Mar 9, 2011My university provides instructions for connecting to their printers and network shares in Ubuntu. They work pretty smooth, but I've run into a couple of problems when trying to follow these instructions in Lubuntu:
1. Windows Printer via Samba printer is missing under Add-->Network Printer in the printer utility (system-config-printer 1.2.3, same one as in standard Ubuntu) I'm guessing I need to install some samba related packages that standard Ubuntu includes by default, but which ones?
2. To access network disks in standard Ubuntu, for example your pesonal space, you select Go-->Location in Nautilus and enter an address of the format smb://something.university.domain/resource. How can I access such locations with PCManFM?

Apr 29, 2010I have in my home 3 pc's 2 of them ubuntu, 1 windows/ubuntu. I have a NAS (mybook WD) that I'm going to hack to install a linux OS on it, to take advantage of some benefits. I'll need access from windows networks. I've read there are many benefits of NFS over Samba, with the inconvinient that it cannot be access by windows. Is it a good idea to have both NFS and samba on the file server?

May 10, 2010I have an Ubuntu 9.10 Samba file server. I have set up Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix in a home network which also has Windows XP home and Vista computers already present in the network. The XP and Vista machines have no problem accessing the file shares.
The server is running mhddfs with FlexRaid. The security is set to share level access. I have a hosts allow line in the smb.conf file to permit access to certain IP addresses and have added the 10.04 netbook remix IP address to this hosts allow line.
I cannot access shares from the 10.04netbook remix machine if the hosts allow line is active, but have no problem from the windows machines. If i comment out the hosts allow line, all machines can access the share, including the netbook remix machine. I am fairly new to Linux and would appreciate any help in solving this problem.
Ubuntu Networking :: Xubuntu/Lubuntu: Wireless Works On One But Not The Others
May 13, 2010So, I tried reviving my old windows laptop by installing Ubuntu on it, but it turned out to be too heavy for it, so i turned towards Lubuntu and Xubuntu.
Now, for the couple of days I used Ubuntu, until i decided it's moving too slow and I should go for a lighter version, my USB wireless adapter (and the touchpad, but that's a subject for another subforum) worked fine.
When I installed Lubuntu and Xubuntu, it stopped working. I tried using network-manager and wicd to make my adapter scan for wireless networks, but it's like the USB isn't even there. When I pulled it out and stuck it on my main PC (that is running Ubuntu), it was discovered immediately and connected to my router. But I can't do it on either Xubuntu or Lubuntu.
PS: If anyone has a quick hint about why my touchpad is working during the installation of Xubuntu, but not after it's complete and loads the desktop, I'll make a new post in the relevent section. A USB mouse works fine everywhere, but a touchpad isn't moving the pointer.
Networking :: Connecting To Internet With Lubuntu Through Ubuntu Machine
Apr 29, 2010How to create some sort of network, which would mean that one computer (Lubuntu in this case) is connecting to internet through second PC (Ubuntu), which is directly connected to cable, so maybe I get some manuals and tips. The computer which is connected to internet have two LAN cards (Realtek 8139 and integrated nVidia MCP65), Realtek card is connected to the internet provider cable (internet is tied to my computer's MAC address and uses static IP).
Second computer have also a Realtek card and it's connected to first computers integrated card. Anyhow - I've put on the first computer eth1 (which is integrated MCP65) IPV4 setting to "Shared to Other Computers" and IPV6 to "Link-Local Computers" and while I was having Windows XP on the second machine, setting on it (the XP machine) DHCP (or how was it correctly called, when system automatically resolves or gets the IP and the rest what it needs?), second computer was receiving Internet signal and I could use both of them in such way.
Now the second computer is with Lubuntu and I thought that I could do the same way as did on XP - just put in Network Manager for the connection (eth0) everything to automatical and there will be internet, but there aren't and the manager shows some kind of "Automatic Ethernet" option, which after activation also doesn't do anything. What do I have to do, to make my Lubuntu machine to recognize Ubuntu's eth1 and to use it as a source for Internet?

User = Bob
Password = Password0
And Bob is on an XP computer, where his username is also Bob and his password is also Password0, is it normal for Bob to go to:
\SambaServer, double click on Bob's share (valid users = Bob only) and Bob get RIGHT in without being prompted?
On my prior setup, the user HAD to log in. If they wanted auto login next time with their credentials, they had to check "remember password." But now it's as if Samba knows who they are. It's very strange. What's the normal behavior? Must EVERYBODY authenticate with passwords, or if the Windows credentials are the same as Samba does it just somehow auto-detect it and allow them through?

Jan 11, 2010so i found an older computer i want to play with as a file server. ubuntu server edition, installed gnome GUI (to make things easier for now, i plan on removing it later) and used [URL].. to configure my 1.5tb harddrive so my windows machines can access it. i had everything working but than a fatal crash made me start from scratch (os and all) now i am unable to access the samba share from a machine running windows 7, but i can access it from a machine running windows XP using the same login and password i set up for windows 7.this makes me believe it's a problem with windows 7 and not samba.

Ubuntu Networking :: XP Drops Connection To Samba Server
Apr 7, 2010In order to get my shares working I first have to connect to the windows shares from the Ubuntu machine. Then I can connect to the Samba shares from the windows machine. If I don't continue to use the shares. It'll drop the connection and I have to unmount the windows shares and start the process over. The wireless network still shows as being connected but I get an error on the windows machine if I try to connect. I've Googled this and it appears to be a Windows problem. I know this is a ubuntu forum but thought I'd ask for any info. I believe that this is also what is giving me shared printer issues as well.

Apr 30, 2010I have a Debian and a Ubuntu box. I installed a samba server on Debian box. I can log in the samba share folders from Windows boxes. Since the samba server has SHARE security mode, I need password only. But when I try to log in the samba share folders from Ubuntu box using nautilus, it asks username, domain and password. I cannot log in share folders on the Debian box. There is no message. Nautilus keep showing the password input box until i cancel it.So I use smbmount command. It works well. But that way is not comfortable at all. Anyone can help me logging in samba share in nautilus?

The first is a Read-Only share for windows users that doesn't require a password. This i've managed to do so far.
The second is a Password protected Upload share. So far I am able to have both shares (which access the same directory) but am unable to log in to the pass word protected share.
I know i'm not doing things quite right, and would like a little bit of help

Nov 14, 2010I am trying to connect to my samba server with xubuntu, so far with no luck.
I am trying to use fusesmb and have been following these instructions:

the top ones say to use Applications - System - shared folders to setup smb client. Xubuntu maverick doesn't seem to have that menu point. So I copied the smb.conf from my desktop machine. libsmbclient is installed.
fuse as such seems to run since teh folder that i designated as mount point (~/Network) changes owner to root when i run fusesmb Network. But apart from that nothing happens.

Nov 27, 2010I'm trying to set up an old computer that was donated to my by an aunt to hold my external hard drives and use it as a file server so i can use them from anywhere within my house. However I can not seem to get the samba server to broadcast/be seen by my ubuntu installation, nor my windows installation.
I've read the manual, to an extent, but I feel as if I am missing something. All I want is to have it to where I can just type in \server and bring up my files to access without having to worry about passwords.

FRED
The Samba users are
SUE
JOE - Read only for specified paths (media playback access only user)
SUE can read/write to any directory under the share: Media
So all that is working fine. As long as I do file operations remotely as SUE everything works remotely. How can I make it to where everything SUE does over Samba FRED automatically has permissions to edit when logged in locally (or SSH)? Also, remember, Joe needs to be able to read where specified.

Mar 4, 2011I cannot access my Ubuntu samba server using windows XP or 7. I keep getting prompted for a username/password. I have created both a unix username with password and a samba username with the same password i used for the unix user. When windows prompts me for the username/password i give it the same one i created on the samba server, but it still will not take it. I know samba is running because i can view the shares but cannot access them without getting prompted for username/password. I just have the one user for now while i am testing, but there will be more.
I am using Ubuntu Desktop 10.04.

I have switched 5 months ago to Telfort network ( i am not sure... ) but as far as i know it was no poblem to connect the samba server with windows explorer everywhere.No i get the only the login screen when connecting from outside the network and when filling in the credentials it just come back with the login screen. I don't have any problems internal when connecting to these shares and supplying the credentials.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba File Server - Printer Drops

If I restart Samba on the print server it works again. There may be a pattern but I havn't figured it out yet.

May 22, 2010I'm trying to set up a fileserver on my 10.04 machine, and access the files from Windows 7 via wifi. I can see everything alright, but the transfer speed to Windows never gets higher than 70KBps. Both computers can access the web at 800+KBps. I've also checked with an OS X machine on the same network, which was also extremely slow, so I'm fairly sure that the problem is on the server's side.

Jun 3, 2010I'd like to access a samba/SSH server which itself is connected to a VPN Server, therefore acting as a VPN Client. As soon as the VPN Connection is established, samba and ssh connections to this VPN Client get a timeout. But not all of them.
To get a better understanding I made an overview. The first one is a general network overview, without any VPN Connection, the second one with the VPN Connection established.
Network Overview without VPN
I can access the server in several ways:
*From the router via ssh (router runs ipcop with busybox)
*From the laptop via ssh (putty via Windows 7)
*From the laptop via samba
*From the internet via ssh (port forwarding to the ssh server)
Everything is working as it should.
Now the server that runs ssh and samba service connects to a VPN Server on the Internet, this is also working fine. Now it gets weird. The only samba/SSH connection that is still working is ssh directly from the router to the server. Everything else gets a timeout:
*From the laptop via ssh (putty via Windows 7)
*From the laptop via samba
*From the internet via ssh (port forwarding to the ssh server)

Why is that? It seems from the little understanding I have of vpn and networking, that incoming packages (like samba request from the laptop) don't get send directly back over eth0 but over the vpn connection. This seems somewhat logic, BUT ssh from the router is still working. Why from the router and not from the laptop? I really can't get my head around it.

tldr; One Client acts as VPN Client and samba/SSH Server. As soon as the VPN Connection is established samba/SSH stop working, but only partially.
Ubuntu Networking :: Seting Up DHCP Server, Bridging, NAS And Samba?
Jan 29, 2011I have been trying for the last few weeks to set up my network but don't see to be getting anywhere. This is what I'd like: I can get Internet on the server but cant work out how to bridge the connection and setup a dhcp server out of eth1. I have installed dhcp3-server and bridge-utils but can't seem to configure them right. The modem uses IP 10.0.0.1 and gateway 10.0.0.138 I'd like to leave the modem settings alone if possible. I don't care what the network IP addresses are but I thought it might be easier to see the difference if they were 192.168.0.0
I am using 10.10 64bit desktop edition for the server/desktop. The laptop has Ubuntu 10.10 and win7 duel boot (Not really worried about getting windows working) HTPC is XBMC Freak on an Asrock ion 330. The desktop is broken at the moment. (ram packed it in) will be running a version of ubuntu at some stage (need funds for more ram). I know there are lots of tutorials out there I just can't find one that explains what I wont to do in easy to understand terms and is up-to-date.
Fedora Networking :: Samba Server Not Working On F13?
Jun 20, 2010I can't get the samba server to work on a Fedora 13 system. First of all, I've activated the "smb" service. After this, since I couldn't find any samba configuration tool in Gnome, I switched to KDE and launched Menu - Computer - System Settings - Advanced - Samba. I typed in my workgroup and netbios name and added a share (2nd tab). Then I added my user name to the blank list "samba users" (4th tab), which wasn't very effective, because this list is blank again when I leave (OK) and reopen this config tool.
From a windows machine, I can't access this Fedora system. Netbios doesn't work (ping netbios name - ...could not find name...) and trying \IP in the explorer shows an error message "Windows cannot find...".
Btw firewall and Selinux are both deactivated.
When I open Dolphin on the Fedora locally and type "smb://localhost" it *does* show a logn window, but no matter what I type in there, it just shows this login windows again after clicking OK.

Jul 22, 2010i just installed zenwalk on another computer in my house (experimenting with zencafe as well) and i also installed the source code of samba directly from the website (i saw that the smbclient command wasn't there when i first installed zenwalk) i have a samba server that has ubuntu as its operating system and i would like to connect my zenwalk system to the shares so i can access them from that computer
i heard that smbclient is the way to go when you do something like this so i tried it a few times and nothing worked ps i am using webmin to configure samba on my ubuntu platform
