Debian Configuration :: Resolving Host - Connection When Using Browser Or Downloading Is Noticeably Slower Than When Using Windows

Mar 8, 2010

I just installed a dual boot XP/Debian 5.0.4 setup on my Dell 5100 laptop. I now have constant problems with "resolving host" when using Debian. The connection when using a browser or downloading is noticeably slower than when using Windows or my Ubuntu install on my desktop. Also, whenever using the Debian install on my laptop, both it and my desktop, which both connect through the same Linksys router, constantly show "resolving host" (Chrome browser) until it just timeouts. Rebooting the DSL modem sometimes fixes it for a while (although it's still slow even then), but it eventually happens again. Turn off the laptop/switch to the XP OS on it, and the problems disappear on both the laptop and desktop. Is this a known problem for Debian 5.0.4?

Debian Configuration :: When Open A Web Browser - Can't Resolve The Host Name

Mar 29, 2011

I've just installed Debian Squeeze from a live CD. When I open a web browser (be it iceweasel or epiphany) and try to go to google.com, it tells me it can't resolve the host name. [Edit: They do, however, allow me to go anywhere on debian.org, minus the search feature] I also get the same error when I try to go to my website running on a local server. However, when I type the server's IP address (192.168.0.10), it goes to the website fine. Basically, any program I run that needs to resolve a host name returns an error, with the exception of the host command:

I've tried changing my DNS server IP from 192.168.0.1 (my router, configured to provide DNS) to 192.168.1.254 (my internet modem, also configured to provide DNS). That didn't help any. Then I changed my DNS server IP to the same one used by the modem, and now everything works.

I've tried googling my way out of the issue, and I've found where someone had the same issue as I've got and fixed it by adding "blacklist ipv6" to their /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file, but that didn't work for me.

So, recap: Why does resolving domain names fail for certain applications (except the "host" program) when the DNS server IP is that of my router or modem (which works fine for all of my other computers), but suddenly works when I point the computer straight to my ISP's DNS servers, and how can I permanently fix the problem?

Ubuntu :: Web Browser Much Slower Than Windows?

Aug 13, 2011

I'm posting this here because I have no idea how to address this issue. I have an Ubuntu 11.04 with Windows XP on VirtualBox, Firefox 5 on both machines (virtual and real).I thought my connection was slow when I realized that the browser in VB was much faster than the one in Ubuntu. The problem doesn't seem to be on firefox because Chrome also is slow (I haven't checked Chrome in XP-VB).When I type an address in Firefox Ubuntu it takes a long time to show the page and sometimes the whole browser gets stuck for somewhere around a minute.

Networking :: Windows 7 Intermittent - Resolving Host Aliases Against BIND 9.6.2?

Jan 15, 2011

I have a Windows 7 professional x64 pc that intermittently fails to resolve host aliases. The nameserver is a Fedora 11 system running bind 9.6.2-p2. Its cannonical name is trixter.intranet.org, and it serves several web sites, each with a different host alias: hg.intranet.org, svn.intranet.org, bugzilla.intranet.org, etc.

Occasionally, the Windows pc will be unable to find any of the aliased hosts, even when it can find the canonical name. The aliases will be un-resolvable for a period of several minutes, and then, with no intervention, they can be found again. Trixter can always resolve the aliases to itself.

Even stranger, when I use Cygwin from the problematic Windows 7 PC, it CAN resolve the hosts. I can ping hg.intranet.org from a Cygwin shell, but not from a cmd.exe window. Administrator privileges make no difference.

Debian Configuration :: Slower Than Usual Boot In Jessie

Feb 22, 2016

I've recently noted that the boot process in my Jessie installation is occasionally taking longer than usual, not dramatically as in "really hanging", but still noticeably slower, during which some messages are printed along the lines of

Code: Select alla starting job is running (2 of 5) and also after that, once lightdm (I'm using the MATE desktop) comes up the screen gets painted slower as well.

Unfortunately, once the system is up and running there's no longer trace in the logs (either traditional syslogs or journalctl) of such messages, however what comes to mind is that I've just recently enabled persistent logging in systemd: could this be the reason of such (occasional) slower boot process?

Other than that, what else could cause such behaviour? What should I eventually check to ensure things are OK?

Ubuntu Networking :: Resolving Host Problem

Apr 30, 2010

I have a strange problem with wireless internet connection. We have 3 computers, 2 of them with Win 7 and 1 with Ubuntu 9.10 + Win XP.

Now if all three computers are connected to the internet through wireless router, the computer with Ubuntu 9.10 frequently fails to resolves hosts using various web browsers. I have to disconnect and reconnect to the router to get internet back but it only works for a maximum of 1 minute before it fails again. If the 2 computers with Win 7 logs out from wireless connection then the Ubuntu 9.10 machine works just fine for long periods.

If i boot with Win XP internet works perfect even when the other computers are connected but i really want to use Ubuntu 9.10. The wireless chip is an Atheros 9285.

Fedora Networking :: Resolving Host Names To IP Address ?

Jul 27, 2010

At work we run DHCP. hostnames have the format: computername.city.mycompany.com

I have a laptop runing Fedora 13 and a desktop I use for backups, etc. My laptop is named copernicus. Desktop is named galileo. If ping either hostname from itself I get back the localhost IP address. If I ping the fully resolved hostname it tells me unknown host. The desktop is exporting an NFS share I use for backing up work data. I need the laptop to be able to resolve host names to mount the share since we use DHCP. The desktop is dual boot and if it is booted into windows my laptop can resolve the hostname properly. What do I need to do in Fedora to get it to register a hostname with the DNS and/or DHCP server? Should the domain and the search path below both say the same thing?

Here is resolv.conf on the laptop (I am at home). The desktop looks the same, except for a different nameserver. Both computers can resolve other hostnames, just not each other.

Networking :: Internal Host Names Resolving Through External DNS?

Feb 6, 2011

I just set up my first ever bind9 DNS server running on ubuntu server 10.04. This server is also my gateway/dhcp server.

Here is what is weird: If I do a dig @8.8.8.8 dschuett-lmtl.scs.local from any of my clients it resolves?!?! Dig shows that it got the answer from MY Bind9 DNS server (and NOT Google's of course), but why is it still resolving when I'm telling it to use and external DNS server?

The other weird thing is that the SAME EXACT dig command above does NOT resolve internal host names if I do it from the Bind9 DNS server. - Which is what i would expect SHOULD be happening if done from the client machines...

Here are the dig results:

From any internal client:

Fedora :: 12 Browser Download Slower Than XP

Apr 28, 2010

I have a dual boot machine with Fedora 12 and XP SP2.

Recently I tested download performance using www.speedtest.net. Using seamonkey on XP, i got 22 Mbps on my Comcast ISP. Not bad! However I then tried the same test on Fedora 12 with F12 seamonkey and got 16 Mbps. Thinking it must just be seamonkey, I tried the F12 Firefox and got 12 Mbps

This seems like a pretty big difference. I checked around on google and found several threads decying slower mozilla performance on Linux. I tried the suggestions to turn off ipv6 support, but there was not much improvement.

Debian Configuration :: ProFTPd Configuration - Use To Host MySQL Databases And A Few Websites

Nov 18, 2010

I am having no luck configuring ProFTPd on a Debian Lenny production server we use to host our MySQL databases and a few websites. I had originally set it up so I could login and manage our internal sites, but I have the need to allow a few clients in to access their sites that we host. I am trying to root the users in their site directory, which would be "/sites/www.whatever.com/".

It just hit me while typing this. Is it possible to create a user without a shell to prevent login via SSH and set the home folder to /sites/whatever instead of /home/username? That would allow me to continue operating with my current configuration and root them in their site while preventing SSH logins.

Ubuntu Networking :: 25% Slower Than Win7 - Browser Firefox

Jun 17, 2011

Just installed the latest 11.04 64bit ubuntu, using std cd install alongside windows7, ticking the "add all extras" option, to ensure I got all the latest drivers etc.. The pc is brand new

Acer emachines E644 - AMD 2 Core C-50
3Gb DDR3 mem
500 Gb hard drive

Pre-installed: 64bit Win 7 home premium I've literally changed nothing in win7 other than using wubi to install ubuntu 1st time around (ubuntu appears as a win program - and was un-installed as such). Note: It is too late to now check, but......... under wubi/win7 I had no sense that the browser firefox was running slow - i didn't do a speedtest.net cos of other priorities (and it seemed fine). On advice, I started again (new partitions etc). The Problem: Ubuntu is now 25% slower (broadband) than Win7! Actually, it feels worse than that - more like it was on my previous lap top that had 512Mb ram running xp. Here are the results after switching os's a couple of times.

[Code]....

Firefox managed one spurious result of 5.89, but the graph (on the speedtest display) was absolutely all over the shop (like it's overall results). Compare that to iExplorer - total stability, and in fact, more like 30% faster + a much better ping. Anyway, I guess you know all this, I've seen that plenty of others have noticed this speed drop in the past, so:

Fedora :: FC-11 Networking - Browser Takes About 20seconds Before Loads Page - Not Reading Or Resolving DNS Correctly

Aug 9, 2009

After installing FC11 on my Mac Mini intel terminals, I noticed the network config GUI is completely broke, So I continued with a hand configuration.

Everything seems ok eth0 is up , it has the correct IP, DNS and default gateway, but browser quieries take forever to load.

E.g. if I type Google in the browser it takes about 20seconds before it loads the page.

To add insult to injury, I have a 16Mbit/s Down 2.5Mbit/s uplink. the other 10 or so rackservers on the network responds fast, so it is nothing to do with the network or connection. They all run FC7-9.

The problem is squarely with FC11 and must be some bug not reading or resolving DNS correctly.
Anyone have an idea how I can figure this out with FC-11.

It seems to be the worst FC distro.

I generally was happy with all FC6-9, but 11 really sucks (the ppc version wont even install on my ppc terminals)

That the Mighty Mouse Wireless, worlks out of the box is very nice though, but that is all.

Debian Configuration :: WiFi Connection Which Then Is Sent To A Wired Connection

Sep 22, 2015

The situation: The office has a WiFi network on one DSL line, which is used for our VoIP call center, and a wired network for our internal network and the majority of web surfing/traffic . Part of the office must be temperature controlled/monitored - we have a rather nice digital thermometer which is WiFi enabled.I have a Debian Wheezy box with a WiFi card and ethernet connection

What I'm trying to accomplish:Connect wifi enabled thermometer to WiFi network so it can automatically send temp updates (currently I have to do it manually via USB)Have the Wheezy box accept the downloaded file then send it to a back up server in the wired network

Side things that may be useful : Prefer to use wired connection for internet and apt and suchWiFi connection will really just be used for connecting to the thermometer

This [URL] .... topic got me thinking that there might be a way to bring the two networks together, but I don't know if that will wreak havoc on things. I know, the Windows and Mac OS don't like having ethernet and wifi at the same time, might Linux be better for this?

v&n had this to offer in the prior thread [URL] .... which I'll be doing more research on.

Networking :: Iptables Configuration On Debian Dmz Host?

Jul 6, 2010

I am trying to set up a DMZ host - that is, one multifunctional PC between the WAN and the LAN. I've started with a basic router, and expanding upon that as the need arises. I am currently trying to gain access (from the WAN) to a website hosted on one of the servers in the LAN, but I am having trouble accessing the host from the WAN; I think my iptables configuration may be too restrictive. On the DMZ host, I'm using Debian (Etch). I have setup dhcp3-server, a script to configure iptables and pound (reverse-proxy). The (virtual) machine has 4 network cards: eth0, eth1, eth2, eth3; eth0 is the WAN, eth1 through eth3 serve 3 different virtual LANs.

All machines in the LAN (except one windows 2008 server - I might want to address that problem later) get their IP adresses correctly via dhcp from the DMZ host. All machines on the LAN can access the internet (including the 2008 server if I configure it manually) as they should. If I access http://localhost on the DMZ host, pound reports "The service is not available. Please try again later." - as it should.

I can ping the DMZ host from the WAN on 10.0.0.79 However, if I try to access the DMZ host from the WAN (http://10.0.0.79) I get "Unable to connect" from firefox. I'm sure this is not a pound problem, so I think it's in the iptables, or maybe I should be installing some extra software that I'm unaware of.
