Ubuntu Networking :: Using Broadband Modem For Wan And Wifi For Lan?

Jan 12, 2011

I tried ubuntu and am very happy with the smooth running and clean interface. I am having trouble setting up my network connections. It seems that I am unable to connect to the internet via my broadband modem if I am connected to my LAN via wifi. I think I need to seperate the networks so that the internet traffic does look on the lan for [URL]. I don't think I have had this problem when I used much smaller distros where I had to set it up by hand.

I might need to add some details I am just not sure what is relevant. I only have a basic understanding of what is going on.

solution:

Solved in #ubuntu irc chan with help by erUSUL.

Just in case anyone else is searching for the same thing.

In network connections in the ipv4 settings tab I edited routes by clicking the button and checked the box next to: "use this connection only for resources on its network"

Ubuntu Networking :: PPTP Works Over Wifi But Not USB Modem

Feb 19, 2010

I am running 64-bit 9.10 on a Acer Aspire 1810T. I can connect to the internet via both wifi and the Novatel U998 modem. I have a PPTP VPN that works correctly via wifi, but does not work via the modem. The obvious problem would be that the ISP is doing something... but I'm dual booting Windows 7, and the ISP's Windows based software is able to connect to the VPN without issue.

I'm running VMWare player to be able to access my required Windows apps, so I'm almost in a position to dump MS if I can get this VPN issue resolved.

CentOS 5 :: Create Channels To Sync Yum Repos And Smart Channels?

Jun 24, 2010

I've installed RPMforge and Smart Package Manager.

I had to create my own Centos 5.5 channels to sync yum repos and smart channels.

Here's the Centos 5.5 channel file for Smart:

Just shut Smart PM down, copy this file into /etc/smart/channels, and restart smart.

Smart should then detect the new channels (repos) for Centos 5.5

Update your channels in Smart, and you should then have yum repos and smart channels both in sync, looking at the same set of packages.

Copy this to CentOS-Base.channel, and add it to the /etc/smart/channels directory.

Ubuntu :: Unlock Keychain In Order To Use Wifi At Every Login?

Oct 2, 2010

I've got a recurring problem on the latest install of Ubuntu 10.4 64 Bit. Everytime I log in, in order to use establish a wifi connection I have to enter my password again to unlock the system keychain. Until I do this no Wifi connection is established.

I've got the system setup on an Acer Aspire Revo which has an RaLink rt3090 card in it. I was using the 2.1.3 driver but have updated to the latest .7 driver and still have them same problem but I suspect this is some sort issue with Ubuntu rather than the driver.

The machine is setup as an HTPC to logs in automatically and boots up Boxee which needs an internet connection so it'd be great to get the internet working from the get go rather than having to enter the password again.

Anyone got any ideas why I'm being asked to unlock the key chain again and to stop this from happening so the wifi works immediately after logged in.

Ubuntu Networking :: IRC Channels - Benefits Of NFS Over CIFS?

May 14, 2011

I was asking around in some IRC channels earlier trying to develop some thoughts on how NFS is better than CIFS. I set up a FreeNAS file server, and that's where all of my data now resides on a pair of raided drives. That way my main desktop, which is kind of a power hog gaming rig, can be powered off since I pretty much live on my laptop now. Anyway, I began to tinker with CIFS and NFS. Since some family members in the household use Windows, I definitely need CIFS. But I wanted to bounce back to NFS too and check it out.

While I do think it's nice I don't have to worry about authentication to the NAS box when using NFS, it's still a little scary. Being that it's more of a trust method instead of actual authentication, truthfully all a user needs to get into your data is the path to your NFS share and a matching UID. I mean, am I wrong by saying this? Sure, it may seem like NFS is convenient, but this angle of it is a little scary. I just don't feel like that screams "secure."

On the flip side, you have CIFS, which uses a user authentication level. So I hit my little shortcut to my NAS and it asks me who I am. I log in and bam, I have connection. I can browse other folders on the share, etc. This is convenient because I do have a "public" share on here with a generic user. That way if friends come over and want to transfer something to me, I have them drop it in the public share and I later transfer it accordingly. Since there is a user level authentication, this to me seems a little more secure.

Speed wise I was a little concerned, as some users have said NFS is faster than CIFS. Well, they might be right. But I did a few bench tests here on my laptop, using the same exact share except one with CIFS one with NFS. I stayed in the exact same location and transferred the same 300mb file in each instance.

NFS - 1.7mb/s
CIFS - 1.5/mb/s

Not exactly enough to warrant a huge argument over, so I leave that argument along the road to be forgot about since it doesn't really have any bearing on this situation. I like things about both NFS and CIFS. I just want to know why is it "not optimal" to use a full blown CIFS setup even if you're using 100% Linux systems.

Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom Wireless Don't Broadcast In 11.04?

May 2, 2011

I have a Dell Vostro 1400 with a BCM4311 Broadcom wireless card that I just reinstalled with 11.04 from 10.04. I have the drives installed and it seams to be working when i run the 'Additional Drives', but I can't get the wireless adapter broadcasting. I followed the instructions given in the knowledge base on installing Broadcom Wireless, to see if I could get it running and that is where I saw the difference between the example and my computer when writing the 'sudo lshw -C network' command. In the example it said it was broadcasting under configuration (just like my wired networks below) and in mine it does not (see below for copy past).

I can't find a tickbox in the systemtray to enable the wirless networking that I had before the update to 11.04 (the 'Enable Networking' tickbox is still there and the wired network works fine - that is how I got online to do this post). I have the hardware switch turned on and I have been in the BIOS and made sure that the Wireless is enabled.Anyone who knows what could be wrong? Where could I go from here?Quote:

Fedora Networking :: Broadcast Addr Incorrect On Boot?

My issue is that on boot my 192.168.1.2/25 interface sets a broadcast address of 192.168.1.255 which is incorrect I believe. Its broadcast should be 192.168.1.127. I've tried setting the broadcast param in ifcfg-p3p1 file "BROADCAST=192.168.1.127" with no benefit.I can change this after boot of course, but that removes my default gateway for some reason.
