View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to upgrade the BIOS in a Dell Dimension 4300. I found the latest BIOS on the dell support site: version A06. The currently installed BIOS is A02.I installed a 2.0 GHz Celeron -128kb L2, 400Mhz fsb. I looked it up and the mobo supports any 400 Mhz, socket 478 processor. The current BIOS shows the cpu as 00 Mhz, 256k. I read somewhere that the BIOS doesn't have the ability to display "128 kb". The BIOS setup is functioning fine other than this and it ran PartedMagic (live CD).
But it won't boot the floppy with the BIOS upgrade. I've tried 9 different floppy drives that were pulled from working systems. The green LED on the floppy drives all lit up. I tried turning the IDE channels to OFF. I tried changing the boot order. I tried unplugging the IDE cables from the mobo. I tried hitting F12 to bring up the boot selection screen and then pressing "2." to boot to floppy. I tried multiple combinations of these
I'm an experienced Linux developer who has run into a little problem. I'm using a National Instruments 8170 chassis, among the normal ports, it has a FDD and USB port but this model does not allow booting from a USB CDROM ( I tried a BIOS update, that didn't help either ). I made this cool customized 550MB FC8 LiveCD wtih X, GCC, various apps, etc. and a kernel 2.6.30 & 2.6.18 boot floppy disk with all the needed drivers. The floppy boots to a shell with all the busybox utils, etc. and detects the USB CDROM media and all its files.
My Question is: How do I get the kernel and initrd on the Live CD to start or boot after booting from the Floppy disk ?, I mean, I want to load linux again but this time from the CD after booting linux from floppy, if that makes sense. I'm just using the floppy to boot and recognize the USB CDROM. This can be done with MSDOS and loadlin but loadlin has an issue(it hangs) with the newer kernels (2.6.18 and greater). I searched for the loadlin source code to port it to linux but was unable to find it on the net.
I have just installed SUSE 11.3, how do I get a floppy icon on the desktop that I can right click on to mount.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIs there something weird about the FLOPPY DRIVE on F12? Nothing associated with it works & I can't get an icon for it. Also the FLOPPY FORMATTER no longer works. (mine is an internal drive)- I had some really miner quirks with it in 10 but it worked. I had some workaround launchers that I used until an upgrade semi-fixed it. (It would give a false error that it couldn't run but did. I just ignored it.)
I tried to edit FSTAB to cure a problem of my BACKUP drive showing up twice*** so while I was in there I added the stuff for the floppy & it still doesn't work. If I try to mount it manually, I get the error that /dev/fd0 doesn't exist.I tried to find some info on it & it SEEMS that there MAY be a bug but I'm not sure as the info is a bit confusing as to just what version & such they are talking about. And there was also the problem that all the stuff seemed to be OLD or not related to my problem.I why I quite hacking at my system, is that all my workaround launchers & the formatter say that there are GNOME things missing & they can't run. So I figure that there is something missing or screwy already & that I'd better ask BEFORE I make things worse or actually break something. With the fact that floppies are about gone, it's getting to be not that big of a deal but I still find myself having to use them for repair purposes (albeit, not as much) & it gets to be a bit of a pain to fire up M$ just to do something like this.
*** It appears that the one in FSTAB was the one I needed, so where would the OTHER one be so I can get rid of it? Or at least make it auto mount.
I am trying to write a floppy boot image to my floppy drive (as root):
Code:

I am having a Promise TX4650 RAID controller & trying to create a driver floppy for installing the drivers. Also am using RHEL 5, I can create the driver floppy, but when I type "mount /dev/fd0 /media/floppy" I get error: "mount: mount point /media/floppy does not exist".Can I get the files in a format other than the ext2 floppy image, so that we do not need to use a floppy drive? There is a readme file inside the driver archive & you can use that as a reference.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAnybody knows how can I mount and unmount a floppy within the desktop and/or dolphin filemanager in KDE 4.1? If I run dolphin I can see a floppy icon on the left, clicking on it seems to activate a reading of the floppy, then I have to go to /media folder and click on /disk folder to display the floppy files, then if a right click on the floppy on dolphin the only option I get is to hide the floppy shortcut, there is no option for unmount the floppy. I tried to make a desktop shortcut to floppy by right clicking on the desktop folder and selecting new device floppy and entering /dev/fd0 on device location, and clicking okay. Even that does not have the unmount command when I right click on the desktop shortcut, so the floppy gets stock in mount state.
also I dont see an applet or the so called plasmanoid when I click on the plasma icon on the right of the task bar and click add widget, on kde 3.5 I have the media applet on the task bar, it worked like a charm, I give a 1000 thanks to the developer of the media applet.
Any ideas on how to mount and unmount my floppy? It is a standard internal floppy, which is connected to the standard floppy controller on the motherboard. The only way to have access to it is logging into kde 3.5 and have the media applet/widget in the taskbar, and then works like a charm, I can mount it or unmount it any time. But I would like to try the new Version 4.1.3 (KDE 4.1.3) "release 72.4" that I'm running. I believe this is the latest from the opensuse 11.1 KDE 4 STABLE repository, so I know I have the latest patches for KDE 4.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to make a live-USB containing among others both Ubuntu desktop i386 and Ubuntu desktop AMD64. How do I go about this? I tried using unetbootin, first adding i386 and then amd64, but that failed. My computer with an athlon II did manage to boot, and showed it had booted into the 64-bit version (ram shown was 3.9 GB, i386 goes to about 2.7 I think), my wife's computer with a pentium 4 did not manage to boot, got to a black screen. I think this is because casper has issues, being overwritten (I'd seen something to that effect somewhere), and thus only the latest version added being booted (in this case amd 64).
I'm under the impression that the startup disc creator included won't help, nor won't the multicd.sh script, so how do I circumvent the issues?
When I customize the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS live CD, what files do I need to change in order to add another launcher to the live user's desktop?
View 1 Replies View Relatedrecently I have been trying to create the perfect custom ubuntu .iso to write to a usb drive so i could carry around a live cd version of my current desktop operating system. I have 2 problems...
1: using various tools like Remastersys, Ubuntu Customization Kit, and Ubuntu's own LiveCDCustomization tutorial I have managed to install most of the packages that I want.... Truecrypt is not in the repos and i would very much like it on my custom live cd. while in chroot i tried using wget to download it then extract and install it, but i got a 404 error so it did not seem to be connecting to the place to download it. is there a workaround to getting truecrypt to install into my extracted squashfs? would it be possible to download the packages to my desktop then copy them over to my chroot squashfs to be installed?
2: I have not been able to customize the default appearance of the desktop environment like the background, icons, colors, window border, panels, applets, and so on.... Ubuntu's tutorial states that I need to edit .xmls in /etc/gconf but i do not understand how to edit those to get what I want. LiveCD creates a new user with default settings everytime it is started so its a matter of editing the files that control the settings of a new user.
I have just been trying to fix a friends comp, they had Windows crash, and it wouldn't reinstall properly. So I thought I'd put Ubuntu 10:04 on it instead. I burnt the CD today from an ISO that I've used perfectly fine in the past. When I finally got it to boot into the trial desktop. The install button on the desktop wouldn't work. Everything else that I tried to run would run fine. is there some way that I can run it from the terminal or could this indicate a fault in the Live CD?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'd like to do a live video streaming session later in the week (ie - people see what I do on the desktop and hear me yap in the mic). Can anyone recommend a reliable setup to do this? Most sites require some Flash thing which isn't available on Ubuntu. I tried webcamstudio a while back and that seems to have a huge (5s+ delay).
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm attempting to install Ubuntu on my girlfriend's old desktop. Her gateway laptop's motherboard just died on her, and until we can figure out a real solution she's using this old desktop that was running Windows XP. It was her parent's and it's an eMachine. So, meh. It's whatever.
I have an Ubuntu disc from Canonical and one from burning the .iso image. I've been fighting with it all evening trying to just get the thing to boot. It starts up, shows a purple screen with an Ubuntu logo on the bottom. If I don't hit Enter it will go into a crazy cycle of black screen command line things. It says various errors, but moves too fast for me to see anything that is actually happening. However, if I do hit Enter it takes me to the "Try Ubuntu without installing, etc." screen.
No matter what I hit from the selection, it goes to the black screen with random command line entries floating about. Various error, various actions being done. If I hit to run as Live CD or Install it, it will eventually stop and say "Welcome to Ubuntu! *insert website address here*" and give me the chance to type in commands.
ONCE during the power on/power off cycles of me fighting did the Live CD actually run. It ran nicely, and I clicked the icon to install Ubuntu and it got to 49% complete and said there was an error with the disc. I installed Ubuntu on my desktop last week with the same disc flawlessly. It ran with the real Ubuntu disc, the burnt ones do nothing.
I could tell you system specs but Windows was erased during the Live CD stint and there are no stickers on the front to tell you. But I can crack it open and look if needed.
Cd is not booting properly . . only option for choosing installation option comes .. when entered "demo" or "install ubuntu " only a black screen comes with only a "_" blinking ..
I waited for half hour and still that cursor not stopping blinking ..And I have tried install with windows but when rebooted with ubuntu same thing happens . Also tried in VirtualBox and It works properly in it.
When I try to boot from the Live CD of Ubuntu 10.10, I end up with a whitish corrupt screen, which should be the 'Desktop'. The CD is good and works on other PC's. I have tried two other graphics cards with the same result. It is therefore impossible even to install it. I have installed many other versions without problems. This PC works perfectly with Windows XPVistaWindows 7 and other Ubuntu versions.
