Mar 1, 2010OS CentOS 5.4 I have a DNS server that is logging all named and dns requests to the chrooted named directory. By default named logs to /var/log/messages but I want to isolate all the dns queries and requests to separate files. I know I can add entries to /etc/syslog.conf to "roll" the logs and logrotate should pick them up but fuzzy as to the syntax. I don't know what "tag" to use in the first fieild. for example

The problem is that NONE of my logs, secure, httpd, messages, NONE of them, show any trace of these hacking attempts. They used to show up in secure and apache error logs, but no longer.

May 13, 2010I installed syslog-ng so I can receive remote logs. this is working however since I disabled syslog on my syslog-ng server I am not logging in /var/log/messages cron and some others.locally)I know this is because my syslog-ng.conf only references remote and not local.How can I edit the syslog-ng.conf file so that I can receive remote and local? I tried this however when adding in portions of the default config, I only receive local and not remote logs anymore. I am forwarding my config.

Jan 17, 2010Currently Im having a syslog server that consolidate firewall logs on port 514 udp. Im also having a IDS device that I wish to push its logs to this particular syslog server so that I can retrieve my IDS logs on this server as well.
Is it possible to do so?Having syslog listening on port 514 for both firewall and IDS logs? If it is possible will the logs be recorded in a single log file?Or will it be recorded in a separate log file ie. firewall.log, IDS.log etc?? I wish to have them in separate individual log files or else there will be hard time segregating the log entries in a single file. Can anyone advice on how to achieve this??

Apr 26, 2010For some time now, I have been backing up a windows box (data files only) to a ubuntu machine using the following:
mount -t cifs -o user=xxx,password=xxx //windowsshare/ /mnt/
For the first time I needed to restore some files and found I did not have the correct rights to write to the windows machine.
I had already wasted a whole day trying to map the ubuntu machine from windows and failed so this is not an option.
I have tried adding write rights to several accounts on the windows machine, also tried adding write rights to "everyone", checked both the share permissions, as well as the folder permissions.
I read about chmod, and tried to use the command gksudo to do something but this fails with DISPLAY error. Tried several things to fix this which didn't work and I was just going off on a tangent.
In the end I used a CD ROM to copy the files from one machine to another.
So for next time I need to restore a file, how can I give myself rights to do so?

I scp stuff from my mac to it quite a lot over my local wireless network.At the moment, it holds a .sparsebundle backup of my mac created by SuperDuper! (mac backup application) that I periodically transfer over. I'd like to make this system a little more sophisticated and use Apple's Time Machine to automatically backup to my Ubuntu box if possible.

Feb 24, 2011I'm trying to setup and configure a server entirely with text only run mode 3 on a virtual machine so I can redo my current live server. I'm now trying to set up the firewall of the system using iptables. I've read up on it and came up with the following:
-clear all rules
#iptables -F
-set default policy rules
#iptables --policy INPUT DROP
#iptables --policy FORWARD DROP

Everything above worked for me but just out of interest I looked at my live server which was configured using a GUI. I ran iptables-save and it was pretty much the same but its port open lines read like this:
#iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
so finally my question is do I really need the "-m state --state NEW"? Wouldn't having that drop established connections on those ports? I'm just confused as to what exactly the NEW state is doing and would it make a difference if I didn't include it.

Jan 30, 2011I've been a Xubuntu/Ubuntu/Lubuntu hobby user for about 18 months now. I started using Linux as a way to revive older computers provide a backup and expand my knowledge of computing. The command line was something new to me but as long as I can find detailed directions on how to do what I want I can usually manage. I set up a Samba server for my home shared network and now I'd like to make the shared drives of that server accessible from outside my network. Via ssh or ftp or some program of the like. I'd like to have it user name and password protected. Configurable user rights would be nice. (read/write/delete/etc) As well as novice user friendly.
My end goal is a server with read/write capability that I will be able to access from work or a friends house or anywhere with an Internet connection and my laptop. I understand about port forwarding and have done so with my home network behind an AT&T U-verse router/modem. I've researched openssh and some ftp setups but they seem like they can be difficult. Now for the questions. Is this task something that can be accomplished without a degree in computer networking? Is there a program(s) that would make this a simpler task? Is this more complex than its worth? How would I go about setting up such a thing?
Fedora Networking :: F14 Samba Server With Slow Write Speed
Aug 4, 2011I had a F14 samba server working flawlessly now for a quite time. Unexpectedly about a month ago the write speed slowed down around 64kbit/s and that's really slow. I haven't changed any configs, only updated the server. I've troubleshooted this from many angles:
-It is not a network issue because sftp writes are good.
-It is not a RAID1 issue because write speed from another directory (locally) are good.
So basically samba is the only thing left.
Here's example from smb.conf:
