added vbox users(i ticked vboxusers) under yast-security and users-user and group management-edit-details to make virtual box work.
i want to check that installed theme so i restarted my laptop.after the restart opensuse taking too long time to boot
note:the login theme also not working.
after the boot i restored defaults in login screen themes.it is also not working.
i don't know which cause this problem(vboxusers or login theme).i am also seeing a root user has been added in my login area.i tried opensuse failsafe also.

For reasons I can't even begin to figure out, the number pad does NOT work.i can get the num lock light to come on, but pressing the keys there produces no love at all. Right before I installed F10, my F8 x64 had been working flawlessly for a VERY long time and I have been able to verify that the keypad still functions both with the M$ Windoze Vi$ta virus and a live Knoppix CD.Since this is the first time I have had this issue, I don't even know where to look to consider solving this.
I did try the System->Preferences->Hardware->Keyboard and all of the HP layouts listed there, but I still can't get anything more than the Num Lock light to come on and go out.

1) Keyboard number keys on the right side, including backslash, plus, minus, etc. stopped working. The rest of the keyboard seems okay. It's not just this keyboard, either, because I plugged in my other keyboard and it has the same problem.
2) My mouse seems to have an intermittent problem in which it stops working for a few seconds or a minute. I can move it around the screen but I'm not able to click on anything. Sometimes if I wait long enough, it returns to normal. If I logout using the keyboard commands and log in again, it seems okay, at least until the next occurrence.
I'm running 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx. I installed a kernel update a couple of weeks ago (2.6.32-29) but I've gone back to -28 in the hope that it would solve the problem. It has not. Is there a software package I need to reinstall or some other way to revert keyboard and mouse settings to defaults?

i have a question about vmware fusion (3.0.1) and ubuntu (9.1) i just created the ubuntu virtual disk yesterday, and have not done anything on it besides change some minor stuff (background, theme, etc). for some reason this morning, the login screen has been freaking out. the vm loads and shows the login screen, i click my name and enter my password, i get the cool music, but right before my desktop loads it goes straight back to the login screen and i have to start over. it does this over and over until i cry and give up. i have tried restarting the vm, restarting the host computer, everything. every once in a while it will randomly work, but then if i restart, back to the same issue

I have an Acer 5102 WLMi laptop from 2005 with Ubuntu 9.10 installed. It has worked fine for years but now when I boot up my mouse and keyboard don't respond leaving me stuck at the login screen. I have tried using a USB mouse without sucess. My USB-powered cooling fan still works in all three USB ports fine. I have tried booting into the LiveCD and got the same results except for the CD auto-logging in. Eht0 still auto-connects to the network fine in the LiveCD. I can't find any wrong except for the keyboard and mouse not responding. My next step is to burn a LiveCD with start-up scripts to enable ssh. Also the touch-pad doesn't respond either

I have a Fedora 12 server that I've been using as a server for the past few months. Everything has been going ok. I built it to be used as a home theater PC as well as a proxy server (for when I need to use public wifi) and file server for my home network, nothing too complicated. I wanted to watch some stuff on the server, and needed to change the graphics to the nvidia proprietary driver. I did it just as I've done it on my desktop and laptop, by adding "rdblacklist=nouveau" to the end of the kernel line in grub, rebooting, and installing the kmod-nvidia from rpmfusion's yum repo. When I did so, it updated my kernel to the latest version, along with some other stuff that I didn't pay much attention to.
Before I rebooted, I changed my default runlevel to 3. When it came back, I couldn't login. None of my userIDs (to include root) were working. I rebooted into single user mode, and tried to reset my passwords ...... no userIDs were recognized, not even root. I checked /etc/passwd, shadow, group, gshadow, nsswitch.conf, all files were there, all had proper permissions (as far as I know) and all seemed intact and contained what they should. None of my pam files look like they were mangled, but it is just not recognizing userIDs. Even when I boot up regularly into level 3, processes like SSH say "error, unrecognized user ssh" or something like that.I've checked everything I could think of, nothing makes sense to me. I was going to try to run yum update, hoping that updating everything would fix it, but I can't get the network working in single user mode, and I can't login on anything highger. I tried attaching the hard drive (it's external) to my desktop, chrooting, and running yum update, but my server is running i686, my desktop is running x86_64. When I tried updating, it tried to install a slew of 64 bit rpms.

Usually I get a login prompt on Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6], but now I just see a blinking cursor in all of them, along with some boot messages in the first virtual terminal.
Code:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.6
init: bootchart main process (462) terminated with status 2
init: bootchart post-stop process (474) terminated with status 127
/dev/sda2: clean, (integer)/(integer) files, (integer)/(integer) blocks
init: ureadahead-other main process (870) terminated with status 4
What's even weirder about this is that I uninstalled bootchart a few months ago. Whether that's related or not is beyond me, but the virtual terminals did stop working somewhere around that time. I solved this by reverting to my original /etc/network/interfaces file. Without the loopback "lo" device, the runlevel was never set, and virtual terminals never loaded.
This should be somewhere in the interfaces file:
Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

I have a newly installed openSUSE 11.4 (several reinstalls actually) which will not login to KDE (Plasma Desktop) from the KDM menu. When trying, the background image of KDM flickers a bit and I can see a hint of the bottom panel contours before it disappears again and only the KDM background image is shown. I have the right click menu working and also I can see started applications when alt+tabbing as white squares on the screen but no plasma desktop appears. It's as if the KDM background image blocks the desktop behind it.
If I switch to a console and init 3, log in as root and then run startx...the KDE Plasma Desktop loads and works brilliantly, but I cannot do this as a non root user.Logging in to IceVM from KDM works as a normal user.I figured this could be some kind of permissions issue so I tried creating a new user but I had no luck with that either. Does someone have any tips on how to solve this problem or a way to troubleshoot it?

Talk about being thrown in at the deep end! I am not used to linux systems but I have inherited a linux based internet setup that I need to take care of.Two machines (both have centOS 5) are networked and one is accessing the /home directory so people can log onto their personal home folder. The log in screen on the second machine usually just requires the individual to input their username and password and it automatically accesses their folder on the other machine. At the moment it doesnt and comes back with an error saying that the session lasted less than 10 seconds. Looking at the error message it is saying that the profile was not found and couldnt create per-user gnome configuration directory.
I am able to log in to the local root user on the machine and I can see the networked drive and even access the home directory.looking thru the network setting I see that the other machine seems to be acting as a samba server?? and is connected with SFTP?Any idea how to fix this problem as I have a load of guys sharing 1 PC for internet access in the middle of the atlantic Ocean on a ship!

How do I go about troubleshooting this?'m in Windows XP (which I like a lot better than Ubuntu, because it actually works) but all my files and work are on my Linux partition.
