I installed KDE on my ubuntu 9.04. I was using kde for some time. Then later on I switched it back to gnome. I found that the shutdown button on the right top of the gnome panel was missing. How to restore it back? and has my gnome panel crashed?

sudo shutdown -h from terminal
I can shutdown using powerbutton on case. I can't use the applet indicator powerbutton in root account, but, I can use the command under "System-->-Shutdown" in root account, but I don't see "System-->-Shutdown" in users account. Is there a way to add it ? I installed Debian 6.0 Squeeze on my Acer Aspire 3620 Laptop it works just fine and has the same Gnome Desktop. The only thing different is that there is no powerbutton available thru Gnome applets, only the command on menu under" Sytem-->-Shutdown", which I'm fine with on this machine.
These are the things I tried on emachine T-1221
I tried "acpi=force"
I tried "noacpi"
I tried "noacpi nolapic"
I read the bug reports it stated that on live-cd there was only suspend and hibernate. There is no shutdown or reboot. I tried: "#start acpi", it closed with errors. It said that Ubuntu uses upstart. Is there a script which you can add to power button to add the shutdown.? Really I don't necessarily need powerbutton, I think the work around would be adding the command to "System-->-Menu.
I moved things around a bit and I added a top panel to make my lubuntu be more what I'm use to with gnome but I deleted the bottom panel and now I can't find a way to add a shutdown button to the panel..
View 2 Replies View Relatedtechnically, this is UNR with lxde installed after extended UNR use. i like being able to hit my power button in gnome, and getting a message asking what you want to do, or cancel if needed. well, in lxde, the shutdown button brings up a similar message. could i map the power button to show that popup in lxde?

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 I uninstalled empathy (im using skype). The empathy menu in the evolution indicator was gone after that.I also uninstalled gwibber. But the gwibber status indicator remains within the about-me panel... Uninstalling the gwibber package also removes the me-menu which I want to keep actually. Especially the shutdown/restart... part of it. See attachment.I know there is a shutdown panel-app...but its butt-ugly and it doesnt allow to logon/off.
In another thread I read that the gwibber status shouldnt be there if no account for it is configured... which it is not... I do use ubuntu-one though which is in the same menu... I saw that this issue was addressed at some bug report before, but not fixed yet...
Does anybody know a good workaround to get rid of the gwibber status in the panel while keeping the about me and the shutdown button?

View 9 Replies View Relatedi was so happy using the window buttons applet in gnome panel. it was working fine in maximize window , now suddenly i find the close button has vanished i tried to remove and re install, changed theme and all the jugglery within my limits... have absolutely no idea what went wrong, any clue ? to get back the "CLOSE" button ? its funny with just the minimize and restore button visible in maximised mode... its the close button i use most in maximise mode
View 1 Replies View RelatedI did a live upgrade from 11.3 KDE and observe a following issue.When I press the shutdown button on the laptop it initiates the shutdown and shuts down fine but after a significant delay of time (something like 30 seconds). When I click the shutdown button in KDE it initiates the shutdown instantly. This was not the case in 11.3 where the shutdown worked the same regardless of the method that triggered it

If I:
1. Add drawer(s) on the gnome panel
2. add items to one or more of those drawers
3. reboot then:
1. all empty drawers can operate normally
2. drawers that have stuff in it cannot be opened.
Is it possible to install Gnome-panel in Xfce? I'd like to completely replace xfce-panel with gnome-panel. It is possible the other way round so maybe this way too?

if i go logoff the shutdown button is at the bottom but doesnt work.
I can shutdown in the terminal tho.
How can i fix this (put the buttons back)?
My problem is I can't shutdown directly from kde, I can only log out to gdm. How can I fix this?

A few days ago I updated to 8.04.4 on both and since then when I click on the red Shutdown button and then click on 'Shutdown' it just logs me out. Anyone have this happen to them after the update? For some strange reason, the lockscreen... shutdown button has suddenly disappeared from the top right of my wife's desktop - it's a circle with a short vertical line at the top. I've found a Shut Down button via 'Add to Panel', but it doesn't have quite the same functionality, e.g. it doesn't support switching to another user. Any idea how to get the lost button back?

View 6 Replies View RelatedRegarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.
How I can set that my left panel fit the top edge of the screen (instead of top panel)?

When I press the power button, I see a dialogue box which asks for confirmation and if nothing is confirmed system automatically shuts down in 60 seconds.
