The default name server set by network manager works just fine much of the time but there are times when it slows down badly. What I want to do is to have network manager add extra nameservers to the list when it starts the network.
View 2 RepliesI seem to have somehow mangled my my Ethernet and wireless's connection to the outside world on my Ubuntu 10.04.1 machine. I was trying to get a static local IP, and that worked great for a few days, until I lost all Internet access completely. However, I can connect to my router on my wired connection - but not the wireless.

Now, I just want everything to work as it did when I installed Ubuntu 2 months ago. How can I reset Network manager back so that it just works? I realise that don't need a static IP, it can only be 2 IPs, as I have 2 PCs only.
Or is there some better way to manage my networks? I'm not the best when it comes to those.
Okay something i find very odd. When booting the livecd network manager is there, i select my wireless net and connect. Yet i install and it doesn't appear, i click the network bit under the status tab of the computer menu and by default it's using ifup and not network manager...anyone else get that? Or is it supposed to be that way...seems rather unfriendly though.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been encountering this problem, not only on 10.4, but on older versions too: I use a wifi router to connect my laptop to the Internet, but sometimes I need to connect directly to another computer to move some files over GLAN. But Ubuntu's Network manager doesn't allow me to configure the eth0 interface without specifying a gateway (no gateway = grey submit button), but when a gateway is specified, it always rewrites the default gw specified already by the active wifi connection and returns back after unplugging the eth cable.
Of course this can be solved by a few route commands, but this is unacceptable since it is needed to establish the cable connection without any further assistance from within and as well without replacing the default gw and thus breaking the Internet connection. Is there, please, any possibility how to prevent Network Manager from replacing these routes?
Is there a way to alter the default position that windows open such that if I have an application that I want to open (for example) with the lower right corner in the lower right corner of the screen or in the middle of the screen, etc, this can be done automatically? In KDE it can be done by right clicking and adjusting application properties. I don't see how to do that in Gnome. I'm using Fedora 13 with Gnome.

Recently, I get the following problem: At the automatic connection, I get the message: Network manager applet (/usr/bin/mn-applet) needs default keyering. As I don't know what it is to type it and then, deny or OK, it doesn't get connected to my wireless network.

The default output settings on the board does not include left and right speakers. Is it possible to alter the default outputs on the internal sound card via ubuntu? Under windows there is some software gigabyte supply which enables reallocation of the output sockets. What is available for Ubuntu?
View 4 Replies View RelatedHearing the praises about fastness of xfce all over the net i decided to try it for my fav ubuntu i rightaway installed xubuntu (without creating a bakup of the names of programs that were going to be installed which i generally do to fully remove any utility that i install for test) i understood that fast for xfce actually meant light(stupid me). now i switch back to gnome onlt to find xfce stuff like pacmn file browser and wicd to name a few. i removed the pacmn browser but when i remove wicd the default network manager does not show up in the task panel i would like to know:
1.how to get back to gnome'z default network manager AND
2.the list of utilities installed when xubuntu-desktop is installed
Recently I purchased a new laptop and installed openSUSE 11.3 x64 Gnome. I was running openSUSE 11.2 x86 Gnome on my previous laptop. Most things are working well, although still tweaking things here and there.
The biggest issue at the moment is starting the network. When I boot the system it loads into desktop (gnome) no problem, but then takes between 3 - 5 minutes to come up asking for Default Keyring Password before it will launch network manager. Everything else has loaded and it running fine except the network.
The first time I launched the system (after install) it worked perfectly, however soon as a set the password for the Default Key this started happening. The time delay before it launches does vary each time but always around 3 minute mark.
I have a question about /etc/services file. If I open ports in firewall, do I need to alter /etc/services file in order for certain apps to work?

Above example shows if 465 tcp isn't altered, Postfix MTA fails to listen on 465 tcp port. What if there's a bigger span 3000:7000 TCP/UDP, is there a need to alter each line by hand?
So I've been asked to install a file/printer server and, possibly, inet proxy for a small office (5 PCs). My concern is: There are:4 PCs on XP x32 1 PC on Win7 x642 Printers, one of them with a scanner Some buisness software they use does not cope with win7.Had hard time installing additional x64 drivers for printer (which are obsolete by now, I guess). Network runs on a simple router which is connected to internet. For now they have been using simple sharing of C: folders, which had freaked my out a bit.
So..Despite XP being old and a presence of x64 machine on the network, do I:install x64 server edition install x32 one What additional software, besides Samba and printer/scanner drivers, I will need to handle both architectures? I have rather basic understanding of how servers work, i.e. I run samba, apt-cacher, torrents on my home network.
I recently fixed an annoying problem and I thought it would be nice to share my solution here. The problem was that after a cycle of suspend/resume, Network Manager would only auto-connect to the same network as it was previously connected to. So, for example, if I suspended my laptop at home, and then I went to school and resumed it, it would try to connect to the home network, and then just give up. I am a Windows refugee who discovered Ubuntu as a way to save my files from my virus-ravaged computer. Had no installation discs for Windows, so when I had to wipe my hard drive and start over, I decided to give Ubuntu a try. I've had mixed success, but that's another post...
Right now, the problem is that I installed 10.10 two weeks ago and was able to connect to the Internet with no problems - until yesterday. Suddenly, our wireless network (the only one in the vicinity) does not come up as available in Network Manager. In fact, the entire wireless option disappeared. I know there are many posts and threads on here about this, but weeding through them trying to find an answer is more frustrating than actually dealing with the problem. I know the router works because I can post on this forum from the Macbook. I really like Ubuntu and would like to keep using it, but not being able to connect to the Internet now on top of the other issues I've had is making me doubt I want to continue down this Linux road.
P.S. When I attempted an analysis through System Testing, it said something about there being no proprietary drivers?
I have used ubuntu in the past but had a lot of hardware issues with it and unfortunately moved back to windows (( BUT i have tried Ubuntu again and all seems to work great except wifi My wifi connection is sort of working because when i run SUDO IWLIST SCAN it does pull up all available networks. But in the network manager icon on the panel i left click but i see no networks and can't connect to anything. I WOULD LOVE TO keep Ubuntu and use it permanently but I must get wifi working or else this won't be possible.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently put Linux on a Thinkpad T40 I got. The wireless card works out of the box--I can see nearby networks. However, I can't connect to mine. network-manager would try (spin spin spin), fail, ask for the password, and then go back to the beginning and repeat indefinitely. This happened to me on a different computer, and on that one all I had to do was use wicd instead of network-manager. So I installed wicd, but it's not working either--it hangs at "Obtaining IP address".
I've found many, many threads with people who had the same problem, but none of their fixed worked for me.
I also tried to get wifi going manually, using this guide, but that didn't work.
Is necesary Network Manager to install a web server ?

Not only did it not fix it, but now I cannot connect to any network, wired or wireless. I tried to open the default network manager and it said "Network management disabled". Neither of my wired network connections are listed in the network manager applet. I know that networking seems to be functional since I can ping local devices on the network. I can't resolve DNS names however. I suppose this is because network manager usually handles DNS? I've posted the outputs of various configurations below.

Everything was working fine previously, I've even re-installed ubuntu just in case it was something I did....again everything was working OK until I installed the latest Nvidia drivers and updated ubuntu.I can see my wireless connection when I click on the network manager icon I just wont connect.Wired connection works fine.

System->Preferences->Network Connection brings up "Network Connections". Under the "wired" tab, I see "ifupdown (eth1)". The edit button on the right side is grayed out.
Is this where an IP address can be config'ed, or is it somewhere else?v
I've installed Karmic after using Jaunty for a year. In Jaunty, my wireless Belkin USB adapter would get it's best signal if I set the rate at 11M...sudo iwconfig wlan0 rate 11MTo avoid having to enter that in terminal after a reboot, I followed the advice of Raven on another thread that suggested using WICD instead of Network Manager, as there were options for scripts in WICD that would allow a startup script...sh -c "/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 rate 11M"This doesn't seem to be working for me in Karmic (my connection constantly drops). Plus, the new icons for WICD are distracting (it changes color from green to yellow when the signal goes from good to low) With Network Manager and setting the rate @ 11M via terminal, everything seems rock solid (I left Last FM on last night and it was still playing when I woke up).

sudo pon dsl-provider
It seems ther's a bug with network-manager, but I'd like to use it again as it easier and NB user-friendly.
