Ubuntu :: Notification Icons Have Shrunk To One Pixel On Upgrade To 11.04?
May 2, 2011
I've upgraded (though at this point it doesn't quite seem like an upgrade ) to the Natty and have had a pretty good load of issues*.
I've gotten the system to a working state, and things seem ok, aside from this:
Screenshot.png
I've got a few applications (Skype, etc, etc) that are now squished into a single pixel in the notification area. I can right click on it and get the context menus from them, but that isn't exactly the greatest solution.
*I've had to switch over to the classic view, roll back my nvidia video drivers, and reinstall mozilla shredder/sunbird.

completed the first of my five pending Lucid upgrades a few hours ago, the upgrade progress went real smooth. SoI have been checking various apps to make sure they are working ok after the upgrade, and noticed that Amarok will not show its notification (tray) icon in the usual place after the upgrade. This is a pain because normally one would launch Amarok, select a playlist/album whatever, than close the window and skip tracks whatever using the tray icon. Did a bit of googling and found a bug in launchpad it's because Amarok draws a custom icon instead of passing a bitmap, or something, but cannot locate the bug again now. I then tested Rhythmbox and found the same issue.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my iBook and for some reason the Notification Area (2.30.2) just stopped working. Like it shows it's there, yet I'm not seeing any icons or anything show up. Which is the only way I get online from it at the moment. Right now I'm typing this from someone else's laptop.

I have the notification area displayed in my panel. Normally, it shows one speaker icon, one battery icon, and one wireless network icon. But now it occasionally shows 2 speakers and no wireless icon, or two batteries and no wireless icon. Sometimes rebooting fixes it. But it seems to be random. This used to work fine, and I can't figure out what I did to mess with it.

haven't seen this in years since I'm using Ubuntu, but might probably be just a single step to get it back and running.I have a notebook with Ubuntu 10.10 newly installed and since some days, there are no more icons in the notification area. Before it stopped working, I had to do a hard shutdown because the system hung. For now, i.e. when I go to a terminal and enter
Code:
nm-applet
I'll receive
[code]...

This happened upon boot-up this morning. Two volume control iconspeared in the notification area. One volume control icon is the real thing, the other appears to overwrite the network manager icon, which isn't showing up at all. If I left click on the "dummy" icon, it does nothing. If I right click and select About, it describes itself as the notification area, the same as if I right click on the little = handle to the left of the notification area. Ubuntu 9.10, system up-to-date.

At the left of the Fusion Icon (see the attachment) there is a small green dot. That is the icon for Skype. How do I make it so that all the icon is shown? Every time I try to move the three small lines to the left (after unlocking of course) hoping to let Skype icon show, I move the Fusion Icon and nothing changes.

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and after an update 2 days ago, I have noticed that the icons in the notification area get pushed off screen. For example, if I open up a site in Firefox with a long title, the icons will be pushed away by the title and will not appear in the correct areas until I logout and back in. Also, if I use gnome-panel everything seems to be well but when the gnome panel is not displayed then the same problem is there.

I enjoy the convenience and the simplicity of the mail and chat icons in the GNOME notification bar. But I am not sure I like Empathy; and I certainly prefer Thunderbird to Evolution. Can I use the mail icon to launch Thunderbird, and to be notified of new messages from Thunderbird? Likewise, can I use the mail and chat icons to control and to receive notifications from another IM program like Pidgin?

as you can see, most icons are in the notification area, but skype and any programs with icons opened after appear always on top in the top left corner.
I've tried moving things about to no avail

If I have a panel larger than standard size, the notification icons scale accordingly but the indicators stay the same size so it looks pretty rubbish. I would like the notification icons to stay the same size. How can I fix it?

Ubuntu has recently starting misplacing my wireless icon in the notification bar. Normally I would see four icons - power, bluetooth, wireless and volume. Recently, the wirelress icon has disappeared and been replaced by another icon - right now its the battery icon; yesterday it was the volume icon (i.e. I have 2 battery and zero wireless icons right now).
removing/replacing the notification area works until I reboot.I'd prefer a permanent fix.

Have a piece of software I have to use for work, which I'd expect to minimise down to the icon notification area. The Linux version doesn't, but running the MS version via WINE it does this.I'm using Fedora 10 with Gnome desktop, the software is an enhanced chat client that is linked to the phone system called MXIE.It isn't really make r break, but I'd really like to be able to resolve it. Is there anything I could be doing to fix this? Or is it something that is in the rpm that I've installed? As an aside,n't know it it's important, but the Linux version had no icon, and I have to manually add this to my main menu icon list.

I did all the fsck, resize2fs, lvresize, pvresive, parted, etc. stuff and was very careful about what I was doing, but clearly wasn't careful enough. I did backup lv_root to another drive with fsarchiver before I buggered things up, but I can't restore it because, well... I don't know! At this point I'd really just like to wipe the drive I messed up except for /boot and start over but I don't know how to do that when the system seems to think the drive is mounted when it ISN'T.Here's some info:- device is /dev/sdb with sdb1 as /boot and sdb2 a lvm2 volume group containing lv_root and lv_swap -- it was a default Fedora 11 installation that used up the whole drive- i did nothing to /boot and it seems to be fine, grub loads, choosing Fedora 11 shows the logo but quickly becomes a black screen, choosing Fedora 15 Live USB that I originally added from Fedora 11 works just fine (currently trying to fix things from Fedora 15)- i deleted and recreated lv_swap and it still shows up in /dev/vg_box- i shrunk lv_root and the filesystem is within the right size of the lv, which is within the right size of the pv, which is within the right size of the partition, which i made sure i used the right sectors, but lv_root does not show up in /dev/vg_box.
- lvscan says both lv_swap and lv_root are active but lvdisplay says lv_root is "NOT available"- system thinks /dev/sdb2 is mounted even though it ISN'T and can't seem to do ANYTHING to it because of thislvchange -ay /dev/vg_box gives:
Code:
device-mapper: resume ioctl failed: Invalid argument
Unable to resume vg_box-lv_root (253:2)
[code]....

I'm running a system where we had a 62 TB XFS filesystem running on top of a LVM2 logical volumes (which in turn is comprised of 5 PVs, each of which is a external 16 bay RAID). Well, this weekend there were some I/O errors on the filesystem. I rebooted and then ran xfs_repair. The filesystem looked ok, but then I noticed using df, that it was only reporting 51 TB!
I looked at pvdisplay and also noticed the entry for one of the PVs is as follows:
Please note where it says that 12.00 TB is 'not usable'. I don't know what precisely is meant by 'not usable'. I looked back and it looks like it's been this way before the problems this weekend, but it is very suspicious.
I really have no idea as to how to proceed. I've never seen anything like this before. lvdisplay says the volume is 61.85 TB. parted says the filesystem on top of this volume is 68.0 TB. xfs_info says the volume is 51 TB, which is what df -h is also saying.
The system is Centos 5.x (not sure which version, but the kernel is 2.6.18-128.1.14.el5). Hardware is a Dell Poweredge 2950 with an LSI fusion SAS card, which is connected to a SecurStor ES RAID 16 bay unit w/ 4 additional JBODs.

I downloaded a file that was 40mb compressed and was almost 700mb when fully extracted. It was inside a .rar file that in turn was inside another .rar file. How can this be done in Ubuntu? Can this also be done with .zip and .7z files?

I am running 10.04 Lucid on a Toshiba Satellite A105. The onboard video is an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950. The issue is that when I connect it to my Panasonic widescreen TV (laptop is widescreen as well) the display is shrunk and has a lot of unused space on the sides/top/bottom. So like, if I wanna watch something from Hulu, I plug in the S-Video, and I can watch on the TV, but it's not using all the screen available... I have not found a way to resize the output so it fills the screen.

I'm on Ubuntu (crunchbang actually) 9.04, and I've ventured to the world of the tiling WMs. Specifically, Awesome. I used 2.3.4 for quite a while, but have recently upgraded to 3.4.1. I've managed to get the vicious widgets working to display network, cpu, mem, etc., but the one thing that is driving me crazy is the statusbar icons.
to avoid the tl,dr;
Is there anyway to turn off the program icons in the status bar for the open programs? i.e. terminal, firefox, etc. I' ve googled as well as I can with no luck, and the awesome wiki for this seems to be outdated, as its suggestion bricks my awesome config.

When I log into the standard netbook environment (not the one called 2D) I get a blank desktop with blank (yet active) bars across the top and on the left of the screen. Mousing over the invisible icons on the left opens empty text boxes of varying sizes showing how long the name of the application is... I can open the applications by clicking blindly on that bar. The bar across the top is also active, I can open the menues by clicking in the right corner and moving the mouse until the one I want is open.
I have tried removing and reinstalling Unity as well as installing and removing fglrx. I posted originally in the following thread until I realised the OP there was describing a very different problem:

I am using slackware-current 32bit version. After upgrading from kde 4.2.4 to 4.3.4 (using slackpkg), all my K-menu icons were missing.
There are also no icons in task managers for all kde-based applications like konsole, dolphin etc.. But for non-kde application like firefox, wicd and xmms, the icons show up in task manager. I have tried reinstalling kdebase, kdebase-runtime and kde-userspace with no luck.

I've (almost successfully) upgraded my 64-current.
1. It used to be or is? 64-current multilib, however, before the upgrade I commented out any blacklisted packages in slackpkg's blacklist file (including aaa_eflibs)
slackpkg update, install-new, upgrade-all, clean system (removed all the packages that were specified in changelogs.txt as removed)
When started X two things were wrong.
1. XFCE icons disappeared
2. The mouse pointer was going crazy
2. I fixed it by following Eric's advice and created a file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-mouse.conf where I put the Input section from my xorg.conf
I'm still at loss when it comes to the icons.
btw, I've reinstalled my nvidia binary blob, somehow it doesn't seem to see it. Does the new Xorg use xorg.conf anymore?

The upgrade appeared to go smoothly, but now logging in to a normal session just gives me a desktop wallpaper and nothing else.If I log into Gnome-Failsafe then I get a panel and desktop icons back, but still no window managerI have to initiate metacity manually.Wondered if it was something to do with my messy personalisation settings, but a new test account I created has the same problem.

I've been running Ubuntu on one of my old notebooks (Acer Aspire 5516) for the past two years. My problem started when I tried to upgrade to 11.04 64 bit. The installation seemed to go fine, but when I restarted to finish, after I would log in all I would see is the background with no menus or anything. I tried doing a fresh install and seeing if that helped, but it didn't. I had to downgrade back to 10.10. Does anyone know if 11.04 works at all on the Acer Aspire 5516 or a similar model? Even at 32 bit?

I would like to ask whether somebody has had the similar experience after KDE 4.4 upgrade.
1. From the attached picture you can see that an icon for xine has a different size. When I change it manually and align the icon, it has previous status after the restart. If I delete that icon and recreate it again, it's smaller than other icons. Icon size for desktop is set up to 32, Desktop Activity.
2. Minimizing/maximizing e.g. Firefox breaks all icons in task bar. I am able to refresh only Firefox/Thunderbird icons.
What can cause these issues? Maybe:
1. my nouveau driver
2. bugs in KDE 4.4.
3. my theme

I recently upgraded from Lucid to Maverick... I did not notice this earlier but the icon theme (for example, in the nautilus toolbar) is not the same as ambience theme. Although I chose all the defaults for ambience theme by going to 'System' > 'Preferences' > 'Appearance'. I think the current icons I have are remnants from some previous installations. How do I remove them and get to the ambiance default theme?

I have a server that was happily running Lenny. Last reboot was over 100 days ago. So I decided to fix it and install Squeeze.the upgrade went well, booted into grub. (with the grub2 test menus). When I login using the console, I get the nice GUI login, and something looks like the graphics world is being setup. The screen goes to a pretty light blue background. But there are no icons, no toolbars, no windows.I could believe something in the Xconfig is broken, say it thinks I have a much larger screen, and all the icons are off the edges. But that is only a guess.
