Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Is Not Finding Workgroups
Nov 7, 2010
On my desktop PC I use Kubuntu, and on my laptop i use mint XFCE. I dont, however, seem to be able to get them to see each other via samba. In XFCE I am using Gigolo to browse shares, and dolphin in kde. Both are the amd64 versions.Using gigolo in xfce i am able to mount shares from kubuntu by manually entering the ip and connecting, but no workgroups show up when it searches the network. When I look in pyneighbourhood the workgroup is found but the mounting fails every time.In Kde i see nothing at all in any of my network folders.
Seeing as im not using gnome, and definitely not nautilus, i dont think this applies to me.When I run "smbclient -L ROO-DESKTOP" from my laptop I can see all the shares, and other windows computers on the workgroup.

So my brother has a home network that is setup with multiple workgroups (don't ask why - I have no idea and he refuses to change it). Anyways I just installed Mint 9 (Ubuntu 10.04) on my mother's computer and I need it to be able to access the fileserver in her house where her data is stored. The Mint system is part of the default workgroup and can only see one other system in this workgroup.
The workgroup the file server is a part of is called "hobnw", the server's name is "fileserver", and the share I want to connect to is called "TV Shows" How can I connect to this network share on Linux? (I also know the username and password) When I browse the network under nautilus all I see is the default workgroup and no others. All of the Windows systems on the network (Windows XP, Vista, and Win7) all see and can access the file server without issues.

I want to share files from my opensuse 11.3 laptop and Windows XP desktop. It works well between Vista and XP. The domain name is WORKGROUP I checked everything: firewall Opensuse (open ports), firewall XP (disabled), XP workgroup name (WORKGROUP), opensuse Samba workgroup name (WORKGROUP) And my domain controller is set to "Not a DC" Still when I launch network in Dolphin I get "Unable to find any workgroups in your local network"

I just set up my firewall, and now I can't see any Samba workgroups. It says it can't find any workgroups on my local network, and it may be caused by a firewall. It is a firewall issue because if I disable my firewall, I can see the workgroup. What do I need to open on my firewall to see the workgroup? I am using Slackware64 13.37.
Here is how I set up my firewall.
Code:
iptables -P INPUT DROP
iptables -P FORWARD DROP
iptables -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -s 127.0.0.0/8 -d 127.0.0.0/8 -i lo -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p icmp -j ACCEPT
I got the commands from here url.

At home we have a small home network, but it is very slow. I believe it is, because some computers are placed in a workgroup, called WORKGROUP and others are placed in a domain called TUE. The domain is because many of the laptops at our house also have to work on our university, and I can't simply put them in a workgroup.
The reason why I believe it is slow because of this, is because file sharing between the computers in the workgroup goes with 5 MB/s. File sharing between a domain computer and a workgroup computer goes as fast as 160 KB/s. This is the upload speed of our internet here. How to make the connection with the domain computers the same speed as the workgroup computers? I can not simply put the domain computers out of their domain and in the workgroup (as explained before)
Our network looks as follows:
Internet

/
Modem

I do not have any shares setup on my home network so this has never been a big deal to me. My mother finally took enough interest in my operating system to allow me to dual boot 3 of her computers. Everything was up and running like a charm and then she asked "What about connecting to the file server?"
I click on "network" under nautilus and start clicking around - no where in here is the file server that every Windows system on the network can see (5 or so other systems with xp/vista/7 on them - so I know the share works). A small bit of time and some command life foo later I had hunted down and manually mounted the share and added and fstab entry for the drive so my mother would never have to go through that on her own.
That being said - did I do things the hardway here? Can someone please tell me there is an easy method that successfully detects and connects to samba shares without having to resort to CLI? Personally I do not mind doing this, but it is an issue when I am installing Linux for a beginner.

I just converted our whole office from many flavors of Windows, and windows server 2000 to Ubuntu Server and Kubuntu for desktops. All went beautifully and the staff is warming up to my move(the first think one noticed was that Open Office can ready both older DOC and newer DOCX Word files, which MS Office can't do). The Ubuntu 10.04 Server was a learning experience because I added a lot of things other than just service Samba files(intranet, internal mail server, MySql, etc). Going on 3 weeks and not one problem with printing, incompatible document formats etc! But getting it all working was fun because things make sense and are visible. Windows is fine when things work but when it doesn't it is very mysterious and unfriendly. All was fine except when I tried to install Kubuntu 10.04 on a spare laptop.
It worked perfectly with the live CD and even a bootable persistent version on a flash drive. But when installing a normal HD install, all went well but I can't find the workgroup on the network. I am a pretty much novice so really do not know where to start looking. I can ping the server and internet and the new intranet work on the wireless and wired connections. Just can't see the network workgroup. Where to start looking? or maybe just reformat and start again. I just tried booting from the CD and the USB Flash drive again and both of those work well, just slow. For those wondering if it is a good move, consider what a support relievf it would be to have all your desk machines on the exact same page in terms of security updates and versions, and so easy to keep current. Besides the UI is really pretty cool.

I have CentOS 5.5 installed on my Dell D600. This release includes SAMBA 3.0.
Question: Is there a way to use yum to upgrade / install the latest version of SAMBA (3.5.3)?
A "yum search samba" shows there is only the "samba3x" release available - which is SAMBA 3.0
I've downloaded the SAMBA3-3.5.3-43.el5.i386.rpm package for Cent OS 5 from the SAMBA.org site, but when I try to install it, it fails due to package dependencies.
Short of downloading the source and compiling it myself, is there a better method to get the latest version of SAMBA installed on my system?

when i am using win xp to logon on samba domain the windows XP does not load profiles from samba. I think that the problem is NTUSER.DAT storing in /home/user/profile
The same profile is working using samba 2.2.8 but not working in samba 3.5.3..

I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.

Start>Run>\192.168.0.1storage gives me "The specified network password is not correct." It lists my domain as "ANTEC" which is the name of my computer, though I've changed the workgroup to WELLS. I've run:
setsebool -P samba_domain_controller on
Trying to connect to samba locally gives me this:
Code:
[tedward@hp-firegate ~]$ smbclient //192.168.0.1/storage -Utedafur
Password:
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE

I have ubuntu installed on my laptop which works fine. It has a pcmcia wifi card. When I tried to run the kubuntu live cd it couldn't find the card. As the drivers will be the same how do I find the drivers to allow me to use kubuntu? I plan to make a live usb which I'll add the drivers to so that it'll work each time I plug in. Alternatively if I can find the drivers then I'll just enable them each time via the cd.

I have a ubuntu server running which acts as a firewall/dhcp router for sharing internet to all computers on the network. On the network i have my stationary computer (win7) and my laptop (macbook). The server has 3 nics installed.ETH2 for internet. ETH1 (192.168.1.2) for windows pc. ETH0 for macbook (192.168.2.2).I can share files no problems over the network. Between windows <-> server, macbook <-> server, windows <-> macbook. The problem i'm experiencing is that i can't seem to find either hostnames between windows and macbook. They connect to each other fine with the right ip addresses, but they can't seem to connect when using computer names.
On both the macbook and windows pc i can see the server and connect to it without using the ip adress. What can i do to make them see each other with their computer names? Is there anything i can install on the server and configure in order for it to work automatically? In osx you have a tab in the finder that says "shared" which shows the computers on the network and only my server pops up.The same in windows, i can only see the server but not the macbook. As said, it works perfectly fine if i use \192.168.2.2 (or smb://192.168.1.2 on the macbook) but i'd rather be able to connect via the computer names.Would also love if they could resolve automatically so when a friend connects to the network i'll see his computer name right from the start, without any re-configuration.

I just downloaded Ubuntu Studio on my laptop and I can't get the wireless to work. I think it's because I need a driver; the Atheros AR928x. Whatever the driver is, it works with the pretty unpopular Musix distribution, because wireless worked instantly when I got that. I switched because it was old and slow.

I've installed it and it looks great. my problem is that I cant connect to the net since I could not find the driver for my onboard network adapter. it is a Gigabyte GA 945 GCM S2L board. of coarse I searched their site but it says that Linux driver I have to achieve from 3rd party. the adapter's chipset is a Realtek RTL 8111C but I could not find the driver for it. the only one that I've found - doesn't work. I must point out that when I've searched driver for my Nvidia display adapter- I've found it on Nvidia's site and it works great.

My cellular provider supports UM185 - but the product is not documented to work on Linux.I brought it home anyway, figuring I could find a driver for it.No luck with any of the searches I have tried.Looking for guidance on where I should look for drivers, search keywords, OR the name of a supported mobile broadband device/cellular provider.

I've a working internal Intel wifi card but it does not have the greatest of ranges so I bought a Edimax EW-7711UAn.
On the box is says Linux compatible. All knowing Google states that it works out of the box with Ubuntu 10.04.
NetworkManager lists the card at a Ralink 8011.n WLAN (disconnected).
There are no networks listed under this card in NetworkManager or wicd even if I disable the internal wifi using the nm-system-settings.conf.
dmesg has the following lines:
Code:
The led flashes quickly a few times when I plug it in then once a second after that.
The firmware rt2870.bin is in /lib/firmware/
I've even gone old-school and tried compiling the newest driver from Ralink but this fails with...

My HP Pavilion dm4 notebook has the Broadcom bcm4313 and worked with the proprietary Broadcom driver provided with Ubuntu 10.04 but did not work with the corresponding driver provided with Ubuntu 10.10. The solution that worked for me (for a while) was to install "broadcom-sta-common" and its dependencies using Synaptic. After enabling the proprietary driver (System > Administration > Additional Drivers) and rebooting, wireless worked. I even shared this on this post. chargersfan420 get his Broadcom card functional again.
What changed to break it? Well, wireless had worked for several days, so I felt that I had solved the wireless problem. Now it was time to find a solution to unlock my BIOS settings. I successfully used PCCMOSCleaner to clear the password. After that, no more wireless. (Note to dm4 users: Apparently HP puts a password on the BIOS settings and makes it available only if you boot into the factory-installed Windows 7 and retrieve it. Of course I never booted into Windows 7 before upgrading the machine to Linux, deleting both the Windows partition and HP's hidden recovery partition.)
I uninstalled all the Broadcom stuff and reinstalled it all. Now I appear to have wl working, and b43 and ssb blacklisted, but network manager is not seeing any wireless connections available.
My Hardware: HP Pavilion dm4-1063cl My OS: Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit (clean install)
lspci reports this:
Code:
$ lspci -vvnn | grep 14e4
03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4727] (rev 01)

I actually have two problems: I couldn't get DUN to work with Ubuntu for a while and then one day it just magically worked and would let me find the device and connect to it. And then it broke again. So in my effort to fix the problem it looks like Bluetooth went completely off the rails. When I try to add a Bluetooth device through the manager it just keeps spinning with "Searching for Devices" but the spinning finds nothing (it would run for an eternity if I let it, it seems). hcitool scan reports "Scanning ..." and then drops back to command prompt. hciconfig notes the device is up. The device has no soft/hard locks on it. If anyone has a CLUE about what it could be.
Obvious note: My phone is in bluetooth mode and discoverable so that isn't the problem.
If I make the computer visible, my phone DOES NOT pick up it's there. Also, bluetooth works fine on the Fedora USB stick.

Ive managed to install samba, I've shared a folder. I can access from a Windows 7 machine via \ubuntupublic. I can put files in the folder form the ubuntu machine and edit them on the windows box. I can put files in the folder/share from the Windows box but then I cannot edit them on the Ubuntu machine (they are read only and have a "Lock" over them). I can fix this by going to the properties of the file/folder in Windows and manually assigning "Everybody" full control (then the lock disappears and all is well.) I want read/write access to all the folders contents from both machines all the time (security is NOT a concern I WANT the permissions wide open) what am I doing wrong?

If you are running a home server/website, and want a domain name, currently you can use dyndns and others etc. to get a free one and use that so people can find you by name. So my question is, can it be done on your home server without having to use eg dyndns or others.
