Ubuntu :: New Lucid Install Wont Allow File Downloads
Sep 26, 2010
No matter what site I try to get a file from, when trying to download - let's say - a .pdf file, I get a dialog box that tells me that the file could not be saved,"because the source file could not be read. Try again later, or contact the server administrator." This is on my laptop only, a clean install of Lucid Lynx, the files download fine on either of my desktop machines, each an earlier Ubuntu release. I'm using Firefox and cannot try another browser since I'm unable to download one. Can't seem to find anything relevant in the log files. What could be happening?
Last night I was using Ubuntu just downloading music with Limewire and it was all working fine until I clicked on a a song to download and a message popped up saying something like "This computer doesn't have a file for Limewire downloads", I am not exactly sure on how it said it but it had something to do with the File System. Since it was so late I just decided to leave it like that and deal with it in the morning.
I woke up and when I started Ubuntu and it says "File System not found", and something about pressing Control-D. Sorry for the lack of info I just don't remember exactly what it said, but like I mentioned above it has something to do with the File System that apparently isnt working. I decided to re-install Ubuntu and it worked great, I am using ubuntu right now but it doesn't have any of the setting and apps etc etc that I had on the other one.
When I restart the computer and the dual-boot menu comes up it has 2 types of ubuntu, this one that works and the other one that everytime I click on it it keeps showing me the "File System not found". Is there any way to fix my old version of Ubuntu 9.10? And if I cant then how can I delete the damaged version of Ubuntu so it doesn't come up in the Dual-Boot screen? And I also have Windows 7 on it, how can I delete that one also?
i can download but i cant run anything because there is no ar file path for ark. please dont tell me to download something to get the ar file path because if i download it i can't open it
I just installed virtualbox and installed windows xp on it. I need windows xp for compiling my Lazarus (Free Pascal Compiler) projects in it, so that something I program on ubuntu works on Windows too. Windows works correctly on the virtual machine, there is just one problem. How do i copy a file from ubuntu(for example from/home/user/downloads) into the C drive of windows(Windows is installed on the virtual machine)
i have a weird issue with my web server. every time i enter my domain name instead of processing my index file it downloads it. wth could be the problem first time this ever occurred. recently installed webmin.
I have a problem to get it to work. The installer seems to read the preseed-file alright, and some of the values defined in the preseed-file are taken into account. The questions regarding locale, keyboard layout and time zone are answered using the preseed-file, but in the user account creation-step the process goes wrong. The Full name-field is obtained from the preseed-file, but the login-name is generated by the installer and not read from the preseed. Also the password-fields are empty and not filled in. Also the script that I've defined with preseed/late_command is never run.
I tried searching the forums but no-one had exactly this kind of problem, so it makes me think that this has to be some trivial error I'm doing. Could someone take a look at these configs and see if there's something wrong with them? How should I continue resolving this?
I am running debian lenny running apache (latest) i am trying to make a webserver. i put the index.html file in my www folder. it shows up when i go to my site (localhost) i put an index.php file in my www folder and when i try to go to my site it Downloads the index.php file instead of showing it.
I trashed my Karmic Ubuntu install and installed Lucid (I had heard that the boot times were much reduced and I didn't see any improvement in my normal upgrade). I reinstalled Drupal but find that my installation of Apache does not run the scripts, but rather passes the php text file to the browser. IIRC when I installed it apt configured Apache correctly without me having to edit .htaccess or /etc/apache2/httpd.conf which makes me think that I am missing a key dependency.
Does anyone know of a check list to which I can refer to make sure that I've installed everything? My installation has Postgres instead of MySQL. Failing which, in the event that my memory is faulty, where can I find which changes need to be applied to the configuration files above?
I've got an old p3 with 11 ide hard drives strapped to it for storage and I decided to throw Ubuntu server on it because it's more lightweight than a standard ubuntu install, and given it's a pentium 3 with 128mb of ram, lightweight is good. I installed, through putty (ssh), the gnome gui - then learned that putty only does cli (i was thrilled), so I've spend the last hour trying to figure out how to enable remote desktop.
I don't mind reinstalling to do what is necessary. remote desktop to manage file downloads from my windows 7 machine(s) big list, i know. history: this thing is/was my media server. I had xp on it, sharing all drives and watching hd movies off it, but then xp decided it did't want to boot anymore so here we are. I'm thinking of just putting ubuntu 8.04/8.10 on it and through its wonderful gui enabling remote desktop and using realvnc/tightvnc to access it
I must be missing something. I have never had any trouble dl'ing the DVD's or Live CD's. Now they all dl to 99% and then stop. I started with my Win 7 box using Opera, then Seamonkey, then Seamonkey with Metalink agent then on an XP box using Opera then finally Ubuntu w/Firefox through vmware on the Win 7 box. I don't see any similar posts, is Cox just not letting them finish or am I missing some change that allowed me to complete them before & not now?
As I have had some problems using kpagager I've used file asociations to set yast as the default. When I download an rpm the yast icon bounces around for a while and then dies. I assume this means I need another set of yast launch instructions. Suppose I could download to a directory and set it as a repo but would rather just have it launch for rpms as it's quicker. 11.4 KDE 4.6.0
I have downloaded the jdk-6u24-linux-i586.bin and gone through following steps. nuwan@nuwan-laptop:~/Downloads$ sudo chmod +x jdk-6u24-linux-i586.bin nuwan@nuwan-laptop:~/Downloads$ ./jdk-6u24-linux-i586.bin It works fine on me. These commands create a folder jdk1.6.0_24 in Downloads directory.
My Question is this. If I want to install packages manually. What is the best way to do it. Where should I put artifacts which generates after executing above commands. Another question, If I use sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk where does these downloaded packages are installed. I mean location. I have been using Ubuntu 9.10
I just did a fresh install of 10.04 on my system and everything runs perfect and exremely smooth, however the update manager and firefox are taking forever to load (the progress meter reads something like 2d 17hr 23m), however the internet connection is very fast.the logs are all insanely clean with the fewest errors I've ever seen, so this shouldn't be too terribly difficult to solve. Also I seem to be having a problem with the font on Firefox, every fourth letter or so has a bright streak in it. Anyway, that might be related or not but my main concern right now is getting my download speed up to par?
I was able to install opensuse 11.2 wihtout problems from LiveCD. After installation I noticed there is a cross in Network Connection. But in Live CD it's not there. I opended Network Manager and setp up my DSL Pppoe connecton and it's working. Hope this behaviour is normal ?I am little confused regarding software update. In Yast control centre:
1. Software repositories I will not have to touch default is ok ? 2. Just select Online Update and all the updates will be taken care 3. Is there any settings to avoid unnecessary software downloads
Does the $ sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree command always downloads the latest flash player plugin?Does it install for all currently installed browsers? Because it seems like it does.
Am attempting to upgrade from Breezy to Lucid but not without a lot of problems The current brick wall is I cannot run a PHP file called from an HTM script.First I can run localhost/phpmyadmin and can access/modify my MySQL database.Second I can run localhost/test.php and see my PHP setup.Third I can run a local swf file successfully but it does fail when attempting to access processsData.php with "Can't access network" which was almost always caused by a PHP syntax error.I have run the php script through a PHP5 syntax checker with no error.Fourth I can run an htm script
I wan to mount a custom hardware's USB file system. I am using Lucid Lynx. When I used the command$ sudo mount -t usbfs none /proc/bus/usbThere was an error as there was no/proc/bus/usbI tried to put it in fstab entry so that /proc/bus/usb will be mounted at boot but no luck.
I need some restoring my Nautilus File Manager back to its original state. I tried installing Elementary Nautilus but for some reason it was not working for me, so I uninstalled it but have been having an issue with Nautilus looking like its former self. Now Nautilus doesn't display the "tree" on the left, there are no back/forward icons, and generally looking strange. Here's a picture to showcase my issue:

I would love to use Elementary Nautilus but can not get it as my default file manager. Since I can't do that I just want Nautilus (the one that comes shipped with Ubuntu) to look and act like it's supposed to.
I successfully installed ubuntu but I cant install its updates, heres the prob: dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/available' near line 19410 package 'initscripts': missing version
All I need to do is get my screen resolution to 1024x768, I can currently only get 800x600 and that's unacceptable for school. I created an xorg.conf file in Lucid and it does in fact refer to and use it. what led me to believe that is when I looked in the mirror and noticed smoke slowly rolling out of my ears! After replacing some of that smoke with a cigarette I decided to make this thread. As I said, I created the xorg.conf.new file with:
Code: sudo Xorg -configure from recovery mode. And then moved it to its proper place with:
And that nested it right where it needs to be. X does in fact use it as confirmed by my Xorg.0.log.
Now I have an xorg.conf file, but am quickly becoming overwhelmed with information as to what to do. I've tried to create mode lines with xrandr, which gave me new settings, but I was unable to use them. Obviously the EDID info. is not being read because there is no mention of clock speed, Vsync or Hsync in my Xorg.0.log either. I have tried many things and really don't have time to spend all day at my computer, at least not with this issue. I'm in school and have to focus primarily on that right now. I will give what info I know is relevant starting with my monitor specs:
Dynex DX-LCDTV19 vertical resolution: 720 p aspect ratio: 16:10 screen refresh rate: 60hz comb filter: 3D/YC digital
Does anyone know where I can find the complete VirtualBox .deb file for Lucid? That is the one that doesn't need an Internet connection to install VirtualBox.
I downloaded the .deb available from virtualbox.org but, when I copied it to a desktop I have without Internet connection I can't install it because it looks for a connection to the repositories.
I first noticed the disparity when I was moving some ISO files from Maverick to another partition. It was around 12-15 mb/s, where later I found Lucid to be around 30-50 mb/s.I then dropped into a VT and tried both from there, and discovered Maverick still much slower.thinking it may be the newer Nautilus, I re-booted and telinit 3, first using Maverick then Lucid.Lucid moved several gigabytes of data from one partition to another. It finished in "0m5.290s" where Maverick using the same computer and exact same data, moving to the exact same location "0m8.870s", Maverick being almost 60% slower. Not sure now where to look. Perhaps a newer library, or extra process being in use. Using telinit 3, I never loaded anything else. Is there any tools that can trace the moves.
There are a number of shares on the destination system; for the purposes of this thread I used D$ and F$ (corresponding to those partitions). These shares are mounted permanently via CIFS (entries in fstab) on the source system.Today I copied an ISO image of some 3.5 GB from source (S) to destination (D). md5sum on S gave a different checksum for the source ISO than that calculated by HashCheck Shell Extension for the destination ISO. I know some would argue that I shoud use the same md5sum programm for both images.
To circumvent that I 7zipped the ISO, verified it's integrity and copied that archive from S to D. Verification of the acrchive by the Win version of 7z failed. To see if it's a protocol problem I copied both ISO and archive of ISO to another D this time using sshfs (it's an Ubuntu server). Flawless copies. Then I copied both files to another Win-based server on the same network. Flawless copies.Mystified, I checked the partition's file system integrity (NTFS) where the errors occured. Minor inconsistencies (no errors according to chkdsk). So I copied both files again, once to another partition (D:) of the original D, once to that partition causing the error in the first place (F:).
(D:): archive corrupt, checksum okay (F:): this time around both okay.
What the hell can I do to nail down the problem?! I don't even know whether it's a problem of the source system or the destination.
I can play a video on XP, but there's no audio in Lucid. The hardware is a Lenovo SL400, 2GB RAM, 7200rpm drive w/ 36GB free, and an Intel T5870 Core 2 Duo 2GHz CPU.Media player and Banshee fails to play the video with the error messageNo packages with the requested plugins foundThe requested plugins areWindows Media Audio 9
Avidemux crashes when I try to open the 6.3GB file, which I can play with audio AOK in XP. Assert failed :_offset<=pakSize at line 352, file /build/buildd/avidemux-2.5.2/avidemux/ADM_inputs/ADM_asf
I've been trying to create file sharing between my MacBook Pro and my Lucid Lynx box for time machine backups and media server purposes. I followed this guide:[URL]..Everything seems to work with these exceptions: I can see my LucidLynx box in my finder app in my Mac but only when I run these commands from Ubuntu:
If I restart my LucidLynx box then I can't see anything in finder. I can't log into my LucidLynx box from finder. I don't get a bad username or password error it just tells me the connection failed. *Note if I do enter an incorrect username or password it WILL tell me it's incorrect. I've looked at this link below since some people have used it in theses forums but it's a bit dated[URL]..
I have an old laptop that I want to install Lucid Lynx on from a flash drive but when i try to do so all I get is a blank screen after I select the language and the option to install.
