Ubuntu :: Network Manager Stops Working Under Heavy Load?
Jan 19, 2011
this is with both network manager and WICD, a problem i've had since i got ubuntu - multiple wipes and reinstalls the wifi is supported out of the box, the problem i've randomly run into since installing is, it will randomly stop detecting networks "no networks detected"
i've noticed over time as this as been happening, that it usually happens whenever there is a high load - multiple videos going on multiple tabs, videos queued up etc. its never happened during regular browsing - theres always a lot going on when it happens, almost like it collapses. the only way to fix this, is to quit the manager - shut off the computer (restarting doesnt work) and then it comes back after

My LAN has 2 PCs installed, Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows XP. I run the server on Ubuntu, and client on Windows XP. Because I am doing stress test, so the client will keep sending tons of packets to server.
The strange thing is: After few seconds, the client program crash because of insufficient network buffer, the server is still ok. But after that I cant connect Ubuntu PC anymore until I restart it. And I check the router, the led for the Ubuntu PC is always ON (not blinking), look like it is jam already.

Have a very unusual problem that I am looking at troubleshooting. Only problem is I don't know where to start.I have the following wireless usb device:
Code: Select allBus 002 Device 007: ID 050d:845a Belkin Components F7D2101 802.11n Surf & Share Wireless Adapter v1000 [Realtek RTL8192SU]
Now it is fine when browsing the web, but whenever I download a large file/game from Steam it becomes unresponsive and stops working.I have noticed it happens whenever the download is maxed..which at the moment is at around 5.4mbps on steam.Never get a warning...just internet stops working...no pages can be displayed...The connection never disconnects.I can only get it working again when I unplug it and re insert it back in again.
Things I have tried:
- Returning it to the shop and getting a new one (didn't fix it).
Code: Select allzerocool@hal9000:~$ uname -a
Linux hal9000 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt4-3 (2015-02-03) x86_64 GNU/Linux

I installed openbox and pcman on my old desktop and was able take the desktop ram load from 275mb to 120mb. (openbox, pcman, kupfer, gnome-panel) I was so pleased with the increased headroom and performance that I wanted to do it on my macbook. Usually my macbook has as desktop ram load of about 350mb... which I find excessive as that is heavier than OS X. That's running gnome, nautilus, compiz, and gnome-do at startup.
I performed a similar procedure today to create the same setup on my laptop and... strangely, my ram usage on the desktop is still close to 300mb! I've brought up system monitor and added up the ram of all the processes it detected myself and it only added up to about 50mb. How is it that my desktop is still so heavy in a minimal environment?? (both machines are Karmic 9.10, by the way. The desktop is hardwired to the internet while my laptop uses Wicd)

I am currently using Debian Testing, managing my wireless connection with NetworkManager and the Gnome nm-applet. Both have just been updated: network-manager from 0.8.1-6+squeeze1 to 0.8.2-6 and network-manager-gnome from 0.8.1-2 to 0.8.2-4.On installation of the new packages, I have no problems. However, on a reboot, I can no-longer connect to any wireless connection. I am not prompted on start-up for the password to unlock the Gnome keyring and when I left-click on the nm-applet icon and then click on a network to connect to it, nothing happens.I do not think this is a driver or NetworkManager daemon problem. If I run "nmcli dev wifi" or left-click on the applet icon, NetworkManager seems to scan for wireless networks properly and returns a list including the one I wish to connect to.

I just want to tell laptop users how they can protect their hdd from heavy load cycle count (spin up/down of the hdd) when using battery. If you are not sure then just type this command several times in interval of 1-2 minutes, and you will see how much the hdd head spins down, and up: Code: sudo smartctl --all /dev/sda | grep -i load_cycle.Change /dev/sda with appropriate hdd path for your pc.

I have recently begun contributing to the Folding@Home distributed computing project. Due to oversights in the application's design and to process the most advantageous work units, I need to run this command line app through wine. The application is very CPU/RAM intensive, but it does not put much load on the hard drive. It is multi-threaded and uses up to 100% of all 6 cores in my machine. I run it with a "nice" level of 19 with hopes that it won't slow down my normal desktop use.
Here is the problem... when running this setup, my system will frequently freeze for a fraction of a second and then resume. With the more complicated work units, this can happen 1-2 times per minute. During the freeze, the mouse will stop moving, videos stop playing, music pauses, etc. The system is completely unresponsive. However, each instance only lasts for a very short time. Since this happens so often, my productivity is negatively impacted (and it's very annoying).
I previously ran the native Linux version of F@H without this problem, but that was also processing much less complicated calculations. I have tried with wine 1.2.1 and 1.3.5 with the same results. The application does not have problems running on Windows. It has been suggested that the current Linux CPU scheduler is to blame, but is there anything I can do to resolve this now or work around it?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64-bit on my desktop with a wired internet connection (with no firewall). For the past 2 days, I have observed that1. Firefox randomly throws up errors like "Problem loading page" whenever I click on a hyperlink. When I click on Reload, the page loads up just fine. This has been happening a lot recently..and I do not remember updating anything consciously. By the way, ipv6 is disabled in Firefox.2. The network stops working all of a sudden (usually indicated by the Firefox error). The Autho Eth0 indication is active, but I am unable to connect to any external machine.
3. Needless to say, this error is manifesting itself in apt-get as well. I get "something wicked happened" errors all the time, and am unable to download or install anything. That this is not a problem with the ISP is obvious because I also have Windows (from which I'm typing this, ironically), which is able to access the internet. Is this a bug in Ubuntu 10.10?

I just recently erased my hard drive and installed ubuntu 9.10 all over again. I updated as expected and everything was going well, until, my internet stopped working after maybe 40 mins or so after a successful boot. Now this same thing happens every 40 mins and I have to reboot the computer by forcing my laptop to shut down by holding down the power button. This also made me aware of another problem when restarting or logging off my laptop. The laptop hangs at that terminal-syled screen and the underscore blinks and fails to shut the computer down/log off. I resort to holding down the power button to restart. I am using a wireless connection with WEP key protection.
Atheros network chip
Laptop Acer Aspire 5532
It just happened again..... I am typing now in tomboy notes....
Time to restart again......
I also try to open terminal and it fails to function (after the internet stop working), any reason for that? I would also like to note that the signal strength decreases as time passes by.......

I have a wireless network using this driver:
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0bda:8187 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187 Wireless Adapter
and everything works fine for some time. After a few hours or maybe less (if I push bandwidth to the limit) the Internet freezes. I can't even ping my router. If I disconnect and reconnect either the device or the connection via network manager , it does work for a minute only and then freezes again. If I restart Ubuntu entirely, it works again. But for a while...
It works 100% in Win7 and I have no problem at all there. But I am very annoyed that I cant have reliability in Ubuntu. I want Ubuntu as default.
It has something to do with drivers or an inner variable or buffer or something.
At least, is there any way to reset my network connection without rebooting the OS?
I tried sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart but it gives me: Ignoring unknown interface wlan0=wlan0.

Is there a way to switch a internal card slot from /dev/mmcblk0** to /dev/sd** ? I'm backing up (via rsync) an ebook directory (1.9gb) to sd card and get massive i/o errors, card turning read-only,etc. This is via a built-in slot on a toshiba laptop. When I use a card reader, the card attaches to /dev/sdd1 and all is fine.
This is a new Sid install. The laptop's card slot worked fine under Ubuntu 9.04 and still works if the amounts of data are small. All I can figure is that the mmcblk device dies under a heavy load...

so I've scoured the web and I can't seem to find anyone else having this issue. The issue:
Whenever my box is heavily using the internet, it seems to just wimp out. It shuts off and reboots.
When it's happened:I first deduced the connection to the network connection when I was trying to set up the system. When I tried an upgrade after the first time I installed the system, it crashed, leaving me with broken packages and all kinds of mess. So I decided to start over, and since I then had the network set up, I used the install latest version feature in the installer. If failed again. I battled issue this a couple of times before I opted to do updates in chunks instead of all at once. Success. Then I tried to download an entire website. You see, I had bought the computer to use as a test server for work. I ran wget, I believe. After a lot of recursive downloading, it decided to take another unauthorized break.
Now, I've got a minecraft server running too. It's been working pretty nicely, until lately. I've got a cron job set up to backup the server files with dropbox. Bad, bad, bad. The computer started acting up again, shutting off and rebooting. I figured it was having a hard time uploading to dropbox while simultaneously serving up the game. I moved the cron job from hourly to daily, and haven't had issues all day. Great. Until late tonight. It did it again while we were playing. It's relentless. So I went through the whole process of assessing damage. Luckily no damage. Then I went ahead and ran the dropbox script that didn't get to run while I was performing diagnostics.

I'm having a bizarre problem where my network connection stops working randomly. At first I thought it was a DNS issue since Firefox simply chilled out on "Looking up [hostname]" until it timed out, but after further investigation (pinging IP's, "host" and "dig" being unable to reach servers) it became apparent that I couldn't even access the DNS servers i.e. the Wicked Connection of the East was most sincerely dead.
There are two strange things about this: one, there are no errors except "timeout". The network manager is happy, Firefox is happy until the lookup fails... Two, the failures only start *after* DHCP configuration. DHCP configuration never has any trouble sending or receiving packets. I'm going to try static IP and whatnot to see if that helps, more information later.

After first installing Fedora on my computer, I was having a problem with my programs hanging for about 10-20 seconds, and then starting working again. After a while I discovered that every time it happened, there where some disk activity, and when the disk activity stopped, the programs started working again. The problem also occurred, when I was copying large files. Then the programs would hang until the copy was finished. After some googling around I tried to change the scheduler for SDA from cfq ro deadline, which seemed to solve the problem.
However the problem still seems to occur, if I do something that requires heavy network activity. If I copy a large file from one computer to another or download something using Vuze, all programs becomes unusable until network activity stops again. have 2 computers, which both seems to have the same problem (AMD X2 3800+ and Intel Core I5 750). They are running Fedora 12 and 13 both 64 bit. Both are using Asus motherboards with onboard LAN

There is a tool appeared in repository called ktune; The purpose is to adjust some sysctl.conf settings to improve server speed on servers with heavy load. What is this tool for if one can achieve the same with the configuration file added to system startup? Or ktune is just such file?

I'm a newbie in Linux (ubuntu) environment. Well my prob started as I tried to install several w-lan applications. I tried them out and deleted them again. Till (I don't remember the name of the prog) I finally shoot "network manager". I tried some things like:
Second installation of ubuntu to get back internet.
Downloaded some deb files and installed them in off-line mode.
But it doesn't work because some not satisfiable things happened now I tried to fix over USB live to fix it no chance. What I need is a possibility to install from USB on my first system or boot system one and USB on the same time to use the internet per switching or something like that. Maybe it's possible to update my system wile the USB system is running? Or is there a possibility to use the ubuntu CD and install all needet packages from there because network manager is already in Ubuntu. I think that all OS company's have to think about that , when they deliver a OS that you can choose or afterwords reinstall progs from the original source ...or what?

Right so yesterday my internet worked fine. Today - no connection at all. The light for my cable on the router doesn't even show up. I originally had indicator-network installed, so when the internet first stopped working, I tried a few other options such as tethering to my phone via usb and bluetooth (which I have successfully used in the past). However, these didn't work, and I figured that as connman is still in beta, maybe that was why. So I reinstalled network-manager and network-manager-gnome via a usb stick, uninstalled indicator-network, and rebooted the computer. Still no internet.
When I click on the applet, it says "No network devices are available". This is odd, as I definitely have a network device... it is part of the motherboard. So I thought I'd do the SMARTlan test or whatever it's called. It's part of my BIOS, so I ran that and it returned results that I (kinda) expected: when the cable wasn't plugged in, it returned one set of results. When it was only plugged into my computer (and not the router), it returned another set of results. And when it was plugged into both my computer and the router, it returned a third set of results. So that leads me to believe the cable itself is fine.
And when I move the cable to a different port on the router, nothing changes. The corresponding light still doesn't come on. Network-manager, telling there are no network devices. The BIOS can see the ethernet port and the cable. And the router is functioning perfectly for my parents' computer and my ps3. And I have checked the cable to my computer for physical damage - it follows the same path as the one to my ps3, and on top of that, nothing physical can possibly have happened to it in the last day. This happened once before, except I don't think the network devices were lost.

Fresh install of Fedora 14 from Live cd.Used it for an hour or so, d-loaded some programs, had ti all running great. Wired connection to internet. Had the Network Connection Manager icon in panel. There was an icon saying new updates, alot of them, like 400 or so. Told it to go ahead and up date, left room. Came back hour later was done, said it needed to re boot, so I did. From then on, no internet, not icon, no Network Connection in the drop down list for preferences.
What I have tried:Worked off live cd, again, all works fine, icon, manager, internet all there. In installed version: In terminal, typed service Network Manager, it said unrecognized service.Did yum install network manager. It started to do it, but looked like it was trying to get stuff off mirrors, and of course there is no internet access. error PYCURJ ERROR 6.Of course I can re install, but I figure I will just end up in the same place a few hours from now.

Since an upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04, all wireless devices for me in the plasma network manager applet are not functioning properly on a Dell Latitude E4310. Specific problem: No wireless networks appear in the plasma network manager applet. Manually-configured networks do not connect. A separate CDMA card appears, but cannot establish a connection. The CDMA card does function on 10.10 machines, and formerly worked on this machine. The only wireless 'network' that appears in the plasma network manager widget is 'hidden network'. Manually adding a network and checking "Connect Automatically" does nothing. I attempted a fresh install after the upgrade itself failed the work. There are no networks to click on, and selecting the device itself merely shows the status page.

I've been dual booting Windows 7 and Debian on my desktop ever since. But recently I installed Debian again on a new laptop that I recently bought and unfortunately it's being very different from my first successful installation. The first problem is that Network Manager is not picking up internet on the new laptop. The Wireless tab is grayed out, so I can't click it and look for a new one. I've been using Wired internet since, but if I want to take it to work I have to have it be Wireless-able. Currently my Wireless Card is a Broadcom 4313 802.11 b/g/n which I'm fairly sure is supported. The second problem is installing Firefox. On my first installation it worked fine, and the bin file loaded and everything. However, for this second one that's been a completely different situation and the bin file hasn't worked (by this I mean I can't double click it to open it).

How do I re-enable it?I also have set YAST settings back to their originals with no luck.
