View 3 RepliesWhen originally installing 11.04 I had problems getting my Ralink 5390 wireless card to work.
Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.
I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.
I have been looking around the forums searching for similar problems, it seems not only me had this problem. About a month ago I did a regular update via Upd Manager. The next day - no wired connection.Still managable, since the local library has wireless. Now that won't work either.Just after I upgraded from Jaunty, I accidentally removed NetwMngr from the top right corner of the screen, but that should not have anything to do with how the program works, right? I now cannot reach NM, if I run it from the terminal, nothing happens visibly.

Installed Windows XP and then Ubuntu 10.10 to do dual boot. everything works fine in Windows XP.In Ubuntu 10.10 I had issues connecting to Internet(Through Wirelss), I was able to rectify this issue by dsiable ipv6 from firefox about:config and setting true to network.dns.disableIPv6. After this I was able to connect to internet and browse websites from Firefox. But I am having Issues with Evolution Mail(Connection Timed Out) and Google Talk Client(Connection Timed Out).Empathy Internet Messaging gets connected fine.I was wondering if I will have to disable IPv6 System wide and hence I added the following lines to /etc/sysctl.conf

I had an Ubuntu Server 32 bit installation and everything was working fine. Now that I installed Ubuntu Server 64bit on a new drive in the same machine, the ethernet card is not working!! This is insane cause when I put the hard disk with the 32bit installation back and booting from it, the ethernet card is working without any problems but in the 64bits installation it is not shown at all using "ifconfig -a"
lspci output:
Quote:

How can I check which module is being loaded in the 32bits installation to try to load it manually in the 64 bits installation?
I can connect to the internet with wired connection. The switch for the device is on but this command "sudo lshw -C network" has the following results:

I have a strange problem for internet. My clients (winxp - S2) can't get internet.Let me explain my scenerios. Fedora 10 with lan (eth0) having direct internet from dsl model, client (XP service pack 2) can use samba shares using dhcp (wlan0) installed in Fedora 10 box. client can ping my linux box.Now problem is: client (dosbox) can ping the google ip address (i.e ping 74.125.39.106) but can't use 'ping www.google.com'. That means ping with ip works for internet from my client. My linux box can. I can use internet from FC10 but can't use iexplorer from my client to have internet. I have enable ipmasquarding in Firewall and dhcpd is running on wlan0 for dynamic ip address of my clients. Can someone suggest me what kind of problem having I? What should i do to success iexplorer for internet? what possibly am i missing?
View 3 Replies View RelatedOK so I set up a server yesterday and got ndiswrapper loaded on it with the appropriate driver, I edited the /etc/network/interfaces file to contact my router with it's MAC address, WEP Key, etc... So the problem is I can ping addresses like Google and Ubuntu Forums but I can't use apt-get to install or update packages. When I try sudo apt-get update I get a whole bunch of Code: W: Failed to fetch <address>Temporary Failure resolving <address>My Wireless interface is wlan0 and also I can ping my server from my other computer running Linux and my server can ping that computer too.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just started having a problem with my 10.04 laptop a few days ago, maybe Thursday, last week. When the computer is plugged into my home network (standard 192.168.1.1 sort of IPs) it works fine, but when I try to connect to my work network (130.15.90.XX) I am unable to pick up an IP. The router in my office is working fine, all the windows boxes can connect.
I've also noticed that when the computer is plugged in at work the notification icon for the networking indicates it is looking for a wireless connection (rather than the normal up/down arrows), even if wireless is deactivated
I can set a static IP in /etc/network/interfaces and everything works, so it seems to be a DHCP problem?
I can't upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 because it said that there's a problem with my network connection. When there's none, since I am typing this now.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64-bit on my desktop with a wired internet connection (with no firewall). For the past 2 days, I have observed that1. Firefox randomly throws up errors like "Problem loading page" whenever I click on a hyperlink. When I click on Reload, the page loads up just fine. This has been happening a lot recently..and I do not remember updating anything consciously. By the way, ipv6 is disabled in Firefox.2. The network stops working all of a sudden (usually indicated by the Firefox error). The Autho Eth0 indication is active, but I am unable to connect to any external machine.
3. Needless to say, this error is manifesting itself in apt-get as well. I get "something wicked happened" errors all the time, and am unable to download or install anything. That this is not a problem with the ISP is obvious because I also have Windows (from which I'm typing this, ironically), which is able to access the internet. Is this a bug in Ubuntu 10.10?
Wired and wireless networking have been working flawlessly for years on my HP Compaq 6710b laptop. Several weeks ago, after an automatic update via the update manager, my wired network stopped working. I did not notice it directly, since my wireless connection took it over. I only noticed it when I had to work in an office where I didn't know the wireless password.Since then, I have been trying several things and searched several forums. It is hard to find any troubleshooting information about wired networking, as most of the problems seem to occur with wireless.
I did verify that there is no hardware problem. My laptop is dual boot and when I boot the other operating system, the wired network works without problems (as does the wireless.)My Ubuntu version is Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS. My kernel version is 2.6.32-25-generic i686. I hope anybody can help me getting my wired network working again.
I installed the latest release of Kubuntu on to my dell laptop about 3 days ago, I fell asleep last night and woke up to my laptop not being connected to my wireless(it was when I fell asleep, it didnt reboot or anything overnight an dno one touched it), so I plugged in an ethernet cable and it still did not detect an internet connection, then finally it connected through my phones mobile internet via Usb.
However none of the built in networking devices are working, I have them all enabled. My WLAN Interface says "Unmanaged" and Networking interface complains the cable is unplugged even when it is not.I know you guys will need some additional info from me to help me.I just used my mobile broadband to install Wicd network manager but thats just a temporary fix, as it doesnt fix my ethernet issue and I want to be able to use the network manager itself to manage my networks.
Previously I have had Linux installed on my laptop (OpenSUSE, Ubuntu) with no problems as far as wireless networking in concerned. Due to wanting to play a certain game (which I have since grown tired of), I reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Recently I have booted up to live DVDs of PC-BSD, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and OpenSUSE 11.2 and I cannot get wireless networking working.
At home I use WPA2 Personal. I put in the passphrase into NetworkManager (the same as I do for Windows), and the computer gets an IP address from the router (I use 10.3.5.x at home). The problem is, I cannot connect to the Internets. If I do "ping -c 3 cnet.com" it gives me the proper response of 216.239.113.101, but if I try to go to cnet.com, I get a page cannot be displayed in Firefox.
I get this error for every website. I don't understand it seeing that I can ping the websites, but even if I put the IP address in the URL, it still doesn't load the page. What am I doing wrong? Everything is dynamic, as in Win7. But everything works perfectly in Windows, but no such luck in Linux. I know it must be something simple, but I'm at a loss. Seeing that I no longer play Star Trek Online, I'd like to put Linux or BSD back on my laptop, but no Internet is not an option.
I can't get my NAS drive to mount using NFS in etc/fstabcan anyone see anything wrong ?92.168.1.111:/mnt/IDE1/music /mnt/musicbox nfs intr 0 0this gives me "mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified" error messageI can connect at the command prompt, but only if I don't use the "-t nfs" option !! this gives me the same error.I have all the necessary pacakages installed and as I say I can connect at the command pompt using Code:sudo mount -v 192.168.1.111:/mnt/IDE1/music /mnt/musicbox -w

View 9 Replies View RelatedNow I access to Internet through ADSL router. At the same time I want to run some service on my ubuntu, so I need a static LAN IP such as 192.168.1.100. I use network-manager to config my network. But the problem is that if I click DSL to access the Internet. My eth0's static ip setting will be change. So I have to manually change it back to 192.168.1.100 by using ifconfig. My problem is that is there any method that I can get the DSL and LAN static IP work together without typing ifconfig cmd every time?

FTP is not working through a gateway and I think I found that I need to modprobe ip_masq_ftp. However, when I do try to load ip_masq_ftp I get the error: FATAL: Module ip_masq_ftp.o not found. My question is: how do I get ip_masq_ftp?More questions: Do I have to build a new kernel? If I do need to build a new kernel do I just include the ip_masq_ftp module or are there other modules that I need?

View 5 Replies View RelatedFor the past almost year, once in a while my wifi won't work.At home,I use an ethernet cable. When I go out, or am out of town, about 1/3 times the wifi won't connect, and won't even find access points. Once this happens, no matter how many times I restart, the wifi won't work. The ONLY way I can get it to work again is if I reboot with the ethernet cord plugged into the laptop and into a router/switch/hub. My neighbor (the one who got me into Ubuntu) is a pretty experienced linux network admin who looked a my laptop and has no idea what is causing this. I've attached my syslog log entry for the last time this happened. Does anyone know why this is? I LOVE ubuntu but I may need to switch back to Windows because I NEED wifi to work. You will see in the logfile I tried connecting to two different APs. The one that always works is the second one, called linksys.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIn the wake of a spate of posts complaining that wireless is not working in 10.04 here is mine. I'm on a (relatively old) AMD Duron 1.5Ghz, 1.5G memory with a VIA KM-266 motherboard. Wireless worked fine in 9.10. With a fresh install of the new 10.04, the usb wireless adapter is not detected, the tab to add a new wireless connection is grayed out, starting the KNetworkManager (did I got the name right?) does nothing (that is, no application starts), etc.note: if you are wondering how I am accessing the internet, I just fired up the 9.10 live CD, which as you can imagine is not the most practical thing in the world. Here is the info. I have been fight to get this WOL working for the pass 2 weeks or so and I have had little success.Thecomputer I am currently trying to get to wake from a powered off state is a Inspiron 600m with a ethernet controller BCM4401-B0. It has WOL in the BIOS, and I have enabled it. I have tried on two different routers, a ActionTec GT704-WG and a Verizon 7501 and neither worked.Right now I just want to get it to work within the local network, but I have also tried from an external location with port forwarding set up. So far I have used a packet sniffer on Inspiron 600m to confirm that that the magic packets are getting to the computer. When I have the computer off, I haven't had any luck yet getting it to turn on. I have been using wakeonlan and I have been sending the packets to 192.168.0.255 or 192.168.200.255, depending on the router I am using.
