Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Internet Requires Restart

Oct 21, 2010

I am having occasional internet connection problems on startup. 1 out of 5 times that I start my computer, I will have absolutely no internet connectivity, can't ping my router, obtain ip. nothing. Tried re-establishing connection with no luck. Status light on my router displays a slow flash. I restart, problem solved. Not so much a major problem, but irritating at times

Ubuntu Networking :: No Wired Internet - Can't Restart System

Jun 23, 2011

Dell atitude E6420. e1000e: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver - 1.0.2-k2 Firstly, I installed 11.04, 64 bit, I have wired internet but can not restart; then I switched to 10.04 LTS 64 bit, I can restart but I lost my wired internet. For both situation, wireless internet works well. I update the "linux-image-generic-lts-backport-maverick", then the wired internet works, it is fine. But, I can not restart the system, just same as 11.04. How to fix it?

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Share Requires Unmount/Remount After Restart

Aug 4, 2011

I recently built a computer for a friend that is only going to be used to run a network share.

The problem I am running into is that whenever the computer restarts the share, while visible, cannot be accessed by the two Windows 7 laptops in the house.

If I run 'sudo umount /media/storage' followed by 'sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/storage' the once visible but inaccessible share is now accessible.

I do not understand why this would be. I have added the line 'usershare owner only = false' to my smb.conf file.

Ubuntu Networking :: No Auto Connection To Wired Ethernet On Restart?

Nov 30, 2010

Just noticed that auto connection to my wired ethernet is not being established after restarts I'm making. Never recall this in the past. I do get an auto connect when I shutdown and restart. I'm using 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx.

Also have noticed that nearly every upgrade over the past week or so is calling for restart to complete the upgrade. Can there be any unwanted problems in doing several upgrades over a period of several days before doing the restart? I'd like to think not.

As you can imagine these two issues together are causing some lost time.

Ubuntu Networking :: Computer Loses Internet Connection And Requires Many Reboots To Re-connect

Sep 5, 2010

I am using Ubuntu Studio 10.04 LTS and I am experiencing the following problem: my computer loses its Internet connection and appears to require several reboots to re-establish an Internet connection.

As suggested on a similar post relating to wireless connection loss, I supply the output of sudo lshw -C network

*-network
description: Ethernet interface
product: NetLink BCM5789 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express
vendor: Broadcom Corporation

[Code].....

Note that I have REMOVED my wireless card in case there was some kind of hardware conflict or failure. I am using a wired connection through a Linksys WRT54G router that is supplying an Internet connection to another computer and an IP phone without any problem.

When I run the command network-admin (or select System > Administration > Network) I can see only 3 tabs (General, DNS and Hosts) It seems that the Connections tab has disappeared (and I believe this happened when I upgraded from Ubuntu 9/Karmic Koala). If I click Help it shows me that there should be 4 tabs, not 3.

The connection dropping began prior to my decision to upgrade. In fact it took several attempts to complete the upgrade. Should I attempt to re-install the upgrade? I am not sure how to do it without losing my connection. When I visit System > Administration > Update Manager, I am informed that my system is up to date.

I just installed openSUSE 11.2 KDE via LiveCD on my desktop computer and have been loving it. The problem is that it will randomly freeze and requires a restart. I've tried booting up in safe-mode, but it still does it. Also, when it does, the screen flickers and flashes in and out before it freezes. And before anyone asks, yes, I have my NVIDIA drivers.

Ubuntu :: Hanging Desktop Sometimes - Requires A SYSREQ Reboot To Restart It

May 11, 2011

Any time i try to start my computer from a cold state (off for 1+ hours), the first time i start it, it hangs and requires a SYSREQ reboot to restart it. When it hangs, all the window decorations disappear and the background vanishes. The main menu opens, but click on things does nothing. clicking shutdown only brings up the normal shutdown window with the text replaced with squares.

Thought it was my hdd (i/o errors and for some reason the HDD remounts r/o at this point), but e2fsck shows no issue.

Thought it may be an IRQ conflict, so i enabled MSI on all my PCI Devices.

Thought it was the 'green' aspect of my WD Drive, so i set the spindown time to 5 hours using hdparm config file. startup messages printed to screen confirm it is working.

Also, due to the numerous hard resets, the system is detecting a 'previous i/o error to the superblock'. Should recovering the SB from a backup be beneficial?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Networking - Connection Works But No Internet

Jun 1, 2011

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop on my desktop in dual boot with Windows 7.

Heres my problem, I am unable to connect to the Internet even though my wired Ethernet connection says it is connected normally. The wierd thing about this is that I also have a wireless card in my desktop and when I connect through that I am able to connect to the Internet. I am connecting to a router that is functioning as a repeater to my main router/cable modem. I have tried to solve this myself but am having no luck. Ironically, earlier today suddenly my ethernet connection worked for a few minutes without me modifying anything.

The output of some terminal commands are below.

However a pint to that ip address (my router) is successful.

Hosts.allow and hosts.deny are both fine (not blank but no entries)

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 Wired Internet Not Working

May 4, 2010

I recently did a fresh install of 10.04 from 9.04 and since then I am unable to use Internet. However my ethernet connection is working fine, as I am able to login to modem and check configuration. I reinstalled twice, downloaded fresh 64-bit & 32-bit and also followed kernel update steps as in few forum posts, but no joy. The firefox is throwing an error "The connection has timed out". My internet connection is working fine as I am able to use my Windows Laptop to post this message. I checked system > administration > hardware drivers and couldn't find any unsupported hardwares.I had similar issue when upgrading to 9.10, hence stayed on 9.04. When I looked at LTS image, I couldn't resist and cleaned up 9.04.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connect To The Internet ('Wired')

Mar 26, 2011

I am a Ubuntu novice who recently shifted completely to Ubuntu 10.04 from Windows 7 on my Dell Inspiron Mini.

1. I am able to connect to the internet ('Wired') at home but when i plug in the internet cable at work it is not connecting. It gives me the message 'Unplugged, you are now disconnected'.

2. I tried installing the Wicd network manager. Even though there are wireless networks in range it doesnt show me the wireless networks (like it used to show in wiindows).

I have read through a long list of commands in the forums of commands to be executed and executed them all but couldnt connect. Is there anything basic that I am overlooking?

I thought that wired network should work once I plug in a network cable irrespective of the place. How come I am unable to connect to the network at work? I used to have a windows 7 partition and the net connected plug and play when i was in the windows side. I dont want to install Windows just for the internet at work again.

OpenSUSE Install :: System Freezes And Requires A Hard Restart

Feb 22, 2010

Initially everything. Then came the problem, the system starts up fine but then after a few hours freezes, monitor powers off and it wont accept commands from the keyboard or mouse. Meanwhile the lights (caps lock, numeric and scroll) on the keyboard blink. The power light is still on and i can hear the hard disk turning.

I have to forcefully turn the power off and restart but can freeze again after random periods.I do lengthy and demanding computations and its common for the PC to run for weeks without turning it off.

Fedora Networking :: Wired Networking Not Connecting In 12 With Windows Internet Connection Sharing?

Jan 16, 2011

I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.

Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Connect To Internet On Wifi Or Wired?

Mar 20, 2010

I've been running ubuntu for about 6 months, so i'm still abit of a newbie at linux but heres what im having issues with:I'm having troubles connecting to the internet on ubuntu, i have no problems connecting on xubuntu on the same machine. I can connect to my network but i cant access the internet on firefox or snaptic or any of that, but the weird thing is i can successfully ping address' in the terminal. I can also connect to my router config page in firefox using 192.168.0.1.

My internet worked perfectly about a month ago on this ubuntu install, so i cant figure out what i did to make it stop working. I think it may have something to do with the/etc/resolv.conf file because it only exists as /etc/resolv.conf.tmp and when i run "sudo dhclient wlan0" (or eth0) it says:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo dhclient wlan0

1)"ifconfig -a" gave 2 devices eth0 and wlan0.
2)"pppoeconf" was unable to detect any ethernet cards.
3)Each time I plug in the LAN cable , the network icon would say "connecting" and ultimately result in "disconnected. Now in offline mode".My ethernet device is Realtek PCIe RT8101E/RTL102E (rev 02).

I also tried to install the realtek driver though I was not confident whether I did it correct.

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Setup Wired Internet Connection

Jun 2, 2010

I have BIG troubles trying to set up wired internet connection in Ubuntu! To be able to connect to the internet I have to enter my MAC address, 2 IPs, netmask and 2 DNS address. When I try to edit the default internet connection eth0 with my correct information, the minute I enter my MAC address and save the changes the network manager creates new internet connection with wrong data and use it instead! I can't select the correct internet connection from the top bar where the internet icon is, because it is just not there. The only connection that I can choice is the new default one with the wrong data! If I try to create new separate internet connection with my correct data the same thing happens! The moment I enter my MAC address and save it, the internet connection disapears from the list of internet connections in the internet area in the top bar and I can't select it. I tried googling it, but with no luck I think that if I set up my connection trough the terminal everything will be ok

Ubuntu Networking :: Set Up A Wired Internet Connection - AMD 64bit 10.04

I have had the exact same set up 10.04 on the same machine connecting to the net with no problems. I had upgraded from an earlier version.

This time with a fresh install from disk the network manager does not see any connections. How can I get the manager to recognise the network and connect to the net?

I realise that it would help if I posted up the output of some commands in a terminal but I am writing this on my phone and can not cut and paste large chunks of text. I can only hope for some advice until I can get to a computer with a working connection.

Ubuntu 10.04 AMD dual core 64 bit with wired 10 meg broadband.

How can I get the network manager to see the connection

How can I find the MAC address?
