Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Networking Stopped Working
Nov 6, 2010
Wired and wireless networking have been working flawlessly for years on my HP Compaq 6710b laptop. Several weeks ago, after an automatic update via the update manager, my wired network stopped working. I did not notice it directly, since my wireless connection took it over. I only noticed it when I had to work in an office where I didn't know the wireless password.Since then, I have been trying several things and searched several forums. It is hard to find any troubleshooting information about wired networking, as most of the problems seem to occur with wireless.
I did verify that there is no hardware problem. My laptop is dual boot and when I boot the other operating system, the wired network works without problems (as does the wireless.)My Ubuntu version is Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS. My kernel version is 2.6.32-25-generic i686. I hope anybody can help me getting my wired network working again.

I'm running 10.10 on a brand new computer, and up until this afternoon the wired connection was working fine. All of a sudden it stopped working (and doesn't work in Windows either).I ran sudo dhclient and it gave me:
DHCPDISCOVER on eht- to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 3 (7, 9, 10, 18, 13)
No DHCPOFFERS RECEIVED

I had shut down my laptop at work last week and when I booted it up the wired internet connect was not working. The wireless connection is working (I'm typing now via wireless).I have WinXP Pro on this machine (but I've never used it--I'm all Linux now). So I booted into WinXP and turned off the wireless and got internet connection through the ethernet cable, so it doesn't seem to be the cable or my ethernet card. Here is the output of "ifconfig"
Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1c:25:7a:fa:b6
inet addr:xxx.xxx.xxx.xx Bcast:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Mask:255.255.255.0

I have been running Natty on my MacBook Pro for a while now and then suddenly while just using it normally (not installing etc), my skype crashed and would crash again on restart of the program. Now this could be a red herring, but though I'd include as much info as pos.
I installed all the updates the system told me to, to see if this would help and restarted.
On restart, the wired network would not connect. I get the following errors in my log:
May 26 12:46:40 richard-MacBookPro NetworkManager[763]: <info> Saved default wired connection 'Auto eth0' to persistent storage
May 26 12:46:41 richard-MacBookPro NetworkManager[763]: keyfile: updating /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/Auto eth0
May 26 12:46:41 richard-MacBookPro NetworkManager[763]: Ifupdown: get unmanaged devices count: 0
[Code]....
ipconfig does not exist on my computer, otherwise I would echo this for you also.

My ubuntu karma desktop is plugged into a wired connection that goes through a router and into my cable modem.Everything was working fine like it had been foseveral months yesterday morningSomething happened by the end of the day that has screwed up my wired networking. I plugged my laptop into the same cable thats plugged into my ubuntu, and the cat5 cable is live. Also when I plug said cable into the ubuntu box, the ethernet lights come on, or atleast a solid green one. Meanwhile the network connections Icon continues to have a red X and a tooltip saying "No network connection".
Under network settings, there is only one wired network "Auto eth0", but it says "last used: never" which is strange since I've been using this for months. When I click edit the main settings are MTU automatic, ipv4 automatic DHCP, and ipv6 ignore.hat could the problem be? By chance did a karma update get released that broke the networking

I'm not a total newbie, but run into some strange problems with my installation of Lucid.Everything was working fine yesterday. I shut down the laptop and powered it up this morning and had problems with network. I have two NICs (wired and wireless). Both are set to pick up IP settings from DHCP and both do, however when using wired network I can't communicate with outside world - can't even ping the default gateway (but pinging 127.0.0.1 or IP address of the NIC no problem, so stack should be OK).When on the wireless network everything works fine (otherwise I would struggle to write this post ).What is very weird though is that I have a VMWare Player installed and using Windows VM on wired network works just great!
I noticed that when you're persistent it happens that you can ping but huge chunks of traffic are lost (e.g. packet 1-10 would pass, 11-40 would be lost, 41-59 would pass and so on).I restarted Ubuntu, tried shutting down interfaces, disabling networking and nothing helped. I don't recall performing any changes (at least that I would be aware of).Can anyone suggest something?BTW. This is not DNS issue as both IP addresses and FQDNs do not work. When I refer to using a given network (wired or wireless) the other one is down with ifconfig command...

My desktop computer has another Linux distro on it. Wired networking was working fine. I wanted to try Ubuntu 10.10 so I installed it on a spare USB HDD. After install, networking still worked on both distros.
I moved the USB HDD to my win7 laptop and Ubuntu 10.10 booted fine. Once booted, Ubuntu asked to configure wireless on the laptop. I tried to do this but it did not work.
Therefore, I moved the USB HHD back to the desktop and booted. Now the wired network does not work from either Ubuntu or other distro (fedora 14). And to top it all off, the wired network will not work even from the Ubuntu live CD.
I have checked all connections, switches & cat5 cables to my desktop computer. I can still access the network and internet from my laptop (in win7) so I do not believe it is an infrastructure issue. I can confirm that everything works from the cable out of the back of the desktop through to the internet.
Here is the output from the usual troubleshooting commands in Ubuntu 10.10 code...

I'm running Lucid 10.04 on a Dell Studio 15. I first noticed it today, but it could have been happening for a couple of days. I get no IP address for my wired connection when running ifconfig. Wireless is connecting perfectly. Normally when I start up both wired and wireless connect and get a local IP address like 192.168.1.11*. Additionally, the router has a slowly blinking light corresponding to this connection, which is different from other good connections like my printer which has a solid light on. Here is output from running route -n:
Code:
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 2 0 0 wlan0
169.254.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 1000 0 0 wlan0

I just started having a problem with my 10.04 laptop a few days ago, maybe Thursday, last week. When the computer is plugged into my home network (standard 192.168.1.1 sort of IPs) it works fine, but when I try to connect to my work network (130.15.90.XX) I am unable to pick up an IP. The router in my office is working fine, all the windows boxes can connect.
I've also noticed that when the computer is plugged in at work the notification icon for the networking indicates it is looking for a wireless connection (rather than the normal up/down arrows), even if wireless is deactivated
I can set a static IP in /etc/network/interfaces and everything works, so it seems to be a DHCP problem?

I have been looking around the forums searching for similar problems, it seems not only me had this problem. About a month ago I did a regular update via Upd Manager. The next day - no wired connection.Still managable, since the local library has wireless. Now that won't work either.Just after I upgraded from Jaunty, I accidentally removed NetwMngr from the top right corner of the screen, but that should not have anything to do with how the program works, right? I now cannot reach NM, if I run it from the terminal, nothing happens visibly.

When originally installing 11.04 I had problems getting my Ralink 5390 wireless card to work.
Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.
I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.

However when the host is connected via Wireless, the Guest Does not have any internet connectivity. The VM Network connection is set to Bridged.

I recently did a fresh install of 10.04 from 9.04 and since then I am unable to use Internet. However my ethernet connection is working fine, as I am able to login to modem and check configuration. I reinstalled twice, downloaded fresh 64-bit & 32-bit and also followed kernel update steps as in few forum posts, but no joy. The firefox is throwing an error "The connection has timed out". My internet connection is working fine as I am able to use my Windows Laptop to post this message. I checked system > administration > hardware drivers and couldn't find any unsupported hardwares.I had similar issue when upgrading to 9.10, hence stayed on 9.04. When I looked at LTS image, I couldn't resist and cleaned up 9.04.

I dualboot Win7 and Ubuntu 10.04 for quite a long time now with no problems.... but now wireless works perfect on Win7, but I can't even connect Ubuntu with a direct wired connection.... ubuntu connects to the actual Linksys Wireless router just fine, but just won't take the internet, and I've tried two different Wireless cards.this all started (I dunno if its relevant or not) when I put in a new TV tuner, which I obviously took out right away. But the problem is still there. I don't think its the card, I'm pretty sure its just some kind of setting that I've messed up or something because when I connect to the network its near 100%.

I have a wired problem in Ubuntu 10.10, My Ubuntu can connect with Wireless network, however it cannot connect to Wired Connection. I installed dual System, one is Ubuntu 10.10, the other one is Win7. Under Win7, I can both connect to the Internet in Wired or Wireless mode.
The more wired phenomenon is: When I plug in the cable, I can see the icon connected in my network manager. But I cannot visit any URLs. By checking the "ifconfig -a", I can see the IP addr was assigned to my eth0.

Running a wired connection through a Linksys router that suddenly stopped working today.I thought this was a ipv6 issue sinced I enabled some of those settings to share a connection with my PS3.I have since disabled IPv6 in Firefox and through the grub. The RealTek adapter will not even show a connection through the network manager when connected. The onboard adapter will show a connection, give me a ip address and MAC but still will not load the internet. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both adapters through the network connections, as well as reinstalling Firefox to no avail.I've also tried using Open DNS servers.I cannot ping through the network tools either. Hard for me to paste a ifconfig since I'm on my laptop.I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (not dual booting).I did some updates this morning but it worked fine for a little while after that, until I tried to connect to my PS3.

I recently installed 11.04 on my PC (was running 9.04), and beforehand "tried it out" and networking was fine. I could access the internet no problem.I then ran the install, and fully formatted my HDD (i have 1 HDD for the OS and another for storage)It crashed halfway thorough, so no problem, i just re-formatted the hardrive and installed. However, It didnt connect to the internet, I literally tried every single forum looking for the solution, including editing the Network interface file. After a bit of diggingfound my user privileges did not allow me to connect to ethernet, and randomly use audio devices.SO, no problem I checked the boxes, but it still wont connect to the ethernet now, and it was fine before, tried re-installing twice with full format, but still doesnt work.

i'm really frustrated with ubuntu the last little while. i thought things would be better but its hard to stay optimistic when nothing works. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 into my compaq notebook. The problem is that I am not able to connect to my wired broadband internet.
Here are the details of my attempts so far:
1)"ifconfig -a" gave 2 devices eth0 and wlan0.
2)"pppoeconf" was unable to detect any ethernet cards.
3)Each time I plug in the LAN cable , the network icon would say "connecting" and ultimately result in "disconnected. Now in offline mode".My ethernet device is Realtek PCIe RT8101E/RTL102E (rev 02).
I also tried to install the realtek driver though I was not confident whether I did it correct.

I recently upgraded to 10.04 and now my wired network no longer works. I am unsure if it worked at all since the upgrade as that computer is rarely used, but it was definitely working prior to the upgrade. It is some sort of Realtec card, I believe. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm running 32 bit 10.04 on a 2 GHz P4.

Everything seems to be fine while she is connected via Wireless. When she plugs in the wired connection a problem occurs, it seems that every SSL Site and/or encrypted Website cannot be shown on her Notebook, for example shopping at Amazon.com. The Problem does not persist the whole time, sometimes it works for a few seconds and you are able to fill your cart.
Other Informations: The Connection has been tested with Windows 7 and with Ubuntu (USB-Live-Stick Lucid)... no difference.
Is it possible that her Hardware is not running correctly? What should we do next?
Tomorrow we want to reset the computer to factory default status.
Are there any possibilities of testing a SSL Connection using the Terminal?

I use Ubuntu 10.04. Last night, I installed the most recent updates for this istribution, and before I shut off my laptop, my internet was working smoothly. However, today my Internet connection is behaving very strange. When I try to connect to the internet, my browser times out or cannot establish a connection. I'm able to connect to low-input sites like Google search, but I cannot connect to sites like Facebook, Wikipedia, or even the Ubuntu forums (I'm currently using a friend's laptop to post this). Pidgin and Skype work without a problem, as well as Transmission. I primarily use Firefox, but I also tried Chrome, Opera, and Epiphany; none of them worked. Oddly enough, my update manager also cannot connect to the Internet to retrieve updates.
I have restarted my router, but it still works properly, as it is running fine on my friend's laptop. I have tried 'no proxy' in Firefox, but it did not help. I also disabled IPv6 in etc/sysctl.conf by adding the code:
#disable ipv6
net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6 = 1
[code]....

Ubuntu 9.10. Everything works fine until yesterday when I cannot connect to network. My lan card is Realtek PCI and is present on system (i can read mac address and all settings). In connection manager I was try to set everything manually (IP, netmask, gateway and DNS) or leave automatic - without success. I am connected to router. I don't want to feed "log-hungry" people because how to resolve ubuntu lan problem can help me (not someone who will want to try). I cannot connect manually because there is no option when I click on network icon (I can just uncheck connection, but that's all). I can't even access to my router (from computer with Ubuntu, because I can access from another computer). All logs shows lan card proper. Windows XP on the same computer booted from another HDD works fine.
