Ubuntu Networking :: Firewall Settings : Unable To Configure For Apt-get And Dns?

Mar 28, 2010

I have tried various rules, like opening port 53 for the DNS with little success. I finally figured that you need to set the source port to 53 and NOT the destination port. However, I have been unable to figure out what ports apt-get requires. The only way I get it to work is to accept everything in iptables.

OpenSUSE Network :: Firewall Settings - Configure - Interface Isn't Assigned To Any Zone?

Apr 20, 2010

I have a work desktop plugged into the work network. As I opened my firewall settings I noticed that it is turned off. My question is how should I configure it? I saw that the interface isn't assigned to any zone... I should assign to internal zone and open some port that I need in order to work? There are some guidelines for configuring the firewall?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Configure Openbox Settings ?

Aug 4, 2011

I have just installed Lubuntu (from Ubuntu). I would like to add a few items to the right-click menu. I tried doing it using ObMenu as well as directly by editing the configuration files in /home/{user}/.config/openbox, but the default remains unchanged (even after reloading the configurations from the right-click menu or rebooting). Could someone give detailed instructions (e.g. where should I add some apps so as to see on the right click applications list?). The default on my right-click are a file manager, a browser and a terminal.

Also, I dont see a way to edit the main menu (the one at the lower left corner of my screen) anymore, although I remember to have accessed it from the main menu somewhere.

Networking :: Configure My Firewall (through Iptables) To Allow Apt-get Features

Apr 26, 2010

I am encountering problems to configure my firewall (through iptables) to allow apt-get features, like update and install.I have the latest debian server running in a virtual machine in my windows xp and therefore I have two interfaces in this debian server:- NAT Interfaceinet: 10.0.2.15- Host Only Interfaceinet: 192.168.56.101So far my iptable rules drop all packets for default, in exception icmp and ssh that I allow to ping and connect from my windows xp. Both of them I use only the Host interface (192...) to connect to another 192... interface on my windows.

Those are working fine, but apt is not. I know, in this very moment it shouldn't. But I made a lot of attempts trying to configure the iptables allow connections through the 80 and 21 ports from/to NAT and Host. I think I made all possible combination (or not, because it didnt work). But I'm wondering if someone more experient can help me solve this problem.

Pc #2 is a windows xp pc another place at the internet.I have configured the zyxel router to forward incomming trafic on port 5902 to the local ip-adress of the debian box. I can connect to the server from a pc on the same side of the zyxel router. Is it deffenitly a router problem, or could it have something to do with debians own firewall?

Networking :: Unable To Ssh Without Dropping Firewall Security On Dsl Modem?

Apr 22, 2011

I have a home network with a linux dhcp server and a couple of clients. The Internet comes from a dsl modem with a different subnet than my wireless router. The network works fine and I have no problems, but I now need to ssh to a work computer and the only way I can do that is if I drop the security in my dsl modem. So I thought all I need to do is use port forwarding on my dsl modem, but it won't let me because it is on a different subnet. I tried putting the dsl modem on the same subnet, but that did not work and made it so I could not access anything.

Fedora Networking :: Unable To Connect To Wireless Networks And Unable To Configure Network

Jul 27, 2010

I just switched from Ubuntu to Fedora 13 because I was unable to get Ubuntu to connect to wireless networks. I tried everything suggested in help and forums, and kept getting "Bad Password" with WICD and Network Manager. Now, with Fedora...I still can't connect.

Problem #1: The guide says to "...make sure that the relevant wireless interface (usually eth0 or eth1) is controlled by NetworkManager," and that I do this via: System>Administration>Network

However, there is no Network option under System>Administration.

Problem #2: I open Network Manager, which displays a list of networks. I click on mine, configure it with WPA and the right password, and it fails to connect: "The network connection has been disconnected."

Ubuntu Security :: Firewall Settings In A Network With It And XP

Jan 18, 2011

I run a small (cabled) network between a desktop with XP with two printers hooked to it and a laptop with Ubuntu 10.04.1 64b. I can approach and use these printers from my laptop and filesharing works also. BUT ... this only works when my Ubuntu firewall (Gufw 10.04.5) is switched off. I am operating behind my router_modem which has a hardware type of firewall switched on at all times so I presume I'm safe. Now my questions:

1. Is this really safe enough?
2. What kind of settings would Gufw need to be able to use it AND use my mini-network for printing? I have no experience whatsoever with firewall rules and settings.

Networking :: Unable To Reconnect To Wireless AP Using The Same Settings?

Mar 3, 2010

Sometimes I am unable to reconnect to my wireless AP using the same settings that worked the previous day, and that has me stumped. I think it's due to me switching access points (using different authenticatin) since the last connection.

1) After I enter iwconfig/iwpriv commands to connect my wireless usb card (edimax) to my WPA2 network, what process performs the negotiation with the AP, and is there a way to see status debug messages from that process so that I can see if there was a successful negotiation? (so I can see if the password is correct, etc).

2) Is there a way to manually invoke that process to re-attempt to negotiate? Or must I assume that happens automatically with any iwconfig/iwpriv command?

3) Is there a simple command that will erase all iwconfig/iwpriv settings so that I can start over with my iwconfig/iwpriv commands?

Networking :: Setup Firewall / Sys1 Is Not Connected To Firewall For Testing Purpose?

May 18, 2010

I am learning to setup firewall in my home for that i have selected four system(sys1,sys2....sys4) for testing .I have configured sys2 to act as a firewall with two NIC. sys3 and sys4 are inside the firewall . sys1 is not connected to firewall for testing purpose.

the IP assignments are follows :

sys1 : ( fedora, not connected to firewall i am thinking, But i am not sure )

IP : 192.168.2.1 ,
gateway : blank
dns1 : blank
dns2 : blank

sys2 firewall ,IPTABLES )
code....

what happened is that sys1(not connected to firewall) can ssh to sys4(connected,inside firewall),since the rules are written not to ssh form sys1 to sys4..

then I came to know whatever the request I give, It directly goes as sys1 --> sys4. Not as sys1-----> sys2(firewall)---> sys4 .and the firewall is not filtering and processing anything for both inbound and outbound (i think it's my mistake some where). the requests are directly going inside without firewall.
