Isn't this the place to change the dns servers? If I input dns server fx googles 8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4 then it's like the system asks for search domains. Must I input something there, or how do I set the dns servers?

View 1 Replies View Relatedim having some problems trying to have multipul pc's at my house being VNC servers. I have one thats running ubuntu 8.10 and it has its own ip and its own port of 5900, the usual vnc port number. That is my server. Then i have my main pc that has its own ip as well and its own port number of 5901. After some research i found that the port numbers start at 5900 and go up by one for vnc. So my main issue is how do i tell my vnc client to look at a port other than the standard 5900?
Iv been googling trying to figure out how to configure vnc to look to a different port.
I always use Shorewall on my Ubuntu Servers and it works great, one things I have never been able to get right is the TOS.Let say for example I would like:
HTTP traffic (80, but all traffic get routed to 3128 [Squid]) to get highest priority
SMTP (25) second highest
POP (110) third highest
The rest forth
How would I get that right?
I found one strange issue with ubuntu, can anyone suggest if its a bug or as designed? If I have two nameservers in my resolv.conf, ubuntu only checks the first (and receives a not found reply from there) and never goes to the next two nameservers. This behaviour is very different from windows or other linux systems.

However, whenever I attempt to access my server through FTP from my desktop, it does not work. The file in question will load VERY SLOWLY to about 8% then the connection will drop out.My desktop and server are connected to the same router, and I feel as though this may be the issue.or vsftpd in a special way to access it through LAN?What I am trying to do specifically is use Comicpress (a Wordpress plugin) to upload comics to my server, with no luck.
View 1 Replies View Relatedwe are setuping high-performance web farm with 4 ubuntu servers (all 10.14 LTS 64bit, i5Core CPU, 16GB Ram). One server is "database" server with mysql installed, three servers are "webservers" with tomcat installed. All three webservers have public IP and are connected directly to internet by eth0 (onboard network card) and are connected to switch that is connected to database server by eth1 (pci network card). All servers has stardard instalation with no special modules/programes installed.
Web servers are already under load, but only on about 10 requests/minute. After several hours in production, strange thing happened - one of the web servers (each time another one, so it is happening to all of them but not at once) starts to have pings to database (that is connected directly on LAN) = 100ms (other two servers still has like 0,02ms). Pings stay high until we do /etc/init.d/networking restart, after that it is fixed and pins are again low again. Another strange think is, that when we let ping running for some time, it is slowly dropping from 100ms to 1 ms and then again jumps to 100ms (exactly to 100ms always) and again starts dropping - so it is cycling over and over again (one cycle takes about 2 minutes).
We were trying reconfigure network, play with switch (the same situation was happening even without switch when there was only one webserver and one database server directly connected), disable IPv6 but nothing helped. The only thing that we discovered is that it has to be caused by network configuration.Do you have any idea what can cause it? We went through systems logs but found nothing suspicious (at least according to our understanding).

Both servers have ftp access, I am assuming theres an ftp command I use on the destination server to connect to the source server and retrieve the files? All the files reside in the one dir and need to be copied to the same dir on the destination server.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy desktop server serves up files via a number of protocols and I connect to it via SSH and Avahi. Today I tried connecting to it via SSH, but it timed out. I was able to ping it, and a port scan reveals all the ports I have open on the network. THe problem is that I can't connect via SSH, HTTP, AFP, SMB or any other protocol I have established.Is there a way to jump start a system in a situation like mine? I have a 6 month uptime going, but I'm taking it down soon for some hardware upgrades, so a hard restart is not out of the question, but I'd rather not. I also reset the router without a solution.

So to do this I entered: Code: sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces ...and pushed the wrong buttons and exited the session suddenly by mistake. After learning how to use the vi editor I went back but I got a notice that the the last session didn't close properly and that a "swap" file had been created. Anyway, I entered my static IP info, saved the file, and attempted to restart with:

I have an IBM Bladecenter HS21 with 3 blade servers. All 3 blade servers were initially installed with RedHat Linux 4. I then installed ixMOS on one of the blade servers, and Mandriva Linux was also installed (over RedHat) automatically along with ixMOS.
Now, I have some network problems. The other 2 servers with RedHat can ping each other, but it appears that the server with ixMOS/Mandriva Linux is isolated, that is, I can't ping the other 2 servers from it, and I can't ping it from the other 2 servers.
Does anyone have any ideas on what is wrong and how I can solve this problem? One more thing, my installation of Mandriva Linux has no GUI, so I have to do everything using the command line interface.

connecting to various servers on my network via SSH. All IP's on my network are static IP's that I've set.
DHCP is at: 192.168.1.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Source IP that I'm trying to SSH from is 192.168.1.2 (My MacMini) I have 2 servers that I SSH into both running CentOS. One I have no problem with: 192.168.1.102 But the other I can't seem to get to: 192.168.1.103 The strange thing is I can only get to it once I ssh into my .102 server. Then ssh from there to my .103 server.
It started breaking down about a few days ago when I installed my VPN server. Could this be causing the problem?? I can access the VPN interface both internally (with a local ip) and externally (outside from the Internet). But why can't I ssh to it from my local network? I've set the subnet for the VPN to be the same as my network.
I have two servers one sits on my home network the other is slicehost vps. I want to setup a vpn between my home server and the slicehost vps. Is there away I can have my slicehost vps forward port traffic to my home home pc over the vpn or have my home server act as the vps ip address ? Ideally my home server would dial into the vps and be able to communicate to it directly over vpn. I know I need to use openvpn but I am wondering with setting up a virtual network that the two servers could talk between or setup a virtual between the two computers.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOK, so, basically, not so long ago I had a modem + LAN cable kind of internet setup, and my friends and colleagues had no problem connecting to my Apache, ircd, etc.
But a few months ago my ISP changed it's policy, and now I have a single cable, plugged directly into the 'eth0' port, which connects to WAN (static IP) and, through PPPoE, to the net (dynamic IP). (Sorry, my knowledge in networking is close to nonexistent)
So, now there is a problem. My friends CAN still connect to my FTP and httpd on Windows XP, through both the external, dynamic IP, as well as the static WAN IP, but my Slackware (WAN IP is set up with DHCP, PPPoE - through pppoe-setup, with firewall at '0') is refusing access. No sings of connection is shown in the /var/log/access_log.
Also, VoiceChatter server DOES log the connection attempt, but it refuses connection, sending a 'Auth challenge', and then cutting connection. (The 'challenge' bit was never there before the new net setup)
All connections are done through WAN static IP (though test with netwide dynamic IP yield the same results =)
I run Slackware 13.1, didn't touch the firewall settings at all, and, as mentioned, pppoe firewall is set to '0' value.
I'm having an issue with resolv.conf being empty (apart from the resolvconf header) upon first login. I am assigned a DHCP lease fine, it also appears that DNS works briefly as all my NFS file shares seem to be working ok and they have name rather than an IP address in /etc/fstab. I have to manually re establish my lease by using the Network Manager panel each time I first login.

The reason I am asking is because I run multiple web servers for web hosting and I have a proxy server setup that directs traffic to the appropriate computer based on domain names.
I have my router connected to my cable modem, and then all of my computers are connected thru the router. To me it would make more sense to have my proxy server be the first to connect and then thru a second ethernet card connect to the router. I also have a 5 port switch on order as well. I can't get the two servers to communicate, even a simple ping won't work. The "Network Adapter" in VMWare is set to "bridged", a setting which has worked fine when installing WinXP in VMWare and connecting to the Internet.Even if I ping sles1 from sles1 (= "pinging myself"), I get the same error message.Only if I ping localhost, I get a proper ping result.What did I do wrong?
