Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Not Working On Lucid 10.04
May 20, 2010
I had Samba shares (a public folder and a printer) running fine on Jaunty 9.10, when upgraded to 10.04 it stopped working.
I've tried several tips and following different threads to no avail.
when I run smbclient -L localhost or else smbclient -L 127.0.0.1 I get:
Code:
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_DOMAIN
when I run smbclient -L TKA I get:
Code:
Connection to TKA failed (Error NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_REFUSED)
Here is my current smb.conf:
[Code]....
I installed samba4 but did't do any difference, so I uninstalled that. Reinstalled SAMBA and the config tool for samba several times. No difference.

In ubuntu client with 10.04 I get a message stating the place can not be mounted and that it failed to obtain the sharing list from the server. (something like that, my client computer is in spanish). In winxp I got:
\TKA is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The network path was not found.
I installed samba4 but did't do any difference, so I uninstalled that. Reinstalled SAMBA and the config tool for samba several times. No difference.
my smb.conf file is attached as txt file. I couldn't post directly because the forum editor detects some lines as links to other sites .

Samba doesn't seem to disconnect on shutdown except by timing out, causing a loooong Lucid shutdown. (I can disconnect manually before shutdown by unmounting the Samba shares, and shutdown is then very fast.) Apparently Network Manager is somehow involved. I've installed a NM shutdown Samba script which works for the first user account, but not for the second user account (which was created and then put into the admin group).

I have Samba share setup on my Laptop running Lucid Lynx, for my home network, wireless The copy speed for my movies, when I access them from Windows laptop is too pathetic. Took 22 min to copy around ~1.6GB of data, giving me a speed of only 1.2 MB/s
Haven't seen nething that bad What settings do I have on my server which can improve the copy speed ??Smb.conf is pretty simple and default
Code:
[global]
workgroup = WORKGROUP
netbios name = scooby-laptop
server string = "ScoobyDo server (Samba, Ubuntu)"
dns proxy = no
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m

Since "upgrading" (ha!) to lucid I have had a number of problems that I am working my way through. The latest is accessing samba shares from a Win7 PC. It takes minutes to open the requested share from the Windows 7 PC. File transfers, once the directory is accessed, can be measured in bytes. It is an absolute trickle.
AFAIK the smb.conf is unchanged and, in any case, there is no problem accessing the shares from another linux PC.

i'm really frustrated with ubuntu the last little while. i thought things would be better but its hard to stay optimistic when nothing works. My wife's laptop an MSI A6000-029US has an nVidia chipset [MCP79 (rev b1) according to lspci in lucid].i expected the RaLink RT3090 not to work out of box.. but the Ethernet controller for the wired connection doesn't work either.i can't get this thing online to update it. the syslog says:

I have created a Samba share, using the fantastic Webmin tool. I have a network media player which can connect to my router, and then access windows (samba) shares. Most of the time, it works fine - it's able to stream HDTV wirelessly across the network. However, every so often, it just stops working ... the media player sees :
Network, then
WORKGROUP, then
FILESERVER-1 (machine name), then
Media (share name), then
Video (subdir, then
TV_Shows (subdir), then
MyShow.AVI ... just hangs
if I use the Webmin tool, I see multiple samba connections all from the media player. Restarting samba seems to have no effect. The only way to fix it, is to reboot.
logfile I can check, or a setting I can tweak to fix this issue ?
When it get like this, trying to access the share from a windows machine, just gives me an error saying it can't find the machine. But when it's rebooted, it works fine.
I have mapped the "nobody" linux user to "guest" which is what the media player is defaulted to login with (it's primarily sold as a "Windows" media player), and using Webmin I have assigned the "nobody" user read-only rights to the samba share. It worked fine for 6 months, until I added this new drive.

Been searching for hours and looked at several other threads but still can't figure this out. We have 4 folders being shared from a Ubuntu 10.4.2 LTS Server using Samba. A couple days ago two computers in the office lost access to these shares. The other computers in the office are fine. So far as I know nothing has changed on the server. I can putty into the server still but I can't map a drive or open a window through run (\server_nameetc).
I've also tried disabled iptables on the server and windows firewall on the the windows xp machines. Still no luck. What am I doing wrong? Like I said, so far as I know there have been no changes to the server whatsoever. One day it was working and the next it just stops.

after having tried out almost all suggestions found here and elsewhere on the internet, i'm somewhat at my wits end The situation: I'm running Kubuntu 32Bit Version (at the mom 10.4) on a HP-Compaq 6735s (AMD Processor, Vanilla 32Bit Install). My first Install was last year with 9.4 and the Broadcom 4322 wireless worked like a charm after installing the proprietary STA-driver under System -> Hardware Drivers. As the update didn't work out really without glitches, i did a fresh install and lost my wireless. I tried various combinations and tutorials but to no avail. My card is found, the driver installed, but i cannot access my access-point. I can SEE the access point (and all my neighbors'), but knetworkmanager does not seem to do anything. To be sure, I installed wicd (nice tool by the way). Trying a connect here told my my credentials were bad (incorrect passphrase for my WPA2 Personal auth), which is not true. I tried connecting without security, didn't get an IP. So it seems somehow the card is working, but all functions needed for passing information to the access-point are unavailable.
This is what I tried:
both broadcom-drivers
fw-cutter
installing the driver by hand
Installing the driver via Hardware Drivers produced the same results as any other, viz the card is working, but not connecting. Unfortunately knetworkmanagers error messages are a bit sparse, or rather non existant. My guess is that somehow the firmware is not properly loaded (or the wrong type??).

I started on ubuntu 8.10 and my wireless card has always worked,Since i did a fresh install of ubuntu 10.04 it still seems to work to a point.I can see networks, click them and use a password to connect but it never seems to carry on, I typed the password correctly and after a minute it asks for it again.I have read a post about problems other people are having and that i need to install a different program. But i cant install another program if there is no wireless as apt-get doesn't work without internet connection.So... I need to download something that will fix it (possible update if one has been released) to xp (partition) then access xp partition from ubuntu and install it.

I've installed a fresh copy of the latest 10.04 distro, lucid lynx and have problems connecting to the machine via ssh because the ports are all blocked (using nmap to check). In past releases, changing the gdm.conf flag "TCPDISALLOW" from true to false would fix this. In the new /etc/gdm/gdm.schemas, I've tried making a similar change, but it's still not opening things up. I've downloaded gufw and have made sure the firewall is off. So, I'm not sure what to try next.

I've just completed switching both my laptop and desktop from Ubuntu 10.04 to Kubuntu 10.04, all seems to be working well, except that I can't get my Virgin Mobile HUAWEI E160E wireless broadband modem working. I used to have it working flawlessly in Ubuntu, I've used the smae step as described in this post: [URL] that worked for me with Ubuntu, but the Wireless Broadband tab is greyed out under the manage connections dialog. I'm running the 64-bit version of Kubuntu BTW.

I am at a total loss. For all intents and purposes - sharing files over a lan without a password between this ubuntu 10.04 machine and my wifes laptop (windows 7) should be trouble free. I've installed samba, and created an smb.conf file in /etc/samba
Code:
[global]
workgroup = WORKGROUP
server string = Samba Server
netbios name = oak
security = share
[Code]....
I want to note that I was using Arch Linux and this exact setup worked flawlessly. Why on earth would it not work the same in Ubuntu? Is it not the same Samba?

I'm running Maverick Meerkat 10.10 x64, and I'm trying to set up a Samba share with user security. In other words, when accessing the share, I want to be prompted for my username and password. Everything in my smb.conf file looks ok to me, but the shares are still accessible with no user security, and I don't know why. The smb.conf file is below:

I just upgraded to 10.04, as of this upgrade, samba has quit working.
From Windows I can ping the linux box (192.168.1.110) If from Windows I key in ->Start->Run->\192.168.1.110 I connect to my linux box.
If I try to access the linux box through the name, (\tardis) I get network path not found.
Everything worked fine before the upgrade, now I cannot see my linux box via its network name. I have a WD TV Live on my network and I must be able to see the linux box via its network name or I cannot connect to it.
iptables shows no rules
smbtree returns
SONCOM
\WINDOZE
\WDTVLIVE WDTV LIVE
Server requested LANMAN password (share-level security) but 'client lanman auth' is disabled
failed tcon_X with NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

I have some samba shares working where all I did was right click on the folder, enable sharing and enable guest access. These work fine.
However, when I tried to use the manual way:
[URL]
to create samba shares, so that they would be password protected, I cant access them. In windows 7, the shares are visible so I click them, click "use another account" and type in my samba name and password I created, but I can't access them.
Here is smb.conf
Code:
#
# Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux.

I'm beginning to think linux actually isn't capable of sharing files and printers with anything. I've been trying to get my LMDE to share files and be able to retrieve files from the other windows PCs I have on my wireless network. I would also like to share the printer I have connected to my LMDE install with those same computers. In short how is this done because I pulling my hair out trying to figure out whats wrong.
As I understand it sharing the printer should be easier than sharing files. Its done by CUPS? Anyway I've enabled sharing in the printing, and in the "server settings" windows ticked "publish shared printers connected to this system". That doesn't work. Windows can't find it. Samba on the other hand is even worse. Edit the smb.conf? Nice way of making things complicated!

I think an update or something has killed Samba on my Karmic box. it can see Windows shares OK, but it no longer appears on the Windows network.I have not changed my smb.conf for months, so something else has been modified.Looking in the logs I can see the following in "log.winbindd-idmap" after restarting Samba
Code:
[2010/03/03 10:07:20, 0] winbindd/idmap.c:201(smb_register_idmap_alloc)
idmap_alloc module tdb already registered!
[2010/03/03 10:07:20, 0] winbindd/idmap.c:149(smb_register_idmap)

All other networking seems fine (internet, Synergy+ etc) it's just sharing out to the Windows network that is broken.

I have installed Samba 1.2.63-0Ubuntu4 (system-config-samba) on Ubuntu 10.04, and it has been working without any issues for a few months now, but now the username/password authentication does not work anymore and I can't figure out why
I have tried changing username/password(thinking maybe i forgot the correct credentials) and the new username/pass does not work either.
I have also tried "sudo service smbd restart" in terminal to restart samba but this does not work either
I can still see visible shares when browsing server via "network neighborhood" on XP,,, and can access the shares that do NOT require authentication
username/password are made up of standard characters as well

I can't get the samba server to work on a Fedora 13 system. First of all, I've activated the "smb" service. After this, since I couldn't find any samba configuration tool in Gnome, I switched to KDE and launched Menu - Computer - System Settings - Advanced - Samba. I typed in my workgroup and netbios name and added a share (2nd tab). Then I added my user name to the blank list "samba users" (4th tab), which wasn't very effective, because this list is blank again when I leave (OK) and reopen this config tool.
From a windows machine, I can't access this Fedora system. Netbios doesn't work (ping netbios name - ...could not find name...) and trying \IP in the explorer shows an error message "Windows cannot find...".
Btw firewall and Selinux are both deactivated.
When I open Dolphin on the Fedora locally and type "smb://localhost" it *does* show a logn window, but no matter what I type in there, it just shows this login windows again after clicking OK.
