Ubuntu Networking :: Transmit 3G-data From Tethered Laptop Using Wireless?
Apr 18, 2011
I can share my phone's 3G data with my 10.10 running laptop using usb tether; the phone has no wireless or bluetooth capability. Is it possible to set up my tethered laptop to share the 3G data with another device via the laptop's wireless?NKS!

This version of mutt seems to be broken ... at least as far as working with motion and msmtp to automatically transmit detected video images to my e-mail account.
I don't see any errors, mutt simply doesn't transmit the data via msmtp as it should.
I switched back to the version of Mutt in Slackware 13.1 and the automatic transmission of video detected by motion and transmitted by mutt via msmtp started working properly.

I have a Verizon Droid Eris, an Android phone that has not yet been rooted. Due to the lack of root capabilities the only way to tether my phone is through PDANet for Android. Unfortunately there is no Linux version of PDANet, so the only computer I can tether my phone with is my laptop which is running Vista.
I also have a desktop running Koala, which is ultimately the computer I want to get connected. I'm hoping that there is some way I can use Internet Connection Sharing on the laptop to accomplish my goal, but I haven't had much luck so far. I don't have a crossover cable either so I would prefer to connect the laptop and the desktop via my Belkin F5D7230-4 wireless router.

I am trying to transfer a lot of data from my laptop to my computer. Both are running Ubuntu 10.04 and both have Samba installed, and folders are setup for sharing. The laptop has a 56Mbps Wireless G built in module, and the computer has a Airlink AWLL6075 Wireless N USB Adapter 300Mbps. (I got the USB adapter working with the internet, since there was an issue with it just working out the box)
I have a wireless network, since wired is out of the question. The router is a Belkin Play N600 HD if that makes any difference. When i try to transfer the files across the speed of the transfer maxes out at about 785 Kbps (My Internet speed is 7Mbps=875 KB/s). It seems that the file is being sent to the router and then the internet and back to the router and then my computer.
I figure that bottleneck is my Laptop at 56Mbps, but that still gives a theoretical max of 7MB/s even at a low connection/link counting it at 24Mbps would still be 3MB/s. I even tried making a wireless Ad-Hoc network to transfer the files but when i went to Network it wouldn't show any shares.
I'm missing something to make it go faster and i really can't figure out what it is, maybe because I am too close to it.

When doing bit torrent downloads, I eventually lose the wired network connection in about 5-15 minutes. This only happens when Deluge is running. I can surf for hours, our connect up the the work WAN for hours and this does not seem to happen.Until these last two weeks, Deluge has been fast and solid. Here is the error from the log:

Recently I have installed Fedora 14 on my other laptop. It's a dual boot with Windows 7. Everything worked perfectly fine, networking included, until my friend didn't accidently turned off the wireless by pressing a wireless button on the laptop. Since then the wireless on Fedora doesn't work. It does on Windows thought. I've tried restarting the laptop few times, but the wireless still doesn't want to work again.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit and I purchased a new ALFA AWUS036H wireless card. I would like to know if this "1Watt" wireless card is configured for full power. iwlist wlan0 txpower results:
wlan0 unknown transmit-power information. Current Tx-Power=27 dBm (501 mW). It appears to me that I should be able to increase the power. "iwpriv wlan0 highpower 1" does not work. Do I need to patch the new default driver that comes with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit with the aircrack one following these directions:[URL]...? Monitor mode and a injection tests seem to work fine with the driver I have installed.

I'm running Slack13-64 and using wicd for my network connections. Is there any way that I can get it to recognize my usb tethered phone? I have a HTC Touch running WinMo, and when I plug it in it becomes eth1.Is there a way that wicd can find it? It only picks up eth0(Wired) and wlan0.

I installed 8.04.3 Ubuntu into a used laptop for a friend, it was an ex business model HP I think, it installed well and wireless was no problem, if the ethernet cable was not plugged in, I could see the wireless signal indicator, it seemed to be there automatically and I could see the available networks displayed. The user has now apparently been using it a lot on ethernet cable for a month or two and wants to begin occasionally to use wireless. She says her daughter gets wireless ok in the house on visits, so I guess that the wifi is always on and available from the (BT, UK) home hub device in the house.
The user is reasonably adventurous, and it is possible that her exploration into a new machine and a new (to her) Ubuntu from previous windows use, she may have inadvertently clicked something and turned off wifi? The user is reporting that without the ethernet cable plugged in, there is no sign of wireless being recognisedA right click on the top panel network icon shows that there is 'no network available' (X sign) and a menu item exists for 'Edit Wireless networks'I have little or no experience about wifi use, so I would be grateful for comments on how I can guide the user to elegantly make use of either wifi or cabled connection

This must be a repost, but I still want to ask, how do I activate the wireless on my laptop? I've been given advice about this a while back, but forgot. Just reinstalled a fresh copy of 9.10
Or is there an alternative way to do this?

searching broadcom ubuntu in google results in a thread that is five years old. has there been any changes? i still cannot set up my 4 year old laptop's wireless to run and i have just about given up. why should i spend my valuable time getting something that is suppose to work when i could just run windows 7 and be done with it. now this is coming from a 4 year old laptop, has anything changed? i want to hear yes but i know that wireless support in linux is absolutely atrocious and sickening, even more than 4 years ago since wireless is now the norm and linux refuses to give proper attention to wireless drivers.

I'm totally sick of my WiFi Card, a Realtek 8187 connected by miniPCIe, althought internally designed as USB, I've tried all there is, and I've decided to change it. Which brand do you guys recommend? In my experience, I want to avoid Realtek and Atheros, but which brand offer the best "out-of-the-box" experience, and less overall issues? Intel, Broadcomm, maybe another Atheros or Realtek model, or whatever you guys think it's the best choice

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 from the install CD on a Vaio VGN TX650P laptop to try it (my first time with Linux so please bear with me) and it all works EXCEPT it is not recognizing my wireless connection.I went to Ubuntu Help and in Section 5 - Wireless Troubleshooting, Check for Device Recognition, it recommended:1.Open a Terminal (Applications → Accessories → Terminal) and type the command: sudo lshw -C networkYou should see an output, along with the words "CLAIMED, UNCLAIMED, ENABLED or DISABLED"What I get is below (It also lists the ethernet connections as network 0) but I don't see any CLAIMED etc.

I have been googleing for the last hour and a half trying to find the easiest way to set up a static IP for my laptop's wireless connection. The most promising link I found required me to delete the network manager but I do not want to do this as I often take my laptop with me so I need to be able to connect to new wlan easily. I just want a static IP so I can set up port forwarding. Is there a equivalent process to windows XP where you just manually assign a local address like 192.168.2.9 or something like that? I tried setting it up through the network manager but later read that it doesn't work for encrypted connections.

I installed Kubuntu 10.04 on my laptop (HP Pavilion dv5-1010) and the networking was working fine for the most part, but then not sure what happened, the screen just kinda went blank so I restarted the laptop, and now the wireless won't turn on. There's a button on the laptop to turn it on and off, but I can't seem to get that to function in Linux. I'm assuming it's just a simple matter of getting the wireless to switch back on again, unfortunately I can't figure out how to do that .
Edit: I've tried to whole booting into windows and turning the wireless on there, and before that's worked, but it doesn't seem to be working this time around.

I'll be frank. I recently switched to Ubuntu 10.10 to become more familiar with linux as I set up a website, but I'm also an avid user in a private torrent tracker. Coming from windows to linux, I don't know how to properly set up a static IP address from my wirelessly connected laptop. Other walk-throughs for setting up a static IP seem to focus on desktop machines and not a wirelessly connection machine. These walk-throughs also tell me to delete Network manager, which really messes up the ability to find connections for a wireless laptop. I also have two homes I go back and forth with, so I'd simply like the ability to just emit a static IP, and for my main networks to allow me to connect, and upload/download from it easily.

I have loaded ndiswrapper and managed to get my D-Link usb dongle working (this is wireless N) but I need to disable my laptops built in rtl8187B wireless (they both connect at log on).
In Windows I just turn of the wireless switch but in Ubuntu this disables all wireless. I think I have to black list the rtl8178b driver.

It isn't even detecting the wireless card, and the network manager will only let me connect to wired networks (I'm connected to my router via ethernet cable right now).
I've pressed the LED killswitch but it does nothing (doesn't change from orange to blue nor does it have any noticeable effect on the network manager or the reports of the above 2 commands).

I would share my long awaited success with connecting my ubuntu laptop up to my universities (University of Western Sydney) wireless network. The rumors appeared true and they have finally implemented 802.11x authentication instead of that horrible java app netdirect. I am sure you've been cursing at its erratic stability. There is no linux documentation for airUWS-Lite nor anything more imformative than there windows/mac point and click steps found at [URL]. However with a few simple clicks you can have stable working connection.
When connecting make sure you have theses settings.
Security: WPA & WPA2 Enterprise
Authentication: Protected EAP (PEAP)
#This is the settings that does not present itself correctly
Anonymous Identity: leave blank
PEAP Version: Automatic
Inner Authentication: MSCHAPv2
Username: <YOUR 8 DIGIT STUDENT NUMBER>
