I have a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 machine networked with my Lucid machine. When I reboot my Windows machine, the only way I can access the shared drives is to also reboot the Lucid machine. Can anyone tell me why this is, and, more importantly, how to make it stop that?
View 1 RepliesIt took me a while..But I finally got samba to be a pdc. I was able to join a test xp machine to the new domain samba made. That part worked well. In my Swat I added a samba new user and password. restarted samba etc.. Then tried to log in from the xp with the new user name as the password. As I hit enter im waiting for it to log in..the XP machine reboots. It seems to do that ever time I try. Im sure theres something not qit right in samba.conf or is it something else.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an ubuntu kk laptop connected via wireless to my mixed network (xp, win7, other ubuntu), but i can not ping said machine or connect via ssh. Internet and smb-browsing ON this machine work, as does pinging FROM it. If this was a windows machine, I'd say a firewall is in the way, but since it's a vanilla karmic install, this should not be the case (or should it?).

One thing i have noticed is that once i enter a folder it won't even let me move the folder.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have ubuntu-8.04.1-server installed on virtual machine. It works perfect. Now, I made copy of this virtual machine. I started that copied machine and it works fine, except one thing: network does not work!
I have several others VMs with freeBSD, openBSD or Windows on it, but only ubuntu machine hes network problem after coping. I tried some other VM with ubuntu on it - same problem! I downloaded VM with ubuntu - same problem.I take a look into /etc/network/interfaces file and it looks just as it should (same as before coping) but ifconfig command returns parameters for lo only (before coping there was eth0 and lo).
My system (Ubuntu 9.10 Gnome Desktop) keeps 'forgetting' my sound settings. every day I have to go into sound preferences and select a different hardware device setting and then change it back to the right one in order for it to work. For instance my sound goes out of my onboard intel based sound via optical to my amp and so the hardware setting for this is IEC598 output + analog stereo input But everytime I boot their is no sound (and hence no light coming through the optical cable) so then I'll change it to Analog surround and the light comes out so then I can change it back to the 1st setting and it works again. Hope that makes sense, I have had this problem and also my video settings have been 'forgotten' and samba also won't work ever since about 4 days ago when the system updated, everything was working fine before that (i have run update manager since and everything is up to date)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've run into a weird problem. Two of my linux machines (A and B, both running CentOS 5.5) are connected to the same wall ethernet socket via a hub. Bothf them are configured for static IPs. The trouble is that when machine B goes offline or hits a kernel panic, machine 1 goes offline too. What I've noticed is that in this condition the "route" output from machine A does not show any entry for the default gateway either The contents of /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 for machine A are:

Since 10.10 is not out yet, I think I'm going to try Mint. (or possibly Lubuntu - I have both ISOs copied to CD already)
Question is: Is it possible to install the new OS on the partition that now contains Ubuntu, without disturbing my Windows Vista partition? (I just need Vista for occasional use of MagicJack- otherwise I'd gladly just wipe the whole disk)
Can I just boot my Ubuntu live CD and run Disk Utility and delete the Ubuntu partition? (I prefer to use GUI rather than CLI).
DSL modem is a Speedstream 6520 router. All computers work fine via dhcp. I'm trying to setup a small server (print server, ssh & ftp servers). I understand enough of the software part of things to get it going, my problem is setting a static IP on the server box. Every time I set the IP in the /etc/network/interfaces file and reboot, I have no network connection. I can talk to the modem through the browser, but nothing beyond that, not even local computers.

ifconfig shows the .202 address, but box can't get to the outside world, and can't ssh into the box from a computer sitting next to it. If I let it dhcp, then I can ssh into it, and have access to the internet. In the modem, I have dmz set for that address. Wan address is static. I can ssh into it if I let it do dhcp, so I know it can work that far. But if I set static ip, I might as well pull the network cable. I've been beating my head on this for over a week, and I'm lost why I can't get it to work. I even changed the dhcp range on the modem, so the .202 is not in that range. There is no dhcp client installed that I can find. I'm using WattOS beta3, which is a light distro based on 9.04. The computer is an old Dell GX150, integrated nic. I have done ifdown and ifup eth0, still no happiness. Doesn't seem like it should be that hard, but I'm stumped. DMZ should let everything pass, so don't need to mess with port forwarding and such. I know it works using dhcp.
I have installed fedora core 9 and configures the ifcfg-eth0 script as below. my problem is the network is not coming up after reboot. after the reboot if i restart the network service(service network restart) network is coming up.

I connect to the network/Internet using Wired ethernet (TCP/IP) with static IP. Everytime I reboot/restart my network configurations are lost and I have to re-configure. I have googled this problem and have seen a few posts/bugs in launchpad etc. for what appears to be the same issue...but unfortunately I am not getting a clear solution to this problem.

I just loaded 10.10 on an Acer Aspire One D255. When I installed Ubuntu, network manager loaded and I was able to use both the wired and wireless cards. After I used update manager, the kernel was upgraded, and I also added some wireless applications (RutilT WLAN Manager, SWScanner, and WiFi Radar). Upon reboot, the network manager doesn't work, and it cannot find any of the devices.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have my ubuntu box hard wired into my network. It all works fine, until I reboot my ubuntu box. After reboot, it can no longer see the network. I have it set up with a static ip. Not sure that I set it up completely correctly but it works fine...when working.. To fix the problem, I enter terminal: ifup eth0 That fixes all know problems until next reboot. What do I need to do so that it will remember settings and automatically be hooked into the network at power up?

The only way I can make it work again is by setting the interfaces back to

and after that put back the br0 settings in the interfaces en restart the network.
I had been manually starting my wireless network with "sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid "my wireless router id". The network would start and work flawlessly for weeks at a time. I can't ask my wife to find the essid in the terminal and then start wireless manually when I'm not here. She hates and fears the terminal. So I downloaded gnome network manager for a point and click interface on gnome panel.The network would start fine but shut down after anywhere from one to six hours. It would then refuse to restart manually or otherwise. I completely uninstalled network manager and tried wicd instead. The same basic problem is happening. The network will restart if I reboot the computer. My system:

I'm configuring an HP Mini 110 (wireless BCM4313) to use it as a small Access Point (ad-hoc mode).
I want to make my configuration reboot friendly. With what I have right now, as soon as I reboot the laptop, the wireless interface configuration isn't correctly setup. I have to do "ifdown eth1; ifup eth1" manually.

So the question is how can I avoid having to bring down and up the interface?

I'm using the Ubuntu VM as my local http server. It is reachable via ip - so http://IP-ADDRESS works. I also use samba for shared folders... but ubuntu is not listed in my network. What means that i cannot access files from outside the vm. Do I have to install further packages, because "normal" ubuntu distributions are listed in my network connections. Samba packages are correctly installed.
`I'm on 10.04 trying to access shares on a windows machine. The machine does not appear at all in windows network/workgroup. I can see these shares when I'm on my windows partition so I know the problem isn't with the network.

I have a centos test machine in my office and its MAC Address has been bind in DHCP server so its pointing to IP 3.209.XX.XX and now i have installed xen machine on it. my Xen machine is pointing to IP 192.168.XX.XX from DHCP while it did not bind in DHCP server. I am able to run "yum update" on my host machine. but i am unable to run "yum update" on my Xen machine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Ubuntu 9.10 (64 bit regular old desktop version) machine has two NICs, eth0 and eth1. eth0 does not connect to my router (and thus the Internet) automatically. I have to manually click on it in the NetworkManager applet after every reboot.
Internet connection sharing has also been impossible. I gave up trying to do that after about 2 weeks. I was simply trying to share my Internet connection with a Windows XP machine over eth1, but it never worked. I could ping one machine from the other, but couldn't get to the Internet from the Win XP machine.
Removing NetworkManager may be the ticket. Most of the tutorials for Internet connection sharing tell you to enter commands in the console. Maybe one of them will work once I remove the NetworkManager applet.
I'm running xubuntu 10.04 LTS (upgraded from 8.04 LTS) on an old low power sempron machine as an always on 'internet machine' i.e. it does all my downloading email etc. and up until yesterday it has always performed flawlessly. Yesterday wasn't its fault, it was a BTI network problem that took out my internet service but while talking to tech support I realized that this machine has lost all ways to control the network cards. Network-manager and network-manager-gnome are installed according to synaptic but they have no menu or notification appearance. I've tried reinstalling them to no avail.
View 8 Replies View RelatedThe problem in a sentence: a F10 machine seems to disappear from the network after running for a couple of days, however, the network is accessible from the machine itself. My setup: A router with two machines connected via ethernet. Both are essentially desktop computers, one is a standard machine that is booted every day (let's call it Desktop) and the other runs continuously, having only a keyboard attached (let's call it Server).
After running for a few days, Server becomes inaccessible from Desktop. It doesn't respond to ping, ssh fails etc. Even the router shows that Server is disconnected from the network. There is a ping running in Server that pings a machine in the internet with an interval of 60 seconds, the output is directed to a file. The file shows no failed pings, it even succeeds when the router shows that Server is disconnected.
The most peculiar thing: a random keyboard event (e.g. pressing Shift) will make Server reappear. I don't have to do anything else, just press Shift on Server's keyboard and a few moments later everything is back to normal. The router shows that Server is connected and I'm able to do ssh to Server.
I'm running Red Hat as a virtual machine on VMWare and the network configuration on VMWare is a bridge and i have had this problem, some times does not get network o others do, i have verified code...

I can't seem to mount the external drives attached to either machine over the network. I can share folders from the internal drives fine but when I try to access an external drive from either machine I get "unable to Mount volume". View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been out of the linux game for a few years and decided to get back into it, I've been working now for a few days on figuring out why my machine's network card does not seem to want to work on a new FC13 installation.The machine is an older Dell Dimension with an 2.53 Gig Celeron Processor, 512 Megs of RAM (A gig soon) and the ethernet card is an Intel Corporation 82562EZ. Sone generic thing, though FC13 does recognize and appears to have appropriate software.
ifconfig shows no IP address in the x.x.x.x sense, and restarting the network doesn't seem to do anything. The network card is in working order, I tested it in a winxp installation, and the cable is also functioning.
