Ubuntu :: Terminal Becomes Broke Just Gets > Prompt?
Apr 27, 2010
I was using ffmpeg and mencoder making a video of some jpgs of my grandson when something weird happened.I entered a chmod command and then all I got was ">" on the left side of the terminal.I closed the terminal and reopened it and got back to where I was at and ended up with the same thing.I can not enter exit or anything else. I just have to close it.Rebooting didn't even help it. Now I cannot enter other commands like an ffmpeg command.I was able to cd to where I wanted to go, but when I got there and tried about any command I ended up with a ">" prompt.

It appears to me that with the default .bashrc the user, computer, and working directory are shown in the title. If so, I see no need for that info in the prompt (space waster).
If this is always true, how do I change my prompt to simply "$" and the root prompt to simply "#"?

I program in C with geany and two terminals open; one to compile and one to test the compiled program. The thing is that it's hard to the eyes to keep track of the messages and such when the terminal prompt is too long:
Code:
manos@manos-desktop:/media/Iomega1TB/Documents/UNI/Datastrukturer och Algoritmer/labbar/lab1$
How can I change that to something minimal? I don't want a permanent solution as all other times I want to be aware of the current path.

I can boot up ubuntu but it's just showing the default background, the login prompt won't come up. What do I do? Startx doesn't work in the terminal (ctrl-alt F1), it gives an error. I can log in as root (recovery mode) and startx works and the desktop comes up though.

If u are usibg debaian or its derivative we can tweak out the terminal prompt. For example:
Quote:
If you are interested in tweaking. open up the .bashrc file in your home directory and add these lines
Quote:
replace this with :-) or any other thingy u can think of. 34 represents colour, in our case it is red. The result will be
Quote:
This was seen in a book i read. if u have any doubt at all please post. i'm stll thinking of how i can remove the line saying "ubuntu@ubuntu" and just have "~$" at the prompt.

To flesh out my *nix capability, I create new identities and give them the functionality that I liked in previous ones. I've added the "open terminal here" script, which I find invaluable. Now I want to change the prompt. This is what the terminal does right now:
ITo run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.
elliot@dan:/media/KINGSTON$
- Where do I go to shorten the prompt dramatically? I can't really think of a situation where a shorter prompt isn't better or color matters.
- How do I adios the 2 sentences that want to appear every time I open this terminal? I'm aware what sudo does.
- Instead, I would like the equivalent of a pwd command. Where would I put that?
- How do I get the output of this terminal to be simultaneously saved in a file. I do so much copying and pasting out of these terminals that I'm looking for easier ways to do it.

I'm using Nomachine NX client for Windows to remotely connect to my Ubuntu.Every now and then I experience a strange phenomena: the text in the prompt of all open terminal windows becomes black, so it can't be viewed over the black background. Typed commands are also black, but the results are in normal colors. So I can run stuff, but can't see what I'm typing...After I close all open terminal windows and start a new terminal window, everything goes back to normal.

I just got a Tablet PC, and I installed Ubuntu on it. But, problem is, I tried to install 10.10, and it would install properly, but it wouldn't load, just brought up the GRUB loader with a terminal prompt. I ended up having to install 7.04, and it works great. but I'd like to upgrade it.

I've created a brand new CentOS 5.4 (Final) 64bit machine AMI on Amazon EC2. This was based off an existing image. I was able to follow the wiki to add NX server. I am using WIN XP desktop for NX client.
I can connect to the EC2 machine and get the GNOME desktop fine. I see the usual CentOS desktop and poke around.
Q/Problem:
I expected to open the Terminal window and get a shell prompt to su into root user (I need to be root to install some software that needs GUI). I do not want to install this from my plain SSH connection to EC2 (hence the NX server etc.).
When I open the Terminal window, all I get is the NX>105 prompt. I need to get to a shell prompt so I can su into root. For life of me, I cannot get around this prompt (I looked at NX documentation too). Note that this is a prompt NOT on client but on the remote machine. I do not need this as I'm already authenticated and logged in to remote GNOME desktop.
Obviously the TERMINAL is running some NX start up script (I've no idea which one). If there is some other way to sudo into root?

I'm running Red Hat Linux 5.4 on HP DL580 server with 16 processors and 64 GB of RAM. I'm connecting to the server remotely through SSH. after entering the password, it takes time to return the command line, if I click ctrl+c during this time, I'll have the command line prompt but not the correct bash prompt (I have to run bash to pass to my correct prompt).I tried to install Apache on the server, ./configure took 4 hours to finish instead of 1 or two minutes, Oracle installation same behavior. Server Disks are mirrored using RAID controller.

I just downloaded the most recent version of the updates for Ubuntu 9.10 and for the 4th or 5th time since I've used 9.10 it's broken 9.10 so I can't boot. Usually after breaking it it just hangs at the screen between the big white ubuntu O and the next with the progress bar, this time after the big white O I get random multicolored characters at the top of the screen and the computer hangs with no activity, no hdd lights or anything. Unless anyone has any suggestions I'm just not going to use Ubuntu, at least until 10.04 is available this is really getting old.

I'm running 9.10 and it's been great for me, until a few days ago. I added some PPAs, and they seem to have produced some conflicts that I don't know how to fix. I added PPAs for Midori, Webkit, Epiphany, Mozilla (for Firefox 3.7 and Thunderbird 3), and Banshee. Now I can't open Midori, Epiphany or (strangely) the Ubuntu Software Center.

This was a bizarre problem with my systems bios confusing my usb wireless adapter and hard drive with one another! The solution was to unplug the adapter and reboot. I have been running a dual boot system with xp pro on one hard drive and Ubuntu 9.10 on a second hard drive, both are sata drives. I have been using this system for a few months and have been happy with it. A few days ago I decided to try to put Ubuntu 9.10 on a bootable usb, I followed the directions from help, but when I restarted my computer I could not boot from the usb device or boot from grub2. I read the grub2 documentation and tried all 3 methods of reinstalling grub from the live cd with no success. I then decided to install Lucid beta1 to a small partition on the second hard drive, when I rebooted I had grub 1.98 which recognized all three operating systems. This worked for a couple of days then again I got the error saying that the disk does not exist. I tried reinstalling grub using different methods, I even tried to use the fixmbr command on the xp disk, still no luck, now all I can do is use the live cd.

I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) for some time now as the OS for a home Nasbox, along with webmin. Its been great, and I've been able to SSH into the box without any issues in the past.Last night, I ran apt-get update and apt-get upgrade to bring my system more current.
Now, I can't seem to log into SSH any longer, and get a "Connection failed, Windows error 10061" error.I'm going to upgrade the OS to 11 as well in hopes things fix themselves.

I am having an issue with phpMyAdmin on my Xubuntu machine. I installed a few updates today and now my phpMyAdmin web interface site is not loading on the server. This is a local server running in my office. It appears that the page tries to load, but no output is delivered to the screen.
Taking a closer look at my updates, it looks like the following changes were made (along with some upgrades to Firefox):
When I use the 'Force Version....' command, I am given only two options the '4.8' version that I have now (the broken one) and a flat '4' version with no .7. Also, the force version didn't seem to do anything. I tried to Force a version and then mark a package for reinstall. When I did this Synaptic informed me that it was simply going to reinstall the 4.8 version.
What I would like to do is to revert to the 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.7 version of all of these files and then lock the version using Synaptic, to prevent this issue from recurring.
I am not afraid of heading to the command line either.
System Information:
32-Bit Xubuntu 10.04 LTS install
Athlon 3800+
2GB Ram

I have upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04. I have been using wmii as window manager under ubuntu for years. After the upgrade it's entirely broken.
The metakey is not working anymore, I cannot do anything. The key itself works fine in other environments so is's no hardware issue. After several attempts I completely uninstalled wmii, removed all relevant folders in home and /etc/X11 and reinstalled wmii from the ubuntu repositories.
This fresh install does not work. It starts a strange looking wmii without any key responding to my actions. I copied my old wmiirc to ~/.wmii. When i log in I see my individualized wmii but the metakey is not working and i cannot do anything, like opening a shell.
Edit: A change to "MODKEY=ALT" in wmiirc does not change anything.

I installed 11.04 from disc for a clean install on my dual boot vsta/ubuntu desktop.I was so frustrated that i had no wifi in 11.04 that i got out my 10.04 disk and triple booted that into the mix.Still no wifi (axcept in Vista) however if i unplug my usb wifi device and replug it in while in10.04 i will get the 'connection established' info box yet when i try to open Firefox i get the 'no internet connection or check firewall setting' drop down box.My wifi was working in 10.04 previous to 11.04 install.Note the unplug/replug usb does not work at all in 11.04.Also its strange that my wifi icon in 10.04 went from the bar graph style to the radiating arch style since the reinstall, even though i used the same install disc as pre 11.04

To start from the beginning, I realised that I have no audio, so I tried a couple of fixes that I found online. Upon rebooting, all my graphics were very choppy (moving windows, scrolling etc). The sound is working though. I dont understand how fixing sound can mess with the graphics but hey it isnt working and thats what matters.I have an installer for the ATI drivers downloaded from ati.amd.com. when I had a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and installed these drivers everything worked 100% without any problems. Running the installer now doesnt seem to work. The log in /usr/share/ati/fglrx-install.log reports:
